Admission to a Shriners Burn Hospital is essentially the same as to a Shriners Hospital for Children. Here, however, it must be stressed that timing may be of utmost importance. The final outcome of a burn case may be greatly dependent upon the type of treatment and the speed with which it can be started. Therefore in emergency, the Chief Surgeon has the authority to admit the patient, having the application completed at a later date. If then you know of an emergency burn case, immediately call the Shine Ambassador in the area. Let’s not miss a chance to put out a helping hand. Be a true Shriner!

Potentate’s Message

Welcome to March, the month of Saint Patrick’s Day, March Madness, Yoshi Monte Carlos and the Director Staff Beer Tasting.

I can almost hear the chips mounting up with the anticipation of big winnings. The chips will be turned in for unique prizes and fun will be had by all. Put on your calendar Saturday March 1st and plan to attend the Yoshi Monte Carlos Night.

If it’s March Madness and exotic brews from several craft breweries you are seeking, then the Director Staff Beer Tasting is the place to be on Friday March 28th. I can hardly wait to experience the new and unusual tastes.

As I am writing this page the first week of February, it is too early to determine how well the Circus turned out financially. We do know the weather played a significant factor in attendance. Those who came were entertained by some of the best acts in the country. A special thanks to Steve Trump and his team for their tireless efforts to make the show a success.

Each and every Noble and Lady, who came out in such bad weather to help, ensured that our Circus worked like a well oiled machine. With the weather as rough as it was, we had a tremendous turn out of help and participation THANK YOU, THANK YOU! Your efforts went above and beyond expectations.

Mizpah’s Spring Ceremonial will be April 19th. We will have a First and Second Session. Plan on attending and bring your candidate. Remember membership is every Noble’s responsibility. Help us make great Masons, great Shriners. We will begin at 10:00 am. Afterwards, there will be light snacks and refreshments.

The Sportsman Raffle Kickoff is scheduled for March 18th. Please plan on attending and pickup your tickets to sell. We hope to outdo last year’s event and to help this happen the list of guns has been improved with better quality fire arms.

I am so honored to be part of Mizpah Shrine Temple. We have a hard working dedicated team of Nobles and Ladies who are able to accomplish so much. Both Lady Kathy and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who have worked so hard to make our Circus a success.

Mitte will use his story of receiving treatment for cerebral palsy at Shriners Hospitals for Children to help other families learn more about the care available and to encourage public support of the organization.

(TAMPA, Florida) Shriners Hospitals for Chil-dren® is pleased to announce former patient and award- winning actor RJ Mitte as a national Love to the rescue Ambassador™ for their 2014 Love to the rescue® campaign. Mitte will share his personal story of receiving both treatment for cerebral palsy and encouragement to accept no limits to living with a disability through a series of Public Service An-nouncements and other appearances through the year.

This February, RJ Mitte invites the public to join him and send their Love to the rescue to the children by making a donation to Shriners Hospitals for Children at lovetotherescue.org. Supporters can also post a Valentine’s Day note to the Wall of Love that will be shared with the patients at Shriners Hospitals for Children.

At the age of 3, Mitte was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, a neurological condition affecting muscle tone, movement and coordination. He was referred to the Shriners Hospital for Children in Shreveport, LA, when he was noticed walking on his toes. To correct his walking, the orthopaedic experts at Shri-ners Hospitals for Children recommended a casting procedure instead of an invasive surgery, which had been recommended by other doctors. Mitte was treated by the medical experts and physical therapy specialists at Shriners Hospitals for Children for most of his childhood, and, as a result, overcame many of the physical and verbal effects of cerebral palsy. “I can’t thank Shriners Hospitals for Children enough for what they did to help me overcome the effects of cerebral palsy. Had it not been for my doctors and therapists, I would not be walking and talking as well as I am today, “ said RJ Mitte. “I know first-hand that Shriners Hospitals for Children is a special place where kids are given a life of possibilities because they send Love to the rescue every day. “

Mitte recently visited Shriners Hospitals for Children — Los Angeles to meet patients and to talk about the bond and support shared between children living with disabilities.

“We are honored to help RJ share his story so others living with disabilities see that there really are end-less possibilities to what they can achieve,” said John Cinotto, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Shriners Hospitals for Children. “Every day Shriners Hospitals for Children sends Love to the rescue by encouraging patients to accept no limits throughout their treatment process. Working with RJ will help us highlight the in-novative pediatric care available at Shriners Hospitals for Children.”

About RJ MitteRJ Mitte is an actor best known for his role as Walter "Flynn" White Jr. on the AMC series Breaking Bad. The show was just awarded Best Drama at the 2014 Golden Globes and the 2014 SAG Award for Best Ensemble. After moving to Hollywood in 2006, Mitte began his acting career with several appearances as an extra on Hannah Montana Show, 7th Heaven and Weeds. Mitte is currently appearing on ABC Family’s Switched at Birth, where he is the new love interest for the series lead.

About Shriners Hospitals for Children Shriners Hospitals for Children is changing lives every day through innovative pediatric specialty care, world-class research and outstanding medical education. Our 22 locations, located in the United States, Canada and Mexico provide advanced care for children with ortho-paedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate.

Greetings Nobles,

The move into the new Shrine center has been accomplished and we are still adapting to the new facilities. Food service is being developed with incorporation of a new menu in the lounge.

We are still working on the move of the KHYBER trophies and deceased member memorial name plates. The severe weather has hampered the move as well as the energy level of the members.

Thanks to the members who worked the circus to make it a success despite the lousy weather. It was a bummer to not see the school children fill the auditorium for the two sessions.

The next Khyber meeting will be March 25 in the lounge at 7:00. Socializing will start at 6:00 followed by dinner from the menu at 6:30. Spring has to be just around the corner.

Fraternally, Jim Crawford, Secretary

Khyber Gun ClubThe Bagpipers are still hopeful that everyone is surviving the messy, first time in a long time, real winter weather that we have been enduring. As I compose this note, the low temperature predicted for tomorrows evening is -8. This will be about the 4th or 5th week in a row with subzero temps. Oh well. The weather has been challenging to our practice efforts, however, we are enduring.

We are looking forward to celebrating St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th. We have in the past played some outdoor gigs, just to cool down a little bit. Right now, I just can’t imagine that happening. But we’ll hope. That is the only event that we have planned as of now.

Anyone interested in learning to play the pipes or drums, please note that we practice every Wednesday evening at 7:00 PM, weather permitting. We always have room for one more piper or drummer.

Last month’s “bagpipe question of the month” was, how many tenor drones does the bagpipe have. I’m not going to give the answer and see if any non pipers ever read our Allah Bi articles. I will print the answer. Along with the next question when a non piper answers my question.

Mark Roach, Bagpipe President

This winter will go down in history as one of the coldest and one most of us will remember as having the most snow. This just creates more problems when you need to make trips with young patients to the hospital. We all should thank the Shrine drivers who scrape the snow and ice off of our vans in bad conditions and do their thing. It sure would be great to have our vans inside especially this time of the year. This idea may be a project we can work for in the future.

I would like to remind all Hospital unit members that our meetings are the 3rd. Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. At our first meeting in the new building in January we only had 3 persons present and so we really wasn’t able to have a business meeting with that few members present. Please mark your calendars and maybe the weather will get better and we can be back to normal next month. I know you are all busy but the Circus is over and we can look forward to a great year here at Mizpah.

Thanks, Dick Kessie, Sec.

Hospital Unit

As with a lot of other organizations, the 2014 weather has put a crimp in the band’s rehearsal schedule. Hopefully by now the weatherman has brought us some fairer weather so that the band may enjoy the new room at Mizpah’s new quarters. Just a reminder that rehearsals are as in the past on Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M.

Bandmaster Eli has acquired some new music to spice up our forthcoming concert programs. However we do need to apply our musicianship so that they may be presented in a musical fashion. He encourages all members to make every effort to be in attendance. At present there are no scheduled performances on the calendar but we need to keep “in musical shape”

He also invites anyone who enjoys playing an instrument to join in of the fellowship (even if you haven't touched the instrument in sometime, it only takes a small amount of effort to “get the chops back”) We'd love to have you join us.

Eli also wants to thank all those who turned out for the Friday night Circus Concert. (even though again it was not the best of weather.

Be sure to check your e-mails for any last minute changes regarding upcoming events.

The biggest item of conversation now is weather, wheather we get colder or more snow. It sure wasn't nice for the busses coming to the circus, we, Bob D, Ed H, and my self, only parked five buses coming from Lagrange for both Thursday and Friday. but the preformence still went on for the few that could make it. Congrads to Dir. Steve Trump and Helpers for an other-wise bad weather good job. For Friday's Night's preformence Ed, Jerry, Jeff and I carried the Armed Forces Flags with the Color Guard for the opening ceremony to start the show to a nice crowd. Because of all the nasty weather new Pres. Jeff canceled Jan. meeting and moved Feb. to the 2th Thursday to catch up on neccessary business. We did have a short meeting at the Jan. LNO at the club house. The few that braved the weather enjoyed some Pizza and good conversation that solved no world problems, but helped keep the Ucher players honest. Our Feb. LNO was hosted by John and Jan Brandon at Salvatori's on the 22th and on March 22, Bob and Sue Dumford is the host at the Sleepy Owl in Syracuse, Happy Hour start at 6:pm, eat at 7:00. Be sure to attend and Honor our Ladies and enjoy. Other business at the short meeting comfrimed Horse Show dates as June 21 and 22. Chairman John VanVoorst has been having meetings to set class programs and committees to manage the show and my job is to organize the extra help offered from other clubs, units and nobles. It's been many years since we have had strickly Horse Show and our hope is to gain back many of our old exhibitors that supported so great. We also hope that Mother Nature gets all this bad weather over and leaves us some nice to help.

Our 2014 Roster Books are here ready to pass out to all attending meeting, be sure to come and help the new cook Bill and new Pres. Jeff start us out for our first meeting this year. I hope we can pitch the snow shovels, I've had my fill of that stuff and ready for Tulips, bring it to a motion and we can vote on it at the meeting.

See you there and Happy Shoveling

Horse PatrolOur Winter Celebration in January was well attended with over sixty five attending. Full slates of officers were installed by Potentate Steve Cowan, thanks to Steve and the Divan for their support. Our entertainment this year was Mike Hemmelgarn he is a comedian, juggler and ventriloquist. Mike put on a great show with many from the audience who were asked to participate with him. We have booked the Potawatomi Inn at Pokagon State Park for Saturday January 3rd, 2015 for the Winter Celebration. All are welcome to attend this fun and fellowship event, more information to come.

Thanks to all that helped at the Mizpah Shrine Circus, your help is what makes our Circus a success.Looks like next year we will bring the fourth and fifth graders to the 2015 Miizpah Shrine Circus.

If you have not been to the new Mizpah Shrine Center you are missing a beautiful and functional facility.Hope everyone had fun on the Potentates trip. Look forward to hearing all of the stories.

Our next meeting is March 19th, 2014 and we are hosting the Meet and Greet at the Angola Moose Lodge. The Meet and Greet starts at 5:00 pm. and runs to 7:00 pm, please invite your Mason and non Mason friends to learn more about the Masonic fraternity. Your help hosting this event is needed please plan to attend and share your Masonic experiences with others.

The Spring Ceremonial is April 19th; we hope to bring new members from the Meet and Greet to become Nobles of our fraternity.

The 68th Annual Shrine Circus is history or another year. The weather was not good at all for everyone involved.

A special thank you to those who were able to come and help. The book sales went fairly well, but could always be better.

An extra special thank you goes out to the Legion of Honor ladies, who took care of refreshments for the Shrine workers. The baked goods are always a treat. The soups and sandwiches and hot coffee helped warm everyone as well.

Thank you

We have been real lucky that the weather has held out just long enough to get our regular meetings in this year so far. Our last meeting was on February 8th, at the Shrine Horse grounds. We had 60 brave hillbilly’s hitch up their wagons and venture down the hillside for a very good meeting and meal. Thanks go to Ma Roach for fixin’ up some nice tastin’ chili, and to the rest of the clan for fillin’ in with side dishes and desserts. Yeehaw. We then had a brief business meeting before initiating and welcoming 3 Shriners and 4 gals into the clan. The new members are : Carl and Heather Brown, Don and Glenna Raber, Doug and Vicki Western, and Teresa Bishop. Yeehaw!

Before we could gather, because of the 12 inch snow we had received earlier in the week, Scott Smith plowed down to the glare ice, and Tim Yagel hand sprinkled salt so our vehicles would stay where we parked them. Thanks to both of you. As usual, thanks to the whole club for helping to clean up afterward.

Our next occasion to gather will be on March 8th, 2014, at 6:00 PM. Mike and Shannon Hardiek will host. Bring a side dish or dessert, and whatever beverage you want to enjoy that evening. If you are not a member of the Hillbilly Clan and would like to take a test drive of the Clan before joining, that would be an opportunity to come see what genuine fun and frivolity we have, keeping in mind that we still raise money to help kids. That is what it is all about.

Until next month,

Greetings Nobles,

Our March meeting will be held once again at Flanagan’s on Covington Rd.(behind Covington Plaza) on March 24th at 6:30 pm.(This is actually the 4th Monday and not the third as usual. St. Patrick’s Day falls on 3rd Monday and that would make it extremely difficult to seat our large group!) Remember that our Ladies are invited to our meetings when we meet outside of the temple.

ONION time again! Our club was one of the top sellers last year for the annual Vidalia Onion sale. We sold 450 bags of onions! I think with a little added support from those of you who have not sold in the past we can top that number! I would like to see us be able to sell 500 bags this year.

The Mizpah Shrine Children’s Easter hosted by the YOSHI will be held on Sat. April 12, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Crazy Pinz.(Crazy Pinz is located on Northland Blvd. off Lima Rd. just north of Wallen) Have your child’s taken picture with the Easter Bunny. Please plan to bring the kids, grandkids, nieces, and nephews! Along with bowling, a soda and hotdog will be included with the fun pass that each child will receive. The fun pass also allows them to enjoy games at the fun center. We look forward to seeing you there. This is a great opportunity for us to invite non-Shriners so they can see what our organization is about and hopefully interest them in joining our fraternity.

Fraternally, Dave Bowman, Secretary/Treasurer

YoshiOne of the highlights of the year is when we take the 5th graders to the Circus. Mother Nature said, “Not this year Shriners”. President Brian Kyler would like to thank those individuals that volunteered to ride the buses and were at Richards Restaurant ready to go the morning of the Circus. However, not all was lost that day. Someone, unknown to us, paid for our breakfast that morning. It sometimes takes an act like this to reinforce the belief that what we do as Shiners is worthwhile. Someone along the way was touched by a Shriner.

Swiss Steak Supper will be held on Saturday, March 29th at the Horse Show Grounds in Columbia City. The day will begin with a 7:00am breakfast at Big G’s. After breakfast, we will gather at the Horse Show Grounds to prepare for the supper which will run from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. Anyone wishing to donate foodstuffs or make a monetary donation may do so by contacting Noble Randy Krider at 260-248-8315. Please come and enjoy the fun and as always your support and involvement is greatly appreciated.

Upcoming dates:

> March 27th – Monthly Meeting Horse Patrol Grounds

> March 29th - Swiss Steak Supper Horse Patrol Grounds

Whitley Co / Giant FezWhat a winter! We had to cancel the January stated meeting because of cold temperatures and forecasts of high winds. An e-mail was sent out to all APC members on the Friday before the meeting. If you did not get an e-mail it is because we do not have your e-mail address. Please call me at 260-691-0414 and we will add you to the club member e-mail list. If you do not have e-mail but would like to have it, let me know (same number) and I will get you going. If you don’t have it and don’t want it, make sure that you let a member know so we can call you. I would be happy to do that or have another member call you. We just don’t want you to be unaware of changes.

We want to thank all members who devoted time to the Circus and made that event a smash hit. Again weather was an issue but for those who came out a double thanks.

March 5th is the stated meeting for the Shrine and APC is going to be serving supper. Please plan on being there no later than 6:30PM at the Shrine Center to get all ready to go at 7:00PM. Let’s make a great showing to support our new Divan and if you haven’t yet toured the Center, take a good look around.

March 14-16 is the Winter Tractor and Gas Engine Show in Auburn and March 21-23 is the Spring Tractor & Engine Show in Fort Wayne. Put these dates on your calendar and we will be making final plans at the stated meeting at the end of February. If you have any questions about these events before then, contact our Parade Marshall for details. Looks like the kick-off shows will be coming up fast so brush the snow off those tractors (or dig them out) because they will be here before you can say “burrrrr-cold”.

Hope all of you are well and either back from your winter sojourn or making plans to return. If I were you I would take my time. For those of you like me, stay warm and keep your fingers out of the snow blower.

See you at the stated meeting, February 24th at 7:00PM. Come early and enjoy the fellowship.

Dear Nobles,

It is really time to get your pre-orders in for our onions. We get $1.00 or more per bag pre sold. This is easy money for the Unit.

We also need to get our ducks in a row for the best golf outing in all Shrinedom. OURS! Get those foursomes and hole sponsors lined up now. May 31st is right around the corner. We also need guys to help the morning of the outing, so if you are like me and cannot play, help with registration in the morning. It is fun giving the golfers a hard time about their wardrobe choices…lol.

We are also close to Ceremonial time. Let’s make this new building rock with new members and old members cutting loose.

I hope the weather breaks soon or I will.

Unit News

Dear Smile Buddies,

Thanks to Konscientious Karen in the front office at the Shrine (cool nickname, huh?), I was reminded to get this article off in time to make this issue!

The circus was outstanding. Although the weather did not cooperate as far as providing large audiences for each show, we were still able to perform and perfect our skit. We all learned a lot about how to get an idea across through gestures and selling our excitement. It was fun to watch the crazy antics of Gus (what a clown!) and to see the group have so much participation. It was great the way that Richard (the ring master) helped us with the dialogue and how he made the audience participant (a child selected at random) the center of attraction. Sambo followed this up after the skit by giving each selected child a goodie bag including autographed pictures of the clowns. I know that that child will remember the circus for a long time.

It’s outstanding to see Fuzzy back clowning with us. He still has more recovery to undertake, but we were afraid that we would have to do the circus without him. I hope you noticed the artwork on the side of the clown canon. Janice Fosnaugh did a fine job of drawing those clowns “free hand”. Both she and Fuzzy have been a welcome addition to our clown family over the past year.

Just when we thought things would slow down, the administration at the Chicago Shrine Hospital wants us to come up (in costume) to present an oversized check representing our donation for the TV we paid to have installed in the waiting area. They have asked that we come up during the week to be there while patients are present. They are also making this a media event. We are working to get a bus to take up the fifteen clowns and their spouses. Sambo (our president) coordinated with the hospital for Valentine’s Day (so that we could share the love). I hope to have more information by the next edition.

Well, enough for now. Smile, entertain and “Bump a Nose”!

Joe “Lucky Lewey” Jenckes

Clowns ChantersGreetings from the Chanters

We are getting accustomed to our new digs; which aren’t too bad. We don’t miss the stairs but we sure miss the great pop corn in the bar! What happened to it?

The weather has taken its toll on attendance and now we have several members heading for more agreeable climates. But we still plug away and welcome any newcomers that would like to join us

As usual we are looking for programs and additional singers. We could use a few basses, tenors and baritones and could probably even work in an alto or soprano.

We continue to meet every Monday, but have moved up our rehearsal time to 7:00. So, if you can spare an hour or so on Monday nights, we would love to have you join us for some good harmony and good fun. As usual our immediate past president, once removed, will buy you a drink after that first rehearsal.

Mercy. You will continue to have the opportunity to add custom beads to your bracelet that represent important moments from throughout the year. The first bead is a heart dangle that reflects the love we have for our kids

and propels us to do all that we do. Our love for the kids is the foundation for our hospitals.

Daughters of the Nile

Ladies of the Household,

Where has the year gone? It seems like just yesterday that I was frantically making my arrangements for installation. I have been honored and humbled to serve Teti Sheri as the 75th Queen and to have been a part of the 100 year celebration of Daughters of the Nile. My sincere hope is that Teti Sheri will be around for another 75 years and beyond.

My blessings are with the incoming Queen and Officers. May they have the best year that Teti Sheri has ever had and I will be proud to serve as Jr. Past Queen for the coming year.

Here are a few dates that you need to keep in mind.

March 12, 2014 will be our election of officers and it is my sincere hope that all members who are able will attend this important meeting. This will also be our Memorial Service for the members who have passed away this year.

Installation of new officers March 23rd and practice is March 22nd.

Remember SPRING is just around the corner and the flowers will soon be blooming.

Sparkles of Nile Love,

Queen Karen Rothgeb

If I should die and leave you here a while, be not like others sore undone,

who keep long vigil by the silent dust. For my sake turn again to life and smile,

nerving thy heart and trembling hand to do something to comfort other hearts than thine. Complete these dear unfinished tasks of mine

and I perchance may therein comfort you.
