In the I session of the seminar Dr. Moly Kuruvilla (Director, Centre for Women

studies,University of Calicut) delivered a lecture on Changing Role of Women and Sustainable

Development. In order to change the deep rooted perceptions regarding gender roles and life goals of

women, effective interventions in the socialization process of boys and girls in favour of women’s

emancipation is required. This in turn calls for eliminating all the blackspots in our cultural tradition,

especially in matters related to womanhood. The present social /cultural construct of men and women

need to be deconstructed and reconstructed. The feminine values of love, compassion, selflessness,

nurturing and protecting present in every human being need to be revitalised so as to end up corruption

and violence. A life of peaceful coexistence is to be aimed at instead of the present destructive

competition and conflicts. The educated, politically conscious women of the present must take lead in

cutting a path forward for the next generation of thinkers, doers and leaders in communities around the

world. The women’s colleges of Kerala have to take up such a responsibility as their vision and mission

and make a difference. Being an Alphonsian she says she is confident that she has committed to this

responsibility and she inspired all to join hands and move ahead with purposeful strides. The session

was concluded with question answer round wherein the audience asked their queries to the speaker.
