Editor of ReflectionsThe editor oversees the publication of the Association newsletter from start to finish. It involves communicating with Board members, Class Reps and alumni on a regular basis, to gather articles, photos and a variety of details for publication, as well as coordinate photoshoots with our photographers. Editors must have an excellent use of the English language, a high attention to detail, ability to proofread, edit pre-written material and write captions. Ability to write articles is a plus. The editor prepares and approves the final copy of Reflections for emailing, posting on the website, and submitting to the printer. The ability to meet dead-lines is important. Reflections was once a 24-28 page newsletter pub-lished twice a year, and has transitioned to a much smaller-sized publica-tion six times a year. For more information on the Editor position, please call, text or email: Anne Barrows or Deb Puffer, see contact info. below under “Reflections Staff”.

Layout/Graphic Designer for Reflections Former editors, Anne Barrows and Karen Cycon, combined editorial duties with the task of Layout (placing Reflections content in a publishing software document). However, it can be filled as a separate position held by someone who will work closely with the Editor. It is highly recom-mended this person have experience working with Publishing Software, such as Publisher, Quark or the current software InDesign, AND experi-ence using a camera and a photo editing program such as Photoshop in order to edit, place and prepare photos for printing at our local print shop. For more information on the Layout/Graphic Design position, separate or combined with the Editor position, please call, text or email: Anne Bar-rows or Deb Puffer, see contact info. below under “Reflections Staff”.

Web TechI’m Ray Taylor, the Web Master for the Sidney Alumni Website. This site has come a long way over the years and is very large. This is a plea for help. I hope someone can help me run this program and also maybe move it to the next level. As of now, it does not display well on IPhones. Hopefully with some help, we could do that. Mostly it just needs to be kept up-to-date, which is a big project in itself. So if you understand the HTML code, I’m sure we could make a difference. Ray Taylor, Web Master, Sidney Alumni Web Site. Phone: (607) 563-2083, Email: [email protected]

Writers and Photographers in this Issue -- Reflections is made possible due to the collective effort and collaboration of Alumni! Thank you, to all who have written articles for this issue: Michael Sellitti, Greg Davie, Doug Sheldon, Deb Puffer, Allison Collins, TTN Reporter. Sports Hall of Fame Induction Dinner and Ceremony

Legacy Team 2018 -- The 1997-1998 boys’ basketball team Front row: Mike Graham, Mark Simmons (Ryan) , Ryan Boyle, Ryan Erbe, Charlie Carvin (Jon); Back row: Coach Don Pierce, Aaron Wood, Eric Miley, Steve Martin, Neal Miley, Eric Wetsig, Craig Dawson, Taylor Baker, Jason Dorsey, JV Coach Bob Finnegan, Tigi Armour (Larry) and Coach Mike Brazee.

More than 150 attended the 16th annual Sidney Alumni Sports Hall of Fame induction dinner and ceremony at the Elks Lodge on Sat., Sept. 29. Judging by the many comments and standing ovations, all shared great memories and more. The Elks put on another terrific buffet dinner and the Sports HOF committee provided more than just a ceremony for attend-ees’ enjoyment. There were two auctions – the usual memorabilia auction and a new “Shop Local, Keep it Local” auction, featuring products and services donated by area businesses. In the traditional auction, the culminating item was a matted and framed print of the 1997-1998 boys’ basketball team that spurred a spirited bidding war. Winner Mark Simmons had all members of the team sign the valued print. Another well-received addition to the evening was on de-mand custom Sports Hall of Fame T-shirt production by Jerri and Jim Shupperd. Hall of Fame Chair-man Greg Davie again emceed the event, reminding audience mem-bers to “embrace the moments and the memories.”

The night belonged to the Class of 2018 and Legacy Team, with informative and heartfelt speeches given by presenters and induct-ees. Larry Halbert paid tribute to Hall of Fame wrestling coach Tom Robertson before introducing Mark Payne, whose scholastic and collegiate accomplishments made him one of Sidney’s all-time best. Payne enjoyed telling several

stories of those days from his unique perspective. After Payne’s acceptance speech, he introduced his sister Peggy Payne Phelps, the next inductee and a pre-Title IX athlete and, later, a coach. She ded-icated her induction to “all those girls with me and before me who didn’t get the chance to play sports more in school.”

Sports Hall of Fame Induction Dinner and Ceremony

Hall of Fame coach Roxy Birdsall introduced Helen Harris and her many athletic and professional achieve-ments. Harris had the audience’s full attention as she recounted an upbringing unlike that of most of her peers. Her message of “you get what you earn” was powerful and the fact that she won all three major awards as a Sidney senior in 1987 is a testament to that mindset. Loraine Flyzik, former Sidney tennis and girls’ basketball coach introduced Amanda Haney Blette, a three-time state high jump champion and a dual-sport (track and bas-ketball) standout in college. Flyzik said Haney Blette showed “character through and through, even when no one was watching.” Haney Blette’s own speech discussing coach-es, teammates and family members was poignant. The final inductee, the youngest on the Hall of Fame roster was Katelyn Guerriere. Guerriere’s Sidney volleyball coach spoke of how Katelyn, renowned as a six-time state track champion in individual events, was a valuable asset in team sports, including her 2006 sectional champion volleyball team.

Throughout the weekend, all members of the New York State Class C Champion Warriors boys’ basketball team attended or were represented by family.Sidney’s 26-2 season, as well as the years leading up to it, were recounted by team spokesman Jason Dors-ey, who created many laughs and emotional moments. Coach Mike Brazee followed Dorsey and he, too,

shared behind-the scenes tales of what that season meant and still means. The Sidney Alumni Sports Hall of Fame thanks the sponsors, donors and all those associated with making the night a tremendous success. All funds raised during the event benefit cre-ation of a digital touchscreen display at the Sidney High School. This system will allow students, alumni and the community to learn

more about the Alumni Association while searching for alumni career help and awards and accomplishments such as the Wall of Fame and Sports Hall of Fame. Induction Weekend began Friday night with a halftime ceremony at the football game followed by the annual social at the VFW, sponsored by ACCO Brands. For more information, visit sidneyalumni.org. SIDNEY – Community groups came together when the Sidney Alumni Association and Sidney United Way presented the Sidney Center Improvement Group with $10,000 last Saturday [Sept. 29]. The money, some generated through SAA fundraising efforts and some grant-funded, will benefit Phase I and II of much-needed improvements at the Sidney Center Playground, SCIG president Michael Sellitti said. The park has been largely inoperable and inaccessible since suffering storm- and flood-related damage. “This will definitely help us move forward with restoring what’s there and installing new features,” Sellitti said, noting that new features will include stone benches, playground equipment, a community pavilion and walking trails. The group also plans to earmark fund-ing for repairs to existing swings and a basketball court, he said. Such a significant monetary contribu-tion, Sellitti said, helps SCIG meet its mission. “Our focus is on providing free community events, beauti-fication and improvement and water quality,” Sellitti said. “We’ve been working toward this for 10 years and the park is something the community expressed wanting to see improved. We’re fortunate to have real-ly good partnerships with the Sidney Alumni Associa-tion and United Way.” Sellitti said he expects work on Phase I and II to take place primarily through 2019, with Phase III, which includes construction and installation of a footbridge, slated for 2020. SCIG, Sellitti noted, includes roughly 20 members. Sidney Alumni Association President Doug Sheldon said, beyond prompting nostalgia among many of the group’s roughly 1,000 members, the playground project reinforces SCSAA’s focus. “Part of our mission is service to the alumni, school and community,” he said. “So we have an abiding interest in things that are good for the community.”“The Sidney Center Improvement Group came to us and asked if there was any way we could help, so we reached out to the alumni,” Sheldon added, noting that the process began in April. After mailers and the Association’s “Reflections” newsletter reached an estimated 3,000, Sheldon said, the response was hearty and immediate. “Essentially in a three-month period, the alumni caught the mes-sage and helped out,” he said. “There’s a strong attach-ment to this area.” The association offered a matching $2,500 to funds raised by the alumni, Sheldon said, for the SCSAA’s total $5,000 contribution. Howev-er, so strong was members’ response, he added, that the group has a remaining $7,500, which it plans to

apply to Phase III. Like Sheldon, Sidney United Way President Lorrie Roach said, the SCIG ’s playground revival was an easy cause to back. “We’re the Sidney United Way, but we support three communities—Ma-sonville, Sidney and Sidney Center,” she said. “And one of our focus areas is youth, so what better way to do that than provide for a facility that was destroyed and is now coming back to life? It’s a delightful result.” For more info. on the Sidney Alumni Association or to donate to the project, visit sidneyalumni.org.
