ALOPHORA HEMIPTERA (FABRICIUS) AND TACHINA GROSS A (L.) (DIPTERA:TACHINIDAE) IN IRELAND

Apart from the records noted here, these species have not been collected in Ireland in recent years

despite increased activity by dipterists during the last three decades. Both are figured in C. N. Colyer and C. 0. Hammond (1951 Flies of the British Isles. Warne, London). Since both are large and of bizarre appearance they are unlikely to have escaped notice. Both insects are known from sites where notable rarities have been collected and which are relatively undisturbed and may therefore be considered indicator species. A. hemiptera has been reported from woodland and unimproved pasture: T. grossa from woodland and, usually, wet pasture. Both are commonly found feeding on umbellifers.

Material recently acquired by the Ulster Museum includes:

There are previous records of A. hemiptera from Cos Wexford, Waterford, Kerry, Dublin, Wicklow, Clare, Carlow and Down all prior to 1944. There are previous records of E. grossa from Cos Kerry, Waterford, Mayo, Wicklow, Galway, Louth, Kiidare, Clare, Antrim, Tipperary, Wexford, Dublin and Down the most recent being collected in 1960. Full data for all these records and specimens is held on the Diptera database at the Ulster Museum..
