The Ames Education Foundation annually raises money to help kids who are not able to afford all the school suppliesnecessary to attend classes. The fund is called Support Our Students (S.O.S.) and the campaign is held in the spring. This year’s event was titled the “Phantom Survivor Ames.” Jeff Johnson, President of Iowa State Alumni Association, andhis wife Peggy, are the hosts for this year’s non-event. The following explains in a fun way the reason for the non-event.

Phantom Survivor Ames

The Ames Education Foundation415 Stanton AvenueP.O. Box 1125Ames, IA 50014-1125

Your casting call performance was awesome! The feats were amazing! You’re the newest member of Phantom Survivor Ames this spring.

No challenges to complete just to win a full dinner. The April Fool’s competition doesn’t exist; everyone is a winner.

You’ll be happy to know that there are no crickets or worms to eat.Instead you’re providing young minds with school supplies - what a feat!

When your hosts, Peggy and Jeff Johnson, gather votes at tribal council,Survivors will be judged by the number of backpacks that we fill.

Don’t worry; no tribe members will be voted off of Ames IslandStarting fall with school supplies, all students will be smiling.

There’s no need to climb canyons or jump from cliff banks.Instead hear the sounds of Ames school children giving thanks!

Since there is no expense for the development of props, challenges, food, drink, or importing wild animals or bugs, your contribution will be used to help families purchase school supplies for their students at the Ames Community SchoolDistrict. Your gift qualifies for a tax deduction. On behalf of the students of Ames who will benefit by your accepting thischallenge, we thank you!

Last year’s campaign raised over $10,000. That money went to help families purchase items from the school supplylists posted in the fall. Having adequate school supplies is essential if a student is to make good progress in the class-room. Each school building in the district received funds so that teachers and principals, who are most closely associatedwith children and their families, could be the ones to help identify students who would benefit from the S.O.S. program.

The Phantom Survivor Ames event was kicked off on April Fool’s Day and gifts will be welcomed at any time. Pleasemake checks out to the Ames Education Foundation. For more information, contact Jean Kresse, Development Director,Ames Community School District (see below).

Mini-Grants for Ames High School ProjectsEach year the Ames Education Foundation awards mini-grants to faculty to provide special projects in the classroom.

Funded projects directly involve students, are innovative and incorporate matching funds or community resources. This year 36 proposals requesting over $16,000 were received. We were able to fund, either completely or partially,

25 projects, for a total of $8,650. Ames High School received awards for the following mini-grants:DVD in the Classroom (Kristi Minion) - The project brought video technology into the classroom by providing a DVD

system. The AHS Alumni Association provided an additional $400 funding to purchase the entire system.Touring the Universe Through Binoculars (DeAnna Tibben) - Funds were used to purchase copies of the Touring

the Universe Through Binoculars, a guide to help students observe the moon, planets, and stellar objects.Moving Ames High Debate & Forensics to Excellence (Aiddy Phomvisay) - Support existing programming by

providing training materials to the thirty new students on the Ames High Debate Team.Dictionary Training (Anne Marie Kern & Shaeley Santiago) - The funds helped to purchase and integrate a class set

of English dictionaries to support the learning of words in a more comprehensible fashion for English Language Learners.

There have been 22,314 gradu-ates of AHS from 1875 through 2003.Our records show only 2.25% miss-ing. Many of those are from countriesthat have no diplomatic relations withthe United States. Also, I’ve recentlylocated 50-75 grads that will furtherreduce that percentage. For yearsI’ve used switchboard.com and theSocial Security Death Index (SSDI) tofind lost alumni. Recently I’ve discov-ered MyFamily.com, a subscriptionservice that is relatively cheap andoften lists mom and dad as well as themissing graduate. Our database listsparents’ names and birthdates, whichare invaluable in the research.

What stymies us is that we havemaiden names for female graduatesand little else. Does anyone know away to track down something aboutthese graduates knowing only themaiden name? When I was lookingfor another source, I found one thatlisted the month and year of birth withthe name I was seeking. Doesanyone know of a source like that? Ihave lost track of it.

We have over 4000 names in ourdatabase for which the address is incare of (%) someone. Many of thosenames are fairly recent graduates. We’d like a current address for thesepeople. You may send the updatedaddress to the return address on thisnewsletter, FAX it to me at 515 232-7746, or e-mail it to me [email protected]. Pleaseuse any of these three ways to contactme on other matters as well.

We’ve recently located a lostteacher, Virginia Batstone, who startedat Ames High in the fall of 1952. Shemarried a Welch Junior High teacherand is living in California. Thanks toNancy (Wallace) Burkhart ’55 forhelping on that one. And we thinkwe’ve finally located Ren Ruggless’62. Another on our most wanted list,Colleen Grisham ’54 has turned updeceased. Three more on that list stillelude us, Carey Poole ’59, BruceBatman ’60 and Robert Caquelin ’64.If you can help us, we’d like to hearfrom you.

Scholarship Fund in memory of Father Thomas J. Maney‘43, Quito, Ecuador, from Dorothy P. and Paul C. Vanceand all of the class of 1943.

Father Tom died in Ecuador, South America, on April22, 2004.

Tommy, as he was affectionately called, will be greatlymissed by his family and the many, many friends he hadworldwide. I personally feel that a large part of my life wentwith him. We were the best of buddies since we attendedthe Iowa State University nursery school together at threeyears of age.

We were in scouting together, attaining the rank ofEagle Scout. I would never had accomplished that feathad it not been for the encouragement and prodding of mybuddy, Tommy. When our Scout Master presented us withour Eagle Scout certificates, he introduced us by sayingthat “Tommy and Paul are so close to each other in theirfriendship that when Tommy itches, Paul scratches.”

We enlisted in the Army Air Corps together in 1943.We had aspirations of serving together, but, of course, thatwas an unrealistic goal. Tommy served in combat in WWIIas a navigator on a B-29 based in Tinian-Saipan. I was abombardier on a B-24 in New Guinea and the PhilippineIslands.

Tom devoted his adult life as an ordained priest servingthe spiritual needs of his beloved parishioners and friendsin South America - Columbia, Chile and most recently,Ecuador, as a Maryknoll priest.

At Ames High School, Tom excelled as a student andparticipant in many activities, including drama and athletics. In track, he was an outstanding distance runner. The half-mile (as it was called then) was his main event, and atwhich he enjoyed great success.

Tommy leaves us with a legacy of loving service to hisfellow man. We are blessed to have known him and tohave a share of his love. The world is significantly betterand richer because of his presence among us. We thankGod, who he so ably served, for giving us Tom for almost79 years.

for my dad, Marv Adams. He went to school in Ames whenhe was little and my grandpa was a minister in the town, but they ended up moving to Michigan and he was inter-ested to see how his friends turned out. My dad wasextremely happy and said it was one of the best gifts hehad ever received. I appreciate all of your help and all theresponses that I got from other alumni.

Take Care,Michelle Adams

Hi, AHS alums,As usual, enjoyed the newsletter. Nice tribute to Bob

Bartley, but he would be shocked to see this misuse of theword alumnus!

“2003 Distinguished Alumni Named”Rather than “alumni” it should be “alumnus”.

John Van Der Linden ‘35--------------------------------------------------------------

Dear AHSAA,I have enjoyed keeping up with the Alumni newsletter

and those that I remember. It has been a long time sinceI’ve been in Ames or the surrounding area since most ofmy military and other jobs were on the coasts. My last andonly high school reunion was in 1981, I think. Time flieswhen you’re having fun. After three retirements, I think thisis it.

In going through old papers and files, I found thispicture of “the guys”. Note that it was taken by SteveWells. Those in the picture, L to R, are Larry Caldwell,Kent Woodworth (with black hair), Bob Ellis and JimVandecar all class of ‘56.

Hope all is well in Ames,Warren Benson ‘56
