  • Step 3

You will need a 100% pure cottonshirt (cotton balls will not work). Now get a propane torch for thenext step.

    Step 4

Cut the cotton shirt into smallsquares. Put them in the Altoids tinand close it. Now put the tin in avise to hold it securely. Light thepropane torch and apply the flameto the tin. Keep the flame on the tintill you see no more smoke comingout the small hole. Remove theflame and let the tin cool. All of thecloth inside should now be charred. You can also do this over the coalsof a campfire, which is how Ilearned to do this in the BoyScouts.

How to light your char cloth: Youjust need a small flame or a spark.Bundle up some kindling into asmall ball and flatten it out. Keepthe kindling loose. Bits of brushwork well, and I generally useshaved bark. Place the char clothin the indentation that was formedwhen you flattened out the kindlingball. I always keep a magnesiumfire-starter on my keychain. Ifusing a magnesium fire-starter,make sure you aim at the charcloth when you strike themagnesium rod with the knife orblade on your leatherman tool.Once the char cloth starts to burn, hold the kindling ball with the charcloth lightly with your handscupped under the bottom. Makesure that once it ignites you aren'tgoing to burn your hands. Blowlightly across the char cloth andkindling ball until the kindlingignites. Make sure the char clothdoesn't blow off the ball. Once thekindling ball ignites, build a firearound it. Start with smaller sticksand slowly move up in size tomake sure you get a goodconsistent fire.
