SHELL LAUNCHES SMARTER ENERGY COLLABORATIONHELPING FURTHER DEVELOP MORE AND CLEANER ENERGY SOLUTIONS FOR COMMUNITIES

The Shell #makethefuture campaign is highlighting the need for greater global collaboration to create more and cleaner energy solutions, by helping to bring to life innovations from six smart energy start-ups.

Technologies from the bright energy businesses will be showcased in Rio de Janeiro’s Santa Marta community in September, before they were installed in communities that require urgent access to cleaner energy.

The entrepreneurs’ innovations were brought together in Santa Marta as it is benefitting from an installation by Insolar, a solar energy start-up that is one of the featured entrepreneurs being supported by Shell.

Insolar is fitting photovoltaic panels to some of Santa Marta’s most widely used community centres, including a samba school and crèche, which are central to the life of the community’s 8,000 residents.

Young Brazilian entrepreneur Henrique Drumond who founded Insolar sees the project as a significant step in his mission to help to bring cleaner energy to Brazil, where solar accounts for only 0.02 per cent of the energy mix, with only 1,731 small-scale solar systems connected to its grid – despite more than 2,000 hours of sunlight blazing on the country each year.

In Rio alone, an estimated 1.4 million residents of the city’s 763 favelas are affected by rising energy prices and unreliable power supply.

The Insolar installation is expected to generate the equivalent of 185,000 days of free, clean power over the lifetime of the solar panels.

Showcasing bright energy technologies in Rio kick-started a global ‘energy relay’ to show collaboration with leading energy entrepreneurs is vital to help to secure a bright energy future, and to invite the world to support and participate in the creation of smart energy solutions.

The innovations displayed in Santa Marta alongside Insolar include:

n bio-bean – which explores how to reduce the UK’s CO2 emissions from transport by turning coffee dregs into a sustainable transport fuel;

n Capture Mobility – demonstrates how roadside turbulence from cars and trucks can generate clean power for local communities;

n GravityLight – improves health and wellbeing in energy deprived communities by using a simple pulley and weight system to generate electricity;

n MotionECO – uses waste cooking oil to help to create a market for renewable diesel in China (in transport, public services and logistics) and discourage the harmful reuse of cooking oil, and

n Pavegen – converts power from footsteps into renewable energy that can power a community.

Joining the #makethefuture movement as ambassadors are six award-winning international musicians: Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson, Brazilian singer Luan Santana, British performer Pixie Lott, American DJ/Producer Steve Aoki, China’s pop star Tan WeiWei and Nigerian idol Yemi Alade.

The artists are uniting with the energy entrepreneurs and Shell to help shine a light on the worldwide need for access to more and cleaner energy.

A new interactive music video will also showcase each of the smart energy innovations.

Shell and the ambassadors are inviting people to show support for the Insolar project to help bring solar power to communities and homes in Brazil. You can sign the pledge by visiting www.shell.com/showyoursupport.

Proceeds from sales of Luan Santana’s latest DVD, 1977, will go towards the Insolar project to help to fund the installation of more solar panels in low-income communities.

Royal Dutch Shell Chief Executive Ben van Beurden said: “I’m personally inspired by the ingenuity of these innovators, and the ambition to forge a brighter energy future for our planet. Collaboration

and entrepreneurialism are essential to finding energy solutions that can enable development and a decent way of life for people across the world while reducing carbon dioxide emissions. These values are central to our #makethefuture campaign to help achieve a better energy future together.”

Insolar director Henrique Drumond said: “My vision was to create a social enterprise that provides communities with a cleaner source of energy. On my journey through the Shell programmes that support entrepreneurs, including Shell Iniciativa Jovem, and the Accelerator, the company has always supported this vision. I am thrilled to see this collaboration brought to life in Rio. We hope Santa Marta will be an inspiration to other bright minds and unlock more answers to tomorrow’s energy challenges in communities, cities and countries around the world.”

Next, #makethefuture will move on to Kenya, where Shell is working with GravityLight – a UK-based start-up that has developed a gravity-powered lamp designed to improve health and wellness across Kenya by bringing clean, affordable light to low income homes.

Six award-winning international musicians have collaborated with six start-ups and Shell to highlight a worldwide support of more and cleaner energy.

THE BEST DAY OF YOUR LIFE?At Shell, we believe collaboration is one way to help create more and cleaner energy.

You can get involved in the #makethefuture campaign by signing our pledge to support the six energy entrepreneurs.

WHERE THE BUFFALO ROAMSHELL NAMED CORPORATE PARTNER OF THE YEAR

Shell retiree Roger Shakely attended the annual fund-raising dinner of the Friends of the Front Range Wildlife Refuges (FFRWR). On behalf of Shell, he accepted their Corporate Partner of the Year award for “many years of generous support.” Roger is a lifetime member of FFRWR, which supports and promotes restoration and conservation, and programs for the public at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, he said:

I’m thrilled by FFRWR’s recognition of Shell, and by the enhancements FFRWR have provided to the National Wildlife Refuge through funds provided by Shell and other sources. “Shell has played a pivotal role in restoring the site and returning it to the community as a refuge,” said Kate Kramer, president of the Friends of the Front Range Wildlife Refuges. “When I look across the prairie toward the

mountains, I feel grateful that this beautiful wildlife refuge will be here for generations of Americans to enjoy.”

Roger retired from Shell in 2013 after a 33-year career, most recently as a Project Manager in the Soil and Groundwater group that oversees clean-up of contaminated sites on behalf of Shell’s Post-Closing Rights and Obligations business unit.

The Rocky Mountain Arsenal (RMA) is northwest of Denver, Colorado. It was opened by the US Army during WWII, as a chemical weapons manufacturing facility. After the war, the US leased out portions of the property. Shell bought a company that was manufacturing agricultural chemicals on the site. In 1987, RMA was added to the National Priorities List of federal Superfund sites. The surface clean-up is complete. The US Army and Shell continue to manage groundwater treatment and waste containment areas at RMA under regulatory oversight by the US EPA, the Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment, and the Tri-County Health Department.

In 1986, a pair of bald eagles were found to be nesting on site, leading to appreciation

of the site’s potential. An act was passed by Congress establishing the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge. As portions of the site were cleaned up, they were transferred to the Fish and Wildlife Service of the US Department of Interior to manage as a refuge.

The 15,000-acre RMA National Wildlife Refuge is now the home of more than 300 species, including bald eagles, mule and white-tailed deer, burrowing owls and black-footed ferrets, and a herd of American Bison. The lands surrounding the site are now developed in industrial, commercial and residential use, thereby increasing the value of the refuge as an urban park. The refuge now offers 10 miles of hiking trails, catch-and-release fishing, an auto-tour route, and guided programs enjoyed by more than 300,000 visitors per year.

Roger’s favorite recollection, “the Saturday morning Fish and Wildlife reintroduced genetically pure bison back onto the refuge. Watching the bison circle for a moment and then all of them take off in a thundering run across the refuge was an incredible moment.”

Edwin Laiche (’03) has just finished replicating a 1965 Model top fuel dragster. He was part of the team that ran this original car in the late 60’s and early 70’s and has spent 5 years finding all of the vintage parts to build a dragster that is about 98% authentic. He now tours the car with his grandson.

Hermie Tolerba (Houston, ’07) has created his own “retirement activity center” with a woodworking shop in his Sugar Land garage. He even has a woodworking blog, http://easywoodworking-tolerba.blogspot.com/, that explains the various projects he is working on for his fellow DIY enthusiasts. Woodsmith magazine even paid for and published a couple of his woodworking tips!

David B. McKinney (OSP, ‘11) published his first novel, The Invisible Four in April 2016.

Available by ordering at Amazon and Barnes & Noble, this is the story of four amateur sleuths who join forces and face danger to unravel a twisted crime ring at fictitious Bayou City College’s Army ROTC program. Based in Houston, the three students and their professor form an unlikely team against a corrupt ROTC commandant and his band of operatives.

Pete League, (Houston, ’91) carries a seven-or-so handicap and is an active volunteer. He has been a member of the golf course maintenance teams at The Masters and the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am for a number of years. He has also worked several U. S. Opens and the Walker Cup. In 2010 he worked all four majors. Pete directs the Onion Creek Hickory Classic hickory-shaft tournament in Austin. Pete is a member of the Golf Collectors Society and is Chairman of Region Four (TX, LA, AR, OK, NM); his primary collecting interests are antique putters and books. In 2016 he worked on the golf course maintenance team at the Ryder Cup.

Tom Newell Flew his plane to the annual Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Convention in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, the Indianapolis 500 of the general aviation world, to do a bit of a Showcase Flyover at the Rockford, Illinois airport in his twin-engine airplane.
