ALL WEATHER SEASON

I am delighted to introduce the new ARC All-Weather season which runs from 14th November 2012 through to the 28th March 2013 at our three All-Weather tracks, Lingfield Park, Southwell and Wolverhampton.

I’m sure it will not have escaped your notice that we have just completed the replacement of the All-Weather surface at Lingfield Park. We have been absolutely delighted with how this new surface has bedded down and the initial feedback has been extremely complimentary. We believe that we have in Lingfield Park the finest All-Weather racecourse in Britain. The facilities are first class and the resort is complimented by the 4* Marriot Lingfield Park.

The new track compliments these facilities perfectly and we look forward to hosting and promoting Lingfield as the pre-eminent All-Weather racecourse in the UK.

Across all our tracks we have put together a balanced programme of races to suit all levels of horses during the winter with the highlight being the Blue Square Bet Winter Derby on Saturday 16th March at Lingfield Park. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Blue Square Bet for their continual sponsorship of the Blue Square Bet Winter Carnival and their popular Sprint Series which will take place every Saturday at Lingfield throughout January and February.

In addition the recent increase in Levy funding has enabled us to boost prize money throughout the season and details of our feature races can be found in the brochure.

We will once again be running the All-Weather Jockeys Championship based on wins at our All-Weather tracks during the season. The Champion Jockey will receive £10,000 with £5,000 to the runner up. Regular updates will be published daily in the Racing Post.

May I take this opportunity to wish you all a most successful All-Weather season and thank you for your continued support.

ALL WEATHER RAC INGHistory

History

It’s hard to believe that over more than two decades have passed since the pioneer All-Weather fixture was staged at Lingfield Park on 30th October, 1989. Ten races were staged, with the Conrad Allen trained Niklas Angel making history by taking the first under Richard Quinn.

The idea of an All-Weather track had been under discussion for some time due to many fixtures being lost to bad weather continually denting the industry’s finances. Two artificial tracks were created, the Equitrack at Lingfield Park and a fibresand track at Southwell, they opened within nine days of each other.

In the early days, All-Weather racing was regarded by some as a lowly product serving a purpose for low rated horses and betting revenue. But even in those early days, there were horses which either became track specialists or began a more high profile career on the All-Weather. The Charlie Elsey trained Rapporteur will be remembered by many and still holds

the Lingfield All-Weather record from 1994 with 14 wins. Another true wonder horse - Running Stag put Lingfield’s All-Weather track firmly on the map, after winning the inaugural Winter Derby at Lingfield in 1998 he went on to international fame on his successful global tour of the US, France, Dubai, Germany and Hong Kong. This tour included winning the MassCap (the Massachusetts Handicap) at Suffolk Downs in 2000, with a winners purse of $400,000

With the introduction of the Polytrack surface in 2002, All-Weather racing stepped up a level. The superior surface designed by Martin Collins and already widely used on trainers’ gallops meant younger and higher class horses were being entered and therefore the quality of the racing began to improve and a new race programme was introduced upgrading races and increasing prize money accordingly.

Arena Leisure continued to lead the way, investing into all three of its All-Weather tracks, re-developing and improving them for the future and setting a standard for others to follow. In May 2010 Lingfield Park saw the opening of a new 116 bedroom 4 star hotel known as the “Lingfield Park Marriot Hotel & Country Club”, which as well as serving as a business and leisure destination has proved hugely attractive to racegoers.

Racing on an artificial surface has a secure future in this country and globally, with races staged up to group level now in the UK. An intense race programme caters for a large percentage of the horse population and we’ll continue to witness many future stars both international and home based on our All-Weather tracks year round.

Lingfield Park is delighted to have launched the newly resurfaced Polytrack in October 2012, showing their committed to the future growth of All-Weather racing in the UK. This latest investment, complemented by the recent regeneration of this famous racecourse puts Lingfield Park firmly on the map as a major state-of-the-art racing, conference and leisure destination with facilities to match or better any in the country.

The Lingfield Park Marriott Hotel & Country Club is fully integrated with the racecourse and offers owners and trainers an excellent opportunity for overnight stays at discounted rates*.

Lingfield Park is pleased to be offering all owners and trainers with runners at our weekday fixtures during the All-Weather season (14th November 2012 – 28 March

2013) a three course lunch for up to four guests per runner in the Trackside Restaurant, for just £15 per person. Meals must be booked and pre-paid by 4pm the weekday (Monday –Friday) prior to raceday. Please call 01342 834 800 to book.

As an owner you will also have exclusive access to the Owners, Trainers and Annual Members Bar situated on the ground floor of the Grandstand, plus complimentary tea and coffee will be provided. To make your day extra special why not book one of our superb boxes or suites all overlooking the finishing line, available for private hire for parties of eight people or more.
