A CNG fuel system’s useable capacity can be calculated by multiplying the cylinder’s filling efficiency (%) by the cylinder’s capacity (DGE), and then subtracting the amount of unrecoverable capacity (DGE) based on the system empty pressure. Knowing the useable capacity offers a better understanding of the CNG vehicle’s range. Exhibit A displays an example of Worthington’s range calculator, which is used to help fleets understand the impact of useable capacity on vehicle range.
The ability of a regulator to meet engine displacement needs will affect the amount of unrecoverable capacity in your fuel system. Exhibit B reviews a discharge curve graph of Worthington’s high pressure regulator. As pressure in your system drops, it is critical that the regulator can meet displament requirements of the engine to ensure your system will work at system pressures below 200 psi.
Worthington provides optimized solutions to common industry challenges by integrating a coalescing filter and a high pressure regulator, which maximize operating range and up time.

Filters not only perform the critical function of removing contaminants prior to reaching the engine, but also affect the flow of gas to the engine. Worthington’s high pressure coalescing filter removes contaminants as small as 0.01 microns in size and promotes flow rates of 58 SCFM at 250 psig. Additionally, the 5 oz. sump capacity will capture excess fuel station compressor oil, which protects critical engine components, like fuel injectors.
Worthington understands that every truck, driver, and application are different. Our sales team is your consultant in the truck spec’ing process and will develop a plan tailored to meet your fuel capacity needs.
