OVERTURE PUBLISHING
c o m p l e t e s to c k l i s tA L M A 2019
Dear Reader,
We are delighted to announce a wide and exciting range of new titles this season, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry and children’s books.
In May we will be releasing Pen in Hand, a new collection of literary essays about reading, writing and translation by one of Britain’s most loved authors, Tim Parks. Following the critical acclaim of its hardback edition, we will be launching Azareen Van der Vliet Oloomi’s Call Me Zebra in paperback, which will bring to a wider audience this promising writer, compared by many to authors such as Bolaño and Borges.
We are excited to welcome a new author to our children’s list: Sheila Kanani, a planetary physicist and science presenter. Her book, Space on Earth, is a fun and accessible guide to how space-age innovations have made their way into our everyday lives. Another highlight, following the success of her previous novel Six, is M.M. Vaughan’s new book, Slick, a middle-grade sci-fi novel about an unlikely friendship between two boys – one human, one android.
Meanwhile, our celebrated classics list is expanding apace. The Evergreens series will see the release of many more masterpieces of world literature, including Vanity Fair, David Copperfield and Moll Flanders. The rest of the programme presents a vast array of books for every taste, from lesser-known classics by Verne, Dickens and Picasso to new verse translations of Beowulf and The Song of Roland – and much, much more.
In the Calder list, we are proud to be reviving the experimental works of Alan Burns, a truly original British author active in the 1960s and 1970s, whose novels still seem as fresh and daring today and greatly deserve to be discovered by a new generation of readers.
We hope that there will be something for you in this new catalogue, and we thank you for your continued support.
With best wishes, The Publishers

READING, RE-READING AND OTHER MYSTERIES
Tim Parks
How can other people like the books we don’t like? What benefit can we get from rereading a work? Can we read better? If so, how? These and many other questions, ranging from the field of writing to that of reading and translation, are given a compre-hensive answer in a series of stimulating and challenging literary essays that will be a per-fect read for all book explorers and practi-tioners of the pen.
After delighting us with his novels and many volumes of non-fiction, Tim Parks – who is not only an acclaimed author and a transla-tor, but also a celebrated literary essayist – gives us a book to enjoy, savour and, most importantly, reread.
ABOUT THE AUTHORTim Parks is the author of fourteen novels, including Europa (shortlisted for the Booker prize), Destiny, Cleaver, Sex Is For-bidden and, most recently, Painting Death, all of which have been translated into many languages. As well as being a novelist and the author of several works of non-fiction, Tim is the acclaimed trans-lator of books by Italian writers. He’s a regular contributor to the New York Review of Books and the London Review of Books.

Azareen Van der Vl iet Oloomi
After the death of her father, an exiled Ira-nian man of letters, the bookish twenty-two-year-old Zebra finds herself alone in New York and decides to retrace the steps of her traumatic flight with her family from their homeland in the 1990s, hoping that in the process she will be inspired to write a ma-jor manifesto on literature. Her first stop is Barcelona, where she meets the Italian Ludo, who becomes her lover, intellectual sparring partner and travelling companion in her pic-aresque meanderings around Catalonia.
A natural-born raconteur, Zebra takes the reader on an irresistible journey through her thoughts, as she conceives elaborate theories about art and is increasingly convinced that her mother has been reincarnated as a cock-atoo. Sparkling with wit and mischief and brimming with imaginative vignettes and unconventional musings, Call Me Zebra is a riotous, erudite, unpredictable novel about literature, lust and dislocation.
ABOUT THE AUTHORAzareen Van der Vliet Oloomi is the winner of a 2015 Whit-ing Writers’ Award, a National Book Foundation “5 Under 35” honoree, and the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship, as well as residency fellowships from MacDowell and Ledig House. Her work has appeared in the Paris Review, Guernica, Granta, BOMB and elsewhere.
“A tragicomic picaresque whose fervid logic and
cerebral whimsy recall the work of Bolaño
and Borges.”

p roseccoTHE WINE AND THE PEOPLE
wHo made it a success
Luig i Bolzon
Following in the footsteps of other Italian gastronomic successes, Prosecco is the most recent “made in Italy” product to have colonized the world. But what is its history, and how did it come to be a global phenom-enon? Luigi Bolzon retraces the origins of Prosecco’s immense popularity back to the Italian emigrants who left their country in the second half of the nineteenth century and the experiences of those who were most instrumental in cementing Prosecco’s reputation.
Peppered with anecdotes and direct testimonies from the protagonists of Prosecco’s ascent in the world of wines, Bolzon’s book delves deep into the Italian soul to oer an insightful look behind the production and the continuing success of Britain’s most loved bubbly.
tHe cutt ing edgeTHE STORY OF THE BEATLES’ HAIRDRESSER WHO DEFINED AN ERA
les l ie cavendish
The Beatles’ hair changed the world. As their increas-ingly wild, untamed manes grew, to the horror of par-ents everywhere, they set o a cultural revolution as the most tangible symbol of the Sixties’ psychedelic dream of peace, love and playful rebellion. In the midst of this epochal change was Leslie Cavendish, hairdresser to the Beatles and some of the greatest stars of the music and entertainment industry.
But just how did a fifteen-year-old Jewish school drop-out from an undistinguished North London suburb, with no particular artistic talent or show business con-nections, end up literally at the cutting edge of Sixties’ fashion in just four years? His story – honest, always entertaining and inspiring – parallels the meteoric rise of the Beatles themselves, and is no less astounding.

The foundation of evo-lutionary biology, which prompted a revolution in the fields of science and religion comparable to Copernicus’s model of the universe and Newton’s law of gravity. Perhaps the most impor-tant book of scientific observation ever written.
Widely regarded as the first great American nov-el, The Last of the Mohi-cans, with its epic land-scapes, stoic frontiersmen and noble Native Ameri-cans, created much of the mythology and romance that has wreathed the American frontier adven-ture ever since.
Admired by Freud and Dostoevsky and cited by Dickens as the favourite among his own novels, this heavily autobio-graphical work marks the transition from his early picaresque novels to his more profound later works. A frequent subject of adaptations.
Presented as a working girl’s autobiography, the novel highlights the intri-cacies and double stand-ards of Moll’s contem-porary society, and oers an irresistible and evoca-tive insight into both the drawing rooms and seedy back alleys of seven-teenth-century England.
Woven into the cli-mactic events of the Napoleonic Wars, set against a backdrop of gaudy elegance, Van-ity Fair is a satirical portrait of English so-ciety that is considered one of the crowning achievements of Victo-rian literature.
Littered with double en-tendres, bawdy puns and scatological references, and full of decadence, drunkenness and de-bauchery, The Expedition of Humphry Clinker is a biting and sharply ob-served satire of the luxury and licentiousness of eighteenth-century society.
An extraordinarily well-observed dissec-tion of New York’s high society in the 1870s – the world Ed-ith Wharton grew up in – The Age of Inno-cence shines a critical light on the social mo-res and values of the old order.
Jude the Obscure, wide-ly considered to be one of the great works of the nineteenth century, attacks the inequalities and hypocrisies inher-ent within Victorian so-ciety’s attitudes towards marriage, social mobil-ity, education and the role of women.

While Charles Dickens is best known and cel-ebrated for his prolific journalistic output and novelistic creations, he also devoted some of his creative energies to verse.
At turns sentimental, melancholy, playful, hu-morous and satirical, and ranging considerably in tone and format – from songs to narrative prologues for novels and “squibs” for newspa-pers – the poems in this collection highlight Dickens’s gift for language and his unfailing power to touch.
A literary phenomenon in his lifetime, and re-nowned as much for his journalism and public speaking as for his novels, Charles Dickens (1812–70) now ranks as the most important Victorian writer and one of the most influential and popular authors in the English language.

THE SONG OF ROLANDThe Song of Roland is the earliest and finest example of the chanson de geste, a verse epic celebrating heroic deeds to be sung or recited by wandering minstrels. Presented here in a sparkling new translation by Anthony Mortimer along with the original Anglo-Norman French, this poetic masterpiece offers the modern reader both an engrossing narrative and a compelling insight into the medieval value system.

THE GHOST-SEERfr iedr ich schi l ler
The brooding, introverted Count von O— arrives in Venice during the carnival in order to escape from his duties and live incognito. But after encountering an enigmatic Armenian stranger who makes an uncanny pronouncement, a bizarre chain of events unfolds, in-volving a Jesuit secret society, a ghostly seance and a mysterious Sicilian magician – leading the Count to question his faith and morality.
First serialized in 1787–89, this multilayered, fragmen-tary novel – which gave Friedrich Schiller a platform to expound his Enlightenment ideas on society and religion – has thrilled and engaged lovers of Gothic literature for over two centuries.
THE TR IALFranz Kafka

Published the year after the author’s death, but writ-ten ten years earlier, The Trial is the most acclaimed of Kafka’s three novels, and is both a haunting meditation

c atastropHe AND OTHER STORIES
Dino Buzzat i
This volume brings together twenty of the best stories written by Dino Buzzati – author of the celebrated The Tartar Steppe.
From ‘The Collapse of the Baliverna’, where a man is racked with guilt at the thought that he might have been responsible for the loss of many lives, to ‘The Epidemic’, which describes the spread of a “state in-fluenza” contracted only by people who don’t step into line with the government, and ‘Terror at the Scala’, where the higher echelons of Milan society are gripped with the fear of an impending revolution – these sto-ries show how strange and unexpected events can creep into everyday life and draw ordinary people towards mystery, disquiet and, ultimately, catastrophe.

THE GOVERNMENT inspector
Nikola i Gogol
The mayor and local ocials of a small provincial town have got it made: corruption is rife and they have all the power. But when they learn that an undercover inspector is about to visit, they are forced to cover their tracks. Of-ten quoted as Russian literature’s greatest comedy, The Government Inspector is a trenchant satire of the cor-ruption, greed and stupidity of petty ocialdom, and the crowning achievement of Gogol’s skills as a playwright.

UTOPIAthomas more
This extraordinary treatise on the values of rationality and reason questions what a philosopher can do to enact change in society, and how idealized visions can inform political practice. A new translation by Roger Clarke of one of the most influential philosophical works of all time, which renders the original Latin into an English that is clear, readable and true to the spirit of Thomas More’s writing.

tHe secret life of objects around us
shei la kanani
Have you ever looked up into the sky and wondered about space, astronomy and the universe? Perhaps you have. But you’ve probably never looked around you – at the water you drink, the sunglasses you wear or the self-ies people take – and thought about space. The truth is, there is more of space on earth than you realize…
Full of amazing facts about everyday innovations in-spired by space travel and with sections on the people who brought them to us, Space on Earth is an enter-taining and fascinating look at space and its untold re-lationship with the planet we live on, helping children not only to feel the awe and wonder of the universe, but also to understand the reasons why space is relevant to us here on Earth.
sl ickm.m. vaughan
Eric Young is the first child android to be trialled in society, but he doesn’t know that. He does know that he’s just moved to Ashland from New York City, so it’s important that he makes new friends. He’s already growing his social media presence, but he knows it’s important to make friends in the real world too.
Danny Lazio doesn’t have any friends, but when Eric takes an interest in Land X, Danny’s favourite on-line game, Danny thinks he might have found a real
friend… if he can figure out the mystery behind Eric’s sudden disappearances and strange lifestyle. But uncovering the truth is an act that might cost them both, as powerful forces soon move in around them.
