    Steve Storage, parent, expressed concerns related to safety due to the elimination of transportation for middle schools. Mr. Storage suggested that the Board consider charging parents a fee for transportation.

    Presentation: Student Success Update: The following staff and students provided a presentation on the International Business Academy Program at La Sierra High School:

    President Wilson introduced and welcomed former Board Member Zack Earp and Dr. Nicolas Ferguson. 4. Superintendent’s Report: Dr. Tucker provided a brief report on the

    following: Carol Addiss Student Drug Use Prevention Poster Contest Winner:

    Schemuel Martinez, Stokoe Elementary School student, won first place at the county level in the 3rd to 5th grade category. Schemuel will receive his plaque on May 25th at the Board of Supervisors’ meeting.

    207. Special Recognitions Superintendent’s Report

    Norco College Upward Bound Posse Scholarship Recipients: The Posse Foundation identifies recruits and trains high school students with extraordinary academic and leadership potential. The following Norte Vista High School students received four-year, full-tuition leadership scholarships:

    o Melissa Acosta, $176,000.00 to attend Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

    o Stephanie Morales, $176,000.00 to attend Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania

    o Norma Gallardo, $60,000.00 to attend the University of California, Los Angeles

    Hearing Session: President Wilson extended an invitation to the audience to present matters of concern to the Board. The following individuals came forward:

    Carmen Sexton-Boykin, President CSEA Chapter 339, expressed concerns about plans to relocate the Career Center at La Sierra High School.

    President Wilson requested clarification as to whether or not a teacher would be placed in the classroom currently housing the Career Center.

    Mrs. Sexton-Boykin confirmed that the plan is to move a teacher into that room.

    Mr. Johnson requested an update on the Career Center. Mr. Pérez requested that no changes take place until the Board

    receives a report. Guy Harrel, Twinhill Elementary School Teacher, provided the

    Board with an update on the status of his position and requested a transfer back to his previous position.

    5. Approve Minutes: The Board unanimously approved the Minutes of the

    Regular Board Meeting of May 5, 2011, and the Minutes of the Special Board Meeting of May 6, 2011, upon a motion made by Greg Kraft and seconded by Art Kaspereen, Jr.

    Please Note: Although items are listed in numerical order, Item 13 was brought forward to accommodate the audience. 6. Action Items: The following Consent Agenda items were presented for approval: a. Accept Gifts:

    1) Orrenmaa PTA donated $2,000.00 to Orrenmaa Elementary School for study trips.

    2) Schools First Federal Credit Union donated $300.00 to Alvord High

    School. 3) United Way of the Inland Valleys donated $26.47 to Norte Vista

    High School.

    Discussion/Information Items: 17. Innovative Learning Center – Payment for Facilities – Riverside City

    College District: Mr. Pérez requested that staff review the contract and be sure that it is being implemented as intended. Mr. Pérez stated that he has many concerns one of which is that Alvord Unified School District is paying for all utilities at the site. Mr. Pérez believes that Riverside Community College has not placed the intended classes as outlined by the Joint Committee’s original plan at the Innovative Learning Center. Mr. Pérez stated that the current situation is not compatible for both sides and needs to be addressed. Mr. Pérez expressed disappointment in staff for not providing back-up information for this item. Dr. Tucker offered to sit down with Mr. Pérez next week and review the contract. Mr. Johnson stated that there needs to be discussions with Riverside Community College and requested that the District re-establish joint meetings beginning in July.

    Mr. Pérez stated that the District has requested a joint meeting and Riverside Community College’s Board of Trustees declined the invitation; however, if the joint meetings are re-established they need to be formed as they were originally with the Board President and Vice President serving on the committee.

    Employment Benefits (OPEB) Tina Daigneault, Controller, introduced Marilyn Jones, Actuary, who provided the report.

    (ADA) Report for period ending April 22, 2011, was received. Board/Superintendent Comments: Ben Johnson ~ Mr. Johnson asked where this year has gone? It is hard to believe that graduations are here already. Mr. Johnson told everyone to have a good night. Greg Kraft ~ Mr. Kraft stated that he is sorry to see Diana go; however, he understands her wanting to advance her career and wishes her well. Mr. Kraft congratulated Cynthia Woods on her appointment and stated that he has had the opportunity to observe her at Arlanza and was impressed by the excellent job she did as a Principal. Mr. Kraft welcomed Cynthia and stated that he looks forward to working with her. Mr. Kraft had an opportunity to speak to middle school students in San Bernardino and shared a story about an inmate who was a good kid that made one bad decision that has affected the rest of his life, following that visit Mr. Kraft has received 179 letters. Mr. Kraft encouraged teachers and classified staff to speak with youth and assist them in making good decisions. Carolyn M. Wilson ~ Mrs. Wilson congratulated Diana on her new position and stated that she will be missed. Mrs. Wilson welcomed Cynthia Woods. Mrs. Wilson enjoyed the District’s Annual Retirement and Recognition Dinner and was happy to see everyone visiting, happy and having a good time. Mrs. Wilson is looking forward to attending all of the promotions and graduation ceremonies. José Luis Pérez ~ “Diana, thank you for becoming part of Alvord, we will miss you.     Art Kaspereen, Jr. ~ Mr. Kaspereen reviewed all the events he has attended and stated that he has enjoyed seeing and hearing all the great things going on with our students. Mr. Kaspereen stated that there are many students dealing with difficult problems; however, they have overcome their problems and are excelling in school. Mr. Kaspereen congratulated Diana and stated that she was a fantastic driver in the La Sierra Grand Prix. Mr. Kaspereen congratulated Cynthia Woods.
