4 Jan Harm Pol and Diane Dalyrmple Pol—Class of ‘62
Jan Harm Pol was born and raised on a dairy
farm in the Netherlands, where he graduated
from the Dutch High School before he came
to Mayville as an exchange student at May-
ville High School during the 1961-1962 school
year.
After graduation from Mayville High School,
Jan returned to the Netherlands and enrolled
at the University of Utrecht to study veterinary
medicine. He returned to Michigan for a visit
in 1966 and then again in 1967, when he mar-
ried Diane Dalrymple, also a graduate of the
class of 1962. They moved back to the Neth-
erlands for 3 1/2 more years while Jan fin-
ished his degree. At the university they were
told that if they wanted to practice veterinary
medicine they would have to leave the Neth-
erlands to find a practice. So Jan and Diane
returned to Michigan.
In 1971, Jan joined a three-man, mixed ani-
mal practice in Harbor Beach, Michigan where
they lived and started their family of three chil-
dren. 10 years later, in 1981, they opened up
their own mixed animal practice in Weidman,
Michigan that grew to a multi-person
practice. They have lived and worked
in Weidman for 31 years. Jan is still
actively practicing veterinary medicine
and his wife, Diane is still managing the
office. Jan is a member of the local Li-
ons Club and is active in the Weidman
Baptist Church.
In addition to their veterinary practice,
Diane and Jan imported Frisian horses
from the Netherlands and have suc-
cessfully raised and bred them for 15
years. Jan has also enjoyed collecting extinct
or unusual cars though the years, and his
hobbies include traveling, water sports, deer
hunting, and reading.
Jan and Diane have three children—two
daughters. Kathlene and Diane and one son
Charles. Their children now live in Vermont,
Bay City, Michigan, and Los Angeles, Califor-
nia. They have two grandchildren, Adam and
Rachel.
Their son Charles was instrumental in develop-
ing a successful reality T.V. show for National
Geographic Wild called “The Incredible Dr.
Pol”, which focuses on Jan’s veterinary prac-
tice and their family, and has been aired on
the National Geographic Channel.

The oldest Alumnus… Mildred Lela Schott Tanner—107 7
At age 107,
Mildred “Lela”
Schott Tanner
was the oldest
living Alumnus
of Mayville High
School. Lela
was born on
May 4, 1905 in
Tuscola County
and died just
one month short
of her 108 birth-
day, on April 5,
2013. Lela was born the same day that
Theodore Roosevelt was inaugurated as the
26th President of the United States, beginning
his second term in office.
At the time of Lela’s birth, the average life
expectancy in the U.S. was 47 years; only 14
percent of the homes in the U.S. had a bath-
tub; just 8 percent of the homes had a tele-
phone, and more than 95 percent of all births
in the U.S. took place at home. A three-
minute phone call from Denver to New York
City cost eleven dollars; the average wage in
the U.S. was 22 cents per hour, and the av-
erage U.S. worker made between $200 and
$400 per year. Sugar was four cents a
pound; eggs were fourteen cents a dozen,
and coffee was fifteen cents a pound.
There were only 8,000 cars in the United
States; the maximum speed limit in most cit-
ies was 10 mph and only 144 miles of paved
roads existed. (Today in the United States,
there is reported to be 214 million motor vehi-
cles, and 3.9 million miles of paved roads--
enough to circle the Earth at the equator 157
times.) The tallest structure in the world in
1905 was the Eiffel Tower at 1,063 feet.
(Today the tallest man-made structure is
2,722 ft tall—the Burj Khalifa building in Du-
bai, United Arab Emirates.)
Lela graduated from Mayville High School in 1923, along with eighteen classmates-6 boys and 12 girls. She was ranked among the three highest achievers in her class, and given the honor of being Giftorian. The President’s Address was given by Alice Sed-don and the Valedictory was given by Berneice Baird.
“Such honors are not won in a day, but accomplished by concentrated effort and hours of work, perhaps while others have slept.”
1
The presentations by these three young ladies preceded the Senior Class Day Play, “Golden Days”, presented to the public at the Opera House in Mayville, on the evening of June 13, 1923. Admission was 25 cents for adults and 15 cents for children. Reserved seats were 35 cents.
“The musical farce brought forth roars of applause. That the High School of Mayville is one of its valuable assets, could not help but convince the most skeptical after having seen such a dis- play of talent as was manifested in the Opera House in the presentation of ‘Golden Days’, by the graduating class.” 5
The Baccalaureate sermon was delivered by Dr. Ford at the Baptist Church. Nineteen graduates sat in seats decorated with large bows made of crepe paper, in the class col-ors of pink and white. The Prelude and March was played by Miss Dwelly and Mr. Church, and Mrs. Edwin Fox sang a vocal solo and Mr. Church played a cornet solo.

Dave Vizard, a 1970 graduate of Mayville High
School and former News Editor of The Bay City
Times as well as Editor of True North Magazine,
made a series of special presentations in Febru-
ary, in the Thumb community.
Vizard, author of “A Formula for Murder” and co
-producer of “Chasing Jimmy!” a documentary
feature film, met with small groups of students at
Mayville High School during the day. Those
meetings emphasized the importance of writing,
editing, and communicating in today’s work
world.
Mr. Vizard presented “An Evening to Die For,” at
the Mayville Public Library. The event was open
to the public free of charge. Vizard spoke about
murder, what it takes to develop a novel, writing,
murder, editing, and independent publishing. He
also talked about what’s involved in creating a
delicious plot for a murder mystery.
“A Formula for Murder” is Vizard’s first novel.
The story line for the work of fiction is based in
Bay City and involves the community’s large ur-
ban school district, the former Bay Medical Cen-
ter as well as the local newspaper.
“The main character in my novel is reporter Nick
Steele, a name that is familiar to many throughout
the Mayville area,” Vizard said. “In fact, all of the
characters in the novel are based on people I have
known or worked with during the course of my 34-
year journalism career.”
During Vizard’s senior year at Mayville High
School, he wrote sports and feature stories for the
Mayville Monitor, the community’s local newspa-
per.
From there, Vizard served two years in the U.S.
Marine Corps before graduating from Wayne State
University with a B.A. degree in journalism. He
worked on a master’s degree in mass communica-
tion at Saginaw Valley State University.
Vizard worked at the Detroit News briefly as an
intern before being hired as the labor reporter for
The Flint Journal in 1977. He was promoted to
lifestyle editor in 1983.
In 1986, he was transferred and promoted to Metro
Editor of the Bay City Times. Vizard retired from
the newspaper when it went from daily to three-
days-a-week publication in 2008.
The novel is available at Mayville Public Library.
It can be checked out to read. For more informa-
tion and reviews of “A Formula for Murder, visit

Lela Tanner continued from page 7….

“During the thirty minute address of Dr. Ford, every member of the class were all attention, as they listened to the very practical advice from the speaker.” 3
After graduation Lela had planned to be-come a math teacher. She had even taken the two required exams and was planning on at-tending summer school for six weeks during the summer to qualify for teaching in the fall. Her plans were changed when she was re-cruited to attend Baker Business School in Flint. Lela began taking a Stenographic Course, then switched to Bookkeeping. While attending Baker, Lela lived at the YWCA, washing dishes two hours in the evening for her board. One day a girl who lived at the Y ask Lela to accompany her to a job interview because she did not know what to say. Lela had no trouble talking and so she was the one that ended up getting the job at E.V. Stone, a wholesale grocer, and meeting her future hus-band, Clinton Tanner. Lela married Clinton Tanner on August 17, 1927 in Bowling Green, Ohio. He preceded her in death on February 6, 1951. She was a long-time member of Third Avenue Baptist Church in Flint. She was also formerly employed as a bookkeeper for Mason & Fauth Insurance and then Jerry Fauth Insurance Agency, and she was also a member of the Flint Travel Club. Lela loved poetry, The Detroit Tigers and The Flint Journal. Surviving are two children: San-dra Shanks and George Tanner, seven grand-children and 14 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grand child.

The Old Schoolhouse
The old schoolhouse sits there, On the side of a dusty road.
A life time of memories, Of the children could be told.
Of learning to read and write, On a blackboard made of slate.
Or standing in the corner, For being a wee bit late.
Stories of cleaning the erasers, By smacking on the side of a brick wall.
Of having to wear hand me downs, Though they were a little bit small.
Of a stolen kiss from Suzie, Out in the play yard by the swing.
Of building snowmen in winter, Splashing through puddles in the spring.
Yes, the old schoolhouse sits there, Abandoned by the side of the dusty road.
Yet, a life time of memories by children, Are still being told.
~Ronald J. Curell~
Ronald J. Curell, graduate of Mayville High School
class of 1970, still resides in Mayville and is retired from
the Michigan National Guard and Michigan Carpenters
union. He has written a weekly column for the Mayville
Monitor for almost twenty years and for the Tuscola Ad-
vertiser for eighteen years, also has had articles and
poems in County Side, Backhome, County Line maga-
zines, various other national publications and newspa-
pers. He states; Mr. Robert Warren, a teacher from
Mayville was instrumental in installing his love for read-
ing and writing.

Secretary’s Annual Report ……………………………………… 12
Mayville Alumni Association Secretary’s Annual Report
May 1, 2013
Four days after our annual banquet held on June 9, 2012 members of our alumni association met to consider things that would make next year’s banquet even better. Subsequent meetings were held in September, October, November, January, February, March, April & May. Bernice McLane opened her home to us for each of these meetings.
Treasurer Bernice provided an updated Treasurer’s report at each meeting. John submitted a Secretary report each time until leaving for warmer weather late in January. It has been reported that meetings held after January were attended only by President Dan Dennis, Vice President Betty Harris & Treasurer Bernice McLane. No secretary’s reports were provided as the secretary was absent.
Other members attending during the year were Patti Vollweiler, Violet Mathews, Sandy Secord, Barbara Hahn, Kadee Raby, & Krystal LaBair. Election of officers was held @ the September meeting. President Dan, Secretary John, and Treasurer Bernice were reelected for the current year. Betty Harris was elected Vice President. Sherri Elenbaum, Kadee Raby, and Krystal La-Bair were selected as trustees. Violet Matthews decided that she had been a part of leading this organization long enough and tendered her resignation as part of the board. Kadee was se-lected to replace her on the Scholarship committee.
In addition to the normal process of doing everything necessary for the annual banquet a lot of work was put into designing an improved mailer. Sisters Vickie Shields & Patti Vollweiler have put countless hours into dragging us into the 21
st century. We are using the internet more &
more to reach out to our alumni all over the world. Any suggestions for improving the process are welcomed for consideration.
What would really be appreciated would be for some of our younger alumni (and not so younger) members to step forward and help with improving what needs to be done. Change is upon us as we deal with providing the annual “Historian” to all who want to receive it and informing all mem-bers with the new improved bulk mailed mailer.
Another endeavor we are attempting to deal with is in making changes to the process of select-ing recipients for our scholarships. We want to provide scholarships to graduates who are more in need than those who receive the big grants. We have found that our process is such that our scholarships are going to those same graduates that are receiving the big scholarships.
Next meeting on May 8th will be @ 6pm @ Bernice’s.
Respectfully submitted,
John Secord, Secretary

(McKenzie) Gohsman (who passed away earlier this year.) We enjoyed seeing Ed's
cool car and just had a great evening. –Sherri (Secord) Elenbaum

Keeping the Alumni Database updated is a daunting task. Postal addresses and email addresses seem to
change on a daily basis. In 2012 the Alumni Association began asking for you to “subscribe” to the annual HISTO-
RIAN paper to help defray the cost of printing and mailing. You can help us by making sure that the Alumni Associa-
tion has your current address—whether it be a postal address or an email address—in our files. It is equally impor-
tant that you let us know what your maiden name was when you graduated and what year you graduated. There are
currently only two times a year that the Alumni Association sends out correspondence—once in March—when the
Invitation/Reservation/Subscription form goes out announcing the Annual Alumni Banquet in June, and the second
mailing occurs in June—when the HISTORIAN is sent to those who subscribed. If you attend the Annual Alumni
Banquet you automatically receive a printed copy of the HISTORIAN. The correspondence in June is an email
letting the rest of the Alumni know they can view the latest HISTORIAN on line, and anyone who has paid for a sub-
scription receives a printed copy by mail. See the form on the back of this issue for more information.

If you attended the 2012 Alumni Banquet program,
you were introduced to the following family mem-
bers- Which includes 6 Class Presidents, 3 Vale-
dictorians and 5 Salutatorians. An awesome
achievement worth sharing!
Diane (Dalrymple) Pol was the Salutatorian of the
Class of 1962. Diane married Dr. Jan Pol, an ex-
change student from the Netherlands who at-
tended Mayville High School and graduated with
the Class of 1962. They currently own and oper-
ate a Veterinary Practice in Weidman, Michigan.
Diane is a cousin to Margaret (Steele) Fox, who
was the Valedictorian of the Class of 1962. Mar-
garet now works part-time at Welke's Tax & Book-
keeping Service. She is married to Glenn Fox.
Margaret's brother (Robert Steele), was president
of the Class of 1959. Robert served 12 years as a
member of the Mayville School Board and was the
Board President for 8 of those years. He is a dairy
farmer and farms approximately 1400 acres with
his two brothers Richard & Max.
Robert's wife, Sharon (Sarles) Steele, was the
President of the Class of 1962. Sharon is a past
employee of VG'S Supermarket in Caro, where
she worked in the bakery department decorating
cakes. At that time she was known as "The Cake
Lady".
Robert and Sharon's son, Jeffrey Steele, was
President of his class for 4 years, from 1978 to
1981. Jeff currently lives in Frankenmuth, MI and
is a Financial Advisor for MetLife Insurance.
Robert and Sharon's daughter, Jill (Steele)
Pape, was Salutatorian of the Class of 1983.
Jill currently has 22 years with the Mayville Com-
munity Schools, where she is a teacher at May-
ville Elementary School.
Jill's husband, David Pape, was Valedictorian
and President of the Class of 1983. David crop
farms about 3500 acres and raises beef cattle.
Robert and Sharon's daughter, Carrie (Steele)
Parker, was Valedictorian of the Class of 1989.
Carrie lives in Swartz Creek, Michigan and is a
Radiologist Technician at Genesys Hospital.
David and Jill's son, Jonathan Pape, was Saluta-
torian and Vice President of the Class of 2007.
Jonathan is married, and is an underwriter for
Quicken Loans.
David and Jill's daughter, Amy Pape, was Salu-
tatorian and Class President of the Class of
2009. Amy is a senior at Central Michigan Uni-
versity and plans to be an elementary teacher.
David and Jill's daughter, Kelli Pape, was Salu-
tatorian and Class President of the Class of
2012. Kelli is attending the University of Michi-
gan. Her major field of study is currently unde-
cided but she is leaning toward speech and lan-
guage pathology.
David and Jill Pape have also been the Host
