Intrakranielle elektrische Selbststimulation
I applied a brief train of 60-cycle sine-wave electrical current whenever the animal entered one corner of the enclosure. The animal did not stay away from the corner, but rather came back quickly after a brief sortie which followed the second stimulation. By the time the third electrical stimulus had been applied the animal seemed indubitably to be ”coming back for more”.

• Unstillbares, kompulsives Drogenverlangen („Craving“)
• Chronisch negative Affektlage bei Drogenabstinenz

Zusammenfassung
• Sucht = Drogenanwendung = Belohnungslernen

• "Shall we not pass a law that, in the first place, no children under eighteen may touch wine at all, teaching that it is wrong to pour fire upon fire either in body or in soul ... and thus guarding against the excitable disposition of the young? And next, we shall rule that the young man under thirty may take wine in moderation, but that he must entirely abstain from intoxication and heavy drinking. But when a man has reached the age of forty, he may join in the convivial gatherings and invoke Dionysus, above all other gods, inviting his presence at the rite of the elders, which he bestowed on mankind as a medicine potent against the crabbedness of Old Age, that thereby we men may renew our youth, and that, through forgetfulness of care, the temper of our souls may lose its hardness
• The brain hedonic system may be a limited resource. One can expend this resource rapidly in a binge of drug taking or other compulsive behavior, but at a great risk for entrance into the spiralling dysregulation of the addiction cycle. Alternatively, one can adopt a more regulated, “hedonic Calvinistic” approach, where use of the reward system is restricted within the homeostatic boundary (that is without the development of subsequent negative affect). Such an ascetic view may or may not fall within certain cultural norms, but probably makes biological sense.
