� AD is the sixth-leading cause of death in the country � Someone in the United States develops AD every 69

seconds.� AD is the most common form of dementia.� Nationally, 5.4 million individuals are living with AD� 2000-2008 mortality data shows that death rates

have declined for most major diseases while deaths from AD have risen 66 percent.

DSHS Alzheimer’s Disease Program

� Established in 1987 to provide information and support to individuals with AD, their families, and long-term care providers (Texas H&SC, Chapter 101).� Provide staff support to the Texas Council on

Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders.� Currently implementing first Texas State Plan on

AD. � Coordinates the activities of the Texas Alzheimer’s

Disease Partnership. � 2012 Budget $96,000 (GR)

Texas Council on Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders (TCADRD)

� Established in 1989� Seventeen member council� Serves as the state's advocate for persons with AD

and those who care for them (Texas H&SC, Chapter 101). � Meets in-person approximately two times per year at

the call of the Chair.

Texas Alzheimer’s Research and Care Consortium (TARCC)

� Texas Alzheimer’s Disease Council mandated in 1999 to establish a Consortium of Alzheimer's Disease Centers in Texas (Texas Education Code, Chapter 154). � TARCC is the first, formal collaboration in Texas

between five of the state’s leading medical research institutions.� TARCC is charged to improve early diagnosis,

treatment, and prevention of AD through a systematic approach to the provision of uniform clinical services and to the sharing of research data.

prevention and brain health¡ Support improved quality of life through better disease

information and services for caregivers¡ Work to improve state and local capacity to address

� Joint Activities and Accomplishments:¡ First plan for Alzheimer’s Disease in Texas÷ Focus: public health impact of projected increases in population in AD

¡ Bringing together researchers and clinicians across Texas to identify opportunities for collaborative research÷ Currently planning a symposium to bring together all Texas

Alzheimer’s researchers with national figures to discuss future collaborations.

¡ Inclusion of prevention and brain health as a goal in the state plan÷ Cognitive impairment was part of the Behavioral Risk Factor

Surveillance System for 2011 – data available in May 2012¡ First effort in Texas to identify best practices for active medical

management of AD
