The Wiltshire Rural Housing Association is committed to developing sustainable, new and refurbished, affordable rental properties in Wiltshire. The innovative and energy efficient ‘Altherma’ air-to-water heat pump was specified to supply central heating and hot water services in a new WRHA development of 10 two bedroom homes in Codford, Wiltshire. The installation, completed in December 2007, satisfies local planning authority requirements regarding the incorporation of low to zero carbon renewable technologies.

Name of application: WRHA Codford Housing development

Type of application: New build social housing. 10 x 2 bedroom terraced properties.

Property location: Codford Wiltshire.

Heating & hot water options: Oil, LPG, direct electric or heat pump

System installed: “Altherma” 5kW system – heat pump, Hydrobox & 150ltr. storage cylinder

Reason for selecting ‘Altherma’:

With no mains gas available and other options considered environmentally undesirable by WRHA and the local

planning authorities, “Altherma”, manufactured by Daikin and supplied by Space Air has been successfully

applied in other Wiltshire developments. The WRHA were satisfied that “Altherma” met their sustainable

housing objectives, reduced construction costs associated with conventional fossil fuel systems, and offered

considerably lower user operating costs and carbon footprint than the available alternatives.

This substantial, classic Surrey home on a private, gated estate near Guildford suffered from poor insulation, original single glazed windows and an oversized, inefficient gas boiler. The owner chose to replace the boiler with an energy efficient, environmentally friendly alternative and selected the “Altherma” having had previous knowledge of Daikin quality products. The owner has established in a short winter period that his energy bills have greatly reduced and has since replaced his gas fired swimming pool heating system with an “Altherma” ‘packaged’ unit, also supplied by Space Air.

Name of application: Hazelwood

Type of application: Existing detached 7 bed house – replacing gas boiler

Property location: Guildford, Surrey

Exisiting system: 69,000 BTU Gas boiler serving radiators and hot water storage

System installed: ‘Altherma’ 11kW heat pump, Hydrobox, 300ltr. storage cylinder.

Reason for selecting ‘Altherma’:

Owner had previous knowledge of Daikin product quality and Space Air services. Owner was concerned about

Space Air launched “Altherma” in the Channel Islands in 2007, it immediately attracted the attention of several developers and private householders as the dominant alternative systems are bulky and expensive oil or LPG fired systems or direct electric heating. Additionally the Channel Islands offer reduced electricity tariffs for heat pump installations. This private residence was one of the first in Jersey to have an “Altherma” installation.

Name of application: Le Vivier

Type of application: Existing property - replacement of oil fired system

Property location: Grouville, Jersey

Alternative system: Oil fired, LPG or direct electric

System installed: ‘Altherma’ 7kW heat pump, Hydrobox, 200 ltr storage cylinder

Reason for selecting ‘Altherma’:

The client wished to replace his bulky, expensive oil fired system and remove the large (smelly) storage tank

from the garden. The “Altherma” offered an environmentally friendly and cost effective alternative, which

could also take advantage of a reduced rate electricity tariff.

The ‘Altherma’ system can satisfy your heating requirements on its own or working in conjunction with your existing system, should you wish to retain it. The owners of this stone built semi-detached property in Fife wanted to keep their 5.5kW wood burning stove as a back up system, but replace an existing Gas-fired boiler with the “Altherma” to handle the main heating and hot water demand. Retaining the installed radiators reduced the system costs.

Name of application: McClaren, Fife

Type of application: Existing 1875 stone built semi-detached house

Property location: Newport-on-Tay, Fife, Scotland

Alternative system: Wood burning stove retained, gas fired-boiler to be replaced

System installed: ‘Altherma’ 7Kw heat pump, Hydrobox, 200 ltr storage cylinder

Reason for selecting ‘Altherma’:

This home had a recent extension and additional heating capacity was required. Rather than purchase

a larger fossil fuel boiler the owners decided to go “green” and install a low to zero carbon renewable

technology system, they were impressed by the quality and performance of “Altherma” made by Daikin.

Name of application: Lawson, Fife

Type of application: Existing 1850s stone built cottage

Property location: Kirkton of Balmerino, Fife, Scotland

Exisiting or alternative system: Wood burning stove retained, oil-fired boiler replaced

System installed: ‘Altherma’ 7Kw heat pump, hydrobox and 150ltr storage cylinder

Reason for selecting ‘Altherma’:

‘Altherma’ offered a seasonal energy efficiency more than 21/2 times better than the existing oil-fired system.

Operating costs were substantially reduced, only one maintenance visit year is required and the carbon

emissions were reduced by an estimated 6.5 tonnes per annum.

This substantial Victorian Manor house in Wiltshire had a large oil-fired central heating system that struggled to satisfy the heating requirements and was due for replacement. The owners preferred to find an alternative to relying on oil and get rid of the bulky storage tank. Three ‘Altherma’ systems, one serving the ground floor heating, one for the first floor and the other for the hot water worked out cheaper than a new oil-fired system and was able to show substantial savings in running costs and carbon emissions.

Name of application: Victorian Manor House

Type of application: New heating and hot water system

Property location: Wiltshire

Alternative system: No mains gas, oil fired boiler to be replaced

System installed: 3 x 7kW “Altherma” heat pumps, 3 x Hydroboxes, 1 x 300ltr storage cylinder.

Reason for selecting ‘Altherma’:

The owner of this house is a successful property developer and hotelier. “Altherma” had already been field

trialled in one of the hotels and was also being considered for a significant new housing development. The

‘Altherma’ was assessed as more environmentally friendly compared with conventional fossil fuel alternatives

and ground/water source heat pumps. Following this successful installation, “Altherma” was later specified

for the owner’s housing development.

Space Air first launched the ‘Altherma’ system at the Ecobuild show in 2005 and exhibited the ‘Altherma’ system, manufactured by Daikin Europe, the following year at the Ideal Home Show. A local Builder from the Shetland Islands visited both shows, where he was able to see the system in full operation and speak to Space Air directly about the after sales and technical support that could be provided. This convinced him that the ‘Altherma’ system, supplied by Space Air, was the best solution to operate his own home underfloor heating.

Name of application: Hogar House

Type of application: New Build - Heating and Domestic Hot Water

Property location: Tresta, Shetlands

Alternative system: Oil fired, LPG boiler, direct electric, peat.

System installed: ‘Altherma’ 7kW heat pump, Hydro-box, 1 x 200ltr storage cylinder.

Reason for selecting ‘Altherma’:

Electricity is the most commonly used fuel on the Shetland Islands. ‘Altherma’ is a low energy consumption

inverter controlled heat pump system, ideally suited to this new build application. As ‘Altherma’ does

not involve combustion there is no need to include flues or ventilation saving on the overall build costs.

Refrigerant pipework connects the outdoor heat abosrber unit and the indoor hydro-box boiler which does

involve special skills, otherwise ‘Altherma’ simply plumbs into the wet central heating system in the same

way as with boilers.
