bOOkINGSAlzheimer’s Australia ACT Education services provide a variety of up to date, informative and practical dementia education programs for health, acute care, disability and aged care providers.

Participants of these programs will gain essential skills and knowledge regarding dementia care as well as the opportunity to network with others working in the sector.

Courses and workshops are available throughout the year at the Alzheimer’s Australia ACT office.

We also offer customised education and professional development in your workplace.

Our education is delivered by experienced and knowledgeable educators.

Bookings are essential for all education programs.

Library and information service Alzheimer’s Australia ACT library provides access to quality dementia related information. This information is applicable to people living with dementia, their carers, friends and family. Information is also useful for health professionals, other service providers and members of the general public. Resources contained in our library include books, journals and magazines, DVDs and CD’s. Topics covered in the library collection are behaviour, residential care, dementia design, activities, reminiscing, carer stories and books for children.Anyone is welcome to visit and use the facilities of the library. However, you need to be a member to borrow from the library collection. Library opening hours are 9.00am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday. We know people living with dementia are at a far greater risk of developing a delirium. Participants will - • Explore the definition of delirium, how to recognise it and what actions to take in the event of a delirium• Explore the comorbidities that often exist alongside dementia. This workshop provides an understanding of the different ways we communicate and recognises the effects of dementia on communication. It explores the changes for the person living with dementia and the impact of the response the person receives from others. Strategies to enable the person’s independence and inclusion are identified and participants have opportunities to explore important communication concepts such as validation. Also in this session, participants will be given a review of the impact of dementia on the person, their families and carers. The focus will be on care partnerships allowing participants to understand the value of family and carer contributions to the shared responsibilities of care. Participants will learn how to identify strategies for improving interaction between services and families/carers in order to be more responsive to their needs.

The Montessori Method emphasises the importance of keeping the person living with dementia independent for as long as possible. Independence is kept through different activities: sensory, social and cognitive, and activities of daily living.

This workshop offers an overview of the Montessori Method and activities for dementia care, demonstrating the creation and presentation of meaningful activities.

This program has been developed by Alzheimer’s Australia in conjunction with leading Montessori experts. The skills and strategies explored in this workshop can be applied to all care settings including home, community and residential settings.

Note: This course offers points towards professional education with the Diversional Therapy Association of Australia.

This workshop is for all staff caring for people with dementia. This is a very practical hands-on workshop that will assist participants to gain a very real understanding of dementia. This experience will be used to assist staff to understand environmental elements that are friendly or adverse to a person with dementia. Karen CmielManager, Education Services Alzheimer’s Australia ACT

Karen has tertiary qualifications in Leisure and Health, Community Services Management, Training and Assessment and the Montessori Approach to Dementia Care. She has worked as a therapist in the aged, community and disabilities sectors for 20 years. Karen has taught at Certficiate I, II, III, IV and Diploma level. Karen has been teaching in Diversional Therapy and dementia related topics for over 16 years.

Jill BrownEducator, Alzheimer’s Australia ACT

Jill has tertiary qualifications in Public Policy, Political Science, Psychology and Philosophy and has worked in the disability, mental health and aged care sectors for over 16 years. Jill has been teaching dementia related topics with Alzheimer’s Australia for over 8 years.

Michelle ChaplinEducator, Alzheimer’s Australia ACT

Michelle has tertiary qualifications in Communications Organisational Behaviour and Management of Community Programs. She has worked within the community development sector, change management projects and health and well being programs for over 14 years. Michelle co-ordinated training events for the SA & NT Dementia Training Study Centre before joining Alzheimer’s Australia ACT in 2015.

Charise BuckleyACT DBMAS Consultant and Educator, Alzheimer’s Australia ACT

Qualifications/Profession: Registered Nurse, Cert IV in Work Health and Safety, Diplomas in Business and Frontline Management, Cert IV Training and Education. Charise has worked in a variety of roles within health and aged care particularly of the past 15 years before coming to work with DBMAS at Alzheimer’s ACT 4.5 years ago. Charise also holds an adjunct teaching position with CIT in Health, teaching the dementia specific unit in Certificate III and IV, Aged Care.
