  • 3Welcome to the June edition of the Amber Valley Voice

and what a damp summer it has been so far...except for

the brief glimpse of sunshine that seems so long ago!!

I have been told that there was a fantastic response to

the St James Church Diamond Jubilee Celebrations and

the Derbyshire Arts Festival, where many people

ventured out and about, despite the pouring rain!

This month, look out for the dotted lines and scissors

which indicate a voucher...they are spread out throughout the magazine and

are exclusively available for our readers. Also, theres lots of exciting things to

do on pages 6 & 7, if you can tear yourself away from the summer of sports!!

Finally, we have a couple of bits of juicy info to flag

up...firstly, Ripley Badminton Club are looking for new

members, so dont delay join today and secondly, support the

local cat charity, who are hosting an event see pages 22 & 24

    for more details.

    Book Review

    Dark Matter by Michelle Paver

As anyone who has lain awake in the middle of the night knows, the dark plays terrible

tricks. Imagine six months of it, dark, day and night, freezing and alone or are you? - in a

    cabin in the Arctic wilderness.

Dark Matter, by Michelle Paver, is a ghost story a genre its dificult to

get right. M.R James was a past master, Sarah Waters produced the goods

more recently and now Michelle Paver is another to add to the list. Its

one of those you want to inish but youre not sure if reading it in a silent

house before bedtime is the right thing to do if you want to sleep after-

    wards.

The story, set just before WW2 centres around a chirpy young man who

is offered and jumps at, the chance to join an Arctic expedition. His de-

light at the land of the midnight sun starts to waver, and unease set in as

the dark winter closes in and circumstances reduce the party of ive who set out, to one

    him.

The mental and physical isolation he faces are compounded by something outside the

cabin. Something he thinks he must be imagining. Until he starts to think maybe he isnt....

Michelle Pavers descriptions of the cold and the ice and the dark are really convincing

and they should be shes spent months in different parts of the Arctic so she knows her

    stuff.

Yes, its the middle of summer. But if youre looking for something to give you a little

thrill chill, perhaps this is it...

I spoke with Phil from Leabrooks this

month about the brilliant job that Paul at

DB Builders had completed on his Garden

    Wall and Patio Paving.

Phil said The Garden Wall and Patio was

completed in about 2 weeks, which included

digging the footings, back illing and laying

the wall and patio. The rain held up pro-

ceedings but he came back as soon as he

was able to point the wall and patio and he

always came when he said he would, was

on time and took all his rubbish away with

him. The cost was very reasonable and I am

really happy with the job and would recom-

    mend him to anyone.

Dont forget to mention the Amber Valley Voice when responding to Ads

Amber Valley have been successfully running the Befriending Service since 1998,

with the aim of providing a friendly trained volunteer to visit isolated and vul-

nerable people living in their own homes to offer companionship and support.

One lady who has found the service to be very beneicial is Mary aged 84 years.

Mary irst received the Home from Hospital ser-

vice from Amber Valley CVS when she came out

    of hospital in February 2010.

Home from Hospital is a short term support ser-

vice that enables clients to adjust being back at

home. After having the service for six weeks it

was agreed both with Mary and the befriender

that both parties wanted to continue the weekly

visits. Mary and her Befriender Joan, a retired

teacher, have been together ever since. Mary has unfortunately been back in to

hospital and when she came out she didnt go back to her lat, but into her new

one, this was all a bit strange at irst but everyone worked really hard to get her

new lat ready for her. Mary feels very happy in her new place and is very glad

that Joan could come and visit her there.

Mary is very lucky to have a very supportive family who visit regularly as Mary

inds it very dificult to get out and about, but having another person who is not

her family also has its appeal, We talk non-stop and I like to ind out about what

Joan has been up to Mary said. Two years on and Mary still says it makes my

day, I look forward to Joan coming, and dont you dare think of taking her away

fromme as I would miss it if it didnt happen

So why become a Befriender, well for Joan her experience is: - its about giving

something back and I like to think that I can make a difference to someones life, I

cant believe that I have been coming so long, it doesnt feel like over two years

and we still have lots to talk about

Amber Valley CVS are urgently looking for volunteers to act as Befriender's to

visit someone once a week, for a chat and to help brighten a clients day. As little

as one hour of your time could make all the difference. We have a number of peo-

ple in the Amber Valley area who are waiting for someone to talk to. If you would

like to knowmore about this service and how you can help, please ring 01773

512076 or call in to Amber Valley CVS, Market Place Ripley.

If you are able to give as little as one hour to volunteer to

Befriend someone out in your local community,

please give us a call on 01773 512076.

In this day and age the main focal point in a home is still the heat source whether it is Gas,

Electric ires or wood burning stoves.

Here at Belper Gas Showrooms we are proud to say that we have some of the most eficient

gas ires on the market today with the likes of NU-Flame and other main manufacturers

boasting eficiency ratings of 74.4 percent (BSI Veriied) on Gas ires giving a fantastic 4.7k

of heat. As if that wasnt enough we are also the sole supplier in Derbyshire of THE MOST

EFFICIENT LOG BURNING STOVE IN THE WORLD; The Burley Fireball.

We have been dealers for Burley products for many years now and we were delighted when

we were approached by them to be stockists for this amazing product.

The technology behind this is called ireball technology, which is achieved by the logs going

through 4 combustion processes creating a vortex giving a massive 89.1% eficiency, which

makes the stove burn wood very simply and cheaply.

Just to illustrate the eficiency of these Stoves during product approval, when the European

test house was measuring the emissions from the Burley stove, the combustion was so

clean they assumed that their gas analyser had broken and sent it away for recalibration.

Feel free to pop in when youre passing and see what we have on show.

This month I spent an afternoon at the

loungewith Claire and Lynsay, where I

had a Hopi Ear Candle and Indian Head

Massage treatment and a wash and blow

dry. The environment was so relaxing

and calming and Claire was so friendly,

she instantly put me at ease. The Hopi Ear

Candle was fantastic and cleared my head

and it was followed by the Head Massage,

in which Claire ascertained my hair type

and identiied a gorgeous oil which smelt

just like lemon drizzle cake...I am partial

to the odd dessert!! Once Claire had

inished, I was handed over to the magic

hands of Lynsay who worked miracles on

my now oily hair! I felt a million dollars

and although I have never been partial to

spending hours in a salon.I could easily

spend a day in the lounge!!

Park in the free car parking spaces that are available in Alfreton Park

Begin the walk at on the soil bridlepath near the park entrance that runs down the

right hand side of the park. Follow the bridlepath around the outside of the park to-

wards Alfreton Hall. Continue right at cross roads around the back of Alfreton Hall

where you join up with Church Street.

Carry on Chruch Street past the entrance to the Leisure Centre and take the next left

    towards St Martins Church.

At the church follow the path left that takes you towards the entrance and then take

the flag stone path around the outside of the church . Cross the stile and you will find a

number of possible paths. Head left taking the path with a hedge on the left. At the

end of the long straight path take the track that runs directly across a large field.

In the corner of the field is a stile and car-

ry on the path with the hedge on your

right. Cross another stile at the end of this

field and turn left and you will cross one

more stile before you reach the road.

Head right on the pavement for about 50

meters and then cross, using a stile to join

a path that will take you down the side of

a long field with the hedge on your right.

As you near the end of the field take the

second gap in the hedge and pass through

a small wooded area before emerging out

    onto the golf course.

Head across two fairways, taking care to

avoid golfers. Head left around the wood-

ed area until you reach a path on the left

that will take you into the Oakerthorpe

    Nature Reserve.

In the reserve head straight ahead, across

a path that becomes boarded and then

takes you out of the reserve up to a gate.

Carry on past the houses until the path

    brings you to the B6013.

This month we have bringing you a walk that is a little longer than our previ-

ous walks but with the improving weather it is a perfect time to put a few

hours aside and get the most of our beautiful local countryside. This walk has

lots of opportunities to let your dogs off the lead taking care to ensure their

safety. Remember If you have a favourite walk of your own why not share it

with us by email at [email protected] or by calling Emily on 01773 604178 or 07891 639638

7 Mile Circular Walk From Alfreton Park to South Wingfield

Another great walk for you and your dog it offers a range of scenery and plenty

of off-lead walking. The route is fairly long taking about 3 1/2 hours. It is fairly

undulating with some small uphill sections and the terrain is mixed with some

sections which may be best tackled with a sturdy pair of boots.

chooses to follow this route and encourages all walkers to obey all byelaws and signs and to respect the

area they are walking in, ensuring they pick up all dog mess and obey the countryside code at all times.

Cross the road and turn left. At the post box follow the footpath sign across the grass

and head to the far corner of the car park at Hollowbank House. Take the path round

to the left and uphill. Climb the steps and follow the path as it takes you alongside a

field with the wood on your left.

At the end of the field, heading downhill until you reach a gate. Turn right onto the

farm track that takes you back alongside the wood and the railway track.

Cross the stile near the farm house then pass under the railway via a low tunnel - Mind

Your Head - Follow the path over the footbridge and past the sports ground. Go through

the gate, over another field and bridge. Cross the road and head right onto Holme Lane.

Turn right and follow the road until you reach the church. Take the footpath through

the churchyard and through a gate on the far side of the cemetery.

Carry on with the hedge on your right to a stile then turn right, heading uphill towards

a footbridge over the railway track.

Turn left and follow the path through several stiles and gates until it brings you to Dale

    Hill where you turn right.

At the junction cross the road taking the footpath that leads across six fields until you

reach a pylon. Turn right and re-join the track that takes you back to the church where

you can reverse the route back to your car.

Dont forget to mention the Amber Valley Voice when responding to Ads

Many women may prefer to have a slimmer tummy and we usually know the cause of one

that bulges a little too much. But what if we genuinely have no idea why we have devel-

oped a belly bulge? What if it just gradually appeared, and rather than bloating up one day

then down the next-which may suggest irritable bowel syndrome- it seems more of a con-

stant fullness? You may be considering going up a size in clothes, or feel generally bloated

and your face may be fuller than it was.

In most cases, it is simply more calories or less activity, or both, but if you really analyse

your lifestyle and cannot see a change, and if you have noticed other symptoms too, it may

be worth investigating a little further.

One diseases whose symptoms can easily be ignored is ovarian cancer. It is non-speciic

and signs can easily be brushed aside. As well as bloating, symptoms include pelvic, ab-

dominal or back pain and feeling full quickly. Sometimes there are urinary symptoms or

bowel changes and extreme fatigue. It is easy to look on the internet and worry yourself,

but an experienced clinician eg a good GP or nurse, can determine if your symptoms war-

rant further investigation. However, if symptoms persist despite reassurance, you need to

return for a second opinion- you know your body best.

The charity 'Target Ovarian Cancer' is one

which helps raise awareness and helps clini-

cians to be more alert. 'The Eve Appeal' is an-

other which raises money to further research

and raise awareness, into gynaecological can-

cers generally. With 1:50 women of all ages

contracting ovarian cancer, thats the 5th

most common cancer, it cannot be ignored

and because it is so vague, it has often pro-

gressed further than other cancers before

help is sought, making treatment dificult.

At About Backs &Bones we are having a Mad

Hatters Tea Party to raise money and particu-

larly, to raise awareness about this disease.

Not only that, we are offering a free 20 min

consultation with an osteopath or physiother-

apist for anyone who has aches and pains and

a 15 voucher for those new to the clinic, with

5 being donated to 'Target Ovarian Cancer'.

So keep Sun 24th June free at 3pm and come

and support us at 506 Dufield Rd, Allestree,

DE22 2 DL. Come and have a chat about your health, especially muscle and joint problems

or questions about Ovarian Cancer or at least come and have some afternoon tea!

    DVD Review -

    The Artist(PG)

It is exceedingly unusual and generally not very complimentary to say that a ilm is

behind the times but in this case, it is a compliment!

This ilm is essentially a black and white silent movie which takes us back to the days

of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton along with other greats of

the silver screen who managed to convey a compelling story

    without saying a single word.

Set in 1927 Hollywood, George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) is a

mega star of the screen who leads a seemingly perfect life and

wants for nothing. That is until two signiicant things happen in

his life along come the talkies and he meets wannabe actress

Peppy Miller (Bernice Bejo). We follow George and his fall from

grace as he struggles to overcome his pride and come to terms

with a world that has moved on without him .

This ilm is clearly deserving of the accolades it has received and is very entertaining

and well acted, although arguably the star of the movie is The Dog (Uggie). However,

as is often the case with anything with such hype surrounding it, The Artist inds it

dificult to live up to such high expectations. If you try and take it as it comes and ig-

nore the surrounding furore this will be a highly enjoyable watch.

    Top Tip

If you want long stemmed sweet peas tie them in to their supports and remove side

shoots and tendrils rather than relying on them to pull the plant upwards

This month you should reduce clusters of apples or pears to single fruit. It seems a

shame, but youll inish up with stronger healthier fruit in the end.

Deadhead repeat lowering roses and other

plants it stops them trying to set seed so they

concentrate on producing more lowers in the

    hope of producing more seed.

Nows the time to cut back old hellebore foliage

but leave the seed heads in place. When theyre

ripe (the pods will burst open) plant them and see

what comes up next year like aquilegia, theyre almost always different from the

    parent plant.
