It is the end of the school year and I’msure that a lot of students feel the sameas I do and are ready for summer. Actu-ally, teachers are ready also. If you listenaround you will hear teachers and stu-dents saying that they can’t wait to sleepin again and hang out with their friendsand family.

In my opinion, this year has been anexperimental one with the change fromblock scheduling to the nine-period day. Some teachers like the shorter classesbecause of problem students, but othersargue that classes aren’t long enough to

teach or learn the lessons.I have witnessed incidents where in-

terruptions have taken valuable timefrom the shorter 45-minute classes. Allstudents then suffer when it comes timeto take a test because the learning envi-ronment has been compromised.

Despite the difficult transition, we havehad some fun times, even though it lookslike more change is in store. Next yearthe schedule may change again althoughit isn’t the only thing that will change atHampshire High.

Counselor Bonnie Wilcox and teacherand coach Larry See are retiring; there-fore, we will have a new counselor and anew physical education teacher and ten-nis coach. They will be missed, though, and we wish them the best in the newchapter they are about to embark upon.

Congratulations, Mrs. Wilcox and Mr.See, for your many years of dedicationto the students of Hampshire County.

All I can say is that next year I will be asenior and this school is still makingchanges, so my best advice for any up-coming freshman is, “Don’t get upset orgo totally crazy if you are confused byyour classes or your schedules becausethat’s all part of the high school process.”

Have a great summer and we’ll see youin August.

Summer is here and cold weather isgone. The snow is a mere memory.

We are out of school, and now it’s timeto have some fun.

It’s time to get out our bathing suitsand sunglasses—time to spend our lazydays by the pool.

Summer is always a blast. It is hot andyou can do whatever you want withoutschedules and bells. The only part I amregretting is that it is only two monthslong.

As I grow older, summers seem to begetting shorter. Why is that? I have noclue why, but now we are starting schooleven earlier in August.

Enjoy Your Shortened Summer

Johnathan Allen delivers his Valedictory addressat the 2010 Commencement.

Seniors march to the tune of “Pomp and Circum-stance” prior to the graduation ceremony.

Looking Back...Looking Forward

“It would be nice if oursummer could be as long

as we thought it waswhen we were

in kindergarten.”

Summer is a time for us to hang outwith friends and relax and not worryabout school work or anything for thatmatter. It would be nice if our summercould be as long as we thought it waswhen we were in kindergarten.

The whole reason we have a summeris for the students to get a refreshingbreak from school work. True, many ofus may still have jobs where we have towork, but these responsibilities shouldnot hurt the way we think of our much-anticipated summer.

My advice to soon to be seniors, jun-iors, sophomores and freshmen? Havefun this summer. Don’t worry about nextschool year...yet.

Have fun and be safe.

The annual Baccalaureate servicewas held in the Hampshire Highauditorium on May 23. The event wassponsored by the Romney ChristianMinisterial Association.

The welcome and invocation wasgiven by Pastor Jack Hanks of the FirstBaptist Church of Romney. AaronFields, a 2009 graduate of HampshireHigh School, performed a piano solo.He also provided prelude music beforethe ceremony.

The message of encouragement wasgiven by Pastor Tom Rowan whopreaches at Tearcoat Church of theBrethren in Augusta. He is the fatherof senior Heather Rowan.

Rowan’s message was taken fromProverbs 3:5-6, which says, “Trust inthe Lord with all your heart and leannot on your own understanding; in allyour ways acknowledge him and hewill make your paths straight.” Hecommented that God can change one’slife. He encouraged seniors to take thedirection they wanted and let God leadtheir way.

Harmony performed between thetwo messages. Camie Fout, HannahFunk, Jennifer Grant, Austin Andersonand Lucas Orndorff sang the song“Great is the Lord,” accompanied byFields on the piano.

The message was given by Pastor MikeMyers who is the father of senior JoshMyers. The central idea of his messagecan be found in Matthew 6:33, whichsays, “But seek first his kingdom and hisrighteousness, and all these things willbe given to you as well.” The title of hismessage was “Top Priorities.”

Myers noted that everyone’s prioritieswill be different. He asked questions ofthe seniors such as, “How are youpreparing for life after high school?” and“What are your future actions?” Myerstouched on three main aspects during hisspeech: love, ambition and destination.

The benediction was given by seniorDenise Sudlow, president of Faith inAction. Before the benediction, shecongratulated her fellow classmates ontheir successful high school career.
