A World Beyond Boundaries

Developing Talent to AddressGlobal Challenges

VISION AND MISSION

5

New-World challenges demand a new breed of professionals Our most profound problems cross national boundaries, requiring not just interdisciplinary thought but also inter-locking experiences to understand them. They call upon problem-solvers to submit their whole being in the service of creating sustainable change. And in this world of accelerating problems, the most important thing to do is help more people become problem-solvers.

The market failure in higher education In September 2011, the Economist’s Special Report “The Great Mismatch” explored the divide between employers needing talent and the high level of unemployment around the world. The US Institute of Peace, the global youth organization AIESEC, the premier consulting (McKinsey) and human resources (Manpower) firms, and a major think-tank (Institute for the Future) all have publications exploring why CEOs increasingly claim that their biggest constraint to growth is finding the right staff.

What leaders of change need

VISIONCOURAGE

To see what is not, and ask why not

To look beyond your own position and identity to see what you can do

To set a new direction, for self, organization/community, and planet

To step into the unknown, and into possibility, without having all the answers

To hold steady in the face of both the seductions and threats of the status quo

To stand up when others can’t (or won’t)

OUR VALUES

9

EMPATHY

GLOBAL MINDSET

CHANGEMAKING

To see yourself as part of a larger whole

To burn for justice

To sense common ground when difference threatens

To navigate different contexts, locations and timezones

To see the hidden connections between people, ideas and systems, and build new ones

To catalyze impact across both perceived and actual boundaries

To build, not (just) critique

To scale the walls that stand in your way

To deploy not just skills and knowledge, but all parts of you

“Look – I will recommend Amani Institute to any of my colleagues. We get stuck thinking we know everything and are experts in social development, but anyone (first year or 20th of their career) can benefit from different points of view and new thinking. I really liked that it was not a course about telling you how to think, but one in which you had freedom to create your own thoughts.

Gautam Shah, Former Director, Accenture, Development Partnerships - East Africa

““I was one of the first recipients of an Amani Scholarship in 2013. Through this investment in my education I got the skills and network needed to follow my dream and launch a social enterprise, Plastic Fantastic Kenya. We are an art for social and environmental change venture that collaborates with artisans and designers to create upcycled handcrafts which conscious consumers love. The plastic used to create these handcrafts is collected through our school upcycling and mindfulness education programs. Educating children, artisans, and consumers, we are shifting how the public relates to trash!” Naomi Wanjiru, Plastic Fantastic Co-Founder

A World Beyond Boundaries “All the interesting problems cross boundaries.

Some straddle disciplines. Some require co-operation between business, government, academia and non-profit groups. So you have to train people to cross boundaries. David Ellwood Dean, Harvard Kennedy School of Government
