HistoryAlpha Industries began in October, 1959

by completing existing Dobbs Industries’

subcontracts for Rolen Sportswear and

Dobbs’ government contracts for raincoats

and flight jackets. By December 1959, Alpha

obtained its first U.S. Defense Department

contracts to manufacture N-3B Air Force

parkas and a U.S. Navy shipboard shirts.

Although unknown to Alpha’s management

and most other Americans at that time, the

Iconic jacketsDuring the 1960’s, Alpha emerged as the dominant manufacturer of several

styles that subsequently became iconic pieces of American clothing fashion.

The most famous of these were nylon flight jackets like the MA-1 flight jacket,

and the M-51 and M-65 field jackets. The MA-1 and other nylon fight jackets

were issued to all U.S. Air Force and Naval Aviation pilots. The M-51 field

jacket and its 1965 replacement, the M-65 field jacket were issued to most

Army and Marine Corps personnel and to substantial numbers of Air Force

servicemen and servicewomen.

The most recognizable flight jacket in military aviation history. The MA-1, commonly

known as the bomber jacket was designed by the Air Force to serve as an

intermediate-weight jacket for use all year. The first MA-1 jackets were issued

around 1949 to United States Air Force, Navy pilots and flight crews. Manufactured

from high quality nylon fabrics and polyester interlinings. The light weight design

allowed the pilot in warm weather to wear the jacket open and be comfortable.

Upon entering the aircraft, the pilot could zip it closed and have protection against

the cold conditions encountered flying at high altitudes and cold temperatures.

Alpha Industries MA-1 flight jacket with “Blood Chit” sewn

on the lining. “Blood Chits” were a type of flag issued to U.S.

Air Crews to aid their survival if they were shot down over

enemy territory. The Blood Chit contained a message in several

languages identifying the airman as U.S. aviator and requesting

help in avoiding capture and being returned safely to U.S.

forces. A reward was offered for such assistance.

In 1945, the U.S. Army Air Force issued the Jacket-

Aircrew-Heavy-Type N-3, the first of a long line of very

successful N-3 style parkas. The N-3 evolved into the

N-3B by 1958, described as “for aircrew members

in extremely cold environments.” This Snorkel Parka

features reinforced elbow patches, a full-length storm

flap and inset knit cuffs for durability and protection

against the elements. The nylon outer shell/polyester

interlining ensures that no cold air seeps in. The hood

is lined and trimmed with synthetic fur, complete with

adjustable draw-cord strap.

Introduced into U.S. military service in 1965, the

M-65 field jacket was issued to soldiers during

the Vietnam war. It became useful for troops

serving in the central highlands of South Vietnam,

as well as keeping a soldier warm from the cool

weather conditions that came after monsoonal

rains. The M-65 jacket’s bi-swing back ensures

unrestrained movement.

The U.S. Army M-65 Fishtail Parka, also known as M-1965 Parka is

an extreme cold weather parka that has become a long-time favorite

among the U.S. Army’s cold weather troops. It provides exceptional

chill-chasing WARMTH. Fishtail nickname comes from the tail-

cinching drawstrings around each leg which can be snugged tight to

keep the cold out. The M-1965 fishtail parka was developed in 1965

and the M simply stands for Military.

The pea coat was first worn in the 18th century by sailors

of American and European navies. Originally, the coats

were made of a heavy twill cloth called pilot cloth or

P-cloth. The garments made from this material were called

P-jackets, which later became P-coats. This heavy coarse

fabric protected sailors in bad weather. Structurally, a

pea coat is recognizable by its wide lapels, large buttons

and vertical pockets. Pea coats are double breasted and

traditionally fall at the mid-thigh. The original pea coat was

so heavy that it featured a metal chain at the neckline,

which was used to hang it.
