The Election

One of the fundamental areas of Kramer Levinrsquos Racial Justice Initiative is voting rights and many of our attorneys volunteered either to work a shift with the nonpartisan Election Protection Hotline or to be a nonpartisan poll monitor on Election Day to help ensure that everyone had equal access to the ballot box

Election Protectionrsquos National Voter Hotline organized through the Lawyersrsquo Committee for Civil Rights Under Law mobilized volunteers to staff phone banks to answer voter

questions and ensure fair voting practices throughout the country Questions ranged from where to vote to how to register to how to obtain absentee ballots mdash all issues further complicated in this election Election Protection is the nationrsquos largest nonpartisan voter assistance organization

Through our partnership with the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund volunteers signed up to be nonpartisan poll monitors at election sites in New York City and the surrounding areas on Election Day Volunteers signed up for a shift focusing on ensuring that everyone who should have been able to vote was not turned away and that conditions at the polling stations were as they should be

Kramer Levinrsquos Veterans Assistance Project

In honor of Veterans Day we wanted to highlight Kramer Levinrsquos Veterans Assistance Project part of the firmrsquos Racial Justice Initiative which helps disabled veterans apply for medical benefits after they have been previously denied The disabled veteran client base is approximately 75 persons of color and these individuals typically face a range of systemic challenges on top of negotiating often deeply difficult disability conditions The work entails (1) reviewing a veteranrsquos claims file and (2) writing a memo with a recommendation as to whether the veteran should file the claim We partner with the City Bar Justice Center in this important work Please reach out directly to Kent Eiler at City Bar if you are interested in participating in the project He can provide training materials and supervision

For those interested the City Bar Justice Center is holding a CLE program next week related to veterans work

NYC Bar Associationrsquos Serving More NYS Veterans Holistically Incorporating Veterans Law Into Your Practice CLE on Friday Nov 20 from 3 ndash 415 pm ET Learn about critical cultural competence matters of this diverse community and learn how lawyers serving this community can provide life-changing poverty prevention and health care access with targeted legal services Please click here to register and use priority code VETEM1 For more information or to view the program agenda please click here

Kramer Levin Establishes the Racial Justice Initiative

In response to and in support of the clear and continued outcry for racial and social justice Kramer Levin has established the Racial Justice Initiative This important initiative which will be led by our Pro Bono Committee will pursue pro bono opportunities focused on racial injustice and inequality including criminal justice reform which has been a long-standing focus of our pro bono work We remain committed to supporting actions that can effect real change

In conjunction with the Racial Justice Initiative in June the firm announced that it has joined the Law Firm Antiracism Alliance (LFAA) a membership currently featuring over 120 firms across the United States mdash and growing The LFAA was formed to leverage resources from the private bar in conjunction with legal service organizations to amplify the voices of communities and individuals oppressed by racism and to use the law as a vehicle for change that benefits

communities of color Together with our recently formed Racial Justice Initiative our membership in the LFAA underscores the firmrsquos commitment to promoting racial equality and working against discrimination in any form

The LFAA was profiled in an American Lawyer article found here
