The three-day trade and consumer show is slated for April 11th, 12th and 13th 2014, with the addition of a second hall expected to be confirmed in July, when the first draft show floorplan is unveiled. AMD Magazine publisher and Big Bike Europe expo organizer Robin Bradley said that “the issue of when a concept such as Big Bike Europe would be best held was always one of the important factors to research, and by the time the original launch announcement was made in August 2011, we had already spent two years taking industry feedback. “The first issue to resolve was whether to stage the show late in the year or to go for a Spring timing. There are still plenty of good reasons why something like a November or December date would be worth considering, but the weather and crowded calendar at that time of the year definitely make a Spring date, closer to the cash cycle of the market, the better option. “We had originally looked at dates between February and May, and the one that we always favored was the second weekend of April. That date avoids any other major show commitments for exhibitors (on either side of the Atlantic) and is one on which Easter very rarely falls. “However, for this first year we were constrained by venue availability. Once we had seen the hall 10, 11 and 12 complex at Messe Essen (Messe Ost) we were hugely impressed by the nature of the space, but were forced into taking a risk with a May date that coincided with a public holiday in that region of Germany and various other industry and consumer distractions. “Three weeks before this year’s first annual Big Bike Europe we were informed that the date we originally wanted had become available for 2014 and on a moving forward basis. “While there are a slew of reasons why first year attendance was at the lower end of our expectations, not least the late start to the season meaning that dealerships had only just started to get busy, we have to assume that the date we chose must have had something to do with it. “Either way, there is no question that our new date will make it easier for authorized/franchised dealers and independent shop owners to spare the time for a show visit, and although only four weeks earlier, those four weeks punch above their weight in terms of the buying and selling cycle of the market.” Altogether some 1,000 plus industry professionals attended Big Bike Europe this year, and based on the pre-registration scheme, at least 187 franchised dealers and independent custom shops were represented. Added to that, some 40 or 50 of the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building competitor community were dealers, and with exhibitors directly inviting dealers, and a handful who paid to get in, total “dealer attendance” for the first Big Bike Europe expo is being put at around 250 shops – plus a dozen or so international parts and accessory importers/distributors. S IXmonths ago I was able to report that the parts and accessoryindustry had done “okay” in 2012 – profits had been betterthan in 2011, largely down to continued good housekeeping,

and sales had been generally up, albeit mostly by low single digits.Compared to where our market has been during the past five or six years,

anything that suggested stability and sustainability had to be taken as a positiveand something that could be built on.That general perception continued in the feedback I got at the V-Twin Expo

this year. Very few (if any) of the exhibitors I spoke to reported a continued lossof sales in 2012, with most actually quite bullish about where they were at incycle terms. Realism about sales was balanced by relief that the bottom of themarket did indeed appear to have been traversed.Since then the Spring selling season appears to have gone reasonably well for

most of the people I have been speaking to – although the crazy weather patternsthat now appear to be the new default for the northern hemisphere have mademonth-on-month comparisons difficult. Some traditionally strong months have been weak

this year, but it appears to have been a pattern ofdelayed rather than lost sales, with vendors in Europeand the United States mostly telling me that sales sofar this year (to mid-June) are up on the same periodof 2012.It has to be said that performance, bolt-on and

servicing/tuning remain the bread and butter as the market continues to fall backon staples rather than heavy duty industrial grade customization.

I ndeed, that pattern has been massively self-evident in the trends seen atcustom bike shows on both sides of the Atlantic in the past 24 months, andnot least at the recent 10th annual AMD World Championship of Custom BikeBuilding at the Big Bike Europe expo a few weeks ago. The trend towards ‘garage-builds’ had already been well set ever since ground-up chrome and paint festbuilds peaked in 2005 and 2006.The widespread diversification of custom platforms has reflected the new

reality of price-point change that custom bike builders are having to respond to.In Europe, the days when customer-ordered custom builds hovered around the

Harley CVO price point and north from there have been replaced by price pointsbetween 15,000 € and 30,000 € with interesting implications. With concerns about the market’s demographics re-emerging (despite Harley-

Davidson’s continuing success in building youth rider market share withoutradically refined metal), some solace can be derived from a new price pointrealism as it allows twenty and thirty-somethings to engage in a way that waseither previously prohibitive or finance dependent. As we saw at Essen in May, one of the interesting side-effects of this trend is

that while current generation custom builds are less blinged-out than waspreviously the case, ingenuity and craftsmanship is being stimulated by aDarwinian "survival of the affordable effect".Builders are having to be cleverer and smarter and develop less expensive but

nonetheless motivating and inspiring ideas that allow shallower pockets to stillaspire to individuality and great design and engineering. The umbilical cord that used to connect parts and accessory catalogs to custom

bike show winners is therefore being stretched thin, but on the upside custombuilders are providing a pathway for new entrants at a time when downturn logicwould make that tough.

I n the long term this can only be good for parts and accessory designers andmanufacturers. The value of late model and used motorcycle buyers to theaftermarket has always been based upon this entry price point.Harley-Davidson’s success in ring-fencing bling-based aftermarket builds with

the development of a CVO program that lives in the $30-40,000 range forcedaftermarket custom bike builders to reach for choppeddown, sparsely designed bobber entry points ataround half the cost. The benefit of hindsight now shows us that that was

always destined to fail once credit dried up, but whatwe are now seeing in the custom build market is aresetting of the rules in such a way that riders, still withsome twenty to thirty years of increasing buying power

and deepening engagement, will replace the lower median percentiles of thedemographic bell curve that would otherwise be lost. That is not to say that five, ten or fifteen years from now we are going to see

a re-emergence of the same bubble that burst so spectacularly on us six yearsago, but it does point to there still being life in the desire of consumers to ownmotorcycles of character.High-mileage riding accessories, performance and tuning products, service and

workshop revenues and bolt-on parts and accessories will be the beneficiaries inthe long-term, but don’t expect cause and effect to look or be the same as it wasin the pre-Lehman decade.

P OLARIS Industries hasreported record firstquarter net income of

$75.5 million for the quarterended March 31, 2013. Bycomparison, 2012 first quarternet income was $60.1 million.Net sales for the first quarter2013 totaled $745.9 million, which represents an increase of11 percent from last year’s firstquarter sales of $673.8 million. “We are pleased that consumers

and enthusiasts around the worldcontinued to make Polaris their brandand product of choice during the firstquarter of 2013. While Off-RoadVehicles (ORVs) and motorcycles facedchallenging 2012 comparisons, wewere again able to outpace theindustry and increase market share inboth product lines,” said Scott Wine,Polaris’ Chairman and CEO. “Two key tenets of Polaris’ long-

term strategy are growing globally andgrowing through adjacencies. Ouracquisition earlier this month of AixamMega S.A.S., a profitable European on-road quadricycle business, alignsperfectly with those two objectivesand furthers our penetration into the$4+ billion global small vehiclesmarket. Aixam Mega broadens ourproduct line portfolio, complementsour GEM and Goupil businesses, boosts our European distributionnetwork, and enhances ourcompetitive advantage in smallvehicles. Additionally, we finalized thelocation of our new Europeanmanufacturing facility, which will belocated in Opole, Poland. This facilitywill add much needed ORV capacityand serve our European markets withlocally designed and manufacturedproducts. We expect to break groundduring this year’s second quarter andthe facility should be operational by

the Fall of 2014.” Wine conc luded: “Not

unexpectedly, we saw a degree oftimidity in some customer segmentsthat corresponded with the payroll taxincreases that took effect at the startof the year. We remain cautious of theeconomic risks in both North Americaand Europe, but believe our strongteam and commercial plans, alongwith our near term product pipeline, headed by the new Indian motorcycle, will enhance growth in the second halfof 2013. With our solid start to theyear, we feel confident in raising our2013 full year sales and earningsguidance.”On-Road Vehicle sales, comprised

primarily of Victory motorcycles, butalso including Indian motorcycles andGEM and Goupil electric vehicles, decreased three percent from the firstquarter 2012 to $62.9 million. NorthAmerican industry heavyweight cruiserand touring motorcycle retail salesdecreased about ten percent duringthe first quarter 2013 when comparedto a strong mid-teens percent increasein the 2012 first quarter, which wasprimarily driven by the unseasonablywarm weather in 2012 and a late startto Spring in 2013.

O ver the same period, VictoryNorth American unit retail sales

decreased as well, albeit less than theoverall industry, resulting in continuedmarket share gains. This year marks the15th anniversary of Victorymotorcycles, and to commemorate theoccasion, Victory introduced a limitededition 15th anniversary CrossCountry Tour, inspired by the firstVictory motorcycle ever built.Additionally, as Polaris moves

towards the full re-launch of Indianmotorcycles later this year, theCompany unveiled the all newThunder Stroke 111 engine that will

power the new model year 2014Indian motorcycles. The enginefeatures 111ci displacement anddelivers the raw power and iconicstyling that have long been hallmarksof the legendary Indian Motorcyclebrand. The Company’s small vehiclebusiness grew sales double digitspercent during the 2013 first quarterthrough added distribution andimproved sales efforts for GEM andGoupil electric vehicles.

G ross profit was 29 percent ofsales for the first quarter of

2013, an increase of 10 basis pointsfrom the first quarter of 2012; whileover the same period, gross profitdollars increased eleven percent to$216.6 million. The first quarter2013 increase in gross profit dollarsand margin percentage was driven bylower commodity costs, higherselling prices and productionefficiencies, largely offset byunfavorable currency movementsand higher promotional activities.Operating expenses for first quarter

2013 grew 13 percent to $124.8million or 16.7 percent of sales, compared to $110.6 million or 16.4percent of sales for the first quarter of2012. Operating expenses in absolute

dollars and as a percent of sales for thefirst quarter of 2013 rose primarily dueto planned strategic investments, higher sales, marketing andadvertising expenses primarily relatedto Indian motorcycles, and increasedresearch and development activitiesrelated to new products underdevelopment.

N et cash provided by operatingactivities was $47.8 million for

the first quarter ended March 31, 2013compared to net cash used foroperating activities of $0.7 million forthe first quarter of 2012. The quarterover quarter change in net cash fromoperating activities is the result ofhigher net income for the quarter anddecreased work ing capi ta lrequirements during the 2013 firstquarter period primarily due toincreased accounts payable. Total debtat the end of the first quarter 2013 was$106.4 million. During the 2013 firstquarter, the Company increased itsquarterly dividend payment for the18th consecutive year by 14 percent to$0.42 per share and paid a total of$28.7 million in dividends toshareholders.

KEITH Wandell, who took on the roleof Harley-Davidson CEO in 2009, hasbeen named by Powersports Businessas its ‘Executive of the Year’ for 2013.

During his time in the position ofCEO, Wandell has overseen arestructuring of the manufacturingprocess and production across thebusiness and guided the companytowards targeting a non-traditionaldemographic. As a result of thechanges he has spearheaded theCompany’s increased income in eachof the past three years and grow retailsales and motorcycle revenues in 2011and 2012.

In October 2009, just five monthsafter Wandell took on the CEO role, theCompany discontinued the Buellmotorcycle line, laying off 80 hourlyand 100 salaried employees. At thesame time, the company also moved tosell MV Agusta, which had beenpurchased less than a year beforeWandell joined the business.

“The Harley-Davidson brand isabsolutely the most important thingthat we have in our company, andeverything that we do has to bedelivered in a way that’s true to thatbrand, that keeps the legacy living on,and the legacy is really all aboutpersonal freedom. It’s all about peoplehaving the ability to express their ownpersonal freedom through how theydress and how they customize theirbikes and how they get together at

these rallies and interact with oneanother,” said Wandell in an interviewwith Powersports Business.

Focusing on the core brand was notthe only significant change thatWandell brought about following hisappointment. When analyzing Harley’sformer year- long leve l - loadproduction, Wandell drew on hisprevious two decades of managerialexperience at Johnson Controls, aglobal manufacturer of automotive, power and building solutions.Explaining how he introduced arestructured seasonal demandmanufacturing process, Wandell said:“I felt that it was very, very importantthat we implement a more flexiblemanufacturing process, so that wecould manufacture bikes closer towhen the demand was going to bethere. In that way, we wouldn’t beloading our dealers up with inventoryduring slow periods of time and thenhaving shortages, if you will, duringbusy periods of time.”

“We’ve had to go through what wecall a major transformation in how wedesign and develop products and howwe manufacture, and it created a lot ofchange in people’s lives. It was difficultfor a lot of people, and you never liketo see that happen, but at the sametime, you know it has to happen. It’sthe right thing, so you just fightthrough it. But it’s certainly been verychallenging,” Wandell concluded.

F OR its latest survey ofHarley-Davidson dealertrends, Robert W. Baird &

Co. surveyed a total of 62dealerships, with the selectioncovering the US, Canada,Switzerland, Austria, UAE andCzech Republic. As part of its survey Baird looked at

the level of consumer recovery in themotorcycle market, and it did this bycomparing unemployment rates withconsumer confidence. Following arecord level of unemployment inJanuary 2010, when it reached 10percent, it has now fallen to eightpercent. These changes have beenreflected in the consumer confidenceindex that has risen from 60 points to70 points over the same period of time. The effect of these changes can be

seen in the percentage change ofannual on-highway industry retailunits growth. In 2009 the figurereached a record -40 percent, and thathas now changed to two percentgrowth in 2012. Baird’s survey results also show that

the Motor Company’s retail salesare improving bothdomest ica l ly andinternationally since a recordlow in 2010. It is not only the new Harley-

Davidson market that is showing signsof recovery, as used motorcycle values

are also showing continued increases. As of May 2013, the used value of thelatest three year models from Harley-Davidson was 97 percent of themanufacturer’s suggested retail price. However, despite the economic

improvements, many dealers havereported customer traffic number andnew bike retail sales as being belowexpectations and the issue being theunseasonal weather, with reports ofheavier than average rain fall andlower temperatures negativelyaffecting the beginning of the ridingseason.

As a direct result of the poorweather, US dealers who

completed the Baird survey reportednearly flat sales of new motorcycles atthe beginning of the second quarterand sales of used machines down ninepercent. Among international dealers who

completed the survey Canadian dealers

report a fall of three to five percent onyear-on-year sales figures for newmodels, with used being down almost15 percent. In other internationalmarkets new bikes sales were muchmore positive with sales up almost 10percent. However, used bike sales wereshort and were reported as being downover 10 percent. When asked for their thoughts on

the reasons behind the slow start to thesales season, dealer responsesincluded: “Cold weather has held backsales,” and “Traffic is down 2,700 doorswings. The weather has been cold andrainy.” However, other dealers whoresponded to the Baird survey had amore positive view of effects of theweather, saying: “Rainy weather, butnot slowing sales, selling 300 percentmore rain suits,” and “As soon as itstopped snowing in May, our traffic andour sales went through the roof.Business is booming and doesn’tappear to be slowing down. 2013 looksbright.”In the survey, the majority of

respondents (79 percent) said theinventory levels were about right (51percent) or too low (28 percent), whichis a reflection of the changes made atthe Motor Company to how itmanufactures new machines at itsYork facility with the introduction ofsurge production. The strategy isintended to use flexible capacity tosurge production ahead of peak retailseason to have the right bikes in theright place at the right time. Bairdsuggests that on average dealershipshad 56 bikes at the end of the firstquarter compared to 45 at the sametime last year.

Indeed in response to the productionand resulting inventory changesdealers’ comments included good andbad feedback, ranging from:“Inventory too high due to lack oftraffic,” and “The new inventoryallocation is getting better – more new[units] for customers to choose fromearly in the year.” The Baird survey concluded with

questioning dealers on how thefactory’s promotions have influencedshowroom traffic and sales. Theresponses were generally less thanpositive. “The Motor Company’s

promotions remainunfocussed anduncompetitive.” “Whatpromotions? The 110thAnniversary is in

Milwaukee and nothing is done tobuild traffic to dealers. The marketinggeniuses should be ashamed.”

AIRHAWK: Scott Parman, European Sales Manager: “I go along with allthose who are saying that while the overall number of show visitors was low,the quality was high and it has been a great start. I’ve had some greatmeetings and I’m very happy with the investment - for sure I want to exhibitagain next year.” www.airhawk.net

DNA SPECIALTY: Alex Marquez, International Sales Manager for theCalifornian wheel, front-end and chassis manufacturer said: “Having theshow in May is not a great month, it is too late in the European season -I’d suggest March or early April would be better. A huge marketingcampaign aimed at dealers is needed, as the show seemed to look moreof a bike competition rather than an actual trade event - the floor-planneeds to be re-arranged”; www.trydna.com

TECMATE INTERNATIONAL: Martin Human, Managing Director of themarket-leading battery charging, maintenance and diagnostics specialistsaid “arranging such a show is really hard work, so I applaud the team’sefforts in making it easy for exhibitors. The v-twin industry is a verypromising sector of the market for us as it is demanding in terms ofbattery requirements. We did meet some interesting people, but thosewho build one-off customs are not really our market. The customers whowere interested in our products were in fact more mainstream peoplewho were mostly invited to the show. Clearly work now needs to be doneon building that attendance in the future.”; www.tecmate-int.com

FEULING PARTS: Luke Leatherman and the Feuling Parts team havedone an extraordinary job in developing a broad-based performanceparts program since starting out with the late Jim Feuling’s legendary W3three-cylinder engine design derived oil pump design a decade ago. TheFeuling Parts program now also includes Beehive valve springs, Reaperbrand cams, 7075 heat-treated camplates, hydraulic roller lifter designs, complete camchest and oiling system kits, including coolers and offset oilfilter adapters; www.feulingparts.com

A MONG the dozens, indeed hundreds ofcomments and

reactions that we receivedduring the show in May, thesingle most common themewas that, in the Europeancontext especially, the eventwas very “different” toanything seen before. In that reaction alone, we hereat AMD see complete validationof the concept and delivery ofthe primary aims and objectivesof the project.

By way of a recap, those aimsand objectives were to create abusiness oriented ‘Pro-Grade’expo environment that focusedexclusively on the motorcycleparts, accessory, custom andperformance industry, and didso in such a way that thewonderful subject matter of ourmarket looked truly“inspirational, motivational andaspirational”.It sounds like such a simpleproposition, but incrediblethough it seems, there has

KLOCK WERKS, USA: Brian Klock, owner: “We were very excited toget involved in this first year, and I think that the concept is definitelyproven. There is a real need for an expo like this, and there is no questionthat Robin Bradley and AMD can and will deliver. We would very muchlike to be a part of it again next year and look forward to helping build itinto the major expo it is going to become.” www.kustomcycles.com

S&S CYCLE: Speaking for the famous Viola, Wisconsin basedmanufacturer, ahead of their 55th anniversary, Marketing Director PeteAmenda said: “I was very encouraged by what we experienced during thefirst ever Big Bike Europe event. The organizers created a venue whereS&S could meet directly with many of our European dealers anddistributors, share information about new products and services, and getfeedback on the market and opportunities for us to grow our business. The format will continue to evolve, and the value for the dealercommunity will continue to grow. I think this event has the potential tobecome the premier trade event in the region for the V-twin and custombike industry.” www.sscycle.com

never been an international expo in Europe with that focus andthose objectives.

W hilst there are important events in an already crowdedinternational expo calendar, most of which have quite

legitimately earned their place in the market cycle, they are eitherlargely regional or national in nature, or they are broad-based OEdominated trade association shows such as INTERMOT and EICMA.The regional and national custom shows are dominated by adealer/custom shop exhibitor community that is seeking to

engage with local consumers in a primarily retail environment. The broad-based OE dominated trade association owned showsalso have an altogether different and also perfectly legitimatefocus – one that seeks to develop participation in the PoweredTwo Wheeler (PTW) industry in general and do so primarily in thecontext of the business needs of the major motorcyclemanufacturers. However, with workshop and parts departmentrevenue firmly center stage as the primary >>>

TTS WHEELS, GERMANY: Torsten Kröner, Owner: “I am very happywith how the show turned out. We met good people, it was well organizedand the bikes were fantastic. We’ll be back!” www.wheelspoint.de

PAASCHBURG & WUNDERLICH: Dieter Klann, Sales and MarketingDirector: - “It was always going to be tough to start such an ambitiousnew project in the current market, and we are disappointed in theattendance. But it was a first year, and for me the overall concept remainsvalid. Provided there are clear strategies in place to grow the attendancefor next year, then for sure we will look at exhibiting again.”www.pwonline.de

JIMS USA: For the Californianengines, parts and tools specialist,Paul Platts said: “As an Americanmanufacturer, it’s difficult toexhibit overseas. Most shows areeither a retail environment orcustomer-specific. The idea of aprofessional trade show, similar tothe Cincinnati V-Twin Expo, in acentral European location is ideal.Big Bike Europe’s first attempt atthis was on target. Compoundedwith the Custom Bike BuildingChampionship ~ the potential forthis show is big. In a nutshell, theconcept and presentation wasgood, now we need the dealersand enthusiasts to attend andsupport it! I know for a fact thatwithout this, no show will survive.Robin & AMD have done a greatjob building the championshipover the past 10 years, I trust theywill do the same with Big BikeEurope.”; www.jimsusa.com

KIBBLEWHITE PRECISION MACHINING: The Californian valve trainmanufacturer’s Jacob Harrington said: “KPMI has a long and prolifichistory in the US, and we valued the opportunity that Big Bike Europegave us to continue to introduce European dealers and riders to theperformance, dependability and value that is built into every product wemake.”; www.kpmi.us

mechanisms by whichauthorized dealers andindependent shops are able tocontinue trading, an expo thatthrows the spotlight on thebusiness needs of thisimportant sector is now alsoperfectly legitimate, buttherefore dramatically“different”.Even though those who spottedthese “hallmarks of difference”may have initially struggled toarticulate those differences indetail, and it is perfectly clearfrom the word of mouth, onlineand social media feedback inthe weeks following Big BikeEurope that the message isbeing understood. Indeed, among those (dealers andconsumers) who are responsiblefor the majority of thoseworkshop and parts departmentrevenues, those at whom theshow is primarily aimed, themessage and its differences are

being welcomed. As we said last month, theprimary objective now is tobuild on the start point that theindustry has given itself byfurther developing expo contentand attendance. N OW in its 10th year, the WorldChampionship of Custom BikeBuilding has always had an

international flavor. That is one of the manyfactors that remained unchanged after thecompetition was staged in Europe for the firsttime when it was held in Essen, Germany, aspart of Big Bike Europe, with competitorsfrom 23 countries present. Among thosecompetitors was one young man makinghistory at the Championship. His name wasWinston Yeh, and he was the first Taiwanesecompetitor in the World Championship ofCustom Bike Building with his ModifiedHarley Sportster – Stealth Bullet.

Winston is the proprietor of Rough Crafts, a smallcustom shop in Taipei City, but he has a longbackground in the custom bike industry, and whenhe was first starting out seven years ago he spenttime working at Roland Sands Design as a graphicdesigner. So impressed was Roland Sands withWinston’s work that when he left to return to Taiwanhe gave him a set of RSD wheels as a thank you. Itwas this very same set of wheels that set in motionthe build of the bike Winston entered in the ModifiedHarley class at the 2013 World Championship, andthen ultimately took first place in the class, too.

Of course, Winston needed more than a set ofwheels to start the build, and as a donor bike hesourced a 2008 1200R Sportster. As soon as itwas in the Rough Crafts shop Winston beganthe strip down. The bike was completelydisassembled to allow for the first of the manysubtle but significant changes – converting itto run oil-in-frame. Winston’s reason for doingthis was to be able to rid the bike of its bulkyside panels, and as part of the work he placedthe oil lines along the top of the frame, so thatthey are then hidden by the gas tank.

The next step in visually slimming the bikewas to then relocate or modify the battery, andWinston took the former option. His solution togetting a battery to fit into the now limited space

The Taiwanese sharp shooterThe World Championship of Custom Bike Building moving from Sturgis to Germany was welcomed by many

European bike builders as it meant it would be easier for them to compete in the event. However, for one builderEurope was just as hard to get to as the US, the reason being that Winston Yeh, of Rough Crafts, is based in

Taiwan. However, distance was not going to put him off competing, nor for that matter taking a trophy home!

below the bike’s seat was to get a custom madeLithium lon battery made based on a collection ofA123 Nano cells.

W inston then moved on to mounting the RSDwheels to the bike, but obviously the stock

mounting points would have to go. At the rear acustom swingarm was machined from billetaluminum with an Exile Cycles sprocket brake calipermounted to the inside. The disc, which the caliperworks on, was sourced from the Performance

Machine catalog to match the RSD wheel.

M ore CNC work was undertaken at the front ofthe bike, with Winston being responsible for

the design and machining of the girder style fork. Inorder to reduce the weight of the fork as much aspossible the inner sides have been heavily machined, with the left leg having a further recess machinedinto it to carry the Performance Machine caliper. With the rolling chassis complete, Winston thenturned his attention to the bike’s drivetrain. Due tothe prohibitive cost of running a large bike in hishome country he has kept change to the enginesimply cosmetic. Much of the work that has beendone involves showcasing parts from the RoughCrafts product line or prototype parts. Amongthe production parts there are the billetaluminum velocity stack and rocker boxcovers. The cam cover is a prototypepiece, but Winston expects to be able

to put it into production. When it does go intoproduction it will be available for all ’04 onwardSportsters and will feature all the brass bushingpressed and re-bored to the proper dimension. Onthe opposing side of the engine Winston has usedan Evolution Industries’ open belt 2in primarydrive, which he has modified to suit the look ofthe Stealth Bullet.

Meanwhile back on the drive side the finaldrive has been converted from belt to chain.

The finishing touch on the engine is thecustom push rod collars. They were made fromsolid silver by 2 Abnormal Sides and designedto match the custom silver badge they alsomade for the bike’s head tube.

T he silver theme is carried through on the finishto the bodywork. After extensively modifying the

stock tank and building a custom seat/tail unit,Winston had the body work wrapped with carbonfibre sheet, which was then given a coat of clearlacquer before the detail lines, silver leaf logo, andshading were added. All of the wrapping and paintwork was handled by Air Runner Custom PaintStudio.

Finishing touches on Stealth Bullet are the ridercontact points, with both the bars mounted belowthe upper tree, and the rear sets being hand-madein the Rough Crafts shop.

Over the course of the World Championship therewas a constant stream of people stopping to take thetime to carefully look over Stealth Bullet, taking in allthe exceptional detail. It was the level of detail thatcaught the attention of Winston’s fellowcompetitors, who when it came to judging, placedStealth Bullet in first place in the Modified Harleyclass.

AFTER the atrocious weather of lastyear hit bike entry numbers andattendance, normal service wasresumed for the 39th annual CustomBike Show held in Norrtällje’sSocietetsparken, with 220 bikesentered in 7 classes and almost 8,000visitors from around Europe. This yearwas the ninth time that Custom BikeShow has been affiliated to the AMDWorld Championship.Three separate judging systems are

used to determine the winners, with ajury of industry professionals decidingon three World Championship affiliateprizes and Best in Show, with thecompetitors deciding the class prizes, and a Public Choice winner beingawarded a RevTech engine courtesy ofCustom Chrome Europe.Finland has traditionally provided a

large number of winnersover the years, and 2013was no exception as AlpoVaris of Aliens MC took theBest in Show prize and alsowon the Harley-DavidsonChopper class with his superbexample of Scandinavian chopperstyling. Another Finn, Anssi Kantonen, was runner-up with “Spirit ofDouglas”, a hand-crafted Old Schoolracer highlighted by his innovative useof a BMW Boxer engine. In third place, and fresh from his 13th place finish in

this year’s World Championship, wasCarlos Stenson’s steampunk-themed“Moonshine Trickster”, based around

a 1923 boat engine. Having driven 7hours overnight to compete after finallygetting the bike running, Carlos alsopicked up the Public Choice award andwas runner-up in the Custom class. All three winners gain automatic

entry to the World Championship ofCustom Bike Building in Essen,Germany, and a EURO 2,000 prize to beused against the expense of competing.

Our thanks, as always, to Twin ClubMC for their meticulous organization,Custom Chrome Europe, MotorcycleStorehouse and W&W Cycles for theirsupport of the event, and the City ofNorrtällje authorities for their biker-friendly attitude and use of the centralpark for the bike show.
