I joined Hope on Pentecost Sunday 2005, and am best known for participating in the Bells of
Hope, New Hope Band, and Adult Choir. I served on Church Council (2010-2011, one year as
Council Secretary); Music and Worship Team (2010); and Mutual Ministry Team (2011-2012).
Prior to joining Hope, I served two years on the Board of Deacons at University Presbyterian
Church, one year as Moderator; I also taught Sunday school, led drama productions, and of
course participated in music programs.
I obtained my BA in English from CSU Fresno in 1982. I have worked for Key Writing Concepts
since 1999; we are business consultants specializing in planning and documentation projects. As
Vice President of Operations, I am responsible for quality control in writing and document
development as well as administrative and organizational functions—skills I believe would be
especially valuable to the Call Team.
My passion for the performing arts began in church singing in the children’s choir. Throughout
my school years I sang in choirs and played flute in marching band. My introduction to drama
came in 1980 through the Covenant Players, a touring ministry that performs in churches,
schools and other settings. In 1984, I auditioned for Fiddler on the Roof with Good Company
Players, and have continued to appear in many productions over the years. This past summer I
fulfilled a dream by appearing in StageWorks Fresno’s production of Les Misérables.
My vision for our congregation is that we become a hope to those in our community who are
searching for purpose and meaning in their lives. Our new lead pastor should be someone who
can inspire and encourage all members to full and active participation in the church, enabling
us to reach out to those in need of God’s love.

Co-Chaired Children's Christmas Program
Volunteered to call members for contributions
Member of Monday Ministers
Member of Various Committees over the years
Work in the Kitchen for Wednesday night dinners and as needed for other events
Co-chaired several fund-raisers for the Lutheran Church in Bethlehem
I feel that I would be able to contribute a voice on the Call Committee.

Mark A. Dodd
I was born in Fresno, graduated from Hoover High in 1980 and CSU Fresno in 1985 with
a BS in Business Administration. I was commissioned as an Army Second Lieutenant from ROTC
and graduated from the Army Military Intelligence Basic and Advance Officer Courses. I retired
after 23 years in the Army with 12 years on Active Duty and the rest in the California National
Guard. I served as a battalion commander and on staffs from the battalion to the corps level. I
currently work as a landman doing mineral title research work in Clovis.
I have been married to my best friend Cathy for 23 years and we have two wonderful
daughters Kelsey, a junior at New Mexico State and Alyssa, a freshman at Boise State. I enjoy
watching sports, especially my daughter Kelsey playing softball.
I was baptized at Hope Lutheran in November of 1962 and confirmed in May of 1977.
Both Kelsey and Alyssa were baptized and confirmed at Hope Lutheran. I was part of the
Children’s Choir, Youth Bell Choir, and Adult Bell Choir. I served on Pastor Ford’s call committee
and was a member of the personnel committee for three years. I have chaperoned many youth
activities, participated as part of the kitchen staff for various dinners and played on both the
church’s softball and volleyball teams.
The strength of Hope has always been our congregation, our musical ministries and our
youth ministries. Hope Lutheran has always been a constant foundation for generations of
members to learn about Christ, to share his teachings with others by, word, music and
fellowship. Hope Lutheran is a beacon of light that guides us home and gives our surrounding
community hope in humanity and hope in Christ.
Bob Epperson
Bob is married to Loretta Epperson. They have four children who were raised in the
Hope family. All are active in congregations where they live. Bob received Bachelor’s and
Master’s Degrees. He completed coursework on his doctorate prior to being called to active
duty with the Air Force, where he worked on the Space Shuttle Program. He retired from
Caltrans as a Senior Environmental Planner and from the Bureau of Reclamation as a Resource
Manager. Bob farms raisin grapes. He serves the raisin industry as Chair of the Finance
Committee and Board Vice-chair for the Sun Maid Board of Directors, and as Treasurer of the
federal Raisin Administrative Committee. Also, he is Chairman of the Kerman Planning
Commission.
Bob has been active in church leadership at Hope and Bethel Lutheran Churches in
Fresno as well as churches in Florida and southern California. Bob and Loretta served as youth
leaders for elementary, junior high, high school, and college age groups at each of these
churches. Bob participates in a local Bible study. Bob was a representative to many synod
conferences for the congregations he served. An active member of the Building New Blessings
Campaign, Bob helped raise funds to build our current community center. He developed
church budgets as a member of finance committees and served on Hope’s personnel and
stewardship committees.
As a member of churches large and small and in management positions evaluating and
supervising a variety of people from Corporate CEOs to college professors, government
specialists, and farm laborers, Bob has learned the importance of teamwork and the
identification of effective leaders.
Hope Lutheran Church needs an inspiring and discerning leader and pastor to work with
the people of Hope, using their diversities and strengths, to extend Hope in Jesus through the
congregation and the community.
Sharon Bue Garabedian
Sharon Bue Garabedian- My husband is Robert L. Garabedian and we have two adult children,
Kristina and Michael.
I was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Astoria, Oregon where I grew
up. After graduating from College with a degree in business and a teaching credential, I moved
to the Bay Area where I became one of the first female managers at the corporations where I
worked. As a Director of Human Resources, my responsibilities included managing a sizeable
budget and interviewing and exploring potential hires. This position required not only strong
listening skills but also the ability to speak up for what is right and a strong conviction. I am
currently managing Robert's dental practice 3 days per week where my listening and people
skills have come in handy with new and current patients.
After meeting Robert, almost 30 years ago, I moved to Fresno. Through driving by and
checking out many churches, God guided me to Hope. We were married by Bishop Murray Fink
who was one of the pastors at the time at Hope.
At Hope I have been very active serving as a 3-year old Sunday school teacher, member
of the Learning Tree Board, Sunday School superintendent, 3rd grade teacher, chairperson of
Personnel committee, served on the nominating committee, delegate to Synod Assembly, Adult
member of the Synod Youth Committee, attended Western States Gathering in Seattle with our
Youth, Attended the ELCA National Lutheran Youth Convention with youth leaders from our
synod, assisted with vacation bible school, back to school and trunk or treat and lots of
fundraisers at Hope. I was a member of a Renavore bible study groups as long as they existed
at Hope and currently attend Lydia Circle Bible study. My mornings begin with daily devotions
and prayer which starts my day off on the right foot.
My vision for Hope is a dynamic, thriving congregation full of lots of young families. A
church were we continue to support all of our members with educational opportunities,
meaningful worship, Bible studies and other opportunities for all members of all ages to grow in
their faith.

Nancy Hanson
A little about myself: I grew up in Lewiston, Idaho, and graduated from the University of
Idaho (BS-Ed). My “career” includes bookkeeping for a multi-company corporation, front office
and bookkeeping for a construction company, and financial administrative assistant at Hope,
with stints as an instructional aide and as a licensed home child care provider. I was married for
25 years, raised four children, and divorced in 2008. In August 2011 I married Richard Hanson.
For the last year I have enjoyed being “employed” as a housewife, mom, and grandmother
while pursuing interests of reading, sewing, and scrapbooking.
Church history: I was baptized at First Methodist Church in Lewiston, Idaho, and was
active in Sunday School and Youth Group. In college I was actively involved with campus
ministry and Bible studies as well as church. As a member of First Presbyterian, Fresno, I taught
Sunday School and was active in the post-college ministry. I have attended worship as a
member of Hope for over 30 years, and my four children were baptized and confirmed here.
Activity at Hope: I have been active in the Women of Hope, adult education classes, and
Bible studies, both as participant and leader. I also have taught Sunday School, served in the
nursery, and have been a confirmation guide and mentor. I trained and served as a Stephen
Minister.
Specific gifts, characteristics, skills: I am familiar with the worship life of the
congregation, have an idea of the varied needs of the entire congregation, and can listen
thoughtfully to others. I commit to praying for the Call Team, the congregation, and our next
pastor.
Vision for Hope: I envision the congregation Extending Hope in Jesus through the Food
Pantry, youth ministries, worship, Bible study, tutoring, and outreach to college students.
Teddy Henley
Hello, I’m Teddy Henley and have been a resident of Fresno/Clovis area for the past 40
years. I’ve been married to Dan Henley for 32 years and we were one of the first couples to
marry in the new sanctuary. We have two children, Megan who is a senior at San Diego State
and Alex who is a sophomore at Fresno State. I graduated Fresno State with a degree in
Marketing and Management. I have worked for Aon Risk Insurance Services for the past 28
years and I’m currently the CFO.
I was in high school when I joined Hope in 1973 and was very active in the youth group.
My mentors at the time were Tom and Nancy Wright and Don and Pat Geringer. After I had my
children, I got involved in Sunday school all the way through their confirmation. At that time I
met Don and Eileen Coleman. Don became my mentor in reading scripture, helping me
understand my role in God’s world as well as my role at Hope Lutheran Church. I saw the
church in a different way…. this is my home and my church. I took action and became Alter
Guild Coordinator, Volunteer Coordinator and a member of the finance team. In addition, I
have helped with the last six fundraisers. The best part of all of this is that my husband, Dan
became an official member two years ago.
I love Hope Lutheran Church and want to see it succeed in every way: Spiritually,
Financially, Growth in outreach and growth in our members. We need a lead Pastor that can
channel our membership to fulfill the mission of Hope, “Extending Hope in Jesus”. I want to be
a part of this mission and would do my very best to God’s work.
Donna Little
I am married to Jeff and we have 3 children, Jennifer, Hannah and Jacob. I am a
Registered Nurse, working as a School Nurse for Madera Unified School District for the past 20
years.
I was raised in the Lutheran Church and we have been members at Hope for the last 15
years. I have been blessed with so many opportunities to serve and grow in my faith here at
Hope. The relationships built with many of the youth come from teaching Sunday school,
mentoring, fundraising activities and chaperoning trips to Mexico and New Orleans. The faith
of our youth and young adults is an inspiration to me. I have also spent many hours in the
kitchen at Hope, not because I have any talent there, but because I love who I work with in
there and who we are serving.
I love worship at Hope, both services. I am grateful we can worship God in many ways
and styles and I believe He is pleased with our heartfelt praise. My vision for Hope is that we
would just be the hands and feet of Jesus here on earth, extending hope to others in His name.
I don't believe I have any specific skills or gifts to serve on the Call Committee, but I am
willing to commit to prayer, listening to the needs of our congregation and seeking the pastor
God ultimately chooses to send us.
Peter Marhenke
My family and I typically attend the first service on a regular basis, although
occasionally, we have attended the later service. I am blessed to be part of an extended family
at Hope, as my wife Kimberly, two children, their cousins, some of my siblings, my parents, my
in-laws, and now my grandmother all attend Hope.
Regardless of the service time, worship is a rejuvenating experience for me. Through
daily prayer and the power of the Holy Spirit, I experience the transformational relationship
with Jesus. I have been a member of Hope Lutheran Church for the last eight years. In that
time I have served on the board of The Learning Tree, helped with Vacation Bible School,
attended adult Bible School, and assisted in various youth group events. In those eight years I
have seen the children’s ministry grow, the youth program expand, and enjoyed the joyful
noises of the various music groups that have participated in worship.
I am proud of the outreach programs to help people from neighborhoods around Hope
that are done by people of all ages in our congregation. I was taught in my years at Valparaiso
University that Grace is not a treasure to be hidden away, but the liberating power to be
shared. Each day as a teacher in Fresno Unified, I encounter people of all cultural backgrounds
and from all socio-economic demographics, and through the power of the Holy Spirit I am sure I
am doing what I was called to do. I listen to those in need, provide guidance to others, and
work to set an example for my students and colleagues. I am proud, as a father, to see my
children experiencing God’s love through the Hope community.
I see a Hope where visitors are welcomed, youth are excited about their programs,
multi-generational relationships are established, and community service is encouraged. I see a
Hope where musical talents are developed, where families are comfortable, and where
countless people are willing to share their time and talents as we, as a congregation continue to
share our mission of extending hope in Jesus.
I have, after prayerful consideration, offered my name as a candidate for the committee
to call a new lead pastor.
Sara Martin
My name is Sara Martin, and I am a sophomore at Fresno Pacific University. I am
currently double majoring in Contemporary Christian Ministries (to become a youth pastor),
and Liberal Studies (to become a teacher). My passions include working with children, learning
new things and making bracelets, blankets and hats. Hope Lutheran has been my congregation
since birth. While my parents chose Hope as our church when I was a kid, as a young adult,
Hope is my choice for church and I have been actively involved since then. Helping with Camp
Hope (VBS), the food pantry, Youth Band, Women’s Retreat, as well as the Junior High ministry
are just a few of the ways I am involved at Hope.
If elected for the Call Team, I would bring some unique ideas to the team. I would bring
a younger perspective, and help represent the young adults which are lacking in our
congregation and our church as a whole. It is very important to me that we find a pastor who
can help us continue to grow and thrive so that in 50 years, my children and grandchildren can
still be a part of this congregation. My strengths include listening to what other people have to
say, communicating in a professional manner and also being able to articulate how I am feeling
and what I think is right.
My vision for Hope Lutheran Church is to grow in our ministries and service toward
others. I believe that the church has a variety of resources that can be used, yet we don’t take
advantage of all that God has given us. I see adults partnering with and mentoring the younger
members of the congregation to help them grow in their faith. I believe that if we partner
together, the church could be made stronger.
Kenneth A. Maul
A life-long Lutheran, Ken was born and raised in Fresno. After receiving his B.A. in
Public Administration from FSU, he was drafted and stationed in San Francisco where he
pursued his Masters Degree from Golden Gate University. In the Army, Ken was stationed at
Letterman General Hospital at the Presidio in San Francisco and, in addition to his regular
duties, served as a volunteer Chaplain’s Assistant to Protestant and Catholic clergy where he
prepared communion for Sunday servicers and distributed religious material to convalescent
patients.
Ken was a public employee, serving as assistant to the director of public pensions in San
Francisco, director of public pensions in Oakland, CA and deputy director and interim director
of the State of Oregon public pension.
He has sung in Lutheran church choirs in San Francisco and Lafayette, CA, as well as
Beaverton, OR and then at Trinity and Hope Lutheran in Fresno. He met his wife, Carol, singing
in the church choir at St. Mark’s Lutheran in San Francisco. He served on the Church Council in
San Francisco, Beaverton, and at Trinity in Fresno. He has also been a representative to Synod
conventions.
With his wife, Carol, he has been a Realtor in Fresno for 24 years. Ken is married to
Carol, a graduate of Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, and together, they have sponsored
the Concordia Choir in Fresno since 1997.
Even though Ken is a lover of the Traditional worship service, he believes that Hope
needs a vibrant contemporary service as well. He strongly believes in the youth ministry and
would like more youth to be involved in both worship services.
They are regular donors to their church, Lutheran Campus Ministry and Concordia
College.
Ken and Carol share their home and their lives with their beautiful 14 year-old Standard
Poodle, Molli.
Ada Mazzeo
I came to the USA in 1981, after meeting my husband Bill in Disneyland 3 years before.
We have been married for 32 years and have 3 adult children. I was educated as an RN in the
Netherlands and worked until 2008 in the NICU at VMC/Community. Since mid 2008 I have
been retired. I love to read, debate, visit friends, bake and travel. Foremost I am a fanatic ice
hockey fan. Yea Avs Go.!!!!!
I have been a member of Hope since 1982. Having been raised Dutch Reformed and Bill
being Roman Catholic. Becoming Lutheran was a good choice for both of us. And having
worked in a Lutheran hospital in Amsterdam, made that step not difficult at all.
I hope that I am a good steward by being involved in different areas such as the Women of
Hope Board on which I served for two years. I volunteer Monday afternoons in the office. As
you might know I am a" regular" usher during the 8:30 am service. I am on the altar guild during
the month of July, and I knit prayer shawls. I have assisted with the service as a communion
asst. and reader. When Rose Thomas left, I took over the Grapevine mailing with the help of
many volunteers and for 2 years I called upon the congregation for communion assistants.
I attend Tuesday morning and Wednesday night Bible classes.
To the Call team I would bring gifts of a passion for Jesus, organization and listening skills, plus
the ability to think outside the box. My vision for Hope is to be one family again. A solid
presence in our surroundings now and in the future by spreading the Good News in one form
or another. Take care of the members we have and attract new and young families, because
they are our future. I am not perfect by a long shot. According to the" Book of Ada" I do have
opinions and will provide them to anyone whose ear I have.
Let us extend Hope in Jesus.
Sharon Nelson
I graduated with a major in Christian Education from Capital University in Columbus,
Ohio. I have been an active member of over 15 congregations, serving two of them ( First
Lutheran in Glasgow, Montana and Bethel in Encino, California) as full time parish worker in
charge of visitation, education, youth work, and senior citizens groups. I met and married
Pastor Warren in 1972 while serving on the church council at St. Andrews in Van Nuys. My
church work after that consisted mainly of helping my husband where it was needed. We
adopted two hard to place boys and moved to Fresno where I taught school at Lane Elementary
for 21 years.
At Hope I am a member on Friendship Club, have served on the education committee
and am currently on the Columbarium Board. My hobbies are many, but currently I care deeply
for the stewardship of God's creation. I do that by taking animals to convalescent homes and
schools to teach ecology as a docent for the Fresno Chaffee Zoo.
My vision for Hope is that it would become a warm and accepting congregation that reaches
out to all in need. I would bring to the Call Team lifelong experience working with Lutheran
pastors and the knowledge of what it takes to be a caring leader.
Alison Quinn
My name is Alison Quinn and I am 23 years old. I recently graduated with my Bachelor
of Arts Degree in Psychology from California State University – Fresno. I am currently working
part-time as an Assistant in Youth Ministry here at Hope Lutheran Church and I LOVE it! I’ve
been blessed with an amazing family, my Mother Susan Quinn; who is a member here at Hope,
and my older brother Brian Quinn who is also a member of Hope. When I have a little free time
I enjoy taking trips to the coast to enjoy the cool weather and ocean, I love traveling, enjoy
swimming, and I love talking and spending time with my friends.
“Church” has always been a part of my family, and Hope has been the primary place of
worship for my immediate family and extended family for many years, for me, 23 years to be
exact. While growing up in a congregation like Hope I have been given many opportunities to
serve and use my talents and abilities. I was an active participant in the Youth Ministry and now
I continue to be an active leader in that area of this congregation. While youth ministry is a
passion of mine I am also the leader of the College and Young Adult ministry. I’ve served on
Church Council as a High School youth representative, sat on the search committee for our
current Youth Pastor Adam Knudson, served 1 year as the Vice President of The Women of
Hope, and sat on many event planning committees.
As we look to the future as a congregation and developing a call committee I believe
that some of the skills and abilities which I would bring to this team would be: good listener,
open minded, ability to see “Big Picture”/Vision, sense of humor, effective communicator,
organized, ability to keep the “main thing the main thing.” My vision for Hope Lutheran Church
is pretty simple; I hope that we can be one body in Christ and that we can come together and
focus our attention on what God is calling us to do while continuing to always “Extend Hope in
Jesus.” I would love to see this congregation be a place, where I would look forward to raising
my children, and in order for this to happen we must be in it together, praying together, loving
together, and understanding together. If elected to serve on this call committee I promise to
ask what does this have to do with the mission and ministry of Hope Lutheran Church and how
does this help us to “Extend Hope in Jesus?”
Linda Rube
My name is Linda Rube and I would look forward to serving God and this congregation
as a member of the Call Team. I think this is an exciting time for Hope Lutheran and an
opportunity for growth and clarity of purpose. I currently serve as a Chaplain at Hinds Hospice,
utilizing my Masters Degree in Diaconal Ministry from our ELCA seminary in Gettysburg,
Pennsylvania. I have two sons and have gained two daughters after marrying Mel Rube three
years ago, when I moved to Fresno and joined Hope Lutheran.
I have been involved in the life of the church all my life, growing up as a “Pastor’s Kid,”
and working in several congregations before going to seminary in 1999. Here at Hope I have
been an active participant in weekly worship and Wednesday night studies, Chair of the
Worship and Music Team, Eucharistic Minister, and singer/worship leader in the New Hope
Band.
As a member of the Call Team, I would be a “Big Picture” person, looking at the needs of
the entire congregation. I would encourage the development of a sense of what unites us in
mission, rather than a focus on lesser issues that might divide us. I would work toward building
consensus after a thorough study of issues and candidates. I would encourage a Spirit of Joy
and Purpose in the work that we are called to do together on behalf of this congregation.
My prayer for Hope Lutheran through this call process would be that we experience a
growing sense of unity and purpose as a people of God called to Extend Hope in Jesus in this
place, and that we would be led by the Spirit to find the leader God is already calling and
equipping to help us move in this direction.
Rebecca Russler
I am Rebecca (Becky) Russler and am interested in participating in the call for our next
pastor. I feel Hope Lutheran has a strong voice in our community, a voice that speaks of Hope
and love for our neighbors and each other, the family of Hope.
I am a lifelong Lutheran and a member of a Hope since 1984. My husband Mike and I
have raised our family here. Daughter Sandra and son Steven were also very active in the youth
groups. Both are happily married living in Sacramento and San Jose respectively. We have five
beautiful grandchildren as well. We are now "empty nesters" so have taken on two English lab
puppies. They have captured our hearts.
I hold a Master of Science degree in nursing and am currently working as a Family Nurse
Practitioner at California State University, Fresno, student health center. I love working with the
college age students. They help keep me young, at least in spirit! I enjoy music, love hiking, the
outdoors, reading and quilting. These are a few of my passions.
I joined Hope Lutheran around 1984 and have been active in a variety of ways. I have
been in the adult choir, bell Choir for many years. I have served on the past Evangelism and
education committee, I have served on a call committee in the past as well as council a few
times. I have also taught children's SS and adult education, helped with Vacation Bible School,
and have mentored confirmation students.
My strengths and gifts come from my involvement in all aspects of church life, my faith
and love for God's church. I listen well and am a good team member. I can summarize what the
team brings and help to move the Team effectively through the call process.
My vision for Hope is to be the light on the corner for all to see, feel and experience
God's presence. To be God's living word in love!
Pam Scheid
My name is Pam Scheid, and I am excited about the possibility of being part of the Call
Team. My husband Dave and I have been members of Hope for about 15 years. We have 3
adult children, who were all confirmed at Hope. Prior to staying home full time once our third
child was born, I was in banking for 10 years, after graduating from Cal Poly SLO.
I am a life-long Lutheran, and have been involved in various activities at Hope. I have
taught Sunday school, helped out at VBS, Trunk or Treat, and was on the Mutual Ministry
committee for over three years. I have been an Altar Guild member for many years. I also
volunteer in the office on Fridays. Our daughter, Stephanie, was active in the High School group
all 4 years, and was blessed to be able to attend 3 different youth gatherings. I also helped with
fundraising for these trips. I currently attend Tuesday morning bible study, and have attended
several Wednesday night studies.
As a member of the Call Team, I believe I can be a good listener, both to other members,
and to the Holy Spirit. I have a pretty calm demeanor, and usually will think before I speak, but
am not afraid to express my views. I believe this is a critical time in the life of our congregation.
My vision for Hope is that we can put aside individual wants, and with God’s guidance, work
together. I want Hope to be a vibrant, growing congregation, who serves each other, and the
community, while sharing the love of Christ. I believe this will happen, with the right
leadership, and if we open our hearts to hear where God will lead us.
Christa Slater
I have been a member of Hope for the past ten years. I’m proud to say that even at a
fairly young age; I’ve been able to be in a variety of our church’s functions, and because of that,
I’ve gotten to know a large population of the church. Currently, I’m a Sunday School guide, a
representative on the worship committee, I’m part of the chime choir, part of the Women of
Hope, I’m a youth leader, and am part of our youth group here.
Outside of our church, I’m a sophomore at Bullard High School. There I get to be part of
the Bullard High Marching Band, where I am in percussion. I’m also involved with our “Pay It
Forward Club” on Campus, and am a co-leader of the “Christ Club” on campus. Recently, I’ve
been selected to be a mentor to middle school aged girls, as part of a club called “Girl Talk” at
Tenaya Middle School. I also enjoy meetings with my senior Girl Scouts, volunteering at the
Animal Rescue of Fresno, and enjoying my free time with friends.
I think it’s important that youth representatives be on this call team because, here at
Hope we’re lucky to have a substantial, and involved group of youth. We want to be a part of
Hope Lutheran Church because this is a place we love and feel comfortable. As part of the call
team, I know I would bring forth a youthful perspective. I know that I can bring an enthusiastic
approach to the team, and I know I’ll get a lot out of being on it as well.
Bryan Smith
My name is Bryan Smith. I was born in Durant, Oklahoma, October 25, 1935. I moved to
Visalia, CA the summer of 1952. I graduated from Cal Baptist University with a Bachelor of Arts
Degree in 1957, and later from Golden Gate Seminary as a Master of Divinity in 1961. I was
lead into a career as an Elementary School Teacher, and retired in 1997 from Fresno Unified
Schools after 32 years in the classroom.
I started singing in the church choir when I was 9 years old and have been involved in
church choirs ever since. I served as a choir director for 25 of those years. Those were the
“Baptist” years. The last 46 years have been “Lutheran” years, as a member at Trinity until
1961, and at Hope since then. These have been the most spiritually fulfilling years of my life.
Since 1961 I have been continually active as a choir member here at Hope. I have served
2 years on the Church Council, I have taught Sunday School and Camp Hope. I served as the
Chairman of the NCD (Natural Church Development) Committee for 18 months.
I served as pastor of 2 small mission churches, so I would bring that experience to my
input as a team member. I have been Christ centered in my church all of my life.
My opinion is, Hope has unlimited potential as a community of faith. A Traditional and
Contemporary Services, Food Bank involvement, Support Group Centers, relationship with
Fresno Area Schools, closeness to high occupancy housing locations at less than 2 blocks away,
very active and successful Youth Ministries, a Community Center available for community use,
and even more family support events I can’t name individually. We need a “Senior Pastor” with
a wide vision to be our leader.
Donald W. Smith
BA Norwich University, Northfield, Vermont.
Supervisor in various groups with increasing levels of responsibility. Most significant was as
HR Director of a 2,000 person hospital group.
Received many awards for outstanding achievement including the Bronze Star, Meritorious
Service Medal and eight (8) Army Commendation Medals.
Member of Hope Lutheran Choir for over twenty four (24) years.
Volunteer administrative assistant in Front Office of Hope Lutheran. This is where I quickly
learned compassion, some of the inner workings of the Church and a great desire to
help people in great need. This is certainly a place where God is watching us “Extend
Hope in Jesus”.
Dedicated to the proposition that it is better to have a timely selection process for our new
Lead Pastor, within the guidelines of our Constitution, than it is to over burden our staff
with a long decision making process.
Mary L. Smith
I have been a member of Hope since 1984. I was raised in an Episcopal church,
attending every Sunday with my mother and two sisters. My dad had been raised in the Church
of Christ but did not participate in our religious training.
I have a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from CSUF and an MBA from National University. I
spent 44 years as a working operating room nurse, the last 30 in Administration and retired in
February of 2012. I am divorced with two grown daughters. My hobbies include golf, bicycling,
sewing and craft projects, and gardening.
I was one of several “lady tenors” in the choir for 25 years. I have participated in the
worship service as a communion assistant and assisting minister. I have served on the Church
Council three times, the most recent four year term from 2008-2011, with two years of that
term as Council President. I have been a working member of many committees, including the
Crab Feed, the Rummage Sale and many other special events.
I am a direct, tell-it-like-it-is type of person. I spent a lot of my career managing
employees and feel that I am a good judge of character. I feel I am a good listener and try to
ensure that I have a full understanding of the speaker’s thoughts. I am organized and
methodical (sometimes to the level of OCD) but I try to be open to new challenges and ways of
doing things.
I feel that Hope needs to look to the future with the hope and prayer; that if we really
listen to God’s word we will continue to grow and serve our community. We need to look
carefully at some of our really successful ministries, such as the Food Pantry and ask ourselves
“what are they doing that creates that success?”
Thank you for considering me for the Call Team.
Bob Stenberg
I was born in Pittsburgh, Penna., lived there until I was 10 and moved to Southern Calif. I
went to San Fernando High School and Valley College, served in the Army and Army Reserve,
and served a 5 year Plumbing App. I worked in the Plumbing Industry until I retired in 2003. I
am now 72 years old. My wife is Joyce Stenberg and we recently celebrated our 50th wedding
anniversary. I enjoy playing golf and I work at Riverbend Golf Course as a volunteer a few
times a month. I have been an avid model airplane enthusiast most of my life.
Hope has been an integral part of our lives since joining in 1976, and as members of
Hope, our family has been faithful in support with time, treasure and talent. Both of our
children, Susan and Michael were confirmed at Hope, and four of our six grandchildren,
Christopher, Tori, Kara, and Justin, were baptized here at Hope. Over the past 36 years, I have
had the opportunity to serve as a Youth Group sponsor, Habitat for Humanity Captain, Church
Council, Columbarium Board, Building and Grounds, Usher, Communion Assistant, Greeter,
Confirmation Mentor, and I am currently serving on the Mutual Ministry Team. I also have been
faithful in attendance at our Friday Morning Men’s Bible Study for the past 8 years. I feel that I
have a good grasp on the needs of our congregation, staff, and our pastors. I know that I can
get along well with others and can be a team player. I can listen to all sides of an issue and
based upon that, I can draw my own conclusions and express them.
I think that our church is perfectly positioned for “Extending Hope In Jesus” and we
need a Lead Pastor with a great amount of insight to guide us in our Mission, also a Lead
Pastor that is committed to Hope Lutheran Church, and is willing to work with the
congregation and it’s representatives.
George VanPelt
I would like to introduce myself; my name is George Van Pelt and would appreciate your
vote for election to the call team. I have been a member of Hope Lutheran Church for 18
years. I have served on the altar guild, Lead usher for the last five years and served as an office
volunteer.
I am a sincere and honest worker for the Church. I firmly believe in “Extending Hope in
Jesus,” having volunteered for VBS, Trunk or Treat, member of Hope’s Hand Bell Choir.
I used to have my own Charter Coach Company and retired five years ago with 41 years
of professional driving all across the USA and Canada.
I am very active in the Fresno Model Railroad club having been superintendent for four
years. But I never forgot that God is first and this is my prime reason for attending Hope
Lutheran Church.
David Willis
I moved to the Fresno Area in 1975 and joined Hope Lutheran Church in 1977-1978. My
background is of a Danish heritage, and Lutheran faith. While growing up in Solvang I attended
Bethania Lutheran Church. I am 65 years old, married to Nancy, and we have two daughters
Jennifer & Erica who were both married at Hope. Nancy works with The California Baptist
Foundation.
I am a graduate of Cal Poly at San Luis Obispo where I earned a Bachelor of Science
degree in Business Administration. I have been working in the concrete block business for over
45 years, and have earned various certification awards and recognitions in the industry.
I have served twice on the church council, various committees (including: Property &
Grounds, Stewardship, Worship & Music, and “Vision for Hope”). I enjoy planning the annual
Giants baseball trip, and have been a member of the Hope Choir for 25 plus years. I also enjoy
golf and trips on the motorcycle.
I was fortunate enough to have been a member of Allen Schoonover’s call committee. I
found this task to be very rewarding and challenging. I work daily with professionals in the
building industry and believe I have a unique perspective for those in other professions. I
believe Hope Lutheran is at the cross roads of needing a leader that will work closely with staff
and lend an ear to the wishes of the congregation. We need to continue to promote both
traditional and contemporary worship services.
I look to Hope to continue its reach out into the community following our mission
statement.
I look forward for the opportunity to serve the congregation as a member of the
upcoming call committee.
Nancy Willis
I was raised and grew up in Rio Linda, CA, but have lived in Fresno since October of
1975. I am married to Dave and we have two adult children, Jennifer and Erica with families of
their own. Our family has been a member of Hope since 1978.
In 1971 I earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, CA. For 20
years I worked in the banking world ending my career writing and implementing regulatory
policy. In 1998 I earned a Paralegal Degree from San Joaquin College of Law. In September of
1998, I accepted a position with Strongtower preparing public securities church offerings. In
2010, I accepted a position with the California Baptist Foundation in their legal department.
The California Baptist Foundation is a non-profit religious organization that raises and manages
dollars for ministry purposes and causes.
During my spare time, I like to sew (quilting these days), embroider, gardening and
enjoy the grandchildren. At Hope I have served on the Omega Committee (chairman for 2
years), sing with the choir, a member of the Bell Choir, and for over 10 years I served as the
Wedding Hostess for the church working with the couple and at times resolving family issues.
As a member of the Call Committee, my primary gifts that can serve the committee are
my organization skills and attention to detail. My faith is strong, it is an internal light that keeps
us on a path of grace.
I see Hope continuing to look to the future with its vision and ministry to its youth,
members, community and sharing the gospel with the un-church. We are a very care giving
membership.
Garrett Wright
My name is Garrett Wright; I am the son of Danny and Laura Wright and the grandson of
Carrol and Shirley Kreul. I am 20 years old and am currently enrolled at Willow International
Center. I play guitar and have a passion for worship music.
I have been attending Hope my entire life and having been involved with many of
Hope’s ministries such as VBS, Food Pantry, the Whispering Woods Outreach, and spent three
years on Hope’s High School Leadership team. In addition to being involved in Hope’s many
ministries I have also had the privilege to be on the call team that brought in our current
contemporary worship director Wink Farrand. I have also been involved in the worship services
at Hope as I have played trumpet several times and I am a member of the Of The Vine band.
Something that I could bring to the call team is experience in the area of being on a call
team. When I was on the call team that brought in Wink, I honestly had no idea what to expect
and sometimes I felt a bit overwhelmed. But this time around I have a clearer picture at what a
search process looks like and what I should be doing in order to help the process run smoothly.
My vision for Hope is simple. All I can hope for is that God works in ways that only he
can. I could list off all the things that I want to see happen in the church, but so often we build
up these visions and focus on our wants or our desires instead of looking to God to show us
direction. So that’s why I dream of a church in which God is always first and that always extends
hope in Jesus. Thank you.
Bryan Wulf
I have proudly been a member of Hope Lutheran Church for the past 15 years, although
my heart was with Hope for many years before. I regularly participated in the high school
program when I was in high school, and enjoyed fellowship with my peers at numerous
activities. Before I was a member at Hope, I was baptized and raised at Bethel Lutheran Church
in Fresno where I grew up in the faith and served on church council as a deacon. I graduated
from CSU, Fresno and earned my teaching credential from National University. For the last 15
years I have been a second grade teacher at Jefferson Elementary with Clovis Unified. While at
Jefferson I have been the grade level chair for the past 9 years. In this capacity I have diligently
worked to organize, streamline, and create useful curriculum. In addition, I have been on
interview panels to hire teachers, custodians, and a vice principal. These hiring processes were
conducted with a panel that worked together to come to a consensus on one candidate.
While being a member at Hope I have served as an usher; first in the contemporary
service for nine years, and the last six years I have ushered in the traditional service. More
recently I have been serving on the Personnel Team where I have been able to learn and
understand the inner workings of the church. During this time I have had the opportunity to
work with a team approach to hire employees for our church. In addition, it is our charge to
keep in contact with the employees to see how they are doing and how things are going with
their job.
Since becoming a parent, I have seen firsthand the importance of the youth program at
our church. It is my hope that a strong youth program and inspirational sermons continue to be
the cornerstone of our church. Thank you for your consideration of nominating me to the Lead
Pastor Call Team.
