W inter driving is not foremost in a lot of people’s minds in much of Arizona, though northern Arizona knows it well, and even Valley residents will findthemselves behind the wheel and heading into the white stuff at times.

There are many factors involved in safe, confident and even enjoyable winterdriving ... from training to experience to understand the physics involved, to basicmaintenance and care of your vehicle, from appropriate winter tires to good wiperblades, a clean heater core, proper antifreeze, a scraper, brush and even an extrablanket, warm jacket and some water and snack bars carefully stashed.

But one key way to prepare for winter driving is in the selection of the vehicleyou purchase in the first place. Four-wheel- or all-wheel-drive vehicles are anobvious place to start. (Careful, though ... overconfidence in four-wheel drive is highon the accident list, right behind speed and liquor ... always train to master yournew technology.) About half of Arizona’s pickup and SUV buyers opt for four-wheeldrive, though many don’t need or use it. But a good all-wheel-drive sports sedan isa different animal, with enhanced abilities on not just snow, but monsoon-slickedpavement, gravel, and really just plain asphalt. One of these is the Jaguar X-Typesedan, which we were fortunate enough to drive on the specialized test and trainingtrack at the Bridgestone Winter Driving School in Steamboat Springs, Colorado(home to some 27 feet of snow per year). Let’s see if we learned anything.

Volkswagen New Beetle

NEW BEETLE IS ONE OF A KIND, LITERALLY Don’t hold your breath waiting for the next generation of the Volkswagen New Beetle, because itappears the company has no plans to redesign the popular small car. Because of its distinctive retrolook it will probably be limited to only an occasional design tweak or interior upgrade. After all,the original Beetle was produced for 40 years with only minor changes. According to StefanKrebsfanger, manager of product strategy for Volkswagen, the car will continue indefinitely as longas there is “natural demand” without massive incentives. If and when the New Beetle wears out itsmarket it will probably be replaced by another car that is “hip, cool and affordable, to add to thelineup at the bottom end.” ▼

illuminates, or if not, the light is red. Atransponder in the system transmits an“all clear” signal to the car’s electroniccontrol system and allows the driver todrive the car. The prototype is about 4inches long and 1.5 inches wide, butfuture miniaturization could allow thesystem to be combined into the remotecontrol. Saab anticipates the system willcost about $300, which is much less thanexisting vehicle-mounted systems. Notimetable for production has beenannounced.

MERCEDES CLS AMG SUPERCAR▲ Mercedes has been leaking picturesand details on its upcoming highperformance four-door coupe, the CLS55AMG. A 5.5-liter supercharged V-8 engineproducing 476 hp and 516 lb.ft. of torquewill power the new CLS AMG. Mercedessays it will accelerate from 0 to 62-mph in4.7 seconds and it has a top speed limitedto 155 mph. The suspension is a tunedversion of the Mercedes air suspensionwith 18-inch alloy wheels sporting255/40ZR tires in the front and 285/35ZRin the rear. The sleek looking sedan willdebut in September at the Paris

International Motor Show and will go onsale next January in Europe with a pricearound $100,000. This is about the sametime the regular versions of the CLS willdebut in the US market; the AMG willlikely come stateside in 2006.

GERMAN HORSEPOWER WARSAs Mercedes-Benz introduces AMGversions of the upcoming CLS four-doorcoupe, with power for the first AMGcoming from a 5.5-liter V-8 rated near500-hp, then in 2006 a second AMGmodel, the CLS65 AMG, powered by a6.0-liter twin turbo V-12 rated near 600-hp, BMW is taking notice. Not to beoutdone, BMW will be adding M versionsof the new 6 series cars. The power willbe coming from a new 5.5-liter V-10engine rated at 550-hp. The BMW willalso get a new seven-speed sequentialmanual gearbox.

CHEVY TRAILBLAZER SSChevrolet has been testing a highperformance version of the TrailblazerSUV at the famous Nürburgring track inGermany. This is the same track used todevelop the outstanding handling of theCadillac CTS along with many highperformance German vehicles. A 6.0-

liter 345-hp Corvette V-8 engine powersthe Trailblazer SS concept being tested, but it’s not known if the productionmodel will have the Corvette version or atruck version. The SS concept is loweredand has an electronic air suspension, stability control and the latest tractioncontrol system. The standard model isexpected to be rear-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive as an option. The SS isscheduled to go on sale late in 2005 as a2006 model.

VW TO MAKE A FEW W-12 TOUAREGSVolkswagen is building a small number ofspecial order Touareg SUVs powered bythe same 450-hp 12-cylinder engines thatare being used in the top Phaeton luxurysedan. FORD’S NEW FLAGSHIP FIVE HUNDRED Ford’s new flagship sedan, the Five Hundred, goes on sale this fall. Createdfrom an architecture developed by (Ford-owned) Volvo, the Five Hundred isabout the same length as the Ford Taurus but has about twice the rear-seatknee room and a trunk that is larger than Ford’s full-size Crown Victoria. Infact, the trunk is large enough to hold up to eight full-size golf bags. Uniqueto the Five hundred is the Command Seating™ position that sits up to fourinches higher than the comparable Toyota Camry seating position. Asophisticated 3.0-liter Duratec V-6 engine with a choice of all-new six-speedautomatic or continuously variable transmission powers the sedan. It alsohas an available all-wheel drive system. ▼

of 168 mph, which should competefavorably with the Porsche Cayenne twinturbo. The Touareg and the Cayenne weredeveloped jointly.

GMC SPORT WAGON FOR 2008While GMC trucks have traditionally beenbody-on-frame, this new vehicle will be acrossover style wagon with front- or all-wheel drive. It will be developed on theGM Lambda architecture that will alsocarry the second generation BuickRendezvous. The wagon was originallyscheduled for Pontiac but now may be areward to GMC dealers who have pushedthat brand’s sales to the number twoposition in the GM lineup with total salesof 563,479 in 2003.

NEW GM STARTER SYSTEMS General Motors plans to convert theMalibu from its traditional starter systemto a new belt-alternator system by 2008.With the traditional starter replaced by areworked alternator and a belt,Chevrolet expects to improve fuel econ-omy by about 12 percent, if the car alsouses a CVT (Continuously VariableTransmission). The system saves fuel byshutting off the engine during stops andrestarts when the driver presses theaccelerator. The new system will alsouse a 36-volt battery but with a 12-voltelectrical system.

TOYOTA DROPPING CELICA, MR2 SPYDERSlow sales of the Celica and the MR2Spyder have caused Toyota to pull theplug on the two sporty models at the endof the 2005 model year. Both of the carscame to the US market in 2000 to helpToyota attract a younger buyer. The Celicasales peaked the first year and havedeclined each year to only 14,856 lastyear and even lower so far in 2004. TheMR2, a great little sports car, but withvirtually no cargo space, never did takeoff in the US Sales the first year were only7,233 units, but last year dropped to only3,000. Toyota has not yet talked aboutreplacement vehicles.

BMW CUTS ENGINE WEIGHTOne of the best ways to improveperformance and fuel economy is toreduce the weight of a vehicle. BMW has

developed what it claims is the world’slightest six-cylinder engine in an effort tomake those improvements. The newengine is designed with a magnesium-alloy composite crankcase. The 3.0-literin-line six-cylinder engine weighs 22pounds less than its predecessor at only354 pounds. In addition to the lowerweight the engineers have increasedperformance by 12 percent and droppedfuel consumption also by 12 percent. Thelighter weight might have been helpful, but according to Klaus Borgmann, BMW’shead of powertrain engineering, most ofthe fuel savings is thanks to furtherrefinement in the Valvetronic enginemanagement system which was intro-duced three years ago. The new enginewill debut in the upcoming 630Ci coupeand convertible and will also go into the 7and 5 series, X3, X5 and Z4. The 3 serieswon’t get the new engine until the nextgeneration is launched.

FORD FREESTYLE BRIDGES GAPCombining traits of both a traditionalsedan with SUV design cues and availableall-wheel drive, the new Ford Freestylewill be one of the most versatile Fordsever built. It has seven-passenger chair-like seating in three rows, or can carrycargo as long as a 10-foot extensionladder when the front passenger seat andthe second and third rows are folded flat. The Freestyle has many new technologieslike a CVT (Continuously Variable Trans-mission) and Safety Canopy air curtainsystem that protects all three rows inside-impact collisions and rollovers. Itarrives at dealerships in the fall.

MAZDA CHALLENGES WRX & EVOLUTIONMazda plans to enter the highperformance rally car war currently beingwaged by the Subaru WRX andMitsubishi Evolution. Mazda will use theMazda6 model with a 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine with twin turbochargers, intercoolers, six-speed manual transmis-sion and all-wheel drive. The engine issaid to produce 276-hp and 265-lb.ft. oftorque. Look for the Mazda entry aroundmid-2005. ■

Delivering the driver’s edge to teen drivers.

Traditional driver’s education has focused on the skills needed to pass a driving test, withclassroom lectures and some behind-the-wheel “on-the-job training.” The DrivingMBA™program goes beyond this, bringing high-tech simulators to everyday drivers.

The DrivingMBA™ ComprehensiveDriving Tutoring Program• Rules of the Road® DVD : Award-winning interactive DVD tutorial for home use.

• Pre-Permit Driving Simulation Course : 5 hours total computer simulated driving experience gives

teens a solid foundation in fundamentals before they get behind the wheel.

• Safe Young Drivers : A book to supplement your own in-vehicle training.

• Advanced Decision Skill Building : The same high-end simulator used by police and other

professionals to improve behind-the-wheel decision-making skills.

• Profiler™ : Assesses your skills against a pro database (included with Advanced Decision Skill Building).

• DUI : Students in both simulator courses experience the negative impact upon vehicle control of driving

while impaired.

T he new Aston Martin DB9 adds V12

power to the formula of agility,

smoothness, beautiful design and

hand craftsmanship represented in the

DB7, the most successful Aston Martin in

history (see Arizona Driver, JulAug 2003).

Starting with a radical new aluminum-

bonded body frame, the DB9 is powered

by the latest Aston Martin 6.0-litre V12,

producing 450bhp and a top speed of 186

mph. The DB9 is the first car to be hand-

made at Aston Martin's new state-of-the-

art facility in Gaydon, Warwickshire,

where all future Aston Martin models will

be developed and built. All cars built at

Gaydon will be based on Aston Martin's

new VH [Vertical Horizontal] platform. This

is the first time in our history that the low-

volume automaker has had a totally

flexible yet dedicated Aston Martin

platform. The DB9 is the first car to use it,

leading the company to declare that this is

the most important Aston Martin ever.

The body frame is the most structurally

efficient in the world, taking into account

strength, torsional rigidity and weight. It

has double the rigidity of many rivals, as

well as being lighter, resulting in superior

handling and agility. All body panels are

either aluminum or lightweight compos-

ites, with magnesium on the steering

column and inner door frames. Even the

gear selector paddles are magnesium

alloy. The total weight is 3762 lbs.,

extremely light for a V12-powered car with

a long list of luxury features. This weight

savings delivers a top speed (manual

transmission) of 186mph and 0-162mph

acceleration in just 4.9 seconds.

Other technologically radical features

include a ZF 'drive-by-wire' six-speed

automatic gearbox that dispenses with a

traditional gear lever. Instead, the drive,

park, neutral and reverse controls are

selected by buttons. Touchtronic manual

mode enables the driver to change gear

using paddles mounted behind the

steering wheel. The automatic gearchange

has been tuned to provide the perfect

balance between super-fast operation and

comfortably smooth shifts. A conventional

six-speed manual gearbox is also offered.

Agility is optimized with a perfect 50:50

weight distribution, achieved partly by

putting the gearbox at the rear. A carbon

fibre shaft, running in a cast aluminum

DB9 TOUR IN PHOENIXAston Martin created a North American “Driven To the 9's Tour” to

launch the all-new DB9 Coupe and DB9 Volante. The Tour set up camp at

Scottsdale Aston Martin this summer. Basically a showroom event, there

was no driving in store this time around. The DB9 Coupe arrived this

summer, and the Volante is available later this year, so the event was part

first-look and part sneak-preview. Current Aston Martin drivers, hand-

picked prospects and a selected mix of automotive and lifestyle media

were invited. We were among the first to see the DB9 in both its Coupe

and Volante forms. And they look great. Last year’s “Power, Beauty and

Soul Tour” brought the DB7 GT great acclaim, and it is attributed with the

limited edition Aston Martin DB AR1 (American Roadster) selling out in

only seven weeks. No wonder there’s another Tour. ■

tube, delivers torque from the engine to the gearbox. Handling is further

improved by a light aluminum wishbone suspension and aluminum

bodied dampers. The whole DB9 cabin is hand-finished in premium

materials but has a simple, functional feel. Aluminum is used in the

interior, also; even the instrument dials are aluminum. If you get tired of

listening to the V-12’s glorious soundtrack, there is a state of the art

music system specially developed for AM by British sound experts Linn.

Of course, no Aston Martin would be an Aston Martin without a

beautiful body. The DB9's is a modern interpretation of a traditional

Aston Martin, the successor to such benchmark designs as the DB4 and

DB5. The aluminum hood is long and extends all the way from the car's

leading edge. There is a minimum number of 'cut' or 'shut' lines, to aid

styling simplicity and beauty. The Aston Martin DB9 is new from the

ground up. It is available now. ■

passengers to music on the radio toroadside events. PEMCO polled drivers

to learn what they perceive to be themost dangerous distractions.PEMCO will use that information inits safety-related consumer-education efforts, which include

fact sheets, the Perspective customernewsletter, and the consumer tipssection of pemco.com.

The poll showed a significanttrend: the more drivers admittedto performing a distracting activity, the less dangerous they saw theactivity. PEMCO sees danger inany type of driving distractionand encourages drivers to takeresponsibility for their drivinghabits and decide for them-selves which habits are safe.

“(Use) your own commonsense,” said Osterberg. “Don’tfall into that ‘group mentality’ andthink that eating while drivingmust be safe, just because you seeso many people do it. Even a secondor two of distraction can bedangerous. We see it all the time withrear-end collisions.”

PEMCO offers these tips for driverstempted to eat and drive:• If you know you’ll be stopping for a

quick bite on the trip, try to leave alittle earlier to allow time to eat awayfrom the car.

• If you pick up food from a drive-through, take a few extra minutes topark in the restaurant lot and eat. You’ll be safer, and you’ll enjoy yourfood more.

• If you’re traveling with someone, taketurns eating and driving. ■

Drivers Rate Danger Level of Common Driver Distractions in Insurance Poll

They may not think it’s safe, but most drivers admit to keeping one eye and one handon a meal while driving, according to a PEMCO Insurance poll on driver distraction

released in Seattle. Eating a meal turned out to be the most-common distractingactivity—65 percent of drivers stated they eat while driving. Fifty-eight percent ofdrivers acknowledged they talk on a cell phone while driving. Drivers also thought boththe activities were unsafe, along with several other common distracted driving activities.

The poll of 600 respondents also asked drivers to rate the danger of the followingcommon distracted driving activities. Drivers rated each activity on a scale from one tofive, with one being “completely safe” and five being “very dangerous.”

“We found that when drivers eat food or call a friend, they do so despite thinking it’sdangerous,” said Jon Osterberg, PEMCO Insurance spokesperson. “Our goal is to helpdrivers understand that when they do that, they’re going against their better judgment.”

Luxury transportation is accessible tomore consumers thanks to the Jaguar X-Type. You may still not know that you canbuy an entry-level Jaguar for just $29,950including delivery. I just can’t understandwhy there aren’t more on the road.

The base level X-type is a great value, but it’s also easy to run the price into themid-$40,000’s when you add the largerengine, automatic transmission and a halfdozen options. But if I were going tospend that much on a Jaguar, I’d probablystep up to the larger Jaguar S-Type.

Still the car has a Jaguar flavor withmuch of the elegance and charm weexpect from the famous Jaguar brand.

The distinctive wedge-shaped exteriorof the X-Type features the characteris-tically sleek grille, quad halogen head-lamps along with crisp detailing.

The interior uses classic Jaguar themeswhile introducing contemporary touchesthat provide a more comfortable andfunctional cockpit. Bird’s-eye maple woodveneers along with soft, luxurious trimmaterials and leather-covered seats addto the luxury of the interior.

The X-Type rides on a four-wheel inde-pendent suspension with standard all-

wheel drive with traction control, four-wheel disc brakes and a very good speed-sensitive steering system. The chassis andsuspension give the compact-size sedanvery good manners on all types of roadswith a smooth Jaguar style ride.

The front seats are elegant andcomfortable in a manner befitting a smal-ler Jaguar. The controls are well placedand easy to use. Rear seat legroom is a bitsnug. The trunk is spacious, holding 16.0cubic feet, or several large pieces ofluggage and supporting bags.

Coming standard on both the 2.5-literand the 3.0-liter models are the all-wheel-drive system, eight-way power driver’sseat, climate control, one-touch open/close power windows and AM/FM/cassette audio system. It also has remoteentry, central locking with securitysystem, tilt-telescoping steering wheel, heated and power door mirrors, puddlelights and the leather seating surfaces andbird’s-eye maple trim, driver and frontpassenger front and side airbags plusfront and rear side curtain airbags.

An optional Sport Package is availableon either model. It adds sport seats, aspoiler and 17-inch sport wheels. The X-

Type 2.5 has an entry price of $29,950and the 3.0 starts at $36,950 includingtransportation.

An ultra smooth 3.0-liter DOHC V-6(231-hp) engine with the no-chargeoptional five-speed automatic transmis-sion powered our test car. The auto-matic has the traditional Jaguar J-shifting pattern that allows the car to beshifted manually or automatically. While we like the automatic transmis-sion and the linkage, we found the ideaof pulling the shift lever toward the rearof the car to shift up a little backwardand a little disconcerting, especially thefirst few days of driving. Most cars withmanual shifting automatics require aforward push to shift up or a sidewaysmovement. We’re sure this would betotally natural after a week or twobehind the wheel.

Our test X-Type 3.0 was also equippedwith many of the available options—likespecial metallic paint, xenon headlampswith auto leveling, moonroof, split/foldrear seat, heated front seats, and thesport package that includes sport tires,

More than just another pretty face, the new Jaguar X-Type offers all-wheel-drive capability, a full range of features, and a surprisingly low base price.

sport alloy wheels, sport seats, sport sus-pension and dynamic stability control. With all these options and delivery, theprice came to $43,145.

Acceleration is strong and smooth withthe automatic transmission. We recorded75 mph in a run from where we pull ontothe highway and accelerate to the firstmailbox, or about one-eighth mile. Jaguarlists the 0-to-60-mph times for the auto-matic transmission version at 7.1 seconds, while the 5-speed manual is listed at a veryimpressive 6.6 seconds. We were comf-ortable around our 25-mph, 90-degree testcorner at 51 mph, which is above averagefor this type of car. EPA fuel economyestimates are 18 mpg in the city and 25mpg for highway driving. We averaged

21.3 mpg.Nothing turns us on as quickly as

luxury, elegance and performance andthe X-Type was a real turn-on. As theentry level model for the Jaguar brand, the X-Type is Jaguar’s bread and buttercar, making up more than half of thebrand’s sales in the US market. Combin-ing a rigid body, fine handling andelegant decor, the X-Type certainly has aluxurious feel in a compact size. It alsofits the bill as a good drivers car thataccelerates, corners and stops very well. The only downside is the pricing. While itis possible to get a nicely equipped car inthe low $30,000 range, a few options caneasily raise the price to equivalent base ofthe middle size Jaguar S-Type. ■

The interior of the 3.0-liter Jaguar X-Type is stunning, with partial leather and electronics galore.

Controls are convenient and easy to read, with a full range of steering-wheel-mounted controls.

W e arrived at Eagle County Airport, west of Vail, on a beautiful

midwinter Colorado day. Our destinationwas just west of Steamboat Springs, sometwo hours to the north in good weather, and just minutes from Yampa ValleyRegional Airport at Hayden, but the travelgurus had calculated this as the closestplace to arrive. As such, we were whiskedto the Cordillera Resort, which was, ofcourse, hot on the heels of infamy as thelocale for Kobe Bryant’s room service orlack thereof. Nice facility.

After orientation and a good night’ssleep, a small army of new Jaguar X-Types headed east on I-70 to Wolcott, then north on Colorado 131, destination:Kremmling, Colorado, Sportsman’sParadise (no baseball or football; thatwould be elk-hunting and fishing). Theroute would take drivers over Colorado134 and Gore Pass, a little-traveled finegenerally well-maintained two-laneblacktop. The weather was still great. Orwas it? At the heights of Gore Pass, therewas an isolated but significant winterstorm in progress, and this gave the X-Types’ all-wheel drive their first test, anda decent test it was. A test that waspassed with flying colors by allconcerned, as we arrived at the Subwayin Kremmling at our designated time and

with our designated appetites. (Somedrivers took an alternate route, off thetour map, by cutting through GoreCanyon to connect with ColoradoHighway 9 south of Kremmling, giving achance to try the drive system on gravelroads, and to take in what we know to beglorious scenery along and then highabove the Colorado River, where it has cuta canyon dramatic enough that one railline and one dirt road are bothengineering challenges that only augmentthe scenery. Arriving in Kremmling, thosecars were actually cleaner than the paved-highway set, as they had completelymissed the snowstorm (and the volcanicscoria and general slop that splash allover a vehicle in those conditions onColorado’s highways).

The next day, we headed north again, but this time straight into SteamboatSprings, taking Highway 131 its fulldistance from Wolcott to US 40 just westof Rabbit Ears Pass (and just south ofSteamboat). As we had broken a vital pairof polarized prescription sunglasses, whacked with a metal camera case, whileexiting the small plane at Eagle, we had todeviate from the authorized travel routeby some 100 yards for a quick repair, forwhich we apologize again to the Jaguarlogistics team, but it certainly is better to

have those glasses on the white-on-whiteice track. After cookies and wraps andanother bit of orientation, it was tracktime.

[Correspondent’s note: I did actually livein Colorado for awhile before (and actually, originally, after) Arizona. Right in North-west Colorado, in fact. In fact, right inSteamboat Springs, home of the Bridge-stone Winter Driving School. In fact, theSchool was our client, and we producedtheir manuals, brochures and demonstra-tion displays and such. In fact, I lived therefor 28 years. And drove some 30,000 milesa year on the local roads, where it snowsan average 27 feet per year. And on theroads to and from Denver, some 175 mileseach way, with three traverses of theContinental Divide in each direction. In asequence of vehicles up through Audiquattros... four total, three turbo quattrosand two S-quattros. Without an accident. And on schedule. So I would never brag—Murphy’s Law and knock on wood and allthat—but I would claim some experience atthis type of driving.

Track time was the big thing for much ofthis event, though, and that turns out to bea whole ’nother story. Surrounded by stop-watches, cameras, instructors, seasoned

other variables in technique balancedagainst the absence or presence ofelectronic assistance and/or override.

All-wheel drive has its proponents andits detractors. We like it; detractors say itadds weight to the vehicle, which is true, and that it limits some of their fun. Wesay it is like a cat on rails and providessupremely accurate performance rightwhere you point it, on dry roads, wetroads, icy/snow roads, gravel, or thejuncture between or among any of theabove. Similarly, front-wheel drive has itsproponents and detractors. Most heateddebates about such things can be settledby an agreement that if you are used toone system and take up driving withanother, some track time and trainingabout the characteristics of the new andunfamiliar system are heartily recom-mended. Our bottom line on the tractioncontrol, stability control and otherenhancements of the X-Type is quitesimilar: the reason it can all be turned onor off is that there is no perfect answer asto whether performance and safety will

always be better with or without it in play. The engineers may suggest that this is,indeed, the point, that careful (and/orperhaps intuitive) analysis of conditionswill lead the driver to know exactly whento turn the feature on or off. Much as welean against automation and override, weare inclined to think many drivers will notacquire the skillset to select the bestsettings themselves at all times. But wesuspect this isn’t a problem. We wereable to muster great performance (andbad) using the systems involved, acti-vated or deactivated ... and we wouldanticipate that any owner will find theirown best comfort and performancepoints with regular use. We also continueto recommend training and experience,so it’s always worth considering a flight toHayden, Colorado’s Yampa Valley Reg-ional Airport ... or Eagle Airport if youprefer ... for some serious time at theBridgestone Winter Driving School And,with or without snow on your horizons,we can assure you the Jaguar X-Type withAWD is worth a serious look. ■

So there’s some perspec-tive. Back to our story!]

The Jaguar X-Type boasts a full-time all-wheel-drive system with a 60% rear-driveemphasis. Not quite like the familiar Audiquattro’s engineering, but each with itspurported advantages. On top of that, itfeatures Dynamic Stability Control (withEmergency Brake Assist), with an on/offswitch. And that’s where the fun kicks in.In short, we had many laps on thechallenging track at the BridgestoneWinter Driving School. We were timed, filmed, critiqued, reviewed, and sent totry some more. ■ The latest rumor aboutMercedes bringing the smallerA-Class to the United States hastaken a new twist lately asreports say longer wheelbaseversion will be offered next yearas a 2006 model. It’s likely toget a new B-Class designationand it’s expected to have designelements similar to theupcoming GST sport wagon.

■ Mazda is planning tointroduce a turbo version of the four-doorRX-8 sports car at the Tokyo auto show in2005. Rather than an exhaust-driventurbo, the RX-8 will use a new electricallyassisted turbocharger designed to meetincreasingly stringent emission regula-tions and reduce the turbo lag.

■ The upcoming Saab 9-7x sport utility, which is a very good-looking reconfig-uration of the Chevrolet Trailblazer SUV,will be short-lived. The truck based SUV

will be replaced in a year or two by a newunibody crossover platform that will bedeveloped from the upcoming seven-

passenger Subaru crossover. The firstSaab SUV will get the same 4.2-liter (275-hp) inline six-cylinder or 5.3-liter (300-

hp) V-8 as the Trailblazer, but there is noindication what engine the 9-7xcrossover will get.

■ A six-year-old Chinese car companycalled Geely said it plans to export itsUliou sedan to the United States. ■ The new Jaguar XK has a self-restraintdevice called the Automatic Speed Limiter(ASL) that allows the driver to set a speedthat he doesn’t want to exceed. The ASL

will not allow the car to go beyond thatspeed, even if the accelerator is floored. When the brakes are applied, the systemis deactivated.

■ A Chrysler insider has confirmed theupcoming sedan version of the DodgeMagnum wagon will bring back theDodge Charger name from the 1960’s.The large sedan will be built on the samerear-wheel drive platform and use stylingsimilar to the popular new Chrysler 300when it debuts for 2006.

■ Infiniti is building a coupe andconvertible based on the second genera-tion M45 sedan (2005). All three will usea stretch version of the same architectureas the critically acclaimed G35 (or theJapanese GT-R Skyline). Both the newcoupe and convertible will be four-seatersand will likely be 2006 models.

■ When it comes time for Toyota toreplace the Scion xB, don’t look for adramatic change, in fact, don’t look forthe xB at all. According to Scion VicePresident, Jim Farley, when the timecomes for a change to a Scion vehicle, they will probably be dropped andreplaced by an entirely different vehiclewith a different name. Is this the start ofdisposable cars?

■ Motorola says it will have cell phonessoon that will be able to locate your car, start it, check the fuel level, the temper-ature, lock or unlock the doors and honk

the horn from anywhere inthe world. It sounds like apersonal OnStar system.

■ Honda may add a cyl-inder deactivation system tothe V-6 engine in its HondaPilot and Acura MDX SUVs inorder to increase fuel econ-omy. Honda has developedthe system that cuts off threecylinders when the vehicle isrunning at cruising speeds. The system will be used inthe upcoming Accord Hybrid

With this project Audi opens up anew chapter in product placement.Previously, Audi has always suppliedvolume-production cars to movieproductions. In individual cases, such as Mission: Impossible II,these cars were even used inmovies before their marketlaunch. With I, ROBOT and thesystematic development of a “car ofthe future,” Audi goes far beyond itsprevious product placement activities.

Audi has been participating as anautomobile partner in major movieproductions for many years. Inaddition to John Frankenheimer’saction classic Ronin with Jean Reno,Robert De Niro and an Audi S8 (1998),Audi played the automobile lead inThe Insider (1999) featuring AcademyAward® Winner Russell Crowe,Mission Impossible II (starring TomCruise, 2000), The MothmanProphecies (starring Richard Gere,2002), About a Boy (starring HughGrant, 2002) and Reese Witherspoon’sLegally Blond 2 (2003). ■

T ogether with Twentieth CenturyFox, Audi raises product place-ment to a new level: the

German premium automobile manu-facturer developed a spectacular con-cept car specially for this film. Auditackled its most ambitious productplacement project ever: for the epicevent motion picture I, ROBOT, AudiDesign developed the spectacularvehicle, which helps leading actor WillSmith—a homicide detective in theyear 2035—solve a mystery that couldhave grave consequences for thehuman race.

Thecinemagoer will therefore see the newAudi front-end with the typical single-frame grille in the movie.

The RSQ includes special features

suggested by movie director AlexProyas. The mid-engined sports car, operated by the story’s police depart-ment, races through the Chicago ofthe future not on wheels but onspheres. Its two doors are rear-hingedto the C-posts of the body and openaccording to the butterfly principle.

In addition to the RSQ concept car,Audi supplied further series- produc-
