Pa IP Mission: The Pennsylvania Innocence Projectis a non-profit, public interest law firm dedicated toexonerating those who have been convicted of crimesthey did not commit and preventing innocent peoplefrom being convicted. That mission is coupled with atwofold educational mission: training law studentsand practicing lawyers to recognize and litigate validinnocence claims; and raising the consciousness oflawmakers and citizens about the systemic causes ofwrongful convictions and the ways to safeguardagainst them.

Position Overview: The Intake Attorney willmanage the Project’s case intake/screening processand supervise directly the more than one hundred lawstudent interns and pro bono lawyers engaged inreviewing cases submitted by incarceratedPennsylvanians. The Intake Attorney will beresponsible for auditing and reforming our currentintake system to ensure that we are screening casesas effectively and quickly as possible. While theIntake Attorney will be integral to the success of theoffice and the ultimate representation of our clients,this is a non-litigation position. The Intake Attorneywill not have their own caseload.

Qualifications: 1. Juris Doctor degree; preference given to barredattorneys and/or attorneys completing clerkships2. Excellent management and organization skills3. Strong written and verbal communication skills4. Sense of humor and willingness to be a teamplayer5. Familiarity with or willingness to learn casemanagement databases, including Salesforce and Clio6. Project management and/or volunteer trainingexperience preferred7. Dual language proficiency preferred

Specific Responsibilities:

1. Manage case review process: Acquaint law studentinterns and pro bono lawyers with the Project’sreview procedures and requirements; together withthe Project’s paralegal, assign case review projects tolegal interns and volunteer lawyers; monitor theprogress of the case reviews, help in removingroadblocks to the case review, and reassign cases ascircumstances warrant; review case reviewsubmissions for compliance with the Project’s

procedural requirements; provide reviewers withfeedback on their work; and recommend to the restof the legal staff that cases be closed or advanced formore in-depth review and/or investigation.

2. Conduct review of existing case intake/screeningprocess: Become familiar with the existing casescreening process and make recommendations forstreamlining it and ensuring the quality of the casereviews, reviewers, and evaluations; become familiarwith intake best practices used by other InnocenceNetwork organizations; audit intake process forinclusiveness to ensure that we are reaching as manypotential clients as possible.

3. Track data regarding the case review process:Keep data on all aspects of the case review process,including: how long it takes for cases to be reviewedin each stage of the process; the number of casesassigned or awaiting assignment at each stage; alisting of the cases awaiting assignment; the numberof cases closed or moved forward each year; and theproductivity of individual volunteer lawyers. Theintake attorney will need to update existingSalesforce database to better capture this informationand make recommendations for improvements to thedatabase.

4. Recruit and train volunteers: Arrange and conducttraining sessions in the identification of bona fideinnocence claims and the Project’s proceduralrequirements for law students and attorneys whowish to volunteer their services to conduct casereviews.

The Vermont Bar Foundation and the Vermont Accessto Justice Campaign are pleased to announce theavailability of a two-year Vermont Poverty LawFellowship (VPLF) beginning in August 2020. TheVPLF program is looking for outstanding graduatinglaw students and other new lawyers to help expandthe reach of Vermont’s existing legal servicesproviders. Staff Attorneys are expected to be aware of andapply/implement rules, regulations, and instructionsof Laurel Legal Services Inc. and its funding sources,as well as Pennsylvania substantive and proceduralrules. This includes proper case management(including case closings), documentation and filemaintenance. It also includes maintaining a workingknowledge of program priorities, client eligibilityrequirements, and various funders and reportingrequirements. Northwest Immigrant Rights Project (NWIRP) seeks a Spanish-speaking attorney, or law graduate who took the July 2019—orwill take the Winter 2020—bar examination, to provide directrepresentation, community outreach and education to individualsseeking legal assistance in a variety of immigration matters.

This position is based in NWIRP’s Granger Office, which is locatedin Granger, WA, a city of over 3,000 people located in a rural area25 miles southeast of Yakima. From this location, the office servesclients from across Central and Eastern Washington. The officehas a staff of ten and serves a client base consisting largely offarmworkers and their families.

The staff attorney will provide legal assistance to communitymembers through: (1) direct representation (2) individualconsultations; (3) self-help assistance in the form of communityworkshops and legal clinics; and (4) community education. Theattorney will focus on providing representation and legalassistance on a wide range of immigration cases including mattersinvolving removal proceedings, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status(SIJS) petitions and applicable state court custody matters,asylum applications, protections for survivors of domestic violenceand other crimes (including U visas), and citizenship applications.The staff attorney may also be assigned work relating to otherimmigration matters as needed.

Beginning annual salary is $64,201 for a licensed attorney with noexperience and is higher for attorneys with specific types ofexperience. For example, for someone with 10 years of non-profitimmigration attorney experience the annual salary would be$87,624; 20 years = $103,889.
