Project Title ‘The Quest for Dawnbringer’

Section 1: Rationale (approx. 150 words)My project is a five to seven chapter excerpt of a novel I wish to write. This project is yet another passion project of mine, which I hope will intrigue and draw in an audience eager to read a new take on fantasy stories which a rich cast of characters and settings. The Quest for Dawnbringer is a story inspired by Celtic folklore with aspects of Greek Folklore as well as Arabic.

Section 2: Project Concept (approx. 200 words)In this project I am aiming to write a five to seven chapter excerpt of a fantasy story I wish to continue with after college. I have been influenced by various collections of classic stories as well as modern takes on the fantasy genre. The aim of my project is to craft a story that will set me up on the path to writing a full novel after college.

When it comes to the research, my main focus is to find out what makes a fantasy story in order to structure and create a narrative that fits with what qualifies as a fantasy story. I will look to critically analyse three examples of fantasy stories, a survey asking people what makes a fantasy story and finally crafting a table to compare six novels with a fantasy theme. I hope to capture an audience that includes those with a love of fantasy stories as well as the mythos mentioned above in the rationale.

My role in this project will be the main writer and editor of the story and the technical requirements includes: Researching influences on the story, writing skills in general as well as communication skills.

Section 3: Evaluation (approx. 150 words)

For the evaluation process and everything regarding it, I will be taking note in my notebook as well as making a character sheet and a chapter structure sheet to note any changes to a plot or how a chapter will play out. Evaluations to the work will be made after every major section in this portfolio to keep myself on track.

In this project I will be not be working with any other person due to my personal preference not to work with others and to rely mainly on myself for all aspects of this project, however when it comes to feedback I will rely on readers.

CHAPTER 1 Introduction

This project portfolio is a report of my final major project (FMP) for my second-year UAL Extended

Diploma in Creative Writing and Journalism. The project is a small excerpt of five to seven chapters

of a novel I am aspiring to write, called The Quest for Dawnbringer. This is a fantasy themed novel

that I hope to complete outside of college yet start as my final major project. This first chapter of the

project portfolio will show the background of my project starting with writing about myself, what I

learned on my course as well as who or what inspired me for my project. This is followed by

explaining what my project is about and why it is important. The chapter will end with the research

plan.

The Background of my Project

What is it that makes me write?I believe that the special something that drives me to write and continue writing is simply the deep desire to tell a story and entrance as many people into that world as I can.

My personal experiences that influence my choices (idea for the project, my role in the project, how it relates to my future career)

When starting this project, I did not know what I wanted to do when I left college, however after Unit 9 where I chose to write a short story, after writing one word in that short story I fell in love

10

with the idea of writing a book and so the first concept for The Quest for Dawnbringer was born. My role in this project will be the writer, the main researcher as well as the editor. This project however will partially relate to my future career, due to the fact I do not know what is in store for the future

What is the basic premise of my project? The synopsis is as follows: The clans of Morweness have given up hope on finding their lost king, Aurelion and now they have decided that a new ruler must take his place by questing for his relics. After a heated debate, the clans of Drekarè, Iolaire and Rhaelhart offered up a champion; an eccentric druid, a stout warrior and a patient huntress. However, on this quest the three champions will face various challenges and will discover that what they all believed to be true is about to change.

What do I seek to achieve and how it relates to my target audience? I personally seek to achieve a five chapter start to this story to give readers a feel for what they can expect for the rest of the novel, this will relate to my target audience because it is a fantasy novel. I also seek to achieve a deeper knowledge of storytelling, characterisation as well as the genre conventions that will drive this story.

Who am I?

After studying at Canterbury College for three years there has been a lot of change in my personality and my skills in the media industry. For example, looking back at my previous FMPs can show the differences. I feel the best way to show who I am in 2019 is to reflect on my previous projects then show you who I am and what has helped make me who I am today.

Year One – The Alice Project, 2017

In early 2017 I began work on my first Canterbury College FMP which was called the Alice Project, which was a review based piece on the video game Alice: Madness Returns by American McGee.

In early 2018 I started my second FMP named after the radio drama I would be writing. This project was supposed to be a radio drama however it ended up being a simple radio script with an extensive amount of research. The piece was inspired by my newfound love of radio work with a previous project, where I adapted a tale from Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales into a radio drama, this particular radio drama was shortlisted for an award in the Young Arias during May of 2019. This FMP’s radio drama was inspired by Dragon Age, Bioware’s RPG.

Why am I doing this project?

People I feel comfortable talking to: My mother, the lads at college, Osmi, Rey.

Things that have changed over a year:

Things I like: Books, Netflix, Darts, Skyping the Lads, DnD

Things you would like to change: The State of the world,

Your deepest fears: Spiders, Abandonment, Nuclear war

People you feel comfortable talking to: My college friends from last year, my discord server friends, my friend overseas in Finland and of course, My family.

Your small thoughts: My small thoughts include ideas about my work

What did I learn on my course?

On my course there were many things I learnt from the 14th of September, 2018 to the rest of 2019. The lessons that have stuck with me the most however and that will aid me in this, that range from perspective and opinion pieces where the lessons of perspective helped me to decide the best perspective suited for my story. As well as learning from perspectives there was the lessons of Show Don’t Tell that helped me refine my creative writing skills

For links to the work mentioned, click the images provided below:

When looking at the lessons of show don’t tell there is still a lot of development I can do regarding this lesson. Additional links regarding the lesson of show don’t tell can be found at:

3

What is my project about?

My project is a story based upon the narrative that follows three champions on a quest for an

ancient king’s relics from the previous century in order to save their lands from civil war. However as

these warriors journey for the relics, they will face a variety of obstacles and challenges along the

way, such as an order of knights seeking to stop them, a man descended from an ancient foe, an

annoying bard from a mysterious isle and a group of exiled nobles from a land plunged into war.

What they find however will change the way they have seen their world since they day they first

opened their eyes.

Department of Media and Communication

My role in this project is the writer, researcher and editor and it will involve me writing the story out,

structuring the chapters and developing various characters, locations and items that will feature in

the story.

Why my project is important? I personally believe that my project is important for a similar reason as to why my previous FMP was important to me. This project encompasses my passion for writing and my desire to capture the untapped potential of Celtic Mythos. My main desire for this project is to one day get the piece published or just discovered by people in general. I want to offer a new take on fantasy stories where overused clichés can be avoided, and the issues characters face are realistic enough in their consequences whilst still being classed as fantasy when it comes to what characters are facing. The project is also important to the readership because it is a new take on the fantasy genre that I believe my target audience will enjoy deeply. The work also has inspiration from various periods of history that can often be overlooked in terms of writing for fantasy which I believe the audience will enjoy and appreciate. In short, this project is important to me because it is the best showcase of my passion regarding writing.

My Research Plan

Table 3- My Research Plan

FMP - RESEARCH PLAN No of Words

The Quest for Dawnbringer/What makes a fantasy story. 150

• Analyse three books of varying fantasy genres• Craft a survey to research what people believe is involved with the fantasy

genre.• Compare and contrast six fantasy books to search for a common theme.• Craft a table to present findings with six books to compare and contrast.

Why is it important? - Importance 100

My project is important for a similar reason as to why my previous FMP was important to me. This project encompasses my passion for writing and my desire to capture the untapped potential of Celtic Mythos. My main desire for this project is to one day get the piece published or just discovered by people in general.

My research question 100

For this project I am trying to find out ‘what it is that makes a story a fantasy story’

Literature/Resources Review

Introduction In this chapter I will be showcasing the resources used to complete this project and give me a deeper look into my research question. ‘What makes a fantasy story?’ When it comes to resources, they have all been linked in the research plan above. This chapter will include a variety of sources including books and online articles and websites

Critical Analysis

Analysis 1 - Fantasy Anthology / Folklore in The Arabian Nights translated by Sir Richard Francis Burton

Who produced it?

There is a lot of contention as to who originally wrote the stories in The Arabian Nights however Sir Richard Francis Burton was one of three and arguably the most famous of the three, to translate the Nights into the English language.

What do I know about the author?

Whilst I don't know about the original author of the Nights I have done some research on the publisher, Sir Richard Francis Burton. From my research I found out that Sir Richard Francis Burton was born on the 19th of March, 1821. In his childhood, he travelled around with his parents and was

What do I know about the historical/political context of the product? (What art movement, period ideas, political or worldview the chosen media product belongs to?

The Arabian Nights consist of various folktales from the Islamic culture and beyond. The anthology focuses on a variety of topics that range from infidelity, destiny towards satire and murder.

What are the influences?

It is hard to pinpoint the specific influences of The Arabian Nights, there are strong influences of Islamic culture with some hints of Pre Islamic, Arabian culture. The Arabian Nights has been quoted to have influenced authors such as, Arthur Conan Doyle, H.P Lovecraft, H.G. Wells and Elizabeth Gaskell.

What skills, production techniques, practises and knowledge have been used in the production of the chosen product? (Identify skills, production techniques, practices and knowledge, critically analyse and compare with similar products).

For this anthology, the skills needed to produce this level of work would include: Generalised reading and writing skills, knowledge of other languages to translate the original works.

What technologies have been used for the production and distribution and how they influenced the product?

To distribute The Arabian Nights in Europe there has been various translations in the following languages: English, French, German, Dutch, Italian, Russian, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese and Hebrew. With the translation process there can be issues with mis-translations as well as some parts of the book being untranslatable. Another way some of the tales within the Nights has been distributed has been the disneyfication of the stories, the most notable of which is the tale of Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp that was adapted into a Disney motion picture in 1992 under the name Aladdin, there is also the Tale of Sinbad that was adapted into Sinbad: The Legend of the Seven Seas by DreamWorks. There have also been various games that draw inspiration from the Nights. Such as one of the Soul Calibre titles, the Prince of Persia series as well as MAGIC: the Gathering.

Define the audience (audience profile: age, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, geodemographic, psychographics, what sort of category they fit into; mainstream, alternative or niche).

The audience for The Arabian Nights varies from children aged from 4 - 15 towards the older generation to 50-60 years old, the audience ranges from both men and women, any sexual orientation. The category however for people who have read Arabian Nights is more of a niche in this generation.

Who owns the media production and how does it influence the product you are analysing?

It is hard to say who originally owned The Arabian Nights however people can speculate that the book was originally made to collect the oral folklore of the region. When it comes to analysis the nature of the book will have a profound influence on how I analyse this book. This is because I cannot look at a single tone set, or a single genre of the tales due to the book following genres of

fate and destiny, crime, horror, fantasy and even science fiction. Due to the books' expansive nature, I will only be selecting two tales that match my hypothesis.

Identify codes specific for each chosen media product and conventions common for all products, analyse and compare.

Arabian Nights has a specific feature of embedded narrative where within one tale another is began and even within those tales there can be another. This aspect of the Nights can be compared to many other books to replicate the embedded narrative, examples include: Frankenstein by Mary Shelly, The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer and Odyssey by Homer.

How does each chosen media product represent the world? (Groups, individuals, situations, stories etc.) Look at stereotyping, genres, representation of genres, race, social classes, positive and negative images etc.

The Arabian Nights presents the world in many ways within its many tales, most of the representation of the world being based with one foot in reality and another foot within extraordinary circumstances. In terms of stereotyping there are a few controversial representations of certain races and religions in the book, most notably being those of African descent and those that practice the Jewish faith.

Analysis 2 - Fantasy with Commentary in Wicked by Gregory Maguire

Who produced it?

Gregory Maguire is the author of Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.

What do I know about the author?

Gregory Maguire was born on June 9, 1954 in Albany, New York and went on to write the following novels in the Wicked Years series: Wicked, Son of a Witch, A Lion Among Men and Out of Oz.

What do I know about the historical/political context of the product? (What art movement, period ideas, political or worldview the chosen media product belongs to?

Maguire's novel was published in 1995 and features a lot of politically charged themes as well as deep themes of discrimination as well as having undertones of American culture. For example during the time Wicked would have been written, being the late 80s to early 90's, there was a lot of political unrest notably the Miner's Strike in the UK that lasted from 1984-1985 which could be linked to back to the novel in the characterisation of Nessarose Thropp, after she gains control of Munchkin Land, as the Margret Thatcher of the story since there are various references to her being referred to as a bitch as well as 'she's intolerably righteous'.

What are the influences?

The influences on Maguire's book feature the original book of the Wizard of Oz, written by L. Frank Baum as well as the film from 1939. There is also a hint he uses the world we live in as an influence as shown in an interview on Lightspeed Magazine. He was quoted on saying: "In other words, my

world is just as corrupt and just as redeemable as the real world in which we live. At least that’s my artist’s attempt."

What skills, production techniques, practises and knowledge have been used in the production of the chosen product? (Identify skills, production techniques, practices and knowledge, critically analyse and compare with similar products).

For this novel, the skills needed to produce this level of work would include: Generalised reading and writing skills that include sentence structure, the building of a narrative, etc. There is also the skill of interpretation of existing works.

What technologies have been used for the production and distribution and how they influenced the product?

One of the main ways the Wicked has gained significant prevalence after its initial publishing is the creation of the Musical that first hit Broadway in 2003 and the London West End in 2006. In regards to production and influences there is obviously the original Frank L Baum book that would helped produce the original novel. As well as the 1939 film.

Define the audience (audience profile: age, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, geodemographic, psychographics, what sort of category they fit into; mainstream, alternative or niche).

The audience for Maguire's work tend to be those aged from their late teens (16-19) to more mid adulthood (30-40) there also tends to be a higher number of those who are under the LGBT+ banner due to the nature of the book having various examples of LGBT themes in the interactions of Elphaba and Glinda as well as Maguire being a member of the LBGT community himself.

Who owns the media production and how it influences the product you are analysing?

The owner of the novel is Gregory Maguire and due to my personal beliefs regarding authors, his comments about his novel after its publishing will not affect how I analyse it due to Death of the Author (An essay regarding literature from the theorist Roland Barthes.)

Identify codes specific for each chosen media product and conventions common for all products, analyse and compare.

Wicked has a specific themes of guilt and blame, gender, family and of good vs evil but not in the mainstream way, the theme of good vs evil is explored mainly as the fight of good vs evil within a person which is explored most in the character of Elphaba. Looking at the theme of family we see that in the novel Elphaba's family is portrayed as dysfunctional and resentful. In comparison, in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone has themes of good vs evil as well as family. The theme of good vs evil is explored in a much more textbook manner in the vain of a hero versus a villain and the theme of family is less complex in its exploration.

How does each chosen media product represent the world? (Groups, individuals, situations, stories etc. ) Look at stereotyping, genres, representation of genres, race, social classes, positive and negative images etc.

In this novel there is a lot of representation of women in power throughout the novel which contrasts heavily to how Maguire presents Oz as a sexist and as a whole in the book, this can be seen

as both a positive and a negative aspect. There is also a grim world view that Maguire makes 'as corrupt and just as redeemable as real one'.

Analysis 3 - Modern Fantasy in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by J.K Rowling

Who produced it?

The author of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is J.K. Rowling.

What do I know about the author?

J.K Rowling is an author from Yate in Gloucestershire and was born on the 31st of July in 1965. She was the first Author to become a billionaire yet has lost the title of a billionaire from her charitable works over the years.

What do I know about the historical/political context of the product? (What art movement, period ideas, political or worldview the chosen media product belongs to?

Harry Potter was written during the 80s and some of the 90s where a lot of people title the 80s as a Golden Age for film, technology, television and general creativity however still held a few political incidents that would have been impossible to ignore, such as the Cold War, the Soviet-Afghan war, the Falklands War, various military coups as well as 7 terror attacks.

What are the influences?

J.K Rowling herself cites British Mythos as an influence for Harry Potter as well as a variety of other authors and their works however for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone the biggest influence is British Mythology for her, being quoted as saying: "I've taken horrible liberties with folklore and mythology, but I'm quite unashamed about that, because British folklore and British mythology is a totally bastard mythology. You know, we've been invaded by people, we've appropriated their gods, we've taken their mythical creatures, and we've soldered them all together to make, what I would say, is one of the richest folklores in the world, because it's so varied. So I feel no compunction about borrowing from that freely, but adding a few things of my own."

What skills, production techniques, practises and knowledge have been used in the production of the chosen product? (Identify skills, production techniques, practices and knowledge, critically analyse and compare with similar products).

For this novel, the skills needed to produce this level of work would include: Generalised reading and writing skills, research into inspirations and influences.

What technologies have been used for the production and distribution and how they influenced the product?

One of the best ways this novel has been distributed throughout the world includes the production of the Harry Potter Films under the company Warner Bros. There has also been the production of merchandise and attractions over the world, one of which being the Warner Brother's Studio Tour what features set piece and costumes from the Harry Potter Films. The merchandise and attractions wouldn't have influenced the production of the book, since the attractions were opened from June, 2010 onward. However there is an argument over the other 5 film's success pushing Rowling to make her final book The Deathly Hallows a two parter for revenue.

Define the audience (audience profile: age, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, geodemographic, psychographics, what sort of category they fit into; mainstream, alternative or niche).

The audience for Harry Potter is extremely diverse from young children (5-13) all the way to those aged 45+, people from all racial backgrounds, sexual orientations and class backgrounds and the category the audience for Harry Potter would fit comfortably in the mainstream.

Who owns the media production and how it influences the product you are analysing?

J.K Rowling owns the Harry Potter Franchise and there is a big discussion about her comments on the novel after it has been out in the public domain for almost 22 years since the first book was published, however due to my personal beliefs regarding the concept called Death of the Author, her comments will not influence the product I am analysing.

Identify codes specific for each chosen media product and conventions common for all products, analyse and compare.

In the novel there are a specific set of themes that carry over into Rowling's later works that include, family, friendship and the overarching concept of good vs evil. In terms of Family, we are introduced to the Dursleys who do not care for Harry however throughout the novel he finds that the real family are the friends and faculty at Hogwarts. Friendship plays a major role in the novel in the form of Harry's friendship with Ron and Hermione; there is also the overarching theme of Good vs Evil in the form of Harry's first encounter with Lord Voldemort in the final chapters of the novel. Two of the themes mentioned here can be compared to the themes in Wicked as explored above.

How does each chosen media product represent the world? (Groups, individuals, situations, stories etc.) Look at stereotyping, genres, representation of genres, race, social classes, positive and negative images etc.

In Harry Potter there are many ways the world is presented to the reader, in the Philosopher's Stone specifically, the world is presented as a hidden society with many secrets and this is portrayed as both a positive thing as well as a negative thing, the positives being the magic and the negatives being the danger that is around in the novel. The Hogwarts Houses are portrayed as positive groups for the students and even has a song about it within the chapter the houses are introduced.

CONCLUSION - Who/what was my inspiration? /Contextualisation of my study

What are similar media products and how my work related to them?

Similar products include the books analysed above this conclusion: Arabian Nights, Wicked and Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone, the books mentioned are all fantasy themed novels with

differing sub-genres, my story can be related to these books due to the fact all of them are in the fantasy genre as well as having aspects of magic and a hero’s journey.

How similar media products influence my project? How they shaped my project? (Thought and action)?

The most notable influence on my project was the tale of King Arthur as well as various forms of Celtic mythology, examples being the tale of Cú Chulaind from the Ulster Cycle. The influences came from characters such as Morgan le Fay, as well as the structure of the tale of King Arthur in a narrative sense this also extends to tales such as the Ulster Cycle. However, I did also have inspiration from Arabian Nights regarding the writing and the structure.

What did I learn from similar media products? (compare similar media products, how it influenced my perspective and ideas for the project – talk about both script and techniques)

From analysing the books above, I have learnt that the fantasy genre is not linked to a single set of qualities or tropes,

CHAPTER 3

Research Design

IntroductionThis chapter will be explaining my research question, exploring it in a more in-depth manner along with my target audience research, surveys. I hope that at the end of this chapter I will have narrowed down by research to finally figure out what makes a fantasy story.

Research QuestionsFor this project I will be asking myself the question: What is required to make a fantasy story? The reason I will be asking this is so that when it comes for me to write the story, I have a set of guidelines to ensure I am writing a fantasy story and not something unrelated to the genre.

Research Design Evolution

Subject I will be researching and survey monkey results:

The subject I shall be researching is what makes a fantasy story and to aid in my research I conducted a survey on the inner makings of a fantasy story, I send the survey out and gained less than stellar results below shows all the responses to the questions. However, due to the lack of follow up questions, structure and the lack of responses to make the survey come to an even number, I will be taking all of my results with a grain of salt.

As you can see from question one, the majority of my responses were the Lord of The Rings Franchise. Looking at this first response I can clearly tell that Tolkien's books are the first things in most people's minds.

I followed the question up with:

From the responses it appears that the most people prefer Urban Fantasy titles over the other sub genres. I feel as if I should have asked a follow up question about why the survey takers prefer that sub-genre.

The ‘Other’ option was:

From the responses to Question 3 the responses are varied and only two have overlapping aspects in their answers see Magic and being separate from the world we inhabit.

From the questionnaire above it looks like a majority of people ticked the Magical Elements and the Sub races section at 100% whilst no one ticked the Coming of Age plots section. I found this question's responses to be very interesting because I found that all of these sections appear in some fantasy novels/ franchises separate from novella.

The next and final question:

From the responses here people believe that the link between these four titles it the prevalence of magic.

I found from this questionnaire that most people believe that to make a fantasy story there needs to be elements of magic and or a world being detached from our own.

Overall the questionnaire was crafted to aid me in research and to gain an idea of people expect to see in fantasy stories. I admit the survey was crafted poorly and could have been worded and executed in a more polished fashion when dealing with these questions, such as actually following through on questions to expand on answers given briefly. However, I will take from these responses and keep them in mind when writing my story, crafting the audience profile and writing my pre-production section.

Target Audience

o Who is your target audience? Who are you aiming your product at?

My target audience is going to primarily be females aged 18 to 30, who are either in work or education. However, I expect to see an overlap with males aged 18 – 30 as well. I do also expect to see a majority of my target audience being members of the LGBT community due to the presence of representation that will be in my novel.

o What type of audience is it? Investigate the target demographic and record the type of media or entertainment they consume.

To research hat my target demographic consumes I have conducted a survey to see what kind of media thy consume when it comes to fantasy novels as well as what they enjoy doing.

Below shows the survey and all the responses.

Skills and Techniques

o Come up with the plan of what skills and techniques you will need to research to produce an effective, original and to near professional standard project.

Skills and Techniques Where can this be seen in my previous work?

An example of the skill used in professional work

How I will use the skill in my own project?

Narrative building Unit 9

The Trevelyan Conspiracy FMP

Narrative building has been used in all works of fiction. Examples that relate to my project include: The Odyssey as well as Arabian Nights.

When it comes to narrative building, I will be setting the scene for my story with a flashback to the past to give background on who Aurelion was and what he did.

Show don’t tell See link to the lesson here

Shows don’t tell has been used in various novels via the use of their dialogue as well as senses.

I am going to use Show don’t tell to aid in building tension in non-dialogue-based scenes, as well as dialogue heavy scenes in my story.I can also use the senses to convey the atmosphere of the scenes, that will be written in real time, as well as to convey tension if the need arises. I will also show my characters emotions through the use of actions and strong verbs as well as dialogue.

Perspective See link to the lesson here

Most fantasy novels are set in a third person perspective, which can be seen in the following books that I have researched, such as Harry Potter, The Eye of Argon, Wicked as well as Eragon.

When it comes to perspective, I will be keeping my work contained in a third person perspective to allow myself to convey the world around the characters I have made. The reason why is so the world can be explored further and with more detail.

Sentence structure Unit 9, Short sentences are used to help build and convey tension

In every story, every book even there is sentence structure to make the writing interested, investing and add to the effect of what is being written.

In my story I will be using sentence structure to convey tension in my chapters as well as to help add a pacing to the story.

o Experiment with range of skills yourself (primary)

Here shows my experimentation with the prologue

Prologue experimentation

With the prologue I experimented with a historical fantasy genre.

The thunderous echo of the Nord's war horn bellowed across the ocean of flashing steel, breaking bones and fallen soldiers all under the banners of Aurelion the Rebel King and Hjaal Oath-Slayer, Norse King of the West. At the sound of the horn, the hulking warriors threw up their shield wall to allow the shock raiders to get in position as the rebel natives charged at the wall, in attempts to shatter the formation with a move that was a pure gamble on Aurelion's behalf. Men bashed at the shields with their own whilst thrusting forth with any weapon they had on their person at this point.

At the second bellow of Jarl Yorgrim's horn, the Norse shield wall burst open and the raiders charged the rebels with a deep mighty roar. The axes were raised to hook and drag down the Celtic shields throwing the rebel forces off guard with such risky assault. Yet it seemed to have paid off. The rebels' formation scattered, and the raiders threw down their axes across the warriors before dragging them towards the shield wall that had been thrown up once more to defend. The discordant sound of shattering and slashing rang throughout the field along with the strangled cries of the native men.

At the heralding of cries, the surviving rebels rushed out of the murderous paths the raiders were taking. One man had run almost fifty yards to sound off a roar of his own. "SAETHWYR!" Bellowed he to a unit hidden from the seemingly all-seeing eye of Hjaal's men. Within minutes above a hill, the hidden revealed themselves and drew back their bows, aiming down at the carnage the Norse were leaving in their wake. Multiple breaths were taken before a second cry erupted "RYDDHAU" And then the arrows were loosed. A shadow blocked out the sun as the Norse continued on their work only to have a cry of warning reach them all but too late. A thousand arrows rained down upon them as furiously as the rain from a storm. There was no discrimination as to who was impaled upon the blood-drenched soil marred by those who had fallen. A painting of depravity was canvased as the flash storm subsided.

A valourous cheer was let up at the impalement of the raiders whilst the fatigued rebels rushed back to end the suffering of the impaled before the Norse turned and retreated only a short distance to stratagise with their leader. Hjaal stood looking over a map of the kingdom of Ponwys.

When writing this piece I received feedback that included the fact the piece was not an accurate representation of the historical fantasy genre due to the lack of genre conventions needed to classify this as a fantasy story. The conventions that were lacking included the Heroes Journey which cannot be seen in the piece at all. I felt as if the piece needed further crafting for me to grasp the genre properly.

Production Research

o Explain what and how: For the production I will be researching various aspects of my genre as well as skills, characters used, animal habits as well as injuries on the NHS to help keep my writing grounded as well as interesting for my target audience, to do this I will look through my chapter structure and see what stands out

o People needed for the production/availability

Regarding the production only one person will be needed for it all is myself due to being the author of this novel excerpt.

o Research production roles that you will need to carry out and how to do it successfully (how: the internet, media books, etc.)

The production roles I will be undertaking includes, the primary researcher, the author as well as the chief editor, and when researching online I have found that I will need the following resources to effectively

o Production schedule

o Production (techniques, hardware, workflow) ( how: research what you need / how: try it yourself)

For the production of this project I will need to use the skills and techniques noted down in the skills and techniques section of this project, I will need to use google docs to write my story in a format I would be able to access anywhere.

o Post -production (Edit, colour correction, VFX, etc. ( how: read, watch how other people/professionals do it, try it yourself)

When it comes to post-production I will need to edit my work, put it into an online flipbook as well as create my front cover, to achieve this I will need to sit down and scan through what I have written as well as ask two friends to help me edit my woke. I will also sit down with someone to develop the flip html to create an online book.

CHAPTER 4

Research Findings

In this chapter I will showcase what I found when researching ‘What makes a fantasy story’ I conducted a small investigation into three books and or stories that have a fantasy theme. For the sake of argument, I will take two of the books I have analysed before as well as four new books.

I will go through my survey questions and make two main categories: Story Structure and Genre Conventions/Tropes. I will take the tales I will be analysing and I will break them down to see if I can find a running theme through each book that qualifies it as a fantasy novel/story. I will later give my own thoughts on the process and take from the findings to aid in writing my own story.

Below is the table I created to look at the six books I analysed for similarities.

Above shows the table with the comparisons made.

Data analysis What strategies did you use to analyse your data? What did you find out?

When it came to analysing my work in the table, I sat and simply looked for similarities and differences as well as checking to see if the storylines followed a Hero’s journey, I noted all of this down before I put it into a table.

There is a few things to note in this table that I didn't expand on it, however when it comes to the Hero's Journey, which dates all the way back to The Odyssey, is that the structure has been used everywhere else in fantasy since then as a tool for us, the reader, to engage and sympathise with the hero's struggle. There is also a running theme of hitting the tropes of the Hero's Journey in each of these books such as: villains, mentor, call to action, reluctant heroes and so on.

Conclusion - How did the research help me with my project?

In conclusion, when constructing this research report, I initially sought to find out 'What makes a fantasy story' so I could better understand how I could structure my own fantasy story. So I first analysed three different books that share themes of fantasy, however explore it in different ways. I went in depth on the themes, audience and how the product represents the world.

I later worked on a survey to ask people on what aspects of a fantasy story truly qualify it as such, I only received five responses however I used the responses along with my secondary research to give me an idea on what people thought made a fantasy story most of the responses leaned towards aspects of magic, and worlds detached from our own. I took this to heart and later constructed a table with to compare the way six different fantasy stories. The categories for comparison included genre conventions, Structure and what made it a fantasy story. I learnt that the overarching similarity through those six books was the setting being detached from our reality. I then worked on

my prologue using what I had learnt from the survey and the table regarding the fantasy genre, after receiving my feedback.

The research also helped me when it came to deciding the final idea for this project. Before the final idea I had only one other concept regarding the genre of the piece. I was originally going to write a historical fantasy piece in attempts to challenge my skills already, however due to how constricting that idea was going be in a creative sense as well as a time keeping sense due to all the research needed to create a historically accurate narrative, I decided to instead create the world of Alterim and start all over again.

After making this decision, writing up my prologue to fit my new idea as well as looking back on my research: I can come to conclude that ‘what makes a fantasy story’ is having a story take place in a world detached from what we are entirely used to with added aspects of either magic and linear yet immersive narratives.

CHAPTER 5

My Project: The Quest for Dawnbringer

Introduction In this chapter I have taken all of the research into account and have split this chapter up into four subheadings, pre-production, production, post-production and presentation. I will showcase the steps that lead to the completion of my novel excerpt.

Pre-Production

This section will show the pre-production I have done regarding this project, that will include my production schedule, my pitch as well as a chapter structure for my goal of five chapters and a prologue. The word count goal is 25,000 words, averaging 5,000 words for each chapter.

Due to the length of the podcast the relevant information regarding my project can be found at this time stamp 11:55 – 17:54

Target Audience

My target audience is going to primarily be females aged 18 to 30, who are either in work or education. However, I expect to see an overlap with males aged 18 – 30 as well. I do also expect to see a majority of my target audience being members of the LGBT community due to the presence of

representation that will be in my novel. Below shows a survey I conducted to see what kind of things they enjoy doing as well as what fantasy books they read already to see.

Production Production Schedule

DevelopmentFor the developmental stage of this project I noted down everything regarding the world, characters and the relics for the story I plan to write, below I will link to the word document and show the work I have done. For feedback that impacted me see the evaluation section in Chapter 7.

Post-production Describe post post-production of your project.

The post-production of my project mainly encompasses two things, editing the chapters I have put up and creating the front cover of the book in Photoshop.

Assess your production and post-production process. Describe, and critically analyses any production problems and the solution you experienced.

During the production and pre-production, I faced only one glaring problem that set back my work and prevented the five chapter start I sought to achieve, which was writers block, regardless of

knowing what would be involved in the chapters, I had an issue on getting from one event to the next . I experienced the block when attempting to start writing Chapter 2, I attempted to overcome the block by doing two things. Rewriting the start of the chapter and creating a playlist for writing this story which will be linked below. I found that creating a playlist helped a great deal because it let me immerse myself in the world, I had made.

Presentation In this chapter, I will be presenting my story in the format of a pdf due to the original idea of using an online flipbook being far too time consuming regardless of how fitting it would be for the project as well as the target audience. So, to save time I will be presenting my work in the pdf.

Below shows the link to the pdf that has been embedded in the book image:

CHAPTER 7

Project Evaluation

In this chapter I will be evaluating the work I have done for this project by answering the following questions, as seen below:

Introduce the project in your words

The project is an excerpt of a novel I wish to write more of in the future that has been inspired by Celtic mythos. The synopsis to the book is as follows:The clans of Morweness have given up hope on finding their lost king, Aurelion and now they have decided that a new ruler must take his place by questing for his relics. After a heated debate, the clans of Drekarè, Iolaire and Rhaelhart offered up a champion; an eccentric druid, a stout warrior and a patient huntress. However, on this quest the three champions will face various challenges and will discover that what they all believed to be true is about to change.

List five strengths and five weaknesses in your final design

My strengths included:

• My passion for this project, that can be seen in the developmental stages of the work as well.

• The amount of planning I had done around the development of the project as well as the research.

• One of the biggest strengths to my project included the fact that I focused heavily on the quality of my work rather than the quantity.

• My story telling ability within the prologue and first two chapters• The depth I went into during the analysis, as well as the target audience research. • My use of language in the piece as well as my knowledge of genre conventions were big

strengths regarding my work, as well as my characterisation and setting.

My Weaknesses however included:

• My overall time management was rather poor due to the fact I did not clarify what the deadline was at the start of my project`.

• The size of the project was far too large for the time I had been given to produce the chapters.

• Another weakness was the fact I failed to get regular feedback on my work so I could log it for this evaluation.

• I believe another weakness was the fact I focused too heavily on the research and not enough on the actual project which can be attributed to the first weakness of poor time management

• My largest weakness regarding this project however was the fact that parts of my research failed to look into one of the biggest aspects of fantasy, that being the Hero’s Journey.

Was there a theme for the design ideas? Can you describe it? Can you reference any influences here? - art movements, designers, media companies/campaigns, etc.

There were a few themes when designing my story as well as the characters and the locations; the strongest influences that can be seen in the work I have produced would have to be Celtic mythos and history in general as well as the fantasy action roleplaying game Skyrim.

This can be seen in the fact the magic system, presented in Chapter 1, so far is made up of Irish Gaelic words that have been flipped backwards. Skyrim’s influence ends at the idea of various holds having a leader however being led generally by a high king, as well as being the source of some of the character names for the Haugrs in the Prologue. There is also the various traditions in fantasy such as the use of the hero’s journey as a narrative structure, the use of an overarching quest, epic battles as well as an unlikely band of heroes. I also drew inspiration from the more contemporary LGBT issues to add a twist on the story and the characters.

What experiments and exploration did you do? How did it affect your development? In this project I explored what makes a fantasy story that can be seen in the research chapters above. I also experimented with writing the prologue in the form of a historical fantasy. Attempting to write this prologue affected my development due to the fact I found out almost immediately that I would have to do too much research to ensure historical accuracy and that it would take up far too much time in the development section. In terms of the actual crafting, I rarely explored word choice and syntax however as shown above I did explore perspective in a lesson given to me by my tutor, that can be seen in Chapter 1. In terms of my development the exploration did affect my development in terms of selecting a perspective to craft my story in.

Find a similar type of design publication - place it next to your own - what comparisons/difference can you identify?

For this section I will be comparing my work to The Death of Arthur due to the fact it was an influence on my story. The general similarities and differences:

Some similarities include the fact that both have legendary weapons wielded by legendary kings, including a battle that determines the fate of the land, see the Strife of Camelot as well as the prologue to my story.

Differences however include the fact the sub fantasy genre for The Death of Arthur is a romance as much as it is a legend, whilst the Quest for Dawnbringer is not a romantically charged book, it is more along the lines of generalised fantasy. Similarities and differences in the theme:

Some similarities include the theme of loyalty as well as strength and skill, which can be seen in Chapter one of my story as well as Chapter two

The differences in the theme includes the fact that romance it not a large plot point at all in The Quest for Dawnbringer, whilst in The Death of Arthur it is one of the central plot points and involves Ser Lancelot and Guinevere.

What were the key areas of development in this project?

The key area of development regarding this project included the booklet regarding all of my development which can be seen in the production section of Chapter 5. Another key area of development due to the time spent on it was the background research for the project as you can see in the previous chapters.

Review your proposal - what changed, what developments did you make, did you manage to complete everything you set out to achieve?

The proposal was an ambitious piece that was subject to a large and notable change, that was the shortening of a five chapter start to two chapters and the opening of chapter three. It is a notable reduction in the work I sought to achieve, however even with the reduction I do believe I completed the bare minimum of what I wanted to achieve. I gave my target audience a start to novel.

What did the client think of your concept? How did that make you feel?

Below shows comments made by a friend who encompasses the target audience.

49

Other comments made by friends who had read the story included:‘I love your way of describing the scene and how vivid your writing is. Despite the long paragraphs, it's also paced incredibly well - it doesn't drag on, but it feels like a long battle that's been going on for ages. Your dialogue is also on point. Characters have a clear voice and it sounds authentic for the time. It reflects the tone of the story, too, and I can imagine their life outside of the story, especially Aurelion's. And to drive home the vivid imagery point, I can easily imagine myself in the battle, terrified in the middle of everything. It all feels real and plausible’

Another comment contains feedback regarding my paragraphs. ‘I'd like the paragraphs to be shortened down if possible - more concise and to the point. It'll probably help keep the page count down, making life easier for you as well as make it easier for people to read. Blocks of text is quite daunting, even for those who love to read. You also wrote 'spin' instead of 'spine' at one point.’

When reading through the comments I feel as if this is a viable project that I would be able to work on for much longer and the comments invigorate me to continue on to create this a full story.

What could you do to adapt the work produced to improve and develop it?

I believe that if I took my time to flesh the opening chapters and the opening prologue, I would be able to immerse the reader further into the story as well as what is going on in the scene. I could have done this by adding more of the senses into the scenes to show and not tell, for example the scene during the battle of Draigdall could have used more immersion regarding the senses as well as a person’s feelings.

Is the final work appropriate for the needs of the project? Does it sufficiently answer your brief?Personally, I believe the final work is not appropriate for the project needs due to the fact I was unable to finish what I said I would in the project proposal. The work doesn’t come to the five-chapter standard I have set out for myself. However, if I were to look at this project objectively then I would have to say that the project I would say that the work I have produced has accomplished the main goal of giving my target audience a glimpse of what I wish to accomplish in the future.

Reflect on your pitch to the board; how did you feel about it before? Did it go better or worse than you expected? What was the feedback from the client/lecturer? What do you think you could improve next time?

Before this evaluation I believe my pitch was serviceable in what I hoped to achieve, I explained what I wanted to achieve clearly and in the podcast you can hear the back and forth I had with my fellow students. Looking back on the pitch now, I believe I could have pre planned what I was going

50

to say before speaking, next time I believe I would prepare a little longer when it comes to what I would say during a pitch. The time is speak has been mentioned in the Pitch Discussion section.

Did it go better or worse than you expected?

I believe regardless of the writer’s block that set my work back the overall project went better than I had expected.

What was the feedback from your lecturer?

Below shows images of the feedback that has been given to me regarding this project, specifically the research section as well as the prologue and the first two chapters, With the comments shown below I agreed with them, I have taken the comments to heart as well as made the edits needed in regards to the plot and the grammatical errors.

What do you think you could improve next time?

I believe the main improvement for this project would be time management as well as keeping my project realistic and plausible. I feel that if I keep myself grounded and on a tight time schedule, I could produce work that is up to a standard that I can be proud of quality wise. However, I believe that the work I have produced in this project is up to a higher standard than what I would usually do. There is also some other improvements regarding knowing when to stop researching things and just getting on with the writing of the story. Another thing I could improve on next time includes the crafting of the plot using the narrative aid of the Heroes Journey, this will help me decide on what characters will be the reluctant hero or the arc typical hero or the willing hero.

How will you progress with novel?

When it comes to progressing the novel, I plan to write more of it after this project is over, I will have a more lenient schedule when it comes to writing and I will aim for making updates at least three time a week. When the sufficient number of chapters have been written I will be pursuing a chance to publish the novel.

When considering publication, I will be avoiding self-publication due to the fact you have to sum up the costs yourself. However, when looking at traditional publishing firms for a majority of them, I will need to write a cover letter about myself and include a synopsis of my story. However, some firms will ask for the first three chapters of your story whilst others ask for the full manuscript.
