Rich Strom reported that Joe Howard has been diagnosed with congestive heart failure and will have bypass surgery. Rich asked us to keep Joe and his wife in our prayers. Joe's contact info is as follows:

Rich offered a prayer. We gather as we always do on Saturday morning. We gather because we enjoy the camaraderie and fellowship. At the same time we are called to a higher purpose. We are a group united by our conviction that what we do matters. I matters to our connunities and it matters to our mission of "Serving the Children of the World." We seek to use our resources of time, talent and money wisely. May our efforts bear fruit towards serving our communities and the children of the World. Please bless the members of this Club.

Kat Nelson led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Bob Nissen reminded us that the annual Craft Fair is fast approaching. It will be held one day on December 2nd. Bob expects between 60 to 80 vendors. Two major efforts are to help with setup late afternoon of December 1st and breakdown the late afternoon of December 2.

The Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) program was discussed by marketing teachers and DECA advisors Cortney Bushnell (PRHS) and Mike Diamond (LPHS). DECA is an association of marketing students that encourages the development of business and leadership skills through academic conferences and competitions. They asked for our help as judges for their annual DECA competition where students are given a real-life problem and then present their solution to a panel of judges. The district completion is scheduled for Thursday, November 30th at the Double Tree World Arena Hotel from 7:30 am to 12:30. This is a great opportunity for involvement with our youth! A signup sheet was distributed.

Benny Nasser went through the list of upcoming programs and encouraged us to let him know if you have ideas for programs at our Saturday meetings.

Jack Fry (MHKC Treasurer), was happy that Rich Strom was back from China, and that he also brought back our favorite bookkeeper, Kathy. Jack reminded us that our quarterly dues are due.

Rich Strom was five bucks happy that Kathy came back with him, and especially glad to be back in the U.S. While they were there, the Chinese National Congress was in session. The CNN and BBC broadcasts in their hotel room were blacked out as soon as coverage began, to avoid commentary by international news organizations.

There are two free, easy ways to donate money to the MHKC - without paying a nickel out of your own pocket. One is by getting a gift card (available from Mike Wangeman that comes with $5 credit) for Safeway or Kings Soopers. You can then indefinitely add

money to the card. Also, at Amazon.com Smile, you can designate Monument Hill Service Club as your charity organization and purchase items through Smile. Then Amazon donates .5% of all your purchases to our club.

Presentation to the Monument Hill Kiwanis Club

October 28, 2017

The program today was presented by students from the Palmer Ridge High School Music and Drama Departments who will be presenting the musical Little Women next weekend at Palmer Ridge High School. The faculty were represented by Josh Belk, the theater teacher, and Arianne Thomas, the music teacher. The student cast was represented by the following characters:

Character Played by

Jo March Madelyn Wible

Amy March Marissa Meadows

Beth March Allison Topps

Marmee March Ashley Byrnes

Meg March Lauren Bergeron

Professor "Fritz" Bhaer Tanner Harrold

Laurie and Theodore Laurence III Jackson Hurford-Reynolds

Based on Louisa May Alcott's classic 1869 semi-autobiographical novel, the story focuses on the four March sisters-brassy, tomboy-like, aspiring writer Jo, romantic Meg,

pretentious Amy, and kind-hearted Beth-and their beloved Marmee, at home in Concord, Massachusetts while their father is away serving as a Union Army chaplain during the Civil War. Intercut with the vignettes in which their lives unfold are several recreations of the melodramatic short stories Jo writes in her attic studio.

The cast presented 6 musical excerpts from the production:

Our Finest Dreams - Jo, Beth, Amy, and Meg about Christmas plans

Delighted - Marmee, Meg, Beth, and Jo about having been invited to a social event

Five Forever - Jo, Beth, Meg, Amy, and Laurie about their bond with one another

Astonishing - Jo about her reaction to having been asked to marry

Some Things Were Meant to Be - Beth and Jo about their impending parting

Small Umbrella in the Rain - Jo and Professor Bhaer about their changing relationship

The cast did a terrific job of entertaining our Club and those who attended were thoroughly impressed and appreciative. We even had to restrain Harry who, at one point, wanted to get up on the tables to dance.

Performances are in the Palmer Ridge High School Auditorium (use the Event Entrance) on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, 2-4 November 2017 at 7:00 pm with a matinee at 2:00 pm on Saturday 4 Nov only. Tickets are available at the door or online at: https://prhsco.booktix.com/. Tickets purchased online are $10 for adults (+ $1.50 fee/ticket) and $8 for students and seniors (+ $1.25 fee/ticket). Tickets purchased at the door are also $10 for adults and $8 for students/seniors, plus a $2 surcharge per ticket. The word from PRHS is that you can buy the 'senior' ticket if you think you're a senior, so use your own judgment and support the school drama club.

Come out and enjoy the show!!!

Happy Trails!

See you Saturday at:

Lewis Palmer D-38 Administration building

(a.k.a. Big Red) 146 Jefferson Street, Monument, CO 80921.
