Alfalfa is a 7,000ha property owned by the van der Merwe family with 410 ha dedicated to 19 grape varieties. Chenin Blanc and Pinotage are specialities. The farm is in the Breede River Valley, near Worcester, WC, South Africa. Alvi’s Drift winery takes its name from of the low water bridge crossing the Breede River on Alfalfa. Built by Albertus Viljoen (Alvi) van der Merwe (the 1st) in 1928 to allow access to the family property, the drift became known locally as Alvi’s Drift. The success of the dairy lead to the creation of the Alvi’s Drift brand as a vehicle to market the family’s wine production. At Alvi’s Drift you will find vineyards, citrus, stone fruit, fodder and of course, the winery. The property includes a game reserve with eland, springbok, ostriches and gemsbok among others. In 1928 Albertus Viljoen (Alvi) van der Merwe build a ford across the Breede to allow access to the family property. This river crossing became know locally as Alvi's Drift. Alvi's son and grandsons still run the family property today and The Drift has given its name to an outstanding range of wines.

In The CellarOnly the best of the free run juice was used and fermented with wild yeast. After fermentation the wine was left on it’s fine lees for 5 months and battonaged regularly before bottling.

The WineLight straw in colour, the chenin blanc is full bodied yet elegant. The wine is very viscous, giving it a wonderful mouthfeel and texture. The acid is well integrated and balanced resulting in a palate that shows great length and fullness for an unwooded wine. Primary fruit flavours of passion fruit and ripe guavas dominate the nose and palate. The resulting wine shows a rare combination of intense aromas, complexity and length which is an excellent example of South Africa chenin blanc.Compliments fish, salads and white meat dishes.

In The CellarFrom crushing the juice was reductively handled. Only the best of the free run juice was used and fermented with VIN 7. After fermentation the wine was left on it’s fine lees for 4 months and battonaged regularly before bottling.

The WineThe wine has an attractive pale straw colour. The wine is light and fruity with aromas of grenadilla and asparagus. The palate is nicely balanced with a full body with a fresh zingy finish. Great for seafood or as an aperitif.

In The CellarThe grapes were fermented with oak and with selected wild yeast. After fermentation the wine was left on it’s fermentation lees for 5 months and battonaged regularly before bottling.

The WineThe wine has a lovely pale straw colour. The nose is typical of viognier, but in an elegant and restrained way. The aromas are dominated by apricots and white peaches. The wine is soft, ripe, and round with a lovely viscous texture. The flavours linger, giving the wine a very long flavour profile. The fruit is nuanced with a hint of cashew nuts, elegant and aromatic, this really is a red wine drinkers white. Good with spicy dishes and hard cheese.

The vineyards are specifically selected and specially pruned and suckered to get even ripeness and well balanced growth. irrigation and fertilization monitoring systems are in place to ensure small berries without disturbing the balance of the vines.

In The CellarThe wine was fermented on their skins in open fermenters on French and American oak chips and punched through regularly by hand. Directly after crushing about 52% of the juice was drawn off. After fermentation the wine was matured on French an American oak chips for 9 months where it also finished malolactic fermentation.

The WineAlvi’s Drift pinotage has been a speciality of the cellar since it was first bottled in 2006. The wine has a strong, medium dark colour with a garnet hue. The bouquet and palate are filled with juicy, ripe berry characters with mulberry and blackberry dominating. The tannin structure is well balanced with the oak and fruit. Subtle vanillin oak is integrated with hints of chocolate and dark cherries. A lovely wine for roast meat or duck.

The WineThe 2011 Alvi’s Drift AD chardonnay has a lively pale lemon yellow with a hint of green. The nose is blend of cashew nuts, subtle peach and fl inty, toasted oak. Very specifi c vinifi cation techniques and the barrel maturation process have resulted in an integrated and elegant wine. The palate is full, balanced and lingering with a hint of citrus, white chocolate and vanilla pods. The wine has great aging potential and will reward 2 to 5 years of cellaring. An ideal companion for fi rm fi sh such as tuna.

It was left on the fermentation lees to mature in the barrels for 11 months. Mostly 300 ltr French Oak barrels were used of which 30% were new barrels. The three components of the wine were matured on their own and were blended just before bottling.

The WineIt is a blend of Chenin Blanc, Viognier and Chardonnay.The 2010 Alvi’s Drift AD CVC has a lovely pale lemon/straw color. The nose showed lifted peach and apricot characters. A lovely blend of roasted nuts with a hint of butterscotch and ripe melons. The palate is balanced to perfection with oak, fruit, and acidity all adding to the wines length and fullness. Great with Asian dishes, seafood and soft cheeses.

In The CellarThe wine was fermented on their skins in open fermenters and punched through regularly by hand. Directly after crushing about 30% of the juice was drawn off. After fermentation the wine was matured for 22 months in a combination of French and American Oak barrels of which a third were new barrels.

The WineIt is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinotage.This classic cape blend is full of ripe blackberries, mulberries and plums, integrated with vanilla and cashew nut characters through careful oak maturation. A perfect partner for red meat, game, duck and mature cheeses. This wine will continue to improve with age for 5-8 years.

Ad Muscat De Frontignan 2007ADMUSCATDEFRONTIGNAN2007

The GrapesThe grapes are estate grown and specifically selected for their ability to give high sugar while still maintaining the quality of the grapes. The grapes were harvested very late at a Balling of 40°.

In The CellarThe grapes were left on the skins for a week and started to ferment before it was crushed and fortified. It was left to settle cleanly and then went into small french oak barrels for maturation. It was left in the barrels for 18 months before bottling.

The WineThe 2007 Alvi’s Drift white muscadel is an outstanding example of a rich, ripe and luscious fortified dessert wine. The wine has a lovely golden colour reflecting the ripeness of the grapes used in its production. The nose is filled with complex aromas of dried fruits, muscat grapes and christmas pudding. The high sugar level of the wine gives it a viscous and decadent mouth feel. The wine fills the palate with an explosion of dried apricot, peach and nutty flavours. Ad Muscat De Frontignan 2010

The GrapesThe grapes are estate grown specifically selected for their ability to give high sugar while still maintaining the quality of the grapes. The grapes were harvested very late at a Balling of 40°.

In The CellarThe grapes were left on the skins for a week and started to ferment before it was crushed and fortified. It was left to settle cleanly and then went into small french oak barrels for maturation. It was left in the barrels for 18 months before bottling.

The WineThe 2010 Alvi’s Drift white muscadel is an outstanding example of a rich, ripe and luscious fortified dessert wine. The wine has a lovely golden colour reflecting the ripeness of the grapes used in its production. The nose is filled with complex aromas of dried fruits, muscat grapes and christmas pudding. The high sugar level of the wine gives it a viscous and decadent mouth feel. The wine fills the palate with an explosion of dried apricot, peach and nutty flavours. DESCRIPTION: The Naughty Girl sparkling pink was made from a blend of muscat and other grape varieties. Only the best free-run juice was used to ensure the Naughty Girl is soft and elegant. The wine was fermented at low temperatures to maximise fruitiness. Fermentation was stopped partway through to preserve the natural fruit sugar and muscat aromas.”
