EASTER BLESSINGS FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners,

On behalf of the Priests, Deacons and Staff Members I wish all of you a Blessed Easter with the hope that you

will be filled with Easter joy.

A lot has happened since I wrote an Easter Message, last year, to the Parishioners of St. Agnes Parish. Today

my Easter Message is for both St. Athanasius Parish and St. Agnes Parish, as I have been named Pastor of

both. Cardinal O’Malley has a great sense of humor giving me a Collaborative for my 71st Birthday! With the

help of God, and from you lots of prayers and goodwill I promise to do my best to lead us forward so that the

best days of the Reading Catholic Community are ahead of us.

For all of us Lent has been a time of penance, fasting and works of charity as we prepare for the hope and joy

that comes from the Resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter. We entered Lent with uncertainty, not knowing

who the pastor would be and where he would be leading us. As we move into Collaboration with its

unknowns I can’t help but think of the situation of the Apostles in the Early Church, “Lord, you want us to do

what! There are only 11 of us!” There are times I feel the same way about our “new situation” and I know

that many of you feel the same way. But here we are two thousand years later celebrating Jesus Christ’s

triumph over His death on the Cross to the glory of the Resurrection, the Apostles succeeded. Now it’s our

turn. The Early Church was open to the gifts of the Holy Spirit and they changed the world and I believe that

we can do the same thing.

A few weeks ago I received an email from the Amazing Parish Team that I want to share a part of with you,

Dioceses must pray for wisdom and courage in making the best decision possible in consolidating

parishes. They must face the reality that synergy, cost savings and most importantly, renewal,

require clarity and boldness, not half-measures or compromise. This is not an easy situation, but it is

a glorious time for the Church because it is exactly what God has given us to do at this time. With

the wisdom and courage He gives us, and with the willingness to suffer in the midst of necessary

change, we can make these challenging times a source of revitalization. Isn’t that how God always

works in the world?”

Jesus has given us a job to do. I promise to do the best I can, with the help of the Holy Spirit, to make the

Reading Catholic Community a beacon of faith and hope in a world that desperately needs it. Together we

will succeed, will you join me?

Have a Blessed and Joy filled Easter

Fr. Steve Rock

Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord

Please pray for the success of the St. Agnes/St. Athanasius Collaborative.

May we open our hearts to allow the Holy Spirit to work within and among us.

May we intentionally seek to lead others to Jesus through our actions and

build His Church in our community.

Our Lord revealed a

powerful prayer to Saint

Faustina, the Chaplet of The

Divine Mercy. It encourages

us to ask for God’s mercy and to be merciful to

others and to trust completely in Jesus. Though

the prayer may be said at any time, Our Lord has

specifically requested that this prayer be used as a

novena just prior to Divine Mercy Sunday.

We invite you to join us on Good Friday, April 19 at

7:00 pm to 7:25 pm at St. Athanasius, and each

following evening until the completion of the

novena on Saturday, April 27.

The first two meetings will be at St. Athanasius

Church. The last seven meetings will be at St. Agnes

Church.

The Resurrection of the Lord

St. Peter reminds us today that Jesus Christ “…

commissioned us to preach to the people and testify

that he is the one appointed by God”. Who are the

people you might “preach to” or speak to today

about Christ? Pray for the courage to be like Peter

and Mary Magdalen and tell your story – the story of

how God works in your life. This is not just good

news, it is Good News. Share it!

Growing up on the edge of poverty, Hector wrestled with homelessness, and was struggling to find food. While playing basketball in a local Church league, he met Fr. Paul O’Brien, who encouraged him to go to college.

Fr. Paul was there for Hector at every step of his journey to college and beyond. With his help and guidance, Hector went on to play basketball for Regis College, graduate, and now works as a school counselor to give back to students the same hope and inspiration he received. Like Fr. Paul, our senior priests in good standing have been helping others for decades.

As we celebrate this Easter with our families and friends, please remember the Boston priests who have helped us along our life journey and consider making a gift of thanks to the special Easter collection for their health and retirement needs.

Funds from this special collection are managed by the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust – an independently managed trust with a majority lay board of trustees. The funds are used for the sole benefit of active and senior priests in good standing.
