2 2018 FEDUNI ROAD NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS EVENT PROGRAM WWW.ROADNATIONALS.ORG.AU 3

FROM CYCLING AUSTRALIAWelcome to the 2018 FedUni RoadNats

I am delighted to welcome everyone to Ballarat this year to

celebrate the brilliant festival of cycling that is the FedUni Road National Championships.

Now in its twelfth year in Ballarat, the iconic RoadNats is one of the premier events on the cycling calendar and kicks off the Victorian Summer of Cycling.

Earlier this year I announced Federation University Australia as the naming rights sponsor of this event. It’s a partnership that makes perfect sense given FedUni’s proximity to the famous Mt Buninyong circuit, and its excellent Sports Science programs, and we are delighted to have them on board for the next three years.

This year’s Road Nats will be invigorated with a range of new racing categories, community events, activities and participation opportunities for all cyclists and cycling fans.

We’ve also expanded the schedule to include events for our club riders (Team Time Trial and National Team Relay) and some great community events.

In particular we are excited to welcome two new categories with Australia’s best Under 19 and Para-cyclists set to join the Under 23 and Elite in the battle for the coveted green and gold jersey across Criterium, Time Trial and Road Races, with more than 20,000 spectators relishing the action.

In each of the Elite categories, every reigning champion is returning to Ballarat. Miles Scotson and Katrin Garfoot (Road), Caleb Ewan and Jessica Allen (Criterium), Katrin Garfoot and Rohan Dennis (Time Trial) and Callum Scotson, Alexandra Manly and Sam Jenner (Under 23) are all primed to defend their crowns, but there is no doubt they will be pushed by a veritable roll call of former champions and WorldTour heroes, with the confirmation of Amanda Spratt, Gracie Elvin, Peta Mullens, Shara Gillow,

Simons Gerrans, Richie Porte, Cameron Meyer and Luke Durbridge providing some mouth-watering start lists.

Not just for the elite, the Road Nationals Gran Fondo gives everyone a chance to embrace the atmosphere by riding the course themselves before the pros take it on, and this year the riders will be joined by some of the biggest names in the sport, including riders from the Mitchelton Scott team, commentator Matt Keenan and legendary broadcaster Phil Liggett.

The Road Nationals Championships would not be possible without support from Cycling Australia’s sponsors and event partners.

Along with Federation University Australia, we also welcome the TAC as a major partner for the next three years, and the Amy Gillett Foundation as the event’s Official Safety Partner. We believe that the 2018 FedUni Road Nats provides the perfect platform to strengthen the national message of road and cycling harmony via our broadcast and streaming partners, our social media community and spectators attending the event.

We are delighted to have the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute join us as Official Charity, and proud to support the world class contribution the Institute makes to cancer research.

I would also like to recognise the Australia Sports Commission for its guidance and significant commitment as Cycling Australia’s principal partner, and acknowledge our broadcast partners, SBS and FOX SPORTS Australia.

Special thanks to all the volunteers who are so important to the successful running of this important event.

Finally, to all the competitors, the best of luck to you all. We look forward to seeing your contributions to Road Nationals history and hope that you achieve your own goals in the process.

The Hon Steve Bracks AC Chair Cycling Australia

FROM CITY OF BALLARATIt is with great pleasure to welcome you to our beautiful city for the 2018 FedUni Cycling

Australia Road National Championships.

The Nationals continue to be the premier event on Australia’s cycling calendar and, as a city, we are proud to be the ongoing host.

The spectacular Buninyong circuit is widely regarded as the ultimate road race circuit, with a beautiful backdrop adding to the experience for the thousands of cyclists and spectators who converge on our city every January.

The fast-paced Criterium will again be contested in Sturt Street, where spectators can experience the cycling action up close.

And in 2018, we welcome two new categories with Australia’s best U19 and Para-cyclists set to join the U23 and elite in the battle for the coveted green and gold jersey – setting the bar even higher and further strengthening our city as a preferred cycling destination for all.

The City of Ballarat is proud of its work with Cycling Australia to build the Nationals into an internationally recognised event which brings thousands of people to Ballarat over summer.

The Nationals have become a much-loved and highly-regarded event in our community, and it shows on the proud faces of our residents and businesses owners who continue to welcome visitors into their shops, restaurants and cafes, and hotels and homes.

I look forward to watching the cycling action in January and I encourage you to embrace the competition and the many great Australian cyclists as they take to our streets for national honours.

I hope you enjoy your time in Ballarat and all that our surrounding townships have to offer.

Samantha McIntosh Mayor City of Ballarat

FROM FEDERATION UNIFederation University Australia is delighted to be the naming rights partner of the 2018

Cycling Australia Road National Championships.

For many years, this exciting event has passed right by our door. I’m thrilled that this year, for the first time, the elite road race circuit incorporates our picturesque Mt Helen Campus.

FedUni is a leader in sports science and management and our students’ learning, knowledge and research is strengthened by the opportunity to incorporate the Road National Championships as part of their studies.

We are very pleased to have worked alongside the City of Ballarat and our neighbours in Buninyong to help Cycling Australia deliver more than a first class Road Race – but a truly engaging festival of cycling, that caters for all age groups, and all levels of cycling expertise.

I extend a warm welcome to all competitors and spectators. Professor Helen Bartlett Vice-Chancellor and President
