India's World Heritage palaces, beautiful Himalayan mountains, and ancient cultures offer unique learning

opportunities, set in stunning locations.

India is one of the most fascinating countries on Earth - one of the world’s oldest civilisations, the world’s largest democracy, and a secular state with a strong tradition of religious freedom.

Our India programme is based in the peaceful village of Dharamsala in the Indian Himalayas. The region provides spectacular mountain scenery, lakes, and forests. Dharamsala was the favourite retreat of British Viceroys, and is also known worldwide as the 14th Dalai Lama’s residence. The area has strong Buddhist roots, dating back 2,700 years.

Build Up Day All team members will meet at the school. Your Global Action Expedition Leader will check your kit, and provide health and safety briefings. To prepare you for your unique visits, you can watch short films on the charities and cooperatives you will be meeting, and consider questions for the managers.

Days 1 – 2: UK – Amritsar – Dharamsala Today you fly to Amritsar, arriving the following morning. On arrival, you can relax in your hotel, before travelling to Dharamsala. It is a beautiful drive through rural Punjab, before ascending to mountain valleys covered with rhododendrons.

Days 3 – 7: Dharamsala Based in the Indian Himalayas, you can enjoy a variety of seminars and interactive visits. Current options include: Tibetan Refugees and Democracy in Exile Since 1959 many Tibetans have fled Tibet to surrounding countries, many to Northern India, and especially Dharamsala. This has led to Dharamsala being named ‘Little Lhasa’, an important centre for the Tibetan refugee community. You will learn about Tibet and the strength of cultural identity through the following activities:

• A seminar with a Tibetan refugee who will share his experiences of Tibet, escape to India and life as a refugee

• Visit the outstanding Tibet Museum, to learn about Tibetan culture, the invasion and current situation

• A guided tour of the Tibetan Parliament, where the democratically-elected Government-in-exile resides, managing Tibetan refugees around the world

We have options to enjoy talks on Women’s rights and gender issues by a young woman who works with the Womens’ Empowerment Desk in the Tibetan Government, and environmental issues in the Himalayas, which play a crucial role in regulating Asia’s weather patterns.

World Religions Now the home of the 14th Dalai Lama, Dharamsala is the perfect place to learn about Tibetan Buddhism. You do this through the following:

• A seminar with a practicing Tibetan lama, speaking openly about his day-to-day life as a Buddhist teacher, and exploring beliefs of Tibetan Buddhists.

Your sample itinerary

Page 7: also visit Amritsar’s€¦ · • World Religions: Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism; Philosophy and Ethics; Meditation Geography: The trip is mainly based in Dharamsala at an altitude

• Visit the Dalai Lama’s Monastery, where you learn about its huge importance to pilgrims who come here from all over the world, and observe monks debating in the courtyard!

• Spend the morning immersed in Buddhist teaching and meditation at a local monastery or nunnery, for example Thosamling Nunnery or Dolma Ling Nunnery. Dolma Ling was the first institute in India to provide the highest level of Buddhist education for nuns. We can visit the tailoring and crafts workshop, and retreat centres. You can ask why they became nuns, and what their daily life is like, which starts at 6am with meditation!

Poverty reduction and access to education Ensuring inclusive and equitable education is one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Education is a fundamental human right and is crucial for the achievement of sustainable development. Education will empower girls, combat climate change, fight inequality and end poverty. You will have an opportunity to engage with different education settings, comparing opportunities presented to different ethnic groups:

• Participate in a service project at a local Indian primary school, helping to make the school a safer and more engaging environment for students to gain the vital education needed. You will get a chance to learn about the India education system and engage with local students

• Spend an afternoon at the inspirational Tibetan Children’s Village School which educates 3,000 students, most of whom are orphans or newly arrived refugees from Tibet. Children are raised as brothers and sisters. You meet Tibetan students and teachers and enjoy some interactive games

• Find out how the charity Tong Len are improving health and education in local Rajasthani refugee slum, and their holistic approach to children’s education, with a focus on Secular Ethics: Trust, Compassion, Truth, Respect and Non-Violence.

Indian Culture and Hinduism

• Spend time at a local Hindu Temple, where you will be able to receive a blessing from a priest, explore the temple, and learn about Hinduism from our experienced guides

• Following lessons from our local Hindi teachers, practice your Hindi and immerse yourself in the local culture through visits to the shopping streets of Dharamsala and Mcleod Ganj.

Social enterprise Meet the founder of Dolls4Tibet where you will learn about Fair Trade principles, enterprise development, women’s empowerment, and social integration. You will also explore the renowned Norbulingka Institute, set-up by the Dalai Lama. Learn how master craftsmen and women are preserving ancient traditions by teaching young apprentices statue-making, wood and stone-carving, and traditional art skills. On your last day you have a chance to spend time in the shopping centre of Mcleod Ganj to get those last minute souvenirs and take a chance to rest in the street-side cafes before lunch and returning to our hotel for a fun afternoon of Indian cultural dress and Bollywood dancing!

Day 8: Dharamsala – Amritsar; Visit the Golden Temple After returning to Amritsar, you have a guided tour of the stunning Golden Temple, one of the 7 Wonders of India, to learn about India’s history and Sikhism. The Golden Temple is believed to have healing powers which attract pilgrims from all over the world. Floating at the end of a long marble causeway, the temple itself is a mesmerising blend of Hindu and Sikh architecture, with its many levels of marble, flower and animal motifs, topped by a dome gilded with gold. Inside, we will see priests chanting, and pilgrims praying.

Page 9: also visit Amritsar’s€¦ · • World Religions: Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism; Philosophy and Ethics; Meditation Geography: The trip is mainly based in Dharamsala at an altitude

Afterwards, you visit the Guru-Ka-Langar: a huge dining room which serves thousands of Sikh pilgrims a day who eat after praying at the temple. Hundreds of daily volunteers cater to everyone, from the poorest to millionaires, and it’s a humbling demonstration of the Sikh principles of hospitality and service. As an inspirational service activity to our trip, we will make chapattis and help serve meals to the pilgrims.

Days 9 - 11: Delhi We enjoy 3 nights in India’s vibrant capital, Delhi. This includes:

• Exploring the Red Fort - one of the most magnificent palaces of the world, and World Heritage Site. Here we learn about India’s history, the early invasions, Mughal emperors, and the establishment of the Slave Dynasty.

• Examining the later Islamic influences with a guided tour of the sacred Masjid-i Jahān-Numā, one of the largest mosques in India. Here we appreciate Islamic worship, art, architecture and symmetry in action.

• Visiting the Village of Hope - with the children from the Hope school, and Village of Hope Leprosy colony – to learn about medical effects of poverty and social exclusion.

• Visiting Tigri school and education project, Sangham Vihar

On our last day, we can enjoy some shopping in local markets and a Global Learning review on what you have learnt. This includes recognizing the causes of the local and global issues, and possible solutions to them. You then consider what you can do when you return to the UK, to contribute to being global citizens.

Day 12: Delhi - UK Today, you check into Delhi’s International Airport for your return flight to the UK. You can reflect on your unique experience. You arrive in the UK, with memories to last a lifetime!

“The trip massively exceeded my expectations, it involved lots of activities to allow us to explore different cultures.”

Student, Millfield School

The Tibetan Children’s Village (TCV), a school which educates 3,000 students, most of whom are orphans or newly arrived refugees from Tibet. We will be truly inspired to see how the children receive an outstanding education, while living in boarding houses with foster parents as a self-contained family unit.

Tong-Len, the UK and Indian charity, which is helping Indian people living in slums near Dharamsala. Tong-Len have built and now run a primary school for displaced children, before they attend government school.

Dolls4Tibet a social enterprise: see Tibetan refugees working with Indian women in a mutually supportive environment, providing a sense of achievement to refugee women, often lacking in self-esteem and language skills.

Dolma Ling Nunnery, the first institute from all Buddhist traditions to provide the highest level of Buddhist education for nuns. The nuns receive a 17-year course of traditional Buddhist education, and go on to teach in schools throughout Asia. In 2017, Dolma Ling nuns made history, becoming the first Tibetan women to successfully pass their exams for a Doctorate in Buddhist philosophy.

The Tibet Policy Institute, is an internationally recognized organisation, that advises the Tibetan Government in Exile and many countries internationally, on strategic policy issues affecting Tibet.

“Global Action were really well organised - they picked guides and leaders well, and our safety was always their priority. The community work gave me a huge sense of satisfaction and reminded me of how little others have, and to

appreciate what I do have.” Student, Roedean School

How? The best thing about fundraising is that there are no set rules – it is a great opportunity to be creative, and have a lot of fun in the process! Most of our students do two types of Fundraising:

1. Individual Fundraising Most of your fundraising will come from activities you organise on your own, e.g. in School Holidays, Weekends, or Week Day Evenings. The big benefit is that you get to keep all the profits! We’ve had many students over the years prove that fundraising for their expedition in this way is very achievable.

2. Team Fundraising Working together with others going on your expedition is a great way to start getting to know your teammates and build teamworking skills. By pooling your resources and ideas, you can run larger scale events, publicise these wider, and often make use of venues you might not have access to as an individual. Do bear in mind you will have to split the profits between your team! We have over 10 years’ experience supporting students fundraising efforts, and will help you to set up a Fundraising committee to coordinate team activities.

When should I get started? It’s never too early to start fundraising for your trip – there’s an easy way to get started on the next page!

Fundraising towards your expedition

Fundraising for your expedition is a key part of your Global Action experience. As well as

raising cash for your trip, fundraising helps to develop entrepreneurial, budgeting and

teamwork skills, and will give you a fantastic sense of achievement!

Ideas…

✓ Bake Sale: get your team together and get baking – sell these at break time at school!

✓ Quiz or Restaurant evening: selling tickets for an event evening at your school or a local restaurant can

be a great money spinner – think about adding a raffle or auction of promises.

✓ Supermarket bag packing: contact your local supermarket manager to see if you can help pack bags and

shoppers donate for your help.

Ideas…

✓ Part Time Work: get a job during your holidays or weekends. You could deliver newspapers or work in a

local shop / café! Get a CV ready and ask friends and family who may know of local opportunities.

✓ Odd jobs at home or for neighbours: offer to babysit, dog walk, cut the grass, car wash…any odd jobs!

Tell people why you are raising the money too.

✓ Car boot sale or Ebay: sell items you no longer use or need for money towards your fundraising, or ask

people if they can donate items they no longer need that you can sell.

✓ Easyfundraising.org.uk: fundraise every time you shop online – see details overleaf!

✓ Sponsored events: sign up for a sponsored run, cycle or swim, ask friends, family, neighbours, work colleagues etc. to pledge to sponsor you and get fit for your expedition at the same time as fundraising!

Fundraising is a key element of your personal development, and will give you a fantastic sense of achievement, both as an individual, and as a team! Apart from raising cash for your trip, this will give you increased confidence, and develop your entrepreneurial skills.

As the majority of your target will be reached by individual fundraising, you need to plan these activities especially well. Ideas include: Part-time work Examples include:

✓ Delivering newspapers & leaflets ✓ Office or Shop work, including supermarkets ✓ Working in a café, restaurant, hotel etc. ✓ Sports coaching or Lifeguarding at local swimming pools

Easyfundraising ➢ Register your expedition (e.g. Global Action Costa Rica 2020 – Joe Bloggs) at: global-

action.easyfundraising.org.uk

➢ Visit easyfundraising.org every time you (or your family) shop online, then shop as normal by clicking out to a retailer’s site. Every time you buy something, you’ll receive a donation towards your trip.

➢ Encourage your friends and family to sign up to shop in support of you too – your funds will soon mount up! Saving Christmas and birthday money

➢ Ask for the cash value of gifts for that year.

Recycle used printer cartridges (raise cash quickly and help the environment) ➢ Ask local companies if you can have their used printer cartridges ➢ Then use websites to recycle the cartridges for cash. Postage is usually paid for by the websites you use, so it’s

quick money towards your trip! Research websites to get the best price for each cartridge e.g.: http://www.gtrecycling.com/recycle http://www.therecyclingfactory.com http://www.cashforcartridges.co.uk

Support from local businesses ➢ Think about the kind of support you could ask for (e.g. their support for a specific event or if you are running a

raffle, ask them if they would kindly donate prizes) ➢ Think about what is in it for the company – there should be a good reason why they should support you. ➢ You can promote the company at your next event, e.g. by wearing a t-shirt or displaying a banner. Address your

letter to the correct person, then follow-up with a phone call / email. ➢ Edit the ‘Global Action Trusts letter template’ - ensure your letter has all the important facts: why, how, how

much etc.

Crowdfunding ➢ Set up a crowdfunding page online, using one of these fundraising websites that are great for individuals or

groups such as www.gofundme.com or www.justgiving.com ➢ Explain the benefits you will get from the trip and what you will be learning

Group bag-packing in supermarket

➢ Contact the manager at the supermarket (ensuring a few months advance notice). ➢ Set yourselves up with one student per cashier, each with a bucket stating school name and destination. Make

sure you know the trip aims and activities (e.g. community projects, environmental projects etc.) that you can tell the shoppers while you are bag-packing!

➢ Make a suggestion to bag-pack, for example, a total of 4 days when you can earn up to £150 per day. Total 4 days x £150 = £600 per person. The best times to do this is at Christmas & Easter.

Fundraising evening – local restaurant ➢ One of the best ways to raise money for the team – it’s eventful and really enjoyable. ➢ Invite all participants, parents, friends, relatives ➢ Team charges £25 per person (£15 of which is the cost of the meal, £10 towards the trip). If you have 45 coming

to the dinner, you can make £450 straight away ➢ Auction prizes donated by parents of the participants which can raise £800 and raffle prizes which can raise £300. ➢ Total that can be raised is £1550 from this activity alone, and it is easy to organise!

Some other ideas:

➢ Quiz during break or lunch: a quiz based on your destination (with a prize for winner) ➢ Cake sales / hot dog sales: (at break, parents evenings) ➢ Group car washes ➢ Persuade the school to have a non-uniform day, with proceeds going to the trip ➢ Group car boot sale: advertise at school and in all the local papers (put a sign up e.g. at the exit of a local

supermarket) ➢ School disco or Race night ➢ Local business sponsorship (see above for individual fundraising).

The team should aim to complete 1-2 activities per term from this list that makes the most amount of cash for minimum effort. (Do not choose complicated activities, which are too time-consuming or difficult to organise). The Fundraising Co-ordinator is responsible for co-ordinating team meetings and will email you:

➢ What has been agreed ➢ Who is responsible for what activities and by when? ➢ Date, time and location for the next meeting

Consider appointing a new Fundraising Coordinator each term, so each of you can participate in managing these meetings. Most importantly: PLEASE ENSURE YOU ATTEND EACH MEETING!
