Mary Jo and Sandy Adams have been mar-ried 40 years, and they have University High School—and Stroud Auditorium—to thank for helping bring them together.
“We dated in high school and sat next to each other in Stroud for study hall,” said Mary Jo Adams, ’70. “I have fond memories of being in study hall with my now-husband.”
That’s why the couple decided to be among U-High alumni who donate seats to Stroud.
“University High School is near and dear to my heart. I wanted to do some-thing for the school,” she said.
And she is not alone in leaving a legacy in the newly renovated U-High audito-rium, which reopened in April 2011 after a 20-month makeover. More than 467 seats have been purchased through the success-ful Seat Campaign (Seats That Recognize Our Unforgettable Donors). A seat may be designated by purchasing a nameplate for $500.
Herb and Heidi Semmler Todd, 1983 graduates, purchased four seats, two for themselves and two for their children, also U-High grads.
“This was a way to give back and Todd’s employer matches our gift so we were able to double our contribution,” she said. “We both had a good experience there.”
She also appreciated the rich history of fine arts at U-High. “Theater has always been good at U-High,” she said. “The the-ater is beautiful.”
Joan Sears Sloneker, a 1952 graduate, agreed.
“It’s a marvelous venue. The renova-tion was such a wonderful project for the school,” she said.
The auditorium wasn’t available when she worked backstage on theater pro-ductions. Students had to use Capen Auditorium.
As a “proud and happy” graduate of University High, Sloneker said she wanted to do something for the school, and mak-
ing a donation for a Stroud seat was a perfect fit. Four of the seats that she spon-sored were dedicated to honor her children who attended U-High. Sloneker also paid tribute to influential teachers by naming several seats in their honor.
Emmy Bates ’65 had Ruth Stroud as a teacher for senior English. Stroud, for whom the auditorium was named, was responsible for saving and storing the replica plaster reliefs of the Elgin Marbles, which were a gift from two U-High classes in the early 1900s and now hang in the auditorium.
“We learned a lot of Shakespeare in Stroud’s class,” Bates said.
When the school offered the opportu-nity to fund seats in the auditorium, she said it just felt like the right thing to do. She and her sister, Debbie Bates ’67, each donated a seat in honor of all their fam-ily members who also graduated from the school.
Charles Beeler ’46, also had Stroud as an English teacher and his wife, Charlotte ’46 was in her homeroom. “We’ve always been such good friends of the University,” she said. “We met many wonderful friends there, friends we still have.”
The couple’s daughter graduated from U-High and their son attended two years.

Seats still availableTo date the Seat Campaign has raised more than $233,000 with the purchase of nameplates for 467 of the total 725 seats by proud University High School alumni, families, and friends. There are only 258 seats left available for inscribed nameplates, a once in lifetime opportunity to honor someone and support the ongoing facility needs of Stroud Auditorium at the same time. Seat nameplates are available for a donation of $500 per seat, and pledges of $500 or more may be paid over a two-year period. Also, gifts may be charged to a credit card. Those who work for a match-ing gift company can donate $250 with a company match to designate a seat name-plate.
Donors have the opportunity to honor someone with a two-line inscription on the nameplate. The seats are a great way to pay tribute to a recent or future gradu-ate, commemorate a loved one, or leave a personal mark on University High School. A number of our alumni and friends have supported this campaign with donations for multiple seat nameplates.

President’s letterBy Marcy Benjamin Richardson ’94
University High School has many alumni who receive recognition on a local, nation-al, or even international level. I’m always amazed at the number of U-High gradu-ates I read about in our newsletter, The Pioneer, who achieve incredible feats. This past fall I attended the Awards Assembly to listen to alumni who have made their own mark in the world. In honor of their accomplishments, University High School recognized them with various alumni awards. Their stories are all inspiring yet very diverse. The common thread in each is the impact that University High School had in helping to make them the people they are today. They had stories of University High School teachers, Pioneer friends, and events that helped to shape their lives. I remember thinking, “Wow, these alumni are so talented and are so successful in doing the things they enjoy.” The Pioneers being celebrated ranged from an internationally known jazz musi-cian to a local hero that has served count-less children and families in our Central Illinois area.
These awards recipients are inspir-ing and give us pause to think about our own successes. Success may not mean the same to everyone, but it is defined as the achievement of something. That “something” varies from person to person depending on the passions and talents we each possess. However, all successes are meaningful in some way. Our passions matter to us and can all contribute to a greater good. If I had not gone to the annual assembly I may not have known about the successes of the awards recipi-ents. There are numerous other accom-plished alumni that we have yet to hear about.
When I think about my own passions, I reflect on my role as a mom, wife, and teacher. My passions have led to success. I stress each and every day to my children that even the littlest things they do on a daily basis can make a huge difference in their own lives as well as the lives of others. I think about my job as a teacher and the impact I make in the lives of 20 some second-graders. It may not seem like it in the everyday chaos and sometimes
ordinary routine of my life, but I do make a difference. Something I do or say may have an extraordinary impact on my chil-dren, my husband, a friend, one of my second-graders, or even a stranger. The affect I have on that person can ultimately change the course of his or her life in some way.
Since the awards assembly, I have thought about the countless alumni that do amazing things and prove to be suc-cessful each day. Sometimes these people are not even aware of the impact they are making in their own “corner of the world.” Unfortunately, as much as it is desired, not everyone can be recognized in the form of an award. However, our successes and accomplishments do matter and are recognized in other ways even if at times we don’t realize it. U-High teachers taught us to be independent thinkers with the desire to make a difference in our own unique way. I believe we are all continuing to do that every day.
In the recent edition of The Pioneer, the back page read, “STATE your Passion. STATE your Pride.” U-High has unbeliev-able alumni with strong passions. Let’s take the time to celebrate all of the accom-plishments of the incredible University High School alumni. U-High is proud of them all! Thanks for making a difference.
Support our troopsThank you to all of our University High School alumni who are bravely serving in the armed forces during Operation Enduring Freedom.

“We had ample reason to donate,” Charlotte Beeler said. The couple, married for 63 years, met at U-High.
Jason and Jessica Chambers, class of 1989, also met at the school. “I just loved U-High and so did Jason,” Jessica (Sparks) Chambers said. “It’s just such a good school.”
Donating seats to the auditorium proj-ect was a way to give back, she said. They purchased four seats: two for themselves and two for their children, whom they also hope will become U-High grads. Jason said the donation not only recognizes the couple’s past, but their future.
Andrew Golomb ’97 said his experience at U-High helped mold his future.
“My sister (Janeen Moore ’94) and I had a very good experience at U-High. It’s paid dividends hands over fist,” he said.
Golomb said he usually donates to the school each year. The fundraiser for the Stroud seats was an easy choice.“It helped them reach their goal,” he said.
While Howard Kloepper ’67 only attended U-High one year, his mother, two sisters, and brothers all attended the lab schools.
“I was very pleased with my experience,” he said.
Kloepper said there was no comparison between U-High and the larger, crowded, and impersonal high school he attended before. He applauded U-High for its faculty, course selection, and whole atmo-sphere.
“I felt very, very elevated about U-High,” he said. “It merited some kind of recognition and I thought, here is the opportunity.”

Jeff Hill assumed the role of superintendent of the labora-tory schools at Illinois State University on July 1, 2012. After a conducting a national search, the selection com-mittee brought candidates to campus for a multi-day inter-view process. Hill has been the principal of University High school for seven years. He earned his doctorate degree from Illinois State University and has focused his professional experiences on
improving student achievement through the development of teacher leadership and the inte-gration of technology. Besides overseeing U-High, Hill will be also responsible for the works and undertakings at Thomas Metcalf Laboratory School.
The U-High principal posi-tion for the 2012–2013 school year will not be filled. Andrea
Markert will continue in her current role as assistant principal and assume some
additional duties typically performed by the principal. Current teacher and assistant activities director Steve Evans has been hired to fill in as an interim administra-tor to assist Markert. Evans has a master’s degree in educational administration and a Type 75 certification. In addition, Hill will continue to provide support in the areas of budget, alumni, personnel, teacher educa-tion, and research.
Hill replaces Robert “Bob” Dean, who led the laboratory schools for the last 26 years.

When Dan Riddle ’58 was in ninth grade at Irving School in Bloomington, his dad owned a family business in Normal. One of his dad’s regular customers at the ser-vice station was Coach Burt O’Connor. O’Connor and Dan often spoke about their love of football and built up cama-raderie. O’Connor told Dan to consider applying to U-High because of its smaller class size and what it could offer to him. In addition, Dan’s uncle, Sam Ensminger, graduated from U-High in 1924 so he knew about its reputation. So he applied and was accepted starting his sophomore year and he immediately noticed the dif-ference.
“We were treated like adults unlike other high schools which had closed lunch hours. At U-High, it was the responsibil-ity of the student to get from one building to another for class and not all instruc-tors reminded us of our homework/study assignments,” recalls Dan. “We had excel-lent teachers…professors, really, because they all taught at the university level as well. Our smaller class sizes made for a creative environment that allowed for individual development and instilled great work ethics.”
The year after Dan graduated his young-er brother, David ’63, started at U-High. David went on to graduate from Illinois State and worked in the accounting depart-ment there. Then he took the position of comptroller at Eastern Illinois University where he retired in 2000. He still lives in Charleston with his wife, Linda. They have one son, Mark.
Dan recalled that during his senior year he was a feature writer for the Clarionette, “I had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Jennie Whitten about her 40th anniversary at Illinois State. Whitten was head of the Foreign Language Department from 1934 to 1959. I guess that was the start of my newspaper career and I didn’t know it.”
Dan worked at the Pantagraph for 27 years, Worcester Telegram & Gazette, and retired from The New York Times in 2000. Dan and his wife, Carolyn “Tudy,” now live in Lake Placid, Florida. They are parents to Steve ’80, who is employed by Raven Industries, Applied Technology Division as a sales representative in preci-sion products for agriculture and lives in Bloomington with his wife, Patty. Steve’s two daughters are Jenn Riddle Carrel ’02 and Becky Riddle ’06. Dan’s niece, Kymberly Schuth Lauritson, also gradu-
ated from U-High in 1987. Kym lives in Towanda with her husband and two daughters.
Jenn served as president of the University High School Alumni Association in 2010–2011. Currently, Jenn is employed at Flat Top Grill and is the mother to two daughters. Becky, who is fluent in Spanish, works at Afni in the Spanish Department. Becky’s interest in foreign language was influenced by her classes at U-High and a class trip to Costa Rica. Becky is the mother of a daughter and son. Both
Jenn and Becky hope that their four chil-dren will continue the family legacy and one day become Pioneers too.

Congratulations to senior wrestlers Mitchell Dearing and Evan Weaver for advancing to the IHSA State Wrestling Tourney. The first round matches were broadcast through the IHSA website. Dearing wrestled at 138 lbs. followed by Weaver at 145 lbs. They won their preliminary rounds and continued in the tournament in their weight class. Weaver finished the state tournament with a forth place finish at the Assembly Hall. Weaver was also named to the Pantagraph All-Area Wrestling Team. This is the third time he has been selected. This year selec-tion was based on being the Class 1A state runner-up with a 40-3 record.
In February, the U-High cheerleading squad competed in the 28th Annual Illinois Cheerleading Coaches Association State Championships. U-High competed with more than 30 other teams in the Medium Varsity Division. U-High took
home top honors in this division, win-ning first place. An all-girl stunt group comprised of five U-High cheerleaders competed and won third place. Seniors Hannah Hotzel and Deanna Olson were selected for the All-State Cheer Team. Seniors Jessica Elliott and Olson were recognized as senior scholar athletes, car-rying a 3.5 or greater GPA for the past six semesters. Olson was also an ICCA state scholarship finalist, receiving the second highest prize of $3,000.
March 6, 2012 will be a day not soon forgotten at U-High. After battling back from a significant deficit, the Pioneers ended the Super-Sectional boys basket-ball match against Teutopolis with a one-point lead—a small margin, but enough to claim a major victory. With the entire team hustling in the fourth quarter, the team claimed the championship with a 60-59 victory. This win propelled them on to the state tournament at the Peoria Civic Center and put them in the Elite Eight for the first time since 1999. At the state tournament, the Pioneers faced Rockford Lutheran in the first round and won 55-52. In the second round, they faced Breese Central, a tough opponent with only one loss this season. At the end of the night, Breese won 53-47. The team, coaches, and administration were hon-ored in an awards presentation after the game. Second place in the Class 2A state tournament was a great accomplishment! Sophomore Keita Bates-Diop was selected for the first team on the Associated Press Class 2A boys basketball team on Tuesday. Bates-Diop led the Pioneers in scoring at the Super-Sectional game with 16 points and currently has a 14.5 point scoring average. He was also selected for the first team on the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Class 1A-2A all state teams.
The Illinois Basketball Coaches Association selected U-High basketball Coach Bob Fitzgerald as the IBCA District Boys’ Class1A/2A High School Coach of the Year in our district. He was honored at the 40th Annual Hall of Fame Induction Dinner at Illinois State University in April.

University High School sophomore Alexander Su was named an Intel International Science and Engineering Fair 2012 Finalist and competed in Pittsburgh May 13–18. He won the Southern Illinois Region Science and Engineering Fair held at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville on March 17. Among the awards Su received at the regional science fair were the Best of Category in Physics and Applied Math, first place in the Paper Competition, and the Research Challenge Championship. Su has also advanced to the State Science and Engineering Fair. He has been advised by El-Zanati of the Illinois State University mathematics department.
At the end of March, junior Morgan Murphy attended the 62nd Illinois-Eastern Iowa Key Club District Convention, serving as the convention chair. More than 600 Key Club members from 50 schools around Illinois and Iowa were in attendance. Morgan ran against candidates competing in several caucuses and the House of Delegates, where she was elected District Governor. Murphy
will be in charge of all 200 Key Clubs that are in the Illinois-Eastern Iowa District. Her new position includes traveling, advising, running board meetings and the district. In preparation for her new role, she traveled to Washington, D.C. in May for training.
The U-High thespians were in rare form at their spring production of The Drowsy Chaperone. The show produced big laughs throughout in what proved to be a hilari-ous musical within a play. Congratulations to cast and crew on their stellar perfor-mances. Suzie Thetard was honored on her amazing career as U-High theater director. She is stepping aside and will be mentoring our new theatre director, Ben Webb. U-High faculty members Chris Corpus and Jason Landes, who lent their talents in directing vocals and instrumen-tals, were also recognized for their hard work in making the show a success.
At the end of the school year, U-High will say goodbye to two longtime faculty members. Carol Benson will retire from U-High after more than 30 years in the math department. For the last several
years, she has also been an instructor in the Illinois State math department, teaching courses related to math educa-tion. Benson has a unique educational background in that she has completed two doctorate degrees. She has also been involved with the promotion and recruit-ment of women in math and science. We gratefully thank Benson for her years of service to U-High and our students. Dixie Lewis, the Learning Center direc-tor, will also be retiring at the end of the year. She will be returning in the fall on a part-time basis to assist with the transi-tion over the next year to a new director. A longtime member of our faculty, Lewis taught psychology and sociology for many years before assuming leadership of the Learning Center. As the director, she has coordinated tutors for our students based on their needs, been directly involved with the Student Assistance Program, and worked with home-bound students, along with a whole lot more. We sincerely appreciate her dedication to U-High.

The name of their new company is Illusion Eyewear.
Redbird track and field star, Tim Glover ’09, won his second NCAA Division I jav-elin title in June. Glover’s throw of 268 feet broke the Illinois State University record and narrowly missed the Olympic “A” qualifying standard by a mere 12 inches. Glover is known as “Tiny Tim” because at the height of 5 foot 10 inches and 217 pounds, he is the smallest elite thrower in the U.S. “It’s kind of cool being the small-est kid out there,” he said. “You want to prove yourself and throw the farthest. Some people call me the smallest man with the biggest arm.”

Archival yearbooks needed Would anyone be willing to donate copies of The Clarion yearbooks for the years of 1968, 1970, and 1982? It has come the attention of the U-High Alumni Association that these years are now missing from our collection.
We will happily accept yearbooks from any other year as well. Please help us preserve a part of our his-tory. If you come across an extra Clarion, please pass it on to the UHSAA. There are many anxious alumni wanting to have a yearbook from their era.

To donate or purchase yearbooks, please contact the University High School Alumni Association at [email protected] or contact Barbara Lichty Blunk ’53, alumni relations coordinator, at (309) 452-2414 or [email protected]. Donations can also be left at the school library.

The Legacy Society for the Illinois State Laboratory Schools The Legacy Society for the Illinois State University Laboratory Schools provides recognition and appreciation for those persons who have 1) established a planned gift in support of the laboratory schools, University High School, and/or Thomas Metcalf School, or 2) reach a level of $10,000 or more in cumulative giving in support of the laboratory schools, University High School, and/or Thomas Metcalf School. Membership is lifetime.
All donors (individuals, couples, families, corporations, etc.) recognized through The Legacy Society may have their names permanently displayed on plaques placed in prominent locations at both University High School and Thomas Metcalf School. Charter Members of The Legacy Society—the first 100—are noted as such on the plaques. Donors preferring to be listed as anonymous may request such designation.
The list above is of Charter Members as of May 31, 2012: (names in bold have become Charter Members since the Spring 2012 issue of The Pioneer)
We encourage those of you interested in The Legacy Society to discuss with us possible areas of designation. Membership in the society is permanent and is acknowledged by both the Laboratory Schools and Illinois State University. Even though donors make their contribu-tion to the Illinois State University Foundation, they may rest assured that 100 percent of their donation will be designated for Thomas Metcalf School and/or University High School, as individually desired.
For more information about The Legacy Society, please contact, Gail A. Lamb, senior director of development at (309) 438-2903 or [email protected]. If you prefer, have your attorney or financial planner contact Lamb via the above, or at Campus Box 3060, Alumni Center, Illinois State University, Normal, IL 61790.

Why we joined the Legacy Society for the Laboratory Schools
Searching for a proper way to honor the memory of my parents, Al and Nancy Eckert, was not a difficult task. Growing up in my family we all proudly supported the Lab Schools. Metcalf and U-High were like a second home to me and my five siblings. Mom tirelessly volunteered her kindness
and time. Dad lived and breathed Pioneer Green and Gold. It was a privilege to receive my education at the Lab Schools, taught by the best and most dedicated teachers. Jeff and I continued the family legacy with both of our children graduating from U-High. Daughter Grace carries on another tradi-
tion, as a high school math teacher, just like Grandpa Albert. Thank you Mom and Dad, for the opportunity.
