Filming the videos

• Filming the video learning objects– Professional filming by University based

company CITYsj Productions – Use semantics of the medium to highlight

teaching points more effectively– Voiceovers were provided by academic staff– Videos were professionally edited by CITYsj

productions

Videos for the web

• Requirement for videos to be available within the VLE– Flash video or FLV.– Very common format for web based videos, (used by

many news websites such as YouTube, Google Video etc).

– Cross platform and browser compatible.– Easy to convert from other file formats. – Requires some knowledge of HTML to configure a

player to display the video files. (we used the FREE JW FLV MEDIA PLAYER 4.3).

Videos for mobile devices

• Requirement for video to be available on mobile devices (Symbian and Windows)

• Standard format for videos on mobiles is .3GP– Allows them to be viewed on all types of

capable mobile devices– Allows them to be ‘bluetoothed’ between

devices

Work of the Learning Technologists

• Insert captions on videos– Accessibility for disabled users– Clarity for able bodied users

• Convert uncompressed media to FLV format and embed content

• Convert videos to 3GP format for mobile devices (Super© video converter)

• Develop website to share the resources

ALPS CETL: www.alps-cetl.ac.uk | York St John University: www.yorksj.ac.uk

Video Objects Website• Allows all videos (FLV & 3GP) to be downloaded (reusable)• Enables us to demonstrate and share the files between the ALPS

partner universities• www.yorksj.ac.uk/learnteach/alps/learning_objects

Recommendations

• Where possible, have footage professionally recorded and edited

• Include captions for accessibility• Include voiceovers for accessibility • Include transcripts for voiceovers, again to meet

accessibility guidelines• Use FLV as the format for web-based video• Use 3GP as the standard for mobile video• Split video sequences up into re-usable ‘chunks’
