But up in Santa’s lodge, all was quiet. The usual hustle and bustle of preparing Christmas presents was missing for Santa had fallen ill.

And as Santa took a closer look, he could not believe what he saw. For, behind the reindeer was a long train of sleds, carrying little children dressed in all sorts of colours.

In came a little girl, hugging something soft in her arms.“I heard that you were sick, Mr. Santa,” she began. “So I’m giving you my teddy bear, to keep you company.”

“Oh dear! What will the children say when they don’t receive presents this year?” Santa wondered sadly, as he lay in his bed.

One by one, they hopped out onto the snow and headed towards Santa’s lodge.

“Why, thank you, little Emma!” said Santa, for he knew every child by name.

It was a beautiful December day, with clear blue skies and snow-covered treetops. Christmas was in the air!

Suddenly, he heard a noise from outside. He looked out of the window and saw his four reindeer standing patiently as usual. But they seemed quite out of breath, as if they had just finished a long trip.

Soon came a knock on the door. “Come in!” Santa called out, for he was extremely curious.

And one by one the children came in through Santa’s door, each with a special gift to wish Santa well.

“Come, let us all share these wonderful gifts.” And he gathered the children around him in a big circle.

He looked fondly at all the eager faces around him.

There were cookies, pies, socks, mittens, books, jigsaw puzzles, and even a small Christmas tree!

“Santa, which present do you like best?” Emma soon piped up.

“This, my little ones, is the true meaning of Christmas.” And with that, Santa gave each of the children a big, warm holiday hug.

Then entered a young boy with a red package in his arms. “We knew that you were ill, Papa Santa,” he said. “So my family knitted this quilt for you,to keep you warm in the winter days.”“Why, what a wonderful thought, Paul!”beamed Santa, patting him on the head.

“Christmas delivered to my doorstep!” exclaimed Santa.

“My dear little ones,” Santa replied, smiling. “It is the love and kindness that each of you has shown me today that is the best present of all.”

Pride goes before a

STRONGWEAK

There was a proud teak tree in the forest. He was tall and strong. There was a small herb next to the tree.

The teak tree said, “I am very strong. No one can defeat me.” Hearing this, the herb replied, “Dear friend, too much pride is harmful. Even the strong will fall one day.”

One day a strong wind blew. The teak stood firmly but the herb bowed low. The teak made fun of the herb.

One day, there was a storm in the forest. The storm kept growing stronger. The teak tried his best to stand upright, but in the end, he fell down. That was the end of the proud tree.

When everything was calm again, the herb stood straight. He looked around. He saw that the proud teak had fallen.

The Blue Jackal

sToRy

14 December 2016

A thirsty jackal came to a village from the forest.

He looked for water. He saw a big tub. He jumped into it. The dye in the tub turned the jackal’s body blue. He returned to the forest. He felt proud of having a beautiful colour. He called all the other animals.

The jackal told them that the Goddess of the forest gave him blue colour and asked him to be the king of the forest. The other animals believed and obeyed him. One day he was sitting on a high rock. Suddenly he heard the howling of other jackals. He forgot himself for a moment and howled in a loud voice. A lion saw this. He caught the blue jackal and killed him and ate him.

The Foolish Bear

One day, a hungry bear came out of his den

to look for food. The bear went to the river to catch some fish. He stood by the river and saw enough fish to eat. He caught a fish and thought, “This fish is too small to fill my stomach. I must catch a bigger fish.” So, he let off the small fish and waited for some time.

MORAL: Be happy

with whatever you get.

He caught a small fish again and let it go. This way he caught many small fish, but let all of them go. By sunset, the bear did not catch any big fish. He slowly began to feel tired. He thought, “All those small fish, together would have filled up my stomach, but now it is too late.” He remained hungry that day.

Continuation....

To be continued......

Discipline, behaviour, behaviour management, whatever you call it, it must be intrinsic and not extrinsic. This means the child must feel loved enough to know how to express his needs. He should not feel fearful or threatened. The more you scold children, threaten them, beat them you are putting them into a vicious cycle of negative feelings.

Children need to be taught ways of expressing their feelings and how to deal with them. Children need to learn what to do when others upset them. Children learn by

imitation, so it is we adults who should show them the acceptable ways of behaviour. If we are going to shout and scream to get their attention, then they learn the same. If we are going to bang things when we are angry, then they learn the same.

For very young children, say under three years, the best way to handle them when they are upset or angry or throwing a tantrum is in three ways-

IgnoreDistractChange activity

IGNORING-Helps when children have fallen into a habit of crying to get attention. Over a period of time with consistency if you ignore them when they cry etc but give them attention when they do not cry and the child learns that the negative behaviour is not working and will slowly adopt the positive behaviour. Ignoring is not to be used only after the child completes one year.

CHANGE OF ACTIVITY-Is like redirecting his attention to a new activity. Maybe he is tired of the situation etc and needs to forget about it by getting involved in something else. So a change of activity works well.

With children above the age of three the above may not work so in that case we may have to teach them conflict resolution. Conflict at this age can be internal or external. Internal conflict is the feeling of being ignored etc and sometimes when children are asked about it and talk about it they feel better, because now language is an integral part of the child’s life, so we must teach him to use language to deal with problems and not deal with actions like biting, beating, fighting etc. using language to solve your problems is the best conflict resolution technique that you can teach your child.

DISTRACTION- Works even in the biggest tantrum. ‘ look what I found in this box’ followed by an action of covering your hand over the box, makes the child intrigued enough to stop the crying or the tantrum, and helps in distracting

him, most children forget the tantrum once distracted. But it also depends if the distraction was interesting enough, because if it was a letdown then I will resort to a bigger tantrum. So work on your distractions! And by the way, ‘look the crow took away your bottle’ etc does not work on this generation! Be more creative.
