With a family history of diabetes, Joyce has struggled to keep her hemoglobin A1c level down over the years. She became a patient of Alliance Medical Ministry in 2016, and sees Dr. Maggie Burkhead. Today, Joyce is happy to report that she has successfully lowered her hemoglobin A1c and is off all medications. So…how did she do it? “Diet and exercise!” Joyce took Cooking Matters @ Alliance, learning how to cook, meal plan, and shop for healthy foods on a budget. “Cooking Matters made me more conscious of how I cook with vegetables and how I select them. Now I have a love affair going with veggies! Joyce also participated in Seed to Supper, a five-week garden education program in partnership with the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle. Volunteer Master Gardeners teach patients how to grow their own vegetables, offering education around soil testing, pest control, and garden scheduling. What’s up next for Joyce? “I’m passing along what I learned to others…I’m helping teach a Cooking Matters class! I’m also busy planning my Fall garden.” “If I didn’t have Alliance, I’d probably be in the Emergency Room. It really means so much to have access to these programs through my doctor’s office. Alliance 2017 Update Alliance Medical Ministry changed its

fiscal year to July 1 through June 30. We’d like to highlight clinic, program and patient achievements and thank

our generous donors, volunteers and supporters who helped Alliance make a difference in many lives from

January to June 30, 2017.

JOYCE WIGGINS: Patient turned gardener, and student turned teacher…all in six months!

Meet Joyce. Joyce is a mother and grandmother. With a family history of diabetes, Joyce has

struggled to keep her hemoglobin A1c level down over the years. She became a patient of

Alliance Medical Ministry in 2016, and sees Dr. Maggie Burkhead.

Today, Joyce is happy to report that she has successfully lowered her hemoglobin A1c and is

off all medications. So…how did she do it?

“Diet and exercise!” Joyce took Cooking Matters @ Alliance, learning how to cook, meal plan,

and shop for healthy foods on a budget. “Cooking Matters made me more conscious of how I

cook with vegetables and how I select them. Now I have a love affair going with veggies!

Joyce also participated in Seed to Supper, a five-week garden education program in partnership

with the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle. Volunteer Master Gardeners teach patients how to grow their

own vegetables, offering education around soil testing, pest control, and garden scheduling.

What’s up next for Joyce? “I’m passing along what I learned to others…I’m helping teach a

Cooking Matters class! I’m also busy planning my Fall garden.”

“If I didn’t have Alliance, I’d probably be in the Emergency Room. It really means so much to

have access to these programs through my doctor’s office. If you change your nutrition habits,

you can make a difference in a health.”

FARM TO TABLE D INNEROn May 11, Alliance Medical Ministry hosted more than 350 guests at our third Farm to Table Dinner. The Alliance Community Garden was in full bloom, serving as a beautiful backdrop for a special evening. Alliance staff offered clinic tours, sharing information about the care and services provided

at Alliance, community partners providing off-site care to our patients,

and volunteer opportunities.

The evening began with a cocktail hour in the garden featuring craft cocktails hand-mixed by Camp Cocktail. Irregardless Cafe prepared a delicious family-style dinner, with arugula and greens from the Alliance Community Garden! Vanilla ice cream served by Andia’s Homemade Ice Cream ended the

evening ended on a sweet note.

The evening’s program included testimonials provided by Alliance patients Angela, Kathy, Jan, Pablo, and Maria. This was followed by an exciting live auction of enticing packages including a rooftop cock-tail party, in-home chef dinner, and trip to Barcelona.
