DAY 1, THU, MAY 9 USA/LONDON We depart Roanoke today on our overseas flight to Lon- don. (meals aloft) DAY 2, FRI, MAY 10 Down through the years, from a small Roman settlement housed within stout fortifications, London has steadily grown to become one of the world’s greatest capital cit- ies. Upon arrival this morning we are met at the airport by our guide and bus. We drive into the city and enjoy a panoramic tour, driving past well-known and recognizable places on our way to the St. Giles Hotel. After checking in to the hotel, the remainder of the day is free to explore on our own. DAY 3, SAT, MAY 11 Today our bus and local guide pick us up at our hotel for a full day of touring some of London’s famous sites. We view sites such as Marble Arch, Mayfair, Piccadilly, the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and Hyde Park. This afternoon we tour the Tower of London, a historic castle built in the 11th century and originally used as a royal residence. It has also been used as a prison since its early days, and over time has gained a reputation as a place of torture and death, although ex- ecutions typically took place north of the castle on Tower Hill. Today the Tower of London is one of the country’s top tourist attractions and is perhaps best known for housing the Crown Jewels. We have a guided tour conducted by a traditional Tower Beefeater and then our bus returns us to our hotel. (B) DAY 4, SUN, MAY 12 Today our bus and local guide pick us up at our hotel for another full day of touring. We enjoy a closer look at Big Ben. Then we proceed to Buckingham Palace, which has served as the official London residence of Britain’s sovereigns since 1837 and today is the administrative headquarters of the Monarch. Here we take in a quintes- sential London experience - observing the Changing of the Guard. Then we go to famed Westminster Abbey, home to many coronations and royal weddings and site of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding on April 29, 2011. This afternoon we continue sightseeing with a visit to St. Paul's Cathedral, site of many famous state occa- sions, including the funeral of Winston Churchill in 1965 and the wedding of the Prince and Princess of Wales in 1981. Later this afternoon we board the iconic London Eye, located on the south bank of the River Thames, and we are transported over 400 feet up for a birds-eye view of the city. From there our bus takes us back to our hotel. (B) DAY 5, MON, MAY 13 Today we use our Travel Cards to go to the Metropolitan Police Heritage Center, which houses a historical col- lection of some 15,000 items such as uniforms, old maps of London, and other police equipment. From there we continue to the Royal Courts of Justice, which houses the Court of Appeal of England and Wales and the High Court of Justice of England and Wales. Housed within a magnificent Gothic building, the courts handle many of the nation’s most serious civil, libel and appeals cases. Consisting of more than three miles of corridors and con- taining more than one thousand rooms, the architectural scale of the courts is breathtaking, with the interior of the building every bit as lavish and impressive as the exterior. We have a guided tour and then travel about a half-mile to The Central Criminal Court, popularly known as the Old Bailey. A local law specialist meets us there to conduct our tour and describe Old Bailey’s past and current functions dealing with Greater London’s major criminal cases, and occasionally those from other parts of England and Wales. After our tour we use our Travel Cards to return to our hotel. (B) DAY 6, TUE, MAY 14 Today we use our Travel Cards to visit the British Museum, home to more than seven million objects comprising one of the most comprehensive collections worldwide and spanning the entire breadth of human history and culture. The British Museum has treasures from around the world including the Rosetta Stone (which helped archaeologists to interpret Egyptian hieroglyphics), the magnificent Elgin Marbles (sculptures that formerly decorated the Parthenon in Athens) and a copy of the Magna Carta (the charter signed by King John in 1215 to which is ascribed the origins of English liberty). Then we visit the National Gallery. From its humble beginnings - 38 paintings purchased by the British government from a banker in 1824 - today it boasts a rich collection of over 2,300 paintings spanning six centuries. The National Gallery is located on the north side of Trafalgar Square, which serves as a social and political gathering place for visitors and Londoners alike. We explore the square, which features Nelson’s Column and the four lion statues that guard it. The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure with overnight at our hotel. (B) DAY 7, WED, MAY 15 This morning we use our Travel Cards to go to the Globe Theatre, located on the banks of the River Thames. “Shakespeare’s Globe” is a modern reconstruction of the Elizabethan playhouse that was originally constructed in 1597 by the playing company Lord Chamberlain’s Men, to which Shakespeare belonged. We have a guided backstage tour here, on which we discover what an Eliza- bethan audience would have been like and learn about the extensive research that went into the design of this authentic reconstruction. This afternoon we visit St. Martin in the Fields, a vibrant, open, and inclusive church at the heart of London with thriving English and Chinese-speak- ing congregations. We are met here for a guided tour to “explore the stories behind the stones.” This evening we take the spooky, original “Jack the Ripper Walk,” which begins at Tower Hill right on the boundary between Scotland Yard territory and City of London Police territory. By starting there, one begins to understand the conflict between the two London police forces and their leading personalities - a conflict which blurred the investigation and made it easier for the Ripper to slip through the police nets. Following our guided walk, we return to our hotel for overnight. (B) DAY 8, THU, MAY 16 Enjoy the full day at leisure in London today for independent sightseeing and shopping. Take advantage of your provided Travel Card to visit sites not included in the tour, or perhaps return to a favorite site to explore it further. (B) DAY 9, FRI, MAY 17 RETURN USA Following breakfast at the hotel, we transfer to the airport for our return flight to the USA. (B,meals aloft) All sites listed in the itinerary will be seen but the sequence and days may be altered to adjust to religious holidays, special closings of sites, air schedule changes, etc. Hotel listed subject to confirmation.
