HISTORY

The Central Coast Cal-SOAP Consortium was established in 2001 and serves students in five school districts and two community colleges in North Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties. Central Coast Cal-SOAP is part of 15 consortia throughout California serving over 150,000 students. It is one of the largest outreach programs of its kind in California.

The California Student Opportunity and Access Program, or Cal-SOAP, is a statewide program designed to increase the number of students attending college. The program serves elementary, middle school, high school, and community college students who:

1. Are from low-income families. 2. Will be the first in their family to attend college. 3. Are from areas or schools with low-eligibility or college participation rates.

By building collaborative relationships with federal, state and local sponsors, Cal-SOAP is working to increase the number or students who take advantage of postsecondary opportunities.

The goal of the program is to advise, motivate and inform students regarding college admissions and financial aid information. To achieve this goal, Cal-SOAP offers free tutoring and peer advising to students within the target population.

FINANCIAL AID - YOU CAN AFFORD COLLEGE!

Think college is out of reach? The truth is, just about everyone who wants to go to college can afford it. Nationwide, seven out of ten full-time college students receive financial aid. In fact, last year, more than $4 million in grants, scholarships, and loans was awarded to Allan Hancock College students.

College is possible!Applying for financial aid is free! Simply complete the form online. For maximum financial award, apply by March 2.

Need help? We're here for you!Call us at 805-922-6966 x3200 or email us.

Some Things You Should Know1. Do not assume you don’t qualify for financial aid. In fact, one out of two applicants

receives financial assistance. 2. Applying for financial aid is free! Simply complete the form online at www.fafsa.gov. 3. For maximum financial award, apply by March 2. You can still apply after that date

and anytime throughout the year. 4. If you are receiving any financial aid other than a Board of Governor's fee waiver

(BOG), dropping classes could result in the student repaying federal funds already received or could reduce future financial aid funding. It is recommended that you contact the financial aid office before dropping classes.

5. All student payments for the summer 2015 semester will be based upon the number of units the student is enrolled in as of June 28, 2015. The units enrolled in as of that date will determine the amount of Pell and FSEOG funds a student will receive for the summer semester. Any increases or decreases made to the student's unit load after June 28 will not be considered when calculating the payment amount for the summer semester. However, if a student withdraws from all classes and is no longer enrolled for the summer semester, the student may owe a repayment of funds received to the federal government.

6. You must enroll in all classes for the summer semester including any 6 week, 8 week or other short term classes offered during the summer semester by June 28, 2015 to be paid for those classes. If a student is not enrolled for semester length courses, but initially enrolls later in the semester in short term courses, then units used to calculate payment will be based on the Sunday immediately after the student's initial registration. For more information on disbursements of Title IV when a student withdraws and overpayments, review our “Treatment of Title IV Policies”.

"I took an unorthodox path at Hancock. I went from failing out of school to returning a few years later to earn a 4.0 GPA and being

accepted into UCLA. Sometimes I can't believe where I am today considering everything I have faced. I know I would have never made it this far without my family and the amazing faculty and staff at Hancock."Submit a Testimonial »

professional career is when our program hosts a graduation ceremony for our noncredit students; students who have earned an ESL certificate, GED or a computer certificate. TESTING SERVICES

Mission Statement: The mission of the Testing Center is to assist students to navigate the assessment process.

The Testing Center is located on the Santa Maria campus and also offers testing at the Lompoc Valley Center. Many students need to take the START placement test before registering for classes; a photo ID is required and you will need to have your AHC Student ID number that begins with the letter 'H' for the test. This number is assigned to you after you complete the admissions application. Check the START date schedule to the right for a list of test dates and times.

The Testing Center supports matriculation by providing assessment in reading, writing, and mathematics to all new Hancock students. Computerized assessment for English as a second language credit classes is also provided. In addition, students can sign up for the GED tests to earn their GED certificate.

Residents living within the district may arrange test proctoring for distance learning courses taken through other colleges/universities or can arrange to take the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP); a proctoring fee of $35 is charged for each exam. AHC is a member of the National College Testing Association and adheres to NCTA Professional Standards and Guidelines. All students taking the Accuplacer test for a college other than AHC will be charged a proctoring fee and will need to bring a check or money order for $35 payable to AHC at the time of testing. The test is free only for students who plan to attend AHC.

they do but they also know how to get you to learn the material. My instructor really personalizes it, really makes it something that you can grasp onto and remember the stories and therefore remember the content. It's been an incredible experience. I really do enjoy it a lot."Submit a Testimonial »

SPOTLIGHTIvan LucateroCal Poly SLO, Aerospace Engineering

I excelled in math and science in school, so engineering was the right fit and I just had to figure out how to get it

done. Throughout high school, I took courses at Allan Hancock College (AHC), and graduated as my high school valedictorian. I then attended AHC in search of a smooth transition to a university. I was able to take my lower division engineering courses and form a great relationship with my professors. While at AHC, I received multiple scholarships form the Allan Hancock Foundation, Santa Barbara Foundation, and MESA-NSF Scholarship. I then attended California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo, to pursue an aerospace engineering degree. After just one year at Cal Poly, I was accepted into one of the most prestigious internship programs that NASA offers, the Aeronautics Academy.Submit a Testimonial »
