Day 1 – Wednesday 17 August 2016

Depart Dublin on www.ryanair.com ETD 1235 – arrive Santander ETA 1535.

The tour bus, accompanied by the Tour Leader & Guide will collect the Group at Santander airport between 1600-1630 & drive to the historic Asturian town of Cangas de Onís where you will enjoy a tour & begin to immerse & soak up the ambiance of the people & the Picos. Accommodation for the first night will be in shared rooms at Hostal Fermín in Cangas de Onís.

Day 2 – Thursday 18 August 2016

Route 1 - Lagos de Covadonga – Vegarredonda

The day begins with a 45 min bus transfer from Cangas de Onís (87m) to Lagos de Covadonga. We begin the route through the Macizo Occidental from Lago Enol (1,100m), then walk on by the rocky valley of Vega de la Piedra (1,120m) to the Mirador de Ordiales (1,742m) described as the “Kingdom of chamois & eagles”. It is the place of the eternal rest of Pedro Pidal, Marquis of Villaviciosa, founder of the first national parks in Spain. We eat en route. Spectacular vistas await you before descending from Mirador de Ordiales to the Refugio Vegarredonda (1,400m) for a well earned meal & rest.

Day 3 – Friday 19 August 2016

Route 2 - Vegarredonda – Caín

The next day you leave Vegarredonda (1,400m) & climb passing the peak of Peña/Jou Santo (2,596m) & trek onward through the Valley of Vertigo – the Canal de Mesones by El Boquette (2,000m) & on to Caín (460m). Eat on route. Finally reaching Caín, we stay in the Hostal there.

Day 4 – Saturday 20 August 2016

Route 3 - Caín - Collado Jermoso

This route takes you from Caín (460m) up a 1,700m ascent through the Rienda de Asotín, a climb that finally reaches the awesome vistas that surround the Collado Jermoso (2,064m), that looks at first glance to be perched precariously on a cliff edge. From this vantage point can be seen the most colourful & wonderful sunsets in Spain.

Day 5 – Sunday 21 August 2016

Route 4 – Collado Jermoso - Cabaña Verónica – Horcados Rojos - Vega de Urriellu

The day begins with spectacular views of the sunrise over Collado Jermoso (2,064m). The walk

will take us through some of the more challenging tracks between cliff faces via the curious

Cabaña de Verónica (2,325m). This is a small refugio where we stop for a short rest & beer. The

refugio has just 4 bunks & is constructed from the cupola of an anti-aircraft gun system of USA

aircraft carried “Palau”. Via Horcados Rojos (2,506m) our path takes us toward the icon of the

Picos “El Naranjo de Bulnes” (2,520m) & finally we arrive at the Vega de Urriellu (1,960m).

Day 6- Monday 22 August 2016

Route 5 - Vega de Urriellu – Fuente De

This is another challenging day taking us on a route through high rocky surface with a complex mix of rock & earth underfoot. This route must be walked in good conditions & with great care. The cairned path goes up through Canal de la Jenduda, a steep chute with scree & one short climb, secured with a rope. The challenge, views, negotiating the cliffs & overhangs are worth the effort. Vega de Urriellu (1,960m) – Collada Bonita (2,382m) – Canal de Vidrio – Vega de Áliva (1,700m) – El Cable (1,850m) – Canal de la Jenduda – Fuente De (1,050m)

Day 7 – Tuesday 23 August 2016

Route 6 Fuente De – Cosgaya

The final route takes us from Fuente De (1,094m) near the source of the river Rio Deva. We walk for half of this route with very little variation of altitude while the second half takes us down through Espinama (877m), Las Ilces, finishing at Cosgaya (530m). Note the architecture of Espinama, enjoy the route near the banks of the river Deva at the foot of the lush forests that descend from the heights above. Some of the few bears in the Cantabrian Mountains, an elusive species, take refuge here. We pass through the small town of Las Ilces, through dense forest of beech & oak. Finally we take a taxi/bus from Cosgaya (530m) & drive for 15 min to Potes. We stay in Potes – relaxing, enjoying the history, gastronomy, unique “bebida” of this gem village, at the very heart of the Picos. It is a 13th century town. Walk among the historic buildings. Enjoy its culinary excellence “El cocido lebaniego es una de sus estrellas culinarias” – the Gastronomy of this region should be tasted with it’s wines & unique Orujo “los famosos licores de elaboración artesanal, el orujo”- perhaps it is here that Baileys found it’s récipe!!!

Day 8 – Wednesday 24 August 2016

This is the final day. We take a bus from Potes & transfer to the airport in Santander. www.ryanair.com departs Santander ETD 1600 arriving in Dublin ETA at 1715.
