BUSY LIVES AND HEALTHY CHOICESby Physician’s Choice Wellness - Becky Anderson

It is a month into 2014, and I hope everyone is still adhering to their New Year resolution. Now that the holidays are finished and January has passed, our daily lives are falling back into our normal routines and patterns. This is the time when a majority of folks start drifting from their resolution as old habits tend to resurface. The first month when everyone is dedicated to their resolution is a great starting point, but it gets harder to keep that resolution during this second month. February is a crucial time to turn the corner in making that resolution into a lifestyle change. As our lives fall back into a daily routine, the business of our everyday lives seems to be the biggest barrier to transforming your resolution into a lifestyle change. Being on the go driving kids to various practices and events or running from meeting to meeting will always leave the

door open for a lapse in judgment regarding eating and nutritional habits. That is because generally speaking the quick, cheaper, and convenient options usually offer very little to zero nutritional value. Grabbing a burger or a bag of chips from the vending machine seems to be a popular choice for those who have to get lunch on the go, but I am here to tell you that there are healthier and more nutritional options available that will not break your wallet. The best ways to ensure to you are exercising better nutritional eating habits throughout your busy day on the go and fighting temptation is to bring your lunch and pack your own snacks. Most of us do not have time every morning to make a lunch so here are a few options available to those of us on the go that you can find in just about every local deli and grocery store. A nice simple cold cut sandwich with a cup of yogurt is a great tasting and great nutritional lunch. Yogurt and the yogurt parfaits are a popular substitute, but what about the people who do not like yogurt? A cup of mixed fruit is another popular substitute

to chips. I will never advise eating fast food on a weekly basis, but even most fast food chains offer a healthier, low calorie menu, or at the very least will substitute a small bag of apples instead of fries. Healthy and nutritional snacks are easier to grab on the go or to bring from home. Yogurt, again, is a popular choice for a mid-afternoon snack. Granola bars make for a great nutritional snack instead of chips or a candy bar. With all the various flavors of granola bars now there will be at least one flavor that will entice your taste buds. A piece of fruit like an orange or banana is always a great snack as well. There are even low calorie high vitamin fruit gummies that taste delicious that make better snacks than the common chip. I know this is all easier said than done, but believe me, it does get easier. As humans we are habitual creatures, and once that habit is instilled in our brain it is hard to break that habit because the habit turned into a lifestyle. Support is going to be your best weapon to break bad habits and instilling new habits. Support has many forms. It can be working out with a friend,

or visiting the Physician’s Choice Wellness website or becoming our friend on Facebook to receive our daily nutritional tips, recipes, among an array of helpful advice designed to lead to a better you.

Many women will spend hours in the gym doing cardio each week. Suggest lifting weights, and they look at you like you are crazy. Why is that? Well, many of you havebeen misinformed over the years and have been lead to believe many myths aboutwomen and lifting weights. Let’s look at a couple of those myths, as well as discuss whyincorporating lifting weight in your workout program is so important. Myth #1: You are going to get bulky. Simply not true. The male and female bodybuilders

you see with muscles on top of muscles have put in years of training and lifting heavy weights to achieve that look. By lifting lighter weights with more repetitions you canachieve that lean, toned and natural look. Not to mention, doing squats will give you anatural butt lift that even Sir Mix-a-Lot would be proud of. Myth #2: Muscle weighs more than fat so you will actually gain weight. Again, not true. One pound of muscle weighs the same as one pound of fat….one pound. However, whenyou compare them in size, muscle is denser. This means a pound of muscle is smallerin size than a pound of fat. You will have a slimmer build at the same body weight with muscle than you would with fat. The benefits are endless when it comes to lifting weights and gaining muscle. One of my favorite benefits is that the more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism tends tobe. This translates into more

calories burned throughout the day. What does this mean for you? You can either eat more or lose more weight. If you are happy with your current weight, then you may have to eat more to maintain that weight. If you are trying to lose weight, while maintaining a healthy diet with adequate calorie consumption, the addedmuscle will aid in the weight loss. Just remember, I said a healthy diet with adequate calorie consumption. Any diet too low in calories will hinder muscle growth and send thebody into starvation mode, actually making it more difficult to lose weight. You actually need to eat to lose weight. Who would have thought? Another great benefit is stronger bones. With women having a higher rate of osteoporosis, weight training is crucial. By placing the small stress on the bones thatcomes with lifting weights, the body responds by saying we need to make these bones

stronger. Not only does it reduce bone loss as we age, but it may actually help build new bone. I could go on for days about all the benefits that come from weight training. These range from the lean body and weight loss that we discussed, to the ability of reducing injury and fighting depression. The key is to educate yourself. Most gyms will offer an orientation to their equipment. If not, or if you would like more instruction on how to incorporate weight training into your routine, seek out a personal trainer. At least for one session to familiarize yourself with the equipment and proper form. Stick with it and watch your body transform.

FEBRUARY TEA TALK by Kevin McDonnell, PhD

Organic teas potentially offer numerous health benefits. Yerba “Mate” Tea is being featured in this edition of “Let’s talk Tea”. Mate’ is a herbal tea from South America has been used there and in Europe as an “Energy Drink”, an “Exercise Enhancing Drink” providing needed energy and decreasing lactic acid from accumulating in your muscles which cause the soreness after exercise, and a “Weight Loss Drink”. It has been suggested that Mate’ Tea may do the following: increase your metabolism, make your body more efficiently use carbohydrates, and make you feel full, thereby decreasingyour appetite. It has been used as substitute for coffee, providing similar stimulant qualities “for the morning jolt” but with the added benefit of being referred to as a

“Multi-Vitamin in a Cup”. Mate’ Tea contains Vitamins A, most of the B complex, C,E, numerous Minerals, amino acids, polyphenols, and antioxidants as high as 5 times that of green Tea. Therefore, there have studies on the relationship between drinking Mate’ Tea and decreased obesity, arthritis risk, LDL Cholesterol Levels, and cardiovascular disease. Trinkets Tea and Me offers numerous Mate’ Teas from our basic organic Mate’ to a “Mango Mate”, and the very popular “Mocha Nut Mate’ “. We always suggest that you do your own research, discuss the information with your physician, and draw your own conclusions on the health benefits of various Teas. However, note that researchstudies are likely to use the Best Premium Teas. So, don’t

“shortchange” yourself. Buy Premium Teas and save money at the same time. Come to Trinkets Tea and Me, an alternative to the “Overpriced High Pressure Mall Store”. Enjoy a relaxing pressure free atmosphere where you can discuss Teas, pay the best prices in town, and maybe hear a song

from Tina - “Kirkwood’s singing Tea lady”. Trinkets Tea and Me, a teashop in downtown Kirkwood, located at 217 S. Kirkwood Rd. between Spencer’s Grill and Imo’s, has expanded to nearly 100 premium loose leaf teas for 2014. As always, the teas are at the lowest prices in the St. Louis area.

Myofascial Release, Hot Stone Massage, Trigger Point, Medical Massage for Arthritis, Sports Massage, Indian Head Massage, Structural Relief Therapy, and Lymph Drainage are just a few of the many wonderful massage modalities that can provide healthy benefits for the body and mind. At Creekside Massage all of the above are available to you. Which will you choose? In this season of colds,

flu, and sinus infections, you may need to jump start your immune system and a Lymphatic Drainage massage may be needed. The Lymphatic system transports white blood cells and antibodies that aid with immunity, and it removes waste on a cellular level. This type of massage is a very specific treatment in which the therapist uses very light pressure and long, gentle, rhythmic strokes to increase lymphatic flow in a specific pattern thus moving toxins out of the body. Unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system does not have the benefit of the heart as a “pumping” mechanism. The circulation of lymph fluid requires pressure from muscle contraction, pressure fluctuation in the abdomen from breathing, or pressure from a massage. The specific pressure and patterns of touch follow the structure of the

lymphatic system and assist in the contraction of lymphangions (tiny muscle units). If there are scars, blockages, or surgical changes to the body, a trained Lymphatic Drainage therapist can move lymph past these obstacles. The precise design of Lymphatic Drainage massage moves the stagnant fluids in the tissue, allowing the body to detox and regenerate healthy tissue. Beneficial e!ects upon the immune system are delivered by moving the milky lymph fluid with the substances needed by the cells to fight o! disease. This massage is appropriate when recovering from surgery, burns, or infections. Lymph Drainage can visibly reduce edema (swelling), especially around the neck and face, gives relief from chronic pain and acute inflammation from allergies and eczema, and can

address the loss of vitality that sometimes occurs with aging. When deciding to promote your health and making your choice for massage, consider trying Lymphatic Drainage. It is gentle and specific, and it will help you achieve your goals for immune health. At Creekside Massage, our goal is your health and wellness.

Are you taking a trip in the near future? Here are a few Tips and Tricks for Different Locales. It’s not uncommon for people to take trips over the winter months to warm up a little and enjoy a different scene or hit the slopes for the more adventurous types. Your skin notices the changes in climate and may react differently to your typical skin care regimen. Here are a few tips that Katie Rodan and Kathy Fields, of Rodan + Fields Dermatologists and the creators of Proactiv® Solutions have put together to help you no matter where your travels might take you. S.O.S for Dry, Dehydrated Skin Avoid long, hot showers; they actually draw the moisture out of your skin and make you itchy. Instead take more tepid, quick showers. Apply a heavy moisturizer regularly after bathing or showering while skin is still damp to seal in extra moisture. If soaking in a warm bath; use bath oil. Use a loofah sponge or body microdermabrasion product regularly with warm water to boost circulation and remove dead skin cells. Rodan + Fields has excellent microdermabrasion products for

your face, body and lips. In addition, keep humidity in your home at about 50% or use a humidifier.

Heading to the mountains or high – altitude

Slather on extra moisturizer in the morning and at night. And don’t forget about the sunscreen. UV radiation increases 10-12% for every 3,000 feet of elevation. So even if you can’t see the sun, apply sunscreen with antioxidants to protect your skin. There’s a difference between UVB and UVA rays. UVB, The Burning Rays are the ones you may be most familiar with. These are the rays that can cause painful and red, visible sunburns. Take note, that the sun’s rays are strongest between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. Along with burning these UVB rays also can cause skin cancer. UVA, the Aging Rays penetrate deep into the dermis, causing tremendous damage over time. They have the ability to destroy collagen and elastin, causing wrinkles and sagging. UVA rays also stimulate pigment-producing melanocytes to release brown melanin, resulting in “liver spots” on the face, hands, and chest – a true hallmark of aged skin. Rodan + Fields Redefine Triple Defense Cream hydrates and protects your face from the harsh damaging rays and the Redefine Hand Regimen hydrates and protects your hands from the damaging rays. Protect your lips as well. The sun can be relentless at higher altitudes. Rodan +

Fields Essentials Lip Shield SPF 25 is perfect for the beach or the slopes and glides on smoothly.

Heading to the Tropics? Keep your skin looking fresh!

Use a clay based mask weekly to unclog your pores and help prevent blemishes. Rodan + Fields Redefine Daily Cleansing Mask is recommended. Heat and humidity increase oil production. Apply oil-free moisturizer only to areas of the face that feel dry and tight. Your sunscreen comes off with your sweat, so reapply often. Mineral sunscreen containing zinc oxide can have a mattifying effect and may work better for oily skin. Looking to eliminate the lines and wrinkles, reverse your sun damage, or melasma?

Are you challenged with sensitive skin or rosacea or suffering from hormonal acne? Then let’s talk! For all of your skin care needs or questions, please reach out to me at 720-260-8206 for a free skin care consultation.

There are many other artists making a living in Bentonsport and their many works can be found on sale at the Bentonsport Artisan Coop. Another great stop is at the fanciful candy and fudge shop, Forever Sweet Creations, where everyone’s inner child is satisfied!Bentonsport is truly a “must-see” for visitors! Another village not to be missed is Keosauqua. Keosauqua is home to the Van Buren County Courthouse which was built in 1843 and is the oldest continuously operated courthouse in Iowa and the second oldest in the United States. It’s a great example of a Federal-style structure and was the largest building west of the Mississippi River at the time. The original courtroom has been restored and is open to the public for tour when the court is not in session. The Pearson house, built in 1847, is an old brick and stone house that served as a hiding place for run-away slaves prior to the Civil War. The home is filled with period furnishings and views of the secret hiding place under the floor boards. Another great stop is at Hotel Manning. This hotel has the appearance of a beached riverboat settled upon the banks of

the Des Moines River and features antique filled rooms. But no visit to Keosauqua would be complete without a stop at Bonaparte Retreat for dinner. Here diners experience a delectable meal in the old grist mill that was built in 1878. This restaurant is so popular and reasonably priced, that folks drive miles to savor a thick, juicy steak in this one of a kind establishment. It is in the village of Milton that cheese connoisseurs from around the world gather in gratitude at Milton Creamery! The Musser family moved to Milton in 1992 from Pennsylvania and values their Mennonite traditions of hard work and simple living. Their goal was to produce a European style aged cheddar, and boy did they do that well! Their Prairie Breeze cheese is an award winning Alpine style cheddar that is a dry, sharp cheese which has been aged for a minimum of nine months. Prairie Breeze won the #1 open hard cheese in its class at the 2009 US Championship Cheese Contest. It also won best in category in 2010 at the Cheese Awards in London, the only American entry along with ten British cheddars. A stop not to be missed! Another unique must-see is a visit to Yoder’s Indian Creek Furniture. Eldon Yoder and his family run this business crafting a huge selection of furniture from native timbers. This shop is brimming with dining and bedroom sets along with

rustic cedar log furniture, bird feeders, gazebos and much more. Keokuk Water Works Park is another attraction that deserves some time and exploration. It is here that many geodes, Iowa’s state rock, and fossils can be found embedded into a 12 foot high portion of the 345 million year old Mississippian limestone bluff along one entire wall of a 300 foot building at the park. There is also a rock mine here for exploring and a gift shop where folks may “dig” for their very own geode! The Villages of Van Buren are such sweet treasures and exploring this area is truly a delight. Step back in time, slow down your pace, and allow yourself the luxury of a visit to the villages!

I have been very fortunate to travel to many places throughout the world but when I’m asked my favorite destination , I don’t hesitate at all: It’s ALASKA!I love majestic landscapes and they just don’t get any bigger or more majestic than our 49th state. In a world of technology and instant media access, we ,as human beings ,need a place to retreat to and replenish our souls. We need to see and hear the ancient sound of glaciers calving into a cold sea. We need to see a mama grizzly bear and her sow digging up roots in Denali National Park. We need to see Bald eagles soaring past mountain tops and we need to see a humpback whale breach out of a calm and steady sea. We need to reconnect with the

primal, wild parts of our world and when we do, our own souls rejoice and we become replenished. It is a privilege to share this part of our world with others and I find myself accompanying groups to Alaska every May. It is such a beautiful month to journey here, as the mountaintops are still snow covered and all of the animals are waking up and exploring the beginnings of summer. It’s the start of the Alaska season at this time of year and the towns aren’t overrun with tourists like they will be in June, July and August. The weather in May is just perfect for exploration. I recommend that my travelers layer as we typically experience weather that ranges from the mid 50’s to near 80 degrees. In fact, it’s not unusual to walk through Juneau in late May dressed in shorts and a t-shirt. So, what do I like to do while in Alaska? The very first thing I do is breathe deeply. There is nothing that compares to fresh Alaskan air; it feels like you are breathing for the very first time in your life. In this case, it’s good to inhale! Exploring the local galleries and eateries is something I always look forward to. I never miss the opportunity to have a meal of fresh crab legs and lobster bisque at Tracy’s King Crab Shack ( a

discreetly hidden treasure in Juneau!) Exploring Creek Street in Ketchikan and touring Dolly’s Brothel is always a highlight as is taking in the wonderful, hip art at Coho Soho Art Gallery. I make time to walk the trails and neighborhoods and marvel at the precariously perched Cliffside homes accessed only by long,

narrow wooden stairs. I wonder what it would be like to live here and climb those steps every day. Haines, Alaska is another port that I always look forward to visiting and and I revel in its early history. I like to see how the old Army Barracks are coming along every year, as people are treasuring them and renovating them into the handsome buildings that they deserve to be. Ambling through the Alaskan Indian Arts building I watch skilled Tlingit

carvers slowly create wondrous totem poles out of raw wood. I explore small galleries where the owners are happy to see their customers and take the time to make you feel welcome. I sit in a pub and enjoy an Alaskan White, a glorious local brew. I catch a ferry to Skagway and walk the wooden planked town where the

gold rush began in 1897 and I think about how brave and daring those Klondikers must have been. I book passage on the White Pass narrow gauge railroad far into the wilds to Whitehorse, and feel joyous when I spot a black bear. Lighthearted is how Alaska makes me feel and that feeling always lasts a very long time.I’ll be going to Alaska again in May of 2014. Won’t you join me?email: [email protected] web: www.hellodirections.com

high school/college sports event with the big leagues. The Roger Dean Stadium Complex is the only stadium in the country to host four minor league teams and host two major league teams – that being our Cardinals and the Miami Marlins. Not to worry though, Cardinal red takes over this venue by far and St. Louisans can be proud to call Jupiter the winter home of “Cardinal Nation”! Right before the stadium debut in 1998, I was honored to take a tour of the construction site that would soon grace baseball fans from all over. I remember taking a bus out to a large sandy parcel of land with just a few trees here and there. I thought to myself, “what in the world are they thinking building this in no mans land”. But, this was truly a stadium being built with the mantra “if you build it… they will come” – and boy have they! Today, the stadium is surrounded with lush foliage and landscaping, parking facilities, restaurants, shops and a newly built hotel immediately across the drive from the stadium. In addition, Florida’s Atlantic University would grace the property next door within a few years after the stadium was completed. The new Alcoa neighborhood would rise with residential homes, apartments and condos making the stadium district active year-round.

Each year, for the last 13 years, DIRECTIONS Tours has enjoyed taking people to Jupiter to experience our Cardinals in training. Many people take the tour to enjoy easy access in/out of the stadium, fellow Cardinal fans and an all-inclusive tour package that allows relaxation and comfort throughout. Many travelers make spring training an annual event and vacation. We offer or Spring Taining package as a flight or motorcoach option depending on your time, budget and transportation preference. You can find out more information about our Cardinals Spring Training Tour on the next pages.

“Let’s Go Cardinals… Let’s Go!” is a familiar cry by the fans in St. Louis every year, and it follows the Red Birds south to their Spring Training home in Jupiter, Florida. The Cardinals are gearing up with many new names and faces on the roster, fans can get to know the new players and see their favorites returning. Spring Training allows fans not only to familiarize themselves with the new players; it is a fantastic opportunity to get up close and personal with them as well. Roger Dean Stadium is one of the best stadiums to have a personal contact and view of your favorite guys on the field. Any seat in the stadium gives fans the closest seats to the action than any Spring Training facility in Florida. If that is not close enough, enjoy taking in one of the six practice fields behind the stadium prior to a game! Players are

much more accommodating during spring training when it comes to signing autographs. Get there early and be prepared to stand on the sidelines during practice. Players usually enjoy chatting with fans and signing autographs just after practices prior to the actual game. Watch for familiar faces in the crowd too. Many Red Bird players enjoy watching the games on their days off the field. They, too, enjoy the games in the stands and are usually friendly to sign autographs or shake your hand.

To make the most of your up close and personal time with players remember these tips:

• Arrive Early for practices located behind the stadium.• Bring something you want signed. A jersey, hat, ball, photo, card or something to write on.• Have a Sharpie (or similar)

permanent black marker (the players will not have one)• Be respectful to your fellow fans and limit your time with a player and always let the kids go first!• Be respectful to the players, remember that they are working and may not always have time to sign autographs and chat.

...tables encourage folks to sit down and share both a meal and conversation. It’s very common to find area judges, attorneys, law students, business people and others gathered together. Smaller tables are available for those who would just like an intimate meal. There is also a take away counter for breakfast and lunch, and both a buffet and sit down menu are available for the midday meal. The dinner menu is quite nice and reflects a Mediterranean style. Dinner choices include “create your own pizzas,” Panini’s, sandwiches, lamb kabobs, shrimp and grits, braised local pork cheeks, appetizers, salads, and small plates. A great wine and beer selection tops off the meal and satiates the palate. Hurry to The Docket for a great meal served in a unique atmosphere before word gets out and seats are tough to come by! Recently I sat down with Jorge Rama, the General Manager of The Docket, day and was charmed by the affection of the staff and this extraordinary setting.

Anne: Anne Weibert, EditorJorge: Jorge Rama, General

Manager/The Docket

Anne: Thank you for meeting with me this morning, Jorge, and I’m going to start off by asking you to tell me a bit about The Docket.Jorge: The Docket is a partnership between St. Louis University and Bon Appétit. The idea behind the restaurant was to give the students, faculty, and staff here at the law school a place where they can rub elbows with folks from the civil court building. We get a lot of lawyers, judges and aldermen that come in and it’s a great place for the law students to network and hopefully make those connections so that they can land jobs in the future.

Anne: I was wondering who your patrons were and you’ve just answered that question for me. Do local business people frequent The Docket?Jorge: Quite a number of people from the AT&T building have discovered us as well as loft dwellers. We’re trying to build up our business and draw tourists over from the arch area. We’re a little off the beaten path and there are only a few restaurants near us, but we’re trying to reach out and grow. It’s working out so far, and our lunch business is really growing

Anne: It’s so cold outside today and yet, even though this is a fairly large space it feels

so comfortable in here. How many does the restaurant seat?Jorge: The restaurant seat 135 people.

Anne: That’s a huge space. I see that you offer what is called a “Chef’s Table.” What exactly does that mean?Jorge: The “Chef’s Table” is basically for guests who don’t have a lot of time for lunch. We feature local resources and Monday through Friday we offer something different every day. It’s $9.95 and all you can eat. You literally can walk in the door, sit down, eat and drink and be back to work within fifteen minutes.

Anne: I noticed that your marquis says “Farm to Fork.” Are you buying local products and cooking from scratch?Jorge: Bon Appétit was founded over 25 years ago on farm fresh principles and now this is such a growing trend. But Bon Appétit was using local farmers and resources from the very beginning. Many people don’t know about Bon Appétit, but Bon Appétit but they mostly can be found at educational institutions, like Harvard and Washington University here in St. Louis. Bon Appétit services the Panorama at the St. Louis Art Museum. They also partner with corporate accounts, like Google, Yahoo, Target, and the like.

Anne: What is your favorite dish at The Docket?Jorge: One of my favorite dishes is from the dinner menu. It sounds a little out of the ordinary, but it’s our pork cheeks. It’s pork that we buy from one of our local vendors, Wenneman Meats, and Chef sears the outside of the cheeks and then he braises it and serves it over a grit cake with local cheese and sautéed kale. We put a little red wine on top and serve it with pickles that we make in-house. It is delicious.

Anne: What are your customers saying about The Docket?Jorge: They always comment on how great the service is here. They also rave about our food and you have to know that when you order pastrami, for instance, we don’t just go out and buy pastrami, we buy a local brisket and Chef cures it for five days. He smokes and braises it and it’s like a chemistry project in the kitchen. But when you know what you’re doing, it’s such a simple thing and the outcome is superb. We even make our own sauerkraut and that process alone takes over three weeks. But, again, it’s worth it and it’s what we

want to present to our diners.

Anne: How long have you been in the restaurant business?Jorge: I’ve been in this business for fifteen years now, starting at the bottom and working my way up.

Anne: What is your greatest satisfaction at the end of the day?Jorge: I love hearing the positive feedback from our guests and I love being a part of all of the great things happening here. I love giving people a whole experience. Many of our wait staff and bartenders had never been in this industry but they had terrific personalities. We can teach people how to serve but we can’t teach personality. They are amazing people. It’s a lot of work for us, and we do a lot of training but it is really appreciated by our patrons. We hear that our servers are the best.

Anne: All of your guest’s reviews are so positive and the incredible service here is a reoccurring theme.Jorge: Our wait staff is genuine and they are not tainted with years and years of manipulating customers. I always tell them to be themselves because that’s why they were hired in the first place.

Anne: This is the kind of place that makes me want to tuck in for the afternoon and then you’ve got these wonderful employees who make you feel so comfortable and allow you to do just that.Jorge: If you look around you’ll notice that we have a lot of communal styles tables. And the idea behind that is to build connections where perfect strangers sit at a ten or twelve top table and by the end of the meal, new friendships are born. We also have smaller tables for those who prefer a more traditional experience.

Anne: Are you the one who decides on the menu? Gorge: Yes, I sit down with Chef and we work together to come up with new plates. Of course, this requires tasting and it’s hard on my waist line!

Anne: Besides Farm to Fork or Farm to Table, what’s the big trend that you’re seeing these days?Jorge: Sustainability is the big thing right now. Our focus at Bon Appétit in 2015 is that for every account that we have, and that’s over 500 accounts, we want to use only cage free eggs in our restaurants. Using cage free eggs make us feel better as humans. The chickens live a nicer life, they are less stressed, and there is a difference in the egg because of this. You get a much better product, and yes it costs us a bit more, but we feel it’s worth the extra cost. We also make a commitment to the local community to buy 20% of our food from small farmers and growers located within 150 miles. We really love our commitment to small operations and enjoy seeing them grow their businesses as well.

Anne: You told me that you were from Orlando originally. How do you like St. Louis?Jorge: I like the fact that this is a little big city. It’s just the right size and it’s turning into a huge foodie town. St. Louis is putting out some great food and it’s exciting to be a part of that. I love how this city encourages locally owned restaurants and how St. Louisans support that.

Cindy was concerned that her 97-year-old father, Paul was falling asleep in his chair every day, forgetting to eat. After an in-home assessment, it was decided that a Seniors Helping Seniors® caregiver would visit Paul at his home five days a week during mealtime to provide companionship and nourishment. For several months, Mary visited Paul at the same time each day, Monday through Friday. She would awaken Paul, who was asleep in his recliner. After visiting for a few minutes, Mary prepared his dinner. Paul would then come into the kitchen where they would sit

together, talk and share a meal. Paul ate everything Mary prepared for him including dessert every night. In their conversations, Mary learned that Paul was a bricklayer, was married for 66 years before his wife passed away, has five grown children and had been a decent golfer. Paul learned about Mary’s family and hobbies as they traded stories about their lives growing up in St. Louis—including such things as The Highlands and how they met their spouses at the local skating rink. The visits would often come to a close with Mary reading aloud a newspaper article followed by a brief discussion about it. Paul’s health has since declined and his family placed him in an assisted living community. That hasn’t stopped Mary from visiting Paul in her free time. They don’t see each other every day like before, but Mary makes a point of keeping in touch. It’s not about her doing her job at this point. It’s

about her wanting to spend time with a friend. Paul thanks her each time she comes and it is truly evident the bond they have formed. There’s something very special about a relationship that grows between one senior who is helping another senior. Paul, who had once slept through the hours of the day, had grown to look forward to his daily visits from Mary. By helping Paul, Mary found a friend that she had much in common and truly enjoys spending time with. Paul’s family was able to stop worrying about him as they knew he was being taken care of by someone who understands the aging process, could relate to his stories and memories and truly appreciated the opportunity to bring joy to Paul’s life. Seniors Helping Seniors® provides in-home non-medical care services to seniors by seniors. Services such as companionship, meal preparation, light

housekeeping, transportation to outings, doctor visits and errands, respite and Alzheimer’s care are all provided by experienced, compassionate seniors who want to help another senior. It’s like getting a little help from a friend. Although the senior caregivers are paid for their service, it is not the underlying reason they like the work. “It’s the smile I have on my face driving home from a caregiving job. The whole way home, I’m usually thinking about the joy I brought to someone’s life, no matter how small, and that makes me happy,” said Mary, who’s been caregiving since the loss of her husband.

Veterans Care Coordination recently moved to a new 16,000 square foot corporate headquarters at 300 Parkway Industrial Drive in St. Charles County. The move follows and aggressive year of growth for the company. Veterans Care Coordination educates veterans and their families about the pension with aid and attendance benefit through the Department of Veterans Affairs. VCC provides interest-free loans to veterans to begin home care, assists veterans in qualifying for the pension, and partners with home care agencies allow them to maintain their independence as long as possible. The company’s owner and president Kyle Laramie is passionate about helping senior veterans maintain their independence at home. After working in the field of occupational therapy, as well as various marketing, sales and management roles within the health care industry, he founded Veterans Care Coordination (VCC) in 2011. Under his leadership, VCC is one of

the fastest-growing senior care companies in the U.S. For more information, visit veteranscarecoordination.com.

Who is Eligible for Veterans Affairs Basic Pension and Aid

and Attendance? A pension is a benefit that the VA pays to wartime veterans who have limited or no income and who are at least 65 years old or, if under 65, are permanently or completely disabled. There are also “Death Pensions,” which are need based for a surviving spouse of a deceased wartime veteran who has not remarried.

What Are Aid andAttendance benefits?

Aid and Attendance is a benefit paid by Veterans Affairs to veterans, veteran spouses or surviving spouses. It is paid in addition to a veteran’s basic pension. The

benefit may not be paid without eligibility to a VA basic pension. Aid and Attendance is for applicants who need financial help for in–home care, to pay for an assisted living facility or a nursing home. It is a non–service connected disability benefit, meaning the disability does not have to be a result of service. You cannot receive non–service and service–connected compensation at the same time. Aid and Attendance benefits are paid to those applicants who:

-Are eligible for a VA pension-Meet service requirements

-Meet certain disability requirements

-Meet income and asset limitations

What are the Service Requirements for Aid and

Attendance? A veteran or the veteran’s surviving spouse may be eligible if the veteran:-Was discharged from a branch of the United States Armed Forces under conditions that were not dishonorable AND-Served at least one day (did not

have to be served in combat) during a wartime period (WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, or Persian Gulf War) and had 90 days of continuous military service.

What are the Disability Requirements for Aid and

Attendance?Veterans, spouses of veterans or surviving spouses can be eligible for Aid and Attendance benefits if they meet the following disability requirements:

-The aid of another person is needed in order to perform

personal functions required in everyday living, such as bathing, feeding, dressing, toileting, etc.

-The claimant is bedridden-The claimant is in a nursing

home due to mental or physical incapacity

-The claimant is blind, or very nearly blind

What are the Income Requirements for Aid and

Attendance? The claimant’s countable family income must be below a yearly limit set by law. Countable Income

means income received by the claimant and his or her dependents. It includes earnings, disability and retirement payments, interest and dividends, and net income from farming or business. A claimant must report all income, but the VA will exclude any income that the law allows. Public assistance, like SSI, is not counted as part of countable income. The annual income limits for the Aid and Attendance program are higher than those set for the basic pension. If you or a loved one is a U.S. veteran and meet the disability and service requirements listed above, it is advisable to contact a professional firm well-versed in VA benefits.

Now that another year is ending, it’s a good time to take stock of where you are on your journey toward financial security. Of course, you could find many different “measuring sticks” to assess your progress, but you can certainly gain considerable information just by asking yourself some basic questions. Here are a few to consider: • How close am I to my retirement goals? Your comprehensive investment strategy should include a reasonably good estimate of how much money you will eventually need to sustain the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned. At least once a year, you should evaluate how much closer you’ve gotten to your goals than the year before. • Am I making sufficient progress toward my goals? When assessing your progress, try to determine if your portfolio is properly allocated between stocks, stock-based vehicles, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit and other investments. If you’re “overweighted” in a

particular asset class, such as cash, you may be impeding your ability to move toward your goals. • Am I adhering to my investment strategy? To stick with your invest-ment strategy, you need to invest at regular intervals and meet regularly with your financial professional to review your progress and make adjustments — such as rebalancing your portfolio — when necessary. Of course, even with regular progress reviews and portfolio rebalancing, it can be challenging, psychologically and emo-tionally, to stick with a strategy. For example, during any given year the financial markets could be down, and your results might be disappointing. Nonetheless, if you have built a diversified portfolio containing quality investments, and your portfolio is well suited to your own risk tolerance and time horizon, you don’t necessarily need to make changes following a down year in the markets. • What aspects of my life have changed in the past year? Your investment strategy should be based entirely on your individual

needs and circumstances — so if these have changed during the past year, you may also have to adjust the way you invest. Consider any and all changes in your life — marriage, new children, divorce, remarriage, new job, new home, etc. — and then try to determine what impact these changes might have on your long-term financial strategy and if you need to adjust that strategy in response. • Have I changed my thinking on my retirement goals? Over time, you might undergo some changes in your thinking about retirement. For example, perhaps you’ve decided that you no longer want to retire early and travel the world; instead, you’ve discovered a growing desire to open a small business or do some

consulting. Any significant changes you make to your retirement plans will likely have a big effect on your savings and investment strategies, so you’ll want to incorporate these changes into your planning as soon as possible. By asking, and answering, these questions at the end of each year, you should always have a good sense of where you are in pursuit of your long-term goals — and what you need to do to bring the realization of those goals closer to reality.
