Planning: Get to know your topicGood research takes time

Reference sources: Subject encyclopedias (not Wikipedia), dictionaries, etc.

Good overview of topic Useful terminology for further research Available in the Reference section of library Some available electronically (online, E-book)

Library catalogue(s): Allison / VST / St. Mark’s & UBC Search for books Subject headings

Planning: Plan your search Search Strategy

Use terminology from background research and synonyms of keywords

Natural language searching not always useful in electronic databases (e.g arian heresy)

Consider KeywordsUse reference material for: • names, • people, • concepts, • terminology

Consider Synonymse.g. ‘Church’, synonyms might be: • congregation, • assembly, • gathering, • ecclesical, . . . ecclesiology, denomination, ecclesiastical, body of Christ.

Searching: And, Or, Not (Boolean operators)

Arian AND Heresy

“AND” NARROWS the search

Arian OR Heresy

“OR” BROADENS the search

Arian NOT Heresy

“NOT” LIMITS the search

Use NOT with caution

Allison Library Winter 2015

Combining Boolean Operators

Refine a search by grouping synonyms

For example

Ethics AND (Christian OR Islamic)

(ethics OR integrity) AND (Christian OR Islamic)

Search strategies: Truncation and Wildcards

Truncation: use *Reform*

* = wild card for any letters after the “m” will search for . . .

Reforms

Reformed

Reformation
