The New Arts and Innovation CentreBangor’s new arts and innovation centre- Pontio - will open its doors in 2014.Home to a mid-scale theatre, a studio theatre, a cinema, design and innovationcentre, Students’ Union, spacious lecture theatres, social learning spaces, bar, caféand more – this new building will reinvigorate the city centre.

Pontio will be a world class Artsand Innovation Centre set in the

heart of Bangor.

Menai Science Park Development

Bangor is leading on a major new project - the development of a Science Park on Anglesey.The Menai Science Park will be centred around the academic fields of clean technology, clean energy andsystems, which are aligned to the Anglesey Enterprise Zone, and which also provide collaborative opportunities for several University schools.

North West Wales, and particularly Anglesey, is well-placed to benefit from a combination of factors; theanticipated major investment in low-carbon energy projects and Enterprise Zone designation, and of coursea nearby University and its partner organisations.

New £30 Million Student VillageAn investment of over £30 million will be made to develop Bangor University’s St Mary’s residential siteinto a thriving student village by September 2015. The development will create a fantastic mix of sharedfacilities around a new ‘village square’ at the heart of the community.

It will also offer students the best in comfort and design with a cafe bar, shop, laundrette and sports andfitness facilities all on site.

Meet some of Bangor’s Notable AlumniDanny Boyle - Oscar WinnerDanny graduated from Bangorin 1978 with a degree in Englishand Drama. He directed theLondon 2012 Olympic openingceremony and his most successful project to date hasbeen ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ in2008, which won 8 Oscars including Best Director.

Frances Barber - ActressFrances graduated from Bangor in 1978 with a degreein Drama. She is a familiar facein theatre, television and filmand has worked in a string ofaward-winning productions forthe National Theatre and theRoyal Shakespeare Company.

Sir Robert Edwards - NobelPrize WinnerSir Robert Edwards, CBE, FRSgraduated from Bangor in 1951with a degree in Biology. Hewas awarded the 2010 NobelPrize in Physiology or Medicinefor the development of in vitrofertilization (IVF).

Eric Hepburn - British ConsulGeneral for the British EmbassyEric graduated from Bangor in1983 with a degree in Banking,Insurance and Finance. He is nowthe British Consul General for theBritish Embassy in WashingtonDC, USA.

Abdulqader Qader is from Iraq and studied atBangor University for a PhD in Electronic Engineering, he graduated in 2013. Abdulqader is now a lecturer in the Departmentof Physics at the University of Sulaimani in Iraq.

Isaac Okonu is from Nigeria and first studied at Bangor University for a BA Hons in Banking & Finance, he graduated in 1982. He also obtainedan MA in Banking & Finance and in 2011 he graduated with an MSc in International Banking &Development Finance. Isaac is now a lecturer atRivers State Polytechnic in Nigeria.

Research News Bangor Scientists contribute to efforts to reduce environmental destruction and poverty in MadagascarBangor University is leading research investigating how poverty is closelytied to the state of the environment in countries such as Madagascar. Theresearch project which aims to help understand the linkages betweenpoverty and the destruction of tropical rainforest brings together scientistsfrom Madagascar, the UK, the USA and the Netherlands.

Bio-economy innovation recognisedThe BEACON Bio-refining Centre of Excellence, an innovative research centre dedicated to developingindustrial products from plants to reduce reliance onfossil-based resources such as coal and gas, haswon the prestigious European Commission’s RegioStarts Award 2014.

Bangor University (where the work is led by the BioComposites Centre) and Swansea University contribute to this collaboration led by Aberystwyth University’s Institute of Biological, Environmentaland Rural Sciences (IBERs).

‘Food Dudes’ research to deliver school-meals uptakeA pioneering behaviour change programme developed at Bangor University is to become part of a major UK Government’s Department forEducation initiative to improve school meal uptake in junior schools andimprove healthy outcomes for children.

The evidence based ‘Food Dudes’ behaviour change programme has beenhighly successful in improving children’s diets in the UK, Ireland, Italy and

the USA.

The Food Dudes’ winning formula will now support the Government’sSchool Food Plan and help to ensure its success as part of the consortium with Children’s Food Trust.

The Bangor FundThe Development & Alumni Relations Office run twice yearly, student-led telethons which allow every alumnus theopportunity to give back to their University.

Thanks to the generous donations made by the alumni of Bangor University, the Bangor Fund received over£91,000 in 2013 which was distributed to 17 projects and initiatives across the University.

Here are some examples of some of the transformational awards granted this year

Bangor University’s Herbarium

The digitisation of Bangor University’s herbarium, a referencelibrary of plants, built up over many years and by a number ofcollectors. Bangor’s collection contains plants from all over theworld, amongst which can be found specimens dating back tothe 1700s. The digitisation project will create a database of theentire collection, offering high resolution images and any acquisition data available and make it available online.
