ALL SAINTS PARISH 2 JANUARY 17, 2021
Dear Parish Family,
We are two weeks into 2021, and it seems like 2020 has still not left the building! With all the things going on in the world, our Hope and Joy in the Lord as believers in Christ continue to be especially targeted by the spiritual enemy. This week, a priest friend of mine shared this beautiful Christmas letter to donors he received from Catholic Answers (which is a very worthy organization to donate to. Check them out sometime: www.catholic.com) which spoke to his heart so much, that he presented it to his whole parish as a Sunday homily. I have been equally blessed in reading it, and I also want to share this good news with everyone at All Saints. “A wise priest I know- one
with a sense of humor- will lighten the mood in a room when he feels too much talk has turned to how bad things are. “It’s going to get darker,” he will say, “before it gets pitch black!” The quip is funny, of course, because there is more than a grain of truth in it. No serious Christian can imagine that the Church will be spared the narrow road, indeed the via dolorosa, of her Founder. The tone reveals something deeper, however: JOY.
I’m serious. “Those signed
with the Cross of Christ go happily in the dark,” declares G.K. Chesterton in his Ballad of the White Horse. It is unbecoming of
Christians to be gloomy. Our Lord says as much when he tells us to wash our faces and comb our hair. To be sure, Jesus is warning us against spiritual pride, but he probably had something practical in mind as well. It is as if he is asking us, “How are you going to attract people to your religion if it’s the religion of the dour and the cranky?” To the manipulators of the outrage industry who exploit social media to keep their followers ever focused on the transgressions of churchmen, I would put a similar question: “Who would want to belong to the religion of the ever incensed and aggrieved?”
I once heard it said that “Complaints are the language of life.” It is true that everyone complains about something. Some complain about everyone. But if everyone complains about everything all the time- which is basically where we are as a society right now- then no one will ever have any chance to be happy, never mind be overflowing with joy and hope as the Word of God instructs us. I think that complaints can fall into three categories. There can be gentle ribbing amongst friends; “I kid because I care.” Another type of complaining is done by people who see the problem, know what is wrong, and genuinely want to fix it. They
James 1:19
may even earn the title “people of good will” if they are actually willing to invest of themselves- by their time, labor, and money- to “fix” the problems they express their concerns about. But ALMOST ALL of complaining has its roots in sin, not virtue. Think of the Israelites in the desert on the Exodus journey. The more they complained, the worse it got. It remains the same today! So as 2020- I mean 2021- continues to press on, let’s not complain. Rather, let’s open our hearts more to the Lord and His Goodness, and let Him light up our hearts and souls with praise and laughter, even in the midst of the storm. The author concludes: “One thing I can do, though, about chaos and scandal is to present the beauty and magnificence, the logic and clarity, the depth and the truth of the Catholic faith to as many souls as possible. Above all, I can present the JOY. Blessings! Fr. Chris

Querida familia parroquial:
Chesterton en su poema “Ballad of the White Horse”.
Bendiciones! Padre Chris Padre Chris

opportunity to celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord with a beautiful theatrical performance. All Saints Parish has many talents, praise the Lord! Thank you very much to everyone who participated in this beautiful feast of faith and joy. I hope that next year we will no longer have the limitations of Covid-19 and we can celebrate this feast also in a beautiful way. We want to honor everyone who participated in this performance, so let me present here the cast of the Epiphany Play. First of all, I want to thank the team that I have been meeting with for a long time to prepare this performance: Kim O'Neil, Kathleen Dacey and Nicolas Castillo; in fact, not only did they prepare this beautiful performance, but they were also part of the actors.
