AMATEUR RADIO IN THE CLASSROOM

• Teaches basic electronics and radio wave theory

• Allows exploration of new technologies

• Promotes improvement of communication skills

• Promotes global communication and understanding

• Grown to include new operating modes besides Morse code and voice, including digital and TV

2/9/2017Jeff Slattery, N8SUZ, Athens City Schools, eTech Ohio 01/31/11 3

AMATEUR RADIO IN THE CLASSROOM • An entry level amateur license (Technician) is easy to get

• 35 question test from publicly published question pool

• No Morse code (CW) requirement for any license

• Training programs/station grants available to teachers/schools• http://www.arrl.org/teachers-institute-on-wireless-technology

• Pickaway-Ross CTC recently awarded station grant

SCHOOL/YOUTH ACTIVITIES• The American Radio Relay League holds a School Club

Roundup Contest in February and October• http://www.arrl.org/school-club-roundup

• Jamboree on the Air Contest for Scouts in October• http://www.arrl.org/jamboree-on-the-air-jota

• ARRL Rookie Roundup held April, August and Decemberfor amateurs licensed three years or less (mentoring)• http://www.arrl.org/rookie-roundup

OTHER YOUTH OPERATING OPPORTUNITIES

• The American Radio Relay League Annual Field Day –Most local clubs operate last weekend in June for 24 hours using emergency power and temporary antennas• http://www.arrl.org/field-day

• Lower license classes and non-hams can operate under control

• Ohio State Parks on the Air – second Saturday in September where youth may operate like for Field Day• http://www.ospota.org/ospota/index.php

• Work from a state park to other parks/park collectors

MODES

• Most common modes have been Morse code (CW), voice, radioteletype (RTTY) and packet

• In recent years have added amateur television (ATV) and computer operated modes using sound cards like PSK32, JT65 and JT9 which use less bandwidth than CW

• Now have digital voice modes like Icom D-STAR and Yaesu Fusion that can also link via Internet (trunking)

MODES

• In the last year there has been an upswing in digital mobile radio (DMR) which allows voice and data to share bandwidth on a repeater frequency

• We are seeing many amateur radio accessory projects that utilize Arduino which also teaches programming skills in addition to electronics fundamentals and circuit design

2/9/2017Jeff Slattery, N8SUZ, Athens City Schools, eTech Ohio 01/31/11 8

JT65 AND JT9

• JT65 and JT9 are two new computer sound card HF (shortwave), low power radio communication modes that use less bandwidth then their predecessor PSK31 mode

• JT65 uses free, open source software and is limited to 13 characters on each transmission using 65 tones. JT9 uses 9

• JT65 tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ln6tNQULbQM

DIGITAL MOBILE RADIO (DMR)

• Requires special DMR radios and repeaters

• Most systems use standard Motorola MOTOTRBO protocol

• Uses two slot TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) in 12.5 kHz channels

OTHER DIGITAL OPERATING MODES

• WinLink 2000

• EchoLink VOIP radio linking

• IRLP VOIP radio linking

• Amateur television (analog and now digital)

2/9/2017Jeff Slattery, N8SUZ, Athens City Schools, eTech Ohio 01/31/11 11

MORE DIGITAL OPERATING MODES

• Packet radio

• Automatic Packet Reporting System (APRS) can be used for geocaching, GIS mapping or foxhunting projects which use directional antennas to monitor signal strength to find hidden transmitters

• RTTY and PSK31

ARDUINO AMATEUR CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS

• Allow hands-on application of electronics principals and circuit design

• Teaches programming and troubleshooting skills

• Allows students to create projects of interest for their ownstation or home
