Edelzwicker Special Cuvée, Joseph Cattin 2017

Elegant and refreshing ‘noble blend’, in this case the classic Alsace grapes: muscat, riesling, pinot gris and gewurztraminer. A bright, fruity, no-excuse-needed aromatic dry white. 12.5% ref AS-AL14051 s £8.50 bottle | £102 dozen

The Society’s Vin d’Alsace 2017

We’ve worked with the historic house of Hugel for decades and they get this much-loved blend of traditional grapes just right: dry but a little fuller-bodied and less aromatic than the Cattin wine. 12.5% ref AS-AL14171 £9.50 bottle | £114 dozen

Sylvaner Vieilles Vignes,Dirler-Cadé 2017

Always one of our favourite examples of the grape, this is clean-cut and dry with a hint of pepper, and clean, palate-cleansing finish. Drink now to 2027. 13%ref AS-AL15061 no £14.95 bottle | £179 dozen

NEW Chardonnay Vin de France, Dopff au Moulin 2017

An elegant, classically styled chardonnay grown above the charming medieval town of Riquewihr. Its part-barrel fermentation and oak ageing imparts a little spice and creaminess to the breadth and broad texture on the palate. Drink now to 2022. 13% ref AS-AL15251 £18.50 bottle | £222 dozen

WHITE WINES Alsace blends, Chardonnay & Sylvaner

WHITE WINES Muscat

Great with creamy onion tarts, noodles and smoky bacon.

From accessible, easy-drinking blends of the region’s indigenous grapes to subtle and serious sylvaner, and a rare, still chardonnay, these make aperitifs that hit the spot, but add a heady note to savoury courses too.

Aromatic and grapy on the nose, dry on the palate and delicious with asparagus.

Muscat represents only a tiny proportion of Alsace production, is hard to make, yet can produce some of the world’s most exquisite wines. Lay some down for next year’s English asparagus season and meanwhile, relish it with delicately flavoured Thai dishes.

Muscat Réserve, Trimbach 2017

This benchmark muscat makes the most elegant of aperitifs – which is often how it’s served in Alsace. Drink now to 2022. 12.5% ref AS-AL14111 s £14.95 bottle | £179 dozen

Muscat Grand Cru Saering, Dirler-Cadé 2017

Wonderful example of grand cru muscat balancing an intense, heady grapiness with notes of fresh citrus and jasmine, rich texture and pure, racy acidity. Fearless in the face of tomatoes, it also absorbs fragrant herbs such as basil. Drink now to 2024. 13% ref AS-AL15071 no £23 bottle | £276 dozen

NEW Gewurztraminer Wahlenbourg, Domaine Paul Ginglinger 2017

A more delicate gewurz from an old parcel of vines and a vineyard which takes its name from the oldest of the three medieval castles of Eguisheim. Limestone soils here bring citrus and yellow-fruit freshness to the wine, with hints of ginger, cinnamon and rose petal. Drink now to 2022. 13% ref AS-AL14991 £14.50 bottle | £174 dozen

Gewurztraminer, Léon Beyer 2017

Unashamedly dry, spicy gewurz from Marc Beyer, made to drink with food, ripe, full-bodied and long. Drink now to 2023. 14% ref AS-AL15081 n £16 bottle | £192 dozen

NEW Gewurztraminer Réserve Bergheim, Cave de Ribeauvillé 2017

The award-winning Ribeauvillé co-op’s Bergheim ‘village’ wine, from just below the grand cru vineyards. Textured and creamy with hints of clove and pepper. Drink now to 2023. 13.5% ref AS-AL15171 £17.50 bottle | £210 dozen

NEW Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Eichberg, Domaine Ginglinger 2017

From a cooler-sited plot of old vines, this silky-rich wine is already delicious but will benefit from more time in bottle to show its true worth. Try it with a powerful cheese like Munster or Epoisses. Drink now to 2025. 13% ref AS-AL14941 £19.50 bottle | £234 dozen

WHITE WINES GewurztraminerTry with tagines, baked squashes, strong soft cheeses and even tomatoes.

Full-bodied and either fragrant or spicy (gewürz means spice in German), or both, Alsace gewurztraminer is often copied but never matched. In 2017 its natural richness is tempered by a lovely freshness. The most popular food pairing, at least outside Alsace, is curry or other suitably exotic fare, but it’s much more versatile than that.

NEW Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Zotzenberg, Boeckel 2017

This lesser-known grand cru is in the pretty village of Mittelbergheim in northern Alsace. We fell for this gewurz’s delicate rose-petal and spice aroma, restraint and elegance, with fresh lift on the finish. Drink now to 2025. 13.5% ref AS-AL15141 o £19.50 bottle | £234 dozen

NEW Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Kessler, Domaines Schlumberger 2017

From Schlumberger’s impressive grand cru holdings, this is an intense and heady, spicy gewurz with fresh long palate. Drink now to 2027. 13% ref AS-AL15201 £20 bottle | £240 dozen

NEW Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Spiegel, Domaine Dirler-Cadé 2017

Charmingly perfumed, silky and seductive with richness and concentration. A beautifully balanced young wine to serve with strong soft or washed-rind cheese. Drink now to 2027. 13% ref AS-AL15181 o £26 bottle | £312 dozen

Gewurztraminer Réserve, Domaine Albert Boxler 2017

From the fine Heimbourg vineyard, this is a beautiful young wine, with intense lychee and spice aromas and long, fresh finish. Drink now to 2023. 13.5% ref AS-AL14741 n £26 bottle | £312 dozen

NEW Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Brand, Dopff au Moulin 2017

Richness and tension combine in style in this aromatic gewurz from the Brand vineyard near Turckheim. Lemon and lime notes mingle with lychee, clove and spice, all enveloped in a silky texture. Drink now to 2027. 14% ref AS-AL14921 £28 bottle | £336 dozen

NEW Gewurztraminer ‘Comtes d’Eguisheim’ Grand Cru Pfersigberg, Léon Beyer 2017

Dry despite the richness of the vintage, this is powerful, textured, concentrated and complex. Still very young, this is an impressive wine which will merit keeping. Drink now to 2030. 14.5% ref AS-AL14901 £36 bottle | £432 dozen

Riesling Grand Cru Pfersigberg ‘Hertacker’, Domaine Paul Ginglinger 2017

Hertacker is the less sunny of the two parcels farmed on the Pfersigberg vineyard, but 2017’s low yields have made for a riper wine, already showing some breadth of flavour and development, and fine linear precision on the palate. Drink now to 2027. 13% ref AS-AL15031 n £19.50 bottle | £234 dozen

Riesling Grand Cru Saering, Domaines Schlumberger 2017

From multi-tasking house whites tothe ultimate glass for game.

Pinot blanc and auxerrois are often blended together, for the freshness and cut of the pinot blanc and the extra creaminess and sometimes hint of smokiness from the auxerrois. They make classy all-purpose whites to uncork at any time. Pinot gris, always somewhat under the radar, even among fine wine aficionados, will surely win more hearts in this vintage and comes into its own with luxurious festive foods.

Topping and tailing the menu.

Sparkling production is on the up in Alsace and deservedly so. Climate change means the late-harvested sweeter wines are easier to make on a more regular basis, and these are a joy with puddings.

Silky, digestible reds for fish, game, seasonal roots and wild mushrooms.

A touch of red velvet in a swathe of white silk! Alsace might be famed for its white wines but these have a lovely balance between ripe fruit and acidity that make them a smart choice for the dinner table.
