The ladies of Sheering WI and residents of Ean Cottage assembled on the last Saturday of the Queens Jubilee year but for one member it was a touch of déjà vu.

WI ex-President, Mrs Berenice Spicer, as Nightingale Girl Guide Patrol leader had had the honour of planting

a Double Red Hawthorn tree to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of King George V in 1935. This had recently died and been removed and now she was back to replace it with one of the same variety that treasurer Mrs Irene Harriss had managed to source. and Mrs Spicer was able to put her best royal spade forward!

At the WI meeting in March there were more celebrations when Mrs Spicer celebrated her 90th birthday with a beautiful cake made by member Sheena Pike and the gift of WI book Jambusters: The Story of the Women's Institute in the Second World War.

Earlier in the week she had enjoyed a party in the Village Hall with friends and family from far and wide.

2012 Poppy Appeal

I wish to offer my sincere thanks to all those who

contributed towards the 2012 Poppy Appeal

throughout the village. I am most grateful to the

main static collection points located at Sheering

Stores & Post Office, Fullers Butchers, Ellie's

Brunch, Sheering School, The Cock and Crown

Public houses and St. Mary's church.

Additional contributions were also made by wreath

donations and I thank Sheering Parish Council, St.

Mary's church and the Hambro family.

There was a large congregation at both the Service

of Remembrance held in St. Mary's church and the

short service of dedication and wreath laying at the

village War Memorial which followed it. I am

indebted to Rev'd Stuart Gibbs, the Trumpeters

and Standard Bearers of Hatfield Heath Royal

British Legion and officers of Ongar police who

halted the traffic along The Street while the

ceremony took place. The significant contribution

made by you all that day was greatly appreciated

as we remembered all those from our village and

our country who have given, and continue to give

their lives in war.

Back LaneBack LaneBack LaneBack Lane

By the time of printing and distribution of Sheering News we may well have had a road closure of Back Lane in the week commencing 25 March.

From a letter to the Parish Clerk:

The work being undertaken is jetting works to the existing highway drainage system, ascertaining how the highway drainage system links with the road side ditches and carrying out repairs to defective areas of the highway.

In ‘layman’s terms’, the purpose of the jetting is to clear debris or blockages to any underground pipes to which any carriageway gullies link to. As part of this procedure, we should be able to ‘work out’ where this pipe system drains into the ditches and consequently where we need to ensure the ditches are kept clear and we will endeavour to make appropriate contacts with the land owners to move this forward.

We will then carry out repairs to the road where we believe any defects are causing a hazard. There is also the ‘pass-by’ where we intend to place some planings to make it more suitable for purpose. There is also the ‘double bend’ where the level of the road has dropped where we not only need to take some remedial action to the defect (the dropping of the road level), but give consideration to how we may prevent further issues by providing some form of ‘edge restraint’ although the proximity of the ditch means we will need to give

this matter some considered thought.

Additionally, we discussed the areas outside residential properties where the verge has been damaged by parking and I will be liaising with our Highways Locality Panel to ascertain whether there is a suitable source of funding for us to create a more suitable parking area, although this particular aspect will not form part of our ‘maintenance’ work.

LETTER FROM ROBERT HALFON MP

One of the biggest problems that we face in

Harlow and the villages is unemployment. There

has been some good news, I accept, in that our

local dole-queues have fallen by about 6.5 per

cent in the last year. Across the country also,

500,000 people have found jobs, which is the

fastest rate of job creation since 1989. Our

economy is slowly healing. But it shouldn't

distract us from the fact that many families are

still struggling, and we need to do much more

to help them with the cost of living.

To try and help with this, last year I organised a

Jobs Fair at the Harlow Leizure Zone. This was

backed by the Job Centre and Seetec. 86

companies came offering jobs. 2,000 job-

seekers walked through our doors. In 2013, my

goal is to repeat that again, and to hold another

bigger and better Jobs Fair as a free service for

local residents. For example, when a big local

employer like Stansted Airport has 200

vacancies, we need to advertise that much

better to people looking for work.

Next, we have to radically boost skills,

especially for young people. After a long

campaign, I am now delighted to say that we

will be getting a new University Technical

College built and opened in the Harlow

constituency for 2014. This will be one of only a

few UTCs around the country, and it will have

hundreds of places for local students from ages

14 to 19. The UTC will be focused on high-tech

vocational education, and will be a conveyor

belt for local youngsters into skilled

apprenticeships. We had to really battle to

secure this: now we need to do the vital work,

to make sure that it opens its doors for the first

time next year. We're lucky that Harlow College

and their Principal Colin Hindmarch have been

at the centre of this. Harlow College are

officially the number one in the whole country.

It is partly thanks to their work, that

apprenticeships are now rocketing to record

highs in Harlow, with a 78 per cent rise so far.

As you may know, I have continued the

campaign in Parliament for lower fuel duty, and

cheaper petrol and diesel at the pumps.

Thousands of people from Sheering, Matching,

Hastingwood, Roydon, Nazeing, and Harlow

have written to me about this, and - thanks to

their strong support - so far, the Government

have listened, and scrapped every fuel duty rise

that had been planned. I am hopeful that the

Government will listen again this year. To

support the campaign please sign the petition at

www.PetrolPromise.com

Surgeries, please write to me at

TWO BIG QUESTIONSTWO BIG QUESTIONSTWO BIG QUESTIONSTWO BIG QUESTIONS

Question 1: Will there be a new Question 1: Will there be a new Question 1: Will there be a new Question 1: Will there be a new M11 junction?M11 junction?M11 junction?M11 junction?

For years there has been talk about a possible new junction on the M11 between junctions

7 and 8. The argument for junction 7A has been to provide for future economic and housing growth in Harlow and also to reduce the impact of any incident at or near junction 7, which can be quite severe as it currently constitutes Harlow's only access on to the strategic route network. Now such a scheme has come a possible stage nearer with the completion of a £500,000 feasibility study by Essex County Council which proposes a link between a new junction and the B183 Gilden Way into Harlow.

I reported on this proposal to a meeting of the Council in February as highways are a part of my Cabinet responsibilities. Of course, this issue is very important for the people I represent on the Council, because if a new junction were to be created, it would be bound to have an impact on Lower Sheering. Exactly what that impact would be is far from certain at this stage. Essex County Council officers with whom I've spoken claim that their computer modelling has shown traffic in Lower Sheering would decline, as a proportion of vehicles - for example, those travelling between Harlow and Bishop's Stortford, and seeking to avoid Sawbridgeworth - would be drawn on to the motorway. They also say that they're working on possible restricted junctions which would prevent traffic turning off the link road and heading for Sheering Lower Road. At present, this is all conjecture, and in any event the Highways Agency has yet to indicate whether it's prepared to support a scheme.

What this means is that I shall be watching the situation extremely carefully and asking questions at every stage, so that the interests of local people are kept to the forefront. Public consultation will take place in the summer. Meanwhile, I'd be glad if constituents would let me know their views so that I can feed them into the continuing debate.

Question 2: Will there be new homes built at Question 2: Will there be new homes built at Question 2: Will there be new homes built at Question 2: Will there be new homes built at Lower Sheering?Lower Sheering?Lower Sheering?Lower Sheering?

By now most people in Lower Sheering will be aware that Epping Forest District Council's Issues and Options document, issued last year, included a proposal to construct perhaps up to 600 houses off Sheering Lower Road. This idea didn't come from the Council itself but was submitted by a developer, and the Council was

obliged to include it among the options. Since the consultation period ended in October, the Council has been doing a great deal of work on its Local Plan, which sets out the district's housing requirements over the next 20 years, and it has held a number of workshops which I attended, together with members of Sheering Parish Council.

At every opportunity I've stressed that Lower Sheering is totally unsuited as an area of housing expansion in the Green Belt, with its inadequate roads, proximity to a level crossing which continually acts as a barrier to traffic, its lack of local infrastructure such as schools and medical facilities and the fact that planning permission has recently been granted for 1100 houses at Gilden Way, Harlow - only a mile away.

At present the Council is working with consultants to assess just how many additional homes it must allow for in preparing its Local Plan. Then, later this year it will publish its Preferred Options, which will set out the numbers and the location of these houses to be built over the following two decades. And the next stage will be to submit the completed Local Plan to examination by an Inspector who has the power to reject it if it is found to be 'unsound' - in other words, if the evidence base it has used is considered unsatisfactory. If that were to happen, the Council could lose much control over applications for new developments, and it would be a damaging and costly outcome for council tax payers. That's why it's taking so much care to get the process absolutely right.

These decisions are among the most important that Lower Sheering has faced in many years, and for that reason they're an absolute priority for me - to which I'm devoting my full attention. I'm grateful for the support I've received from many residents.

You are hereby invited to attend the Sheering Village and Lower Sheering Annual Parish Meeting, which will be held in the Village hall on Wednesday 24 April, starting at 7.30.

Come along to meet your local Councillors, and hear what we have done over the past year and our plans for the next 12 months.

All our Councillors are volunteers, who have the responsibility for making the lives of our local communities more comfortable within three main categories: representing the whole electorate within the Parish; delivering services to meet local needs; and striving to improve quality of life within the Parish. Our aim is always to make both Sheering and Lower Sheering a better place for all, and we do this within our limited budget and powers.

We have invited representatives from all our various local Organisations to join us on the 24th to answer any questions and provide information:

We would welcome more input from you, the residents, in the form of fresh ideas and/or assistance.

For example, we are looking for parents willing to help form a junior football and possibly a junior cricket team. We have the playing facilities and, if we

can find the funds to finish it, an all-weather 5-a-side area. We have also had the offer of a qualified referee/coach to help with summer time training.

Activities which encourage our children away from the isolation of television and computers, etc. into healthy team activities outdoors, where they are also interacting socially, has got to be good for their development.

The West Essex and East Herts Guild of Spinners, Weavers and Dyers was formed in 1980 to further our knowledge of these crafts and to share our skills with others. It is one of many such

Guilds throughout the UK which form a National Association www.wsd.org.uk

The Guild meets once a month at Harlow Museum (unless otherwise stated) with guest speakers and workshops, which include a variety of allied crafts such as felt making, braid making, knitting and basketry. Members also display and demonstrate at various craft events and fairs. We look forward to welcoming new members whether a beginner or with many years experience. There are various items of spinning and weaving equipment which may be hired by members. Annual membership is £20.

Unfortunately I start with the sad death of two of our members

Bob MacDonald who died in November, had only been with us for a few years but was always there with a laugh and Desireé Clanford who died in

February, both her and Frank had been great members and supporters of the club for many years. Both will be sadly missed.

We played our last league game at the end of February. We did win the league but are pulling out due to lack of members willing to play. We still have one team in the second round of Triples competition due to be played in April.

As everywhere was so wet and muddy and the weather awful, we decided to walk up to Matching Tye along the road via Church Lane. Possibly the only advantage of vehicles not being able to use the bridge was we had no trouble with traffic! We waited for a short while for the Fox Pub to open and had some welcome refreshment before setting off on the return journey using the same route. The Easter walk will be on Good Friday 29 March meeting in the Village Hall Car Park at 10.30. Lee Tennant

Having had the ceilings suspended and looking so much more attractive we are now trying for a grant from Stansted Airport to help with modernising the washrooms and then we will probably be ready to start looking at redecorating again. As you can imagine all these things take money which is mainly raised through bookings and fundraising. We are lucky to have a Village Hall so EVERYONE’S support really is needed for fund raising events. Beryl Gurteen Chair Village Hall Management Committee

Since the last Sheering News we have had a really busy time: We had our sponsored silence to raise money for the older children to visit Sealife World in Southend (Pre-school fund the coach and entrance) we use this opportunity to make the children aware of Remembrance Sunday and they prepare large poppy pictures that are given to soldiers we know to take back to their barracks. I am told the soldiers really appreciate it.

Father Christmas came and collected our

letters then came back for our party and gave all the children a present.

The staff performed their usual end of term pantomime/story for the children, which everyone really enjoys. Forty four children sit still and are mesmerised for about 20 minutes and the staff are all becoming quite accomplished

actresses! We had our coffee morning and the children performed the Nativity as well as singing some songs for their parents/carers/grand parents (and whoever else had come to see them). The coffee morning and raffle raised funds for our equipment and other activities for example Mothering Sunday presents. The Pancake race took place inside because of the inclement weather and we had 3 heats of 3 runners, the final consisted of winners from the 3 heats and the overall winner was Kevin Muldoon. All the runners received prizes of

This is always very well received by the children and usually results in parents also getting to learn a LOT about the culture of the Aborigine people as well as the animals and landscape!! We celebrate Australia Day with a beach party complete with BBQ and puppet show. After Easter the children will be involved in activities associated with Gt. Britain.

And last but not least, the biggest event (probably), was our Ofsted inspection. This resulted in us getting a ‘Good’ with one item stopping us from being ‘Outstanding’. The Ofsted can be accessed by going on-line to www.gov.uk and following the links for reports on Pre-schools. If you type in Sheering Village Pre-school you should be able to see it. If you would like a copy you could call into the Village Hall between 9.30 and 10.30 Monday to Friday and we will give one.

We have decided at the Pre-school to reintroduce Mother and Tots. This group will be held every 3rd Thursday in the month and then depending on popularity possibly 1st as well. Someone from Surestart plans to attend to help with any information related to funding or other type of sessions available. So far we have had 2 sessions both of which were reasonably well attended. The dates for the rest of the year will be: 18 April, 16 May, 20

• trees/bushes overshadowing the front door leading to a fear of crime

• a garden that has deteriorated to the state that it leads people to believe the property is unoccupied

• an overgrown garden that impedes access by social care, health or other support workers

Please note that the Scheme does not cover routine garden maintenance.

DISTURBED DISTURBED DISTURBED DISTURBED BY NIGHT BY NIGHT BY NIGHT BY NIGHT FLIGHTS? FLIGHTS? FLIGHTS? FLIGHTS?

The worst impactThe worst impactThe worst impactThe worst impact

Night noise is the worst adverse environmental impact of Stansted Airport. The Government will be issuing new Night Flying Restrictions which are due to start in October 2014, but is consulting us beforehand. So we now have the opportunity of making our concerns known and the deadline for this is 22 April 2013.22 April 2013.22 April 2013.22 April 2013.

How limits are setHow limits are setHow limits are setHow limits are set

Night flights are regulated by the Government which sets annual limits on the number of flight movements and a formula known as a ‘quota count’ based on the noisiness of each plane.

Our main concernsOur main concernsOur main concernsOur main concerns

We have three main concerns.

FirstFirstFirstFirst, 12,000 night flights are currently allowed each year, but only about two thirds of them are used. In other words, the present limits are set so high that Stansted airport and the airlines that use it can have all the night flights they need. Each year the quota count limit is reduced by 5%, but the limit is so generous that this has no practical effect.

SecondSecondSecondSecond, night is defined as the period between 11.30pm and 6.00am. This means that there are no rules governing the ‘shoulder’ periods between 11.00pm to 11.30 pm and between 6.00am and 7.00am, the very times when most people are trying to get to sleep or before they wake up.

ThirdThirdThirdThird, aircraft are presently allowed to use reverse thrust when landing at night, which is extremely noisy.

What yWhat yWhat yWhat you ou ou ou can docan docan docan do

To make your views count you should write to the Department for Transport setting out your concerns before the closing date of 22 April. You should say how night noise affects you and your family. It does not have to be a long letter, but you should call for the following:

The annual quota count should be sharply reduced so that it begins to have some practical effect.

‘Night’ should mean night, that is from 11.00pm to 7.00am.

There should be a commitment to the

Rotary Club of Harlow Tye Rotary Club of Harlow Tye Rotary Club of Harlow Tye Rotary Club of Harlow Tye presents pounds for Hounds!presents pounds for Hounds!presents pounds for Hounds!presents pounds for Hounds!

Harlow Tye Rotary Group were honoured to experience the moving ‘tail’ behind the charity Hounds for Heroes, when Founder Allen Parton and Trustee John Wheeley – and EJ of course - came to talk to them last Tuesday.

Allen told the inspiring story of how a tragic wartime head injury left him unable to remember his wife or children and how a trusty Labrador named Endal saved his marriage and his life. Having experienced first hand how life changing an assistance dog could be, Allen started Hounds for Heroes to provide assistance dogs to support other injured and disabled men & women of the UK Armed Forces & Emergency Services; and is proving very successful in his mission as they will be matching some of their first squadron doggie cadets to their human partners later this year.

Harlow Tye Rotary Club are thrilled to be able to support this deserving charity, and took the opportunity to present Hounds for Heroes with a cheque for £1100. Of this total, an impressive £900 was raised by the wives, partners and families of

Rotarians at the annual Famous Charity Abseil at Harlow Affinity Water Tower, from the sale of their baked goods. Many thanks go to those who not only spent all weekend selling but had also spent days baking!

Mary Bunyard presented the cheque on behalf of those kitchen dwellers to Hounds For Heroes with admiration and a pat on the head – to EJ of course!

Police have warned the public to be on their guard against a bogus police officer who attempts to use the non-emergency number 101 to steal bank details.

The man is known to call people at random and tell them their bank details have been found in possession of arrested suspects. In an attempt to verify that he was a genuine officer he gave the name of Sgt James Hackett (no such officer exists) and invited his intended victim to call him back urgently, within five minutes, on the police 101 number.

One victim did call him back to find out more but became suspicious because there was no ring tone and no extension number was given. He hung up immediately. Another victim was tricked into giving details. Tony Ellis, the crime reduction officer for Epping Forest District, said: “We are aware of two cases where this trickster tried to obtain his victim’s bank details. In one he succeeded. These calls can immediately be identified as fraudulent because we would never ask for bank details over the telephone. This man might use many other aliases and try different stories but the single rule that will prevent you from becoming the victim of this type of con is very simple….under no circumstances whatsoever under no circumstances whatsoever under no circumstances whatsoever under no circumstances whatsoever must you give your banking details to must you give your banking details to must you give your banking details to must you give your banking details to anyone asking for them particularly over the anyone asking for them particularly over the anyone asking for them particularly over the anyone asking for them particularly over the telephone.telephone.telephone.telephone. If you receive a call of this nature please note what the caller says. If you suspect the caller in any way, discontinue the conversation and call me on 101 extension 319383.”

We are planning to start selling a range of home-made crafts from the gardens this season to help raise funds for our various projects. We have put together some simple kits that we would like people to sew, knit or crochet for us – we will provide all the materials we just need your expertise and energy.

If your skills are a bit rusty or you’re a beginner, don’t worry – we’ll also be having regular crafting get-togethers where there will be a chance to chat, share skills and do quality control on potential cakes for the gardens!

If this sounds like the kind of thing you would like to get involved with then please contact the Trust Administrator, Helen Carter on [email protected] or leave a message on 01371 876979 and she will get back to you.

Pete’s RamblingsPete’s RamblingsPete’s RamblingsPete’s Ramblings

School bully, playing truant, another new school, hand knitted football socks, Doodlebugs and Rockets. That’s where I left my previous ramblings. An evacuee now returning home because Hitler had decided the R.A.F. was proving to be tougher than he expected.

Goodness me how my local streets had changed, where once there were rows of neat terraced houses, there were now empty spaces, piles of rubble and many broken and abandoned buildings.

My old School ‘Wade Street’ had been destroyed, thankfully without any loss of life, due entirely to the ‘evacuation’ of all the children. This meant another new school the ‘Holy Infants’ run by nuns, ‘Sisters of Charity’ who wore beautiful blue robes with amazing head gear called wimples. These were made from starched linen and made to stand up in the form of swans’ wings. Very imposing, all the children loved them and apart from teaching they were also very active in supporting the whole community in these sad and dangerous times. (Similar to the nuns now seen on T.V. in ‘midwives’)

As a young child I didn’t fully realise the danger and sadness that was reality, and treated the derelict and bombed out buildings as wonderful playgrounds, football in the road with an old leather football case stuffed with newspapers, scooters made from bits of wood and steel ball bearing wheels which made a wonderful clatter as we went over the paving slabs. Guy Fawkes Night we had the biggest bonfire ever, made up from floorboards and doors from abandoned houses and set in the middle of the road! The quiet war period didn’t last

long, Hitler had made a new weapon of destruction called a ‘doodlebug’ official title V.1 a small unmanned aeroplane driven by a jet engine with a limited amount of fuel, when the fuel ran out the engine stopped and the aeroplane, now a missile, came spiralling down, exploding when it hit the ground, causing considerably more damage than the previous bombs. Whilst we children found it fascinating to stand outside and watch the ‘doodlebugs’ coming over and then running for the shelters when the engine cut out, our parents decided to send us away again, and I went back to Oxford and the Chandler family.

A bit older now, I was able to mix with the Land Girls and some Italian Prisoners of War who were allowed out of their camp to help the farmers grow crops to help feed a somewhat starving nation, and during the school holidays, work on the farm potato picking, a back aching job following the tractor which dug them up, picking up the potatoes, knocking mud off and putting them in sacks for the men to carry to the farmer’s trailer. Harvest time was much more fun, in the sunshine putting the straw in stooks after threshing the corn then building the straw into haystacks. All hard work but wonder of wonders pocket money at the end of the week.

Another year passed during which our soldiers invaded France and overran the ‘doodlebug’ launching sites, this meant another quiet time and I returned home once more. Before leaving, Mrs Chandler had now taken a liking to me (I don’t know why because I was quite mischievous) and expressed a desire to adopt me. Sad to say this was the last time I saw her and the family,

because over the following years, being a teenager, then the army, and marriage my ‘evacuation’ thoughts faded away, and when eventually I did call at the house many, many years later the whole family had passed away, Mr and Mrs Chandler and their son Roy and it was Roy’s wife, now a widow who invited me in and showed me the family photo album where I appeared several times and went on to tell me how often they had spoken about me.

Back to the story, now back in Poplar and my old haunts, another new terrifying weapon was soon to attack us, this one was a V2

Rocket that exploded without any warning, and even more powerful than the doodlebugs, when one landed a couple of hundred yards away, it moved our entire roof about six inches, it also killed my best friend Norman who just happened to be close by, lucky me! Another scare and another move, this time to an aunt in Enfield and another new school, where I had my first encounter with a school bully, who tormented me, because I was left handed, but this became his undoing and pushing me too hard one day he ended up with a bloody nose delivered courtesy of a straight left hand. He never troubled me again and I became the school hero. It was also at this school that I played truant, only once and never to be repeated because I spent the whole day hiding in the garage terrified that someone would find me, and praying for 4 o’clock to come round. Incidents including a broken bike eventually decided this aunt to move me on to another aunt in Forest Gate and this time to my final junior school, St Anthony’s where I started to play real football in a team, but needed proper socks. With nothing in the shops my Nan knitted me the most wonderful woollen socks with green and

white stripes that came over my knees. For the start of my first game I was the smartest player on the pitch, and then it rained. Rain and wool are a bad combination and the socks soon found their way down to my boots.

I had a happy time at this school and after five different junior schools I was now approaching the scholarship year and the 11 plus… and time I think to end this ramble.

News from News from News from News from Sheering Sheering Sheering Sheering SchoolSchoolSchoolSchool

Our children love to read and achieve well in this area of the curriculum but we are always looking for ways to make things even better. Children need to be good readers to become good writers so it is vitally important to engage them in the written word in a way that excites and interests them. Recently we have held a Book Week in school to raise the profile of reading, and hopefully encourage some of our more reluctant readers to dip their nose in a good book. We wanted the week to be fun for children and adults alike and we started by asking everyone to bring a favourite book into school. At different times during the day we rung our old school bell and this was a signal for everyone to ‘drop everything and read’. This included all adults and it was really great to have the opportunity to get lost in a book for ten minutes during the day, and for the children to see adults reading too. Peace descended on the school during these pockets of time! Everyone was also asked to try reading in an unusual place. We asked parents to photograph their child reading in their chosen place and they have been displayed

in the entrance hall. We’ve had a tube train, a cupboard, the boot of a car, an old bicycle and in front of the television, to name a few. During ‘super storytime’ every adult in school chose a book that they wanted to share with some children. After describing the books to the whole school, each child chose the book they wanted to listen to and the groups found spaces in school where they could share the book together. We had a group in the office, the staff room, the library, each classroom, the

corridor and the hall. We were very lucky to have a visit from Helen Moss, a

respected children’s author who wrote the Adventure Island series of books; a modern day Famous Five.

Helen told everyone about her path to becoming a writer, what inspires her and how she writes on a day to day basis. She also spent time with our older children, helping them to develop their

writing skills and showing them how the writing process could work for them. The end of the week

coincided with Red Nose Day

and lots of children chose to

dress up as a favourite book

character.

Although work was due to start on the bridge in February it is understood that delays in communications between Essex County Council Highways and The Land Agency has put the date back. I am assured by District Councillor, Richard Morgan that there is no dispute with the landowners.

The scaffolding remains in place and the road remains closed. Residents in Church Lane, walkers and their dogs are enjoying the lack of traffic.

There was a great turn-out for the quiz on 23 February. The Village Hall was abuzz with groups of eager contestants ready to face quizmaster John Smith and his trusty team of helpers. There were tables from Sheering Women’s Institute, Sheering church choir, Holy Trinity church Hatfield Heath, the United Reformed church Hatfield Heath, two teams from Sheering Cricket Club, and several groups of friends and neighbours. .

John set a wide range of challenging questions, and as ever the scores fluctuated when teams played their Joker. After a few rounds there was a sociable break for bring-your-own food; it is always interesting to see what the people on other tables are eating and drinking! After a couple more rounds, the raffle was drawn, final scores were revealed (it was close) and the members of the winning team claimed their bottle of wine each.

We had a lot of fun, and raised just over £435 for Friends funds.

Update on the ClockUpdate on the ClockUpdate on the ClockUpdate on the Clock

The tower clock is a World War II war memorial, which was commissioned in the late 1940s. It has an unusual master/slave mechanism: the master clock is located in the vestry, and controls the striking mechanism in the tower. Also in the tower is a power supply unit, probably installed in the 1960s, which provides constant voltage to make the clock run to time. This unit now appears to have come to the end of its natural life, and the clock has been stopped for some weeks. Plans are in hand for repairs, and we hope to have the clock striking again shortly.

The churchyard is maintained by a small band of dedicated volunteers led by Chris Harriss. They do a brilliant job, but they find that trimming the hedges by hand is a huge and daunting task. So they - and all of

us - are extremely grateful to Messrs Phil Newman, Barry Newman and David Griggs for the beautiful job they did over the weekend of 23/24 February trimming all the hedges with machinery kindly loaned by Mr Ian Liddell.

Fixed penalty Notices Fixed penalty Notices Fixed penalty Notices Fixed penalty Notices

for Environmental Offencesfor Environmental Offencesfor Environmental Offencesfor Environmental Offences

The council introduced the use of fixed penalty notices to cover a wide range of environmental offences in February 2010.

FPN are designed to deal with the low grade anti-social behaviour that takes up a disproportionate amount of time and money in prosecuting through the courts compared with the fines imposed.

Among the offences for which a FPN may be issued are littering, graffiti, fly-posting, and dog fouling. For some offences, anyone offered the opportunity to discharge their responsibility for prosecution of an offence by payment of a fixed penalty will get a discount if they pay within 10 days.

Environment and neighbourhood officers employed and authorised by Epping Forest District Council can offer offenders the opportunity to pay a fixed penalty within 14 days of being issued with a notice, as an alternative to going to court, for a number of different offences.

Whenever I can, I like to walk from Lower Sheering to Sawbridgeworth. I wish I could look at my surroundings but

due to the dog mess left on footpaths I have to keep my

Not only is it a health hazard, but it is illegal with a £1000 fine when caught. The dog wardens will be monitoring this.

The Rector Writes:The Rector Writes:The Rector Writes:The Rector Writes:

Dear Sheering Residents,

Throughout March we had the season of Lent, and we have now come to Easter. Winter is behind us and Spring has come!

Some weeks back we marked the beginning of Lent by having pancakes in Sheering Church Room. Great fun was had with the hot dough (and none went on the floor!), sugar and lemon juice.

We have also celebrated some great occasions with our village school and community on Mothering Sunday and Education Sunday.

Some of us marked Lent quite literally by taking the cross-mark of ash on our foreheads during the traditional Ash Wednesday service.

I showed the children at Sheering school the ash I was going to use. They had the usual reaction of seeing the black goo! But they also took it very seriously, and asked why they could see little bits of leaves in the ash.

The ash used on Ash Wednesday is a symbol

of penitence and our mortality. That is quite a sombre thought. But the ash is made from Palm leaves (the very ones we may have waved on Palm Sunday in 2012). This is why it is so black, and also why you can see little bits of un-burnt leaves in it.

I think that the fact of the leaves mixed in with the ash is a powerful symbol. Here we have the sombreness of Ash Wednesday mixed with the exuberant joy of Palm Sunday. This says something about our lives and the lives of all people: that they are a mixture of ups and downs, highs and lows.

Much of our society today tries to keep us away from the sad times. It pretends they don’t exist. But pretending something is not there when it really is, isn’t a good thing. Lent, however, reminds us of the diversity of human life. It tells us that God is with us through all the circumstances we face. Lent reminds us that God loves us for who we are, AND wants to change us for the better.

Because of the sombreness of Lent, we can look forward even more to the joys of new life now at Easter.

Happy Easter Everyone.

Best wishes,

Stewart

Fundraising cyclist to pedal Fundraising cyclist to pedal Fundraising cyclist to pedal Fundraising cyclist to pedal 354 miles for St Clare Hospice354 miles for St Clare Hospice354 miles for St Clare Hospice354 miles for St Clare Hospice Pedal power will raise money for St Clare Hospice when Rickie Thomas sets out on two fundraising challenges which will see him cycle a total of 354 miles. Rickie, whose father-in-law Kevin Scales died at the Hospice in 2007, recalls the care, support - and food - given to the patients and their families during Kevin’s time at St Clare. “It’s fantastic,” he said. “They provide so much for so many people in need. “If I can raise just £200 that will be enough to provide the patients with a great choice of home-cooked meals and keep their families in supply of tea and coffee for a day.” With the help of family, friends and work colleagues at London

Underground, where Rickie works as a track manager, he hopes to raise several hundred pounds for the charity. Rickie, 34, from Harlow, regularly cycles the lanes around Matching Green and Matching Tye covering between 10 and 30 miles every Sunday

as part of a weekly total of some 80 miles. He cycles every day and also visits the gym but despite all the preparation he admits that it will be tough. “I’m hopeful,” he said. “I know it’s going to be hard.” Rickie’s first charity ride will see him cycle 54 miles from London to Brighton on Sunday, June 16. He will then have a month to prepare for an even more daunting challenge - pedalling some 300 miles from London to Paris starting on Wednesday, July 17. Rickie said: “The first day of the London to Paris event is 90 miles from London to Dover. I’ve got to do it otherwise I will miss the ferry!”

Rickie is receiving special support from his son, Frankie, 8, whose name features on his fundraising poster and he hopes to receive a boost from the Red Lion pub in Potter Street and the Park Inn Hotel in Southern Way, Harlow.

Rotarians who are holding a charity golf day in aid of St Clare Hospice are appealing for items for an auction of promises. The Rotary Club of Epping is holding the golf day at Saffron Walden Golf Club on Thursday, May 30. The annual event raises about £15,000. Part of the day is an auction of promises of either a service or item. Rotarian Geoff Woollerson said: "Most people know about St Clare and the wonderful palliative care it provides in our area. "Although it does receive some NHS funding from the government this represents only 30 per cent and the balance has to be raised by charity events such as ours. "We are proud to be associated with St Clare and help to raise these much needed funds but we are desperately short of pledges and donations this year." Anyone who can provide an auction item can contact St Clare Hospice's Uttlesford fundraiser, Sarah Calder, on 07528 520016 or Geoff Woollerson on 01799 520615. A rare vinyl album donated to the St Clare Hospice bookstore in Bishop’s Stortford has raised £325 for the charity.

The copy of the 1969 album Sound of Sunforest was snapped up just 24 hours after it had been put on display in the shop in Devoils

Lane last Friday.

Shop manager Jeff Hepting said the speedy sale of the folk rock album had given the staff a buzz for the rest of the day.

“I did my Internet research on the album, priced it accordingly but to sell it so quickly was great,” said Jeff, who has worked in vinyl record shops in the past.

The record was brought in by a woman who had cleared out books and records from her husband’s collection.

“I don’t think she would have known how rare it was…I just hope her husband didn’t mind!” Jeff added.

It is not the first time the St Clare Hospice shop has sold a rare record: It once sold a copy of the only album by The Koobas, a band signed by Brian Epstein, for £450. The record had been found in a shopping trolley.

Unmarked lorry aims to Unmarked lorry aims to Unmarked lorry aims to Unmarked lorry aims to improve driving standardsimprove driving standardsimprove driving standardsimprove driving standards

Two officers have been trained to drive the cab section of an HGV to crack down on truckers and car drivers who use a mobile phone behind the wheel and refuse to wear seatbelts.

The height of the unmarked

lorry means officers have ideal vantage points looking into other trucks, cars and vans.

While one officer drives the grey Mercedes Actros, the other keeps watch from the passenger seat and uses a radio to pass information to other nearby officers patrolling on bike or by car who can stop the offending drivers.

The officers also deal with general policing matters and help with major operations as well as keeping watch for suspicious activity near bridges during their patrols on the A12.

The lorry has been owned by Essex Police for many years and is normally used to haul a large trailer which has been converted into a mobile control centre for use at major incidents or events.

Adam Pipe, Essex Police’s casualty reduction manager, said: “It is being used for road safety and general policing patrols and is especially useful for keeping

an eye on lorry drivers and motorists who are not driving safely or are breaking the law by using phones and other devices or not wearing seat belts.

“It has been a real eye-opener to see the results of the HGV patrols because police in cars or on motorbikes cannot see

in the lofty cabs of lorries.

“We are extremely concerned at the way drivers are being distracted at the wheel, especially with the massive increase in the use of smart phones and iPads. There have also been reports of some lorry drivers watching TV or films while driving.

“We are determined that through patrols with the HGV we can reduce the dangers of commercial drivers taking liberties and putting innocent lives at risk.”
