C ONDUCTED in October and November 2013, the latest AMD Robert W. Baird & Co Harley- Davidson Dealer Survey reported positive new bike retail trends (up by between 11 and 13 percent), but revealed that new bike sales are tracking down at between three and five percent with showroom traffic failing to meet dealer expectations. With the long-term headline unemployment rate in the United States continuing to improve, mirrored by a steady rise in the consumer confidence index, stock market prices and home prices, it would appear that annual on- highway retail motorcycle sales continue to lag behind macro economic improvements. Harley-Davidson retail sales (domestic and international) have continued to improve since they bottomed-out in 2010, performing ahead of total market sales, but the recovery in the value of pre-owned Harley-Davidson models may be suppressing sales. Dealers are reporting that their pre- owned inventory appears elevated ,while most reported that their new bike inventory levels were “too low” on average. The consensus view for 2014 appears to be an expectation that new unit sales will be up mid- to high-single-digits percent with 95 percent of those surveyed saying that credit has remained stable or eased recently, and some 70 percent of dealers viewing the new Street models as a positive addition to Harley’s line-up. Despite solid early final quarter growth, in falling short of dealers’ retail sales and traffic expectations, many indicated that while the new MY2014 bikes have continued to drive showroom footfall, their disappointment suggests that they had stronger expectations for trends in the seasonally slower fourth quarter. Some 49 percent of dealers surveyed said that new bike retail sales were worse than expected, with 56 percent saying that consumer traffic was worse than had been hoped for. However, Baird say that retail remains on track with their projections. Internationally those dealers who were surveyed (some 25 percent of the survey) reported seeing new bike retail growth, albeit at lower rates than reported in the United States, with Canadian dealers suggesting that new bike retail improved between six and seven percent, with dealers in other international markets reporting growth of between two and four percent. LAST month we reported that Easyrider Events were seeing advancedealer registrations for the upcoming V-Twin Expo in Cincinnatirunning ahead of recent years, on a week for week basis.

This comment piece is being written just after the new year and Show Director JimBetlach is reporting that the trend has continued in the course of the last five or sixweeks.

With most of the exhibiting and non-exhibiting vendors that we have been in contactwith so far this winter reporting that 2013 was a better year, and eyeing 2014 with alevel of optimism that hasn’t been seen for many years, itwould appear that the bottom of the U-curve that has beenproving to be frustratingly wide has finally beentransitioned.

That is a BS way of saying that while we may still beseveral years away from double digit annual parts andaccessory sales growth, we do now finally appear to belocked into sustainable low-to-mid single digit territory.

That is not to say that the future is guaranteed, nor thatthere aren’t potential issues ahead – it isn’t, and there are.

Despite Harley-Davidson’s best attempts to reach a younger audience, most recentlywith its new 500cc and 750cc Street models, the demographic time bomb that hadeverybody so exercised before the global economy fell off a cliff has not gone away.

It has merely morphed. It has changed its taste, color and smell but the lack of anexplosion is not the same as it being defused.

The last six years have seen massive changes in the nature of the motorcycle industryand many of those changes won’t become entirely apparent for several years yet.

Principal among them is the issue of a “lost generation” as millions of potentiallifelong riders have skipped the right of passage of their late teens and early twentiesthat would have seen them form the kind of initial bond with life on two wheels thatsimply cannot be replicated in later years.

Ironically, it may transpire that this problem proves to be less acute in the air-cooledcustom v-twin industry and in the United States than could be the case in the‘mainstream’ motorcycle market, and especially internationally.

Outside the United States a ‘perfect storm’ of regulatory, training, licensing andsafety issues were already choking off youth rider access before the downturn nailedthe coffin lid shut.

In Europe it is perfectly possible to anticipate that an entire generation has beenlost to the motorcycle lifestyle altogether – the middle aged requirements for economicurban mobility aside, it is ironic that the custom market may well prove to be the mostlikely to have resilience in terms of attracting non-riders later in their life cycles, in muchthe same way as has proven to be the case with the weekend warriors of the past 20years.

The findings of the most recent AMD/Baird quarterly Harley-Davidson dealer survey(October/November 2013 – as reported elsewhere in this edition of AMD Magazine)

points to initial reaction to Harley’s new Street models as being very positive amongstthe Company’s dealer network, though, for me, it remains to be seen whether or notthe ‘Bar-n-Shield’ showroom environment is the right place for this kind of outreach.

Either way, the way in which the Motor Company has refined its edge with afashionably dark lustre can only ever go so far in terms of feeding the market withlongevity.

In Europe, where the custom market has actually proven to be among the mostrobust of market sectors, the collapse in total motorcyclesales from nearly three million units a year as recently as2007/8 to a little north of one million units for the 2013calendar year, has got many people reaching for their exitstrategies or banking on chocolate-by-the-checkout!

The task facing the industry is as much about MRSP asit is about metal. Despite all the theoretically positiveeconomic indicators that appear to be emerging from everyorifice currently it is going to take more than a (not reallyall that) new platform for Harley to be able to sustain the

unquestionably excellent progress it has been making among young riders in recentyears and keep them hooked on the drug long enough for them to mature into ‘bagger-buyers’.

That they ever will is not only predicated on assumptions about the brand, assumptions about the metal, but critically, assumptions about social and lifestyleattitudes that may yet emerge as bum-biters that rain on our parade for many decadesinto the future.

In the short term, much will become apparent at Cincinnati on the second weekendof February this year. After the false dawns of 2009 an 2010, when it appeared thatthe parts and accessory industry may have been enduring nothing more than a blip inits fortunes, the industry needs to see undoubted ‘aisle-vibe’ optimism translate intosustained sales activity deeper into the summer months and second half of the yearthan has been the case for a long time.

If it does, then the reasons for optimism in our humble little backwater of themotorcycle industry will have proven to have been well-founded, but either way sparea thought for many in other sectors of the motorcycle industry and be aware that weneed to see more gravitas to any impending upturn than that offered by the limitedshelf life of the ‘bolt-on’ and service revenues that have sustained us so far.

S&S Cycle is now offering CNC portingon cylinder heads for XL models.

The CNC porting service beingoffered on ’04 –’14 Sportster modelsis described by the Wisconsin businessas being similar to the program itprovides for Big Twins. The customersends a set of heads to S&S, who thengive CNC ports to them for less thanthe price of a comparable set of newperformance heads. Once machined, the heads are assembled with newpremium valves, bronze guides, andhigh-lift valve springs.

Customers also have the option ofbuying a set of CNC ported 1200ccheads outright.

Due to the design of the XL motor,a set of CNC ported 883cc headscannot be used on a 883cc engine. Themotor must be upgraded to a 1,200ccor 1,250cc engine with highperformance pistons with larger valvereliefs. CNC ported 1,200cc heads arecompatible with stock 1,200ccpistons, but work on 1,250cc enginesas well. S&S recommends the use of acam with TDC lifts no greater than

.213in intake, and .215in exhaust toachieve .050in valve to valveclearance.

The S&S CNC porting service is notavailable for previously ported heads, heads that have been structurallydamaged, or heads that aredetermined to be unserviceable duringinitial inspection.

CNC porting is not currentlyavailable for Harley-Davidson CVOengines or Screamin’ Eagle cylinderheads.

new traffic and increased new unitsales,” said one of the dealers surveyed, while another said that there is “muchinterest in 2014 H-D's, especially theRushmore Project bikes”; “the newRushmore models are very popular,”reported another dealer, with onerespondent stating that “our sales areup 150% from last fourth quarter to

date! It is a great end to a year thatstarted with a cold, snowy and slowselling first quarter.”

Other dealer responses indicatedthat all their scheduled deliveriesthrough January were sold, that“demand is great on the water-cooledmodels,” that there are “lots ofupgrades to liquid cooled touring,” butthat while “new bikes are driving

interest and traffic, those are the onlybikes selling.”

The survey period ran from October1st to November 21st, and it wasnoticeable that survey results may havebeen “influenced by [declining]performance in the second half of theperiod”, according to Baird – “oursurvey results in the first and fourthquarters are particularly affected by

seasonality and weather,” Baird’s Headof Harley-Davidson dealer researchCraig Kennison said, but with the meterstill running on store overheads, reducedshowroom traffic towards the end of theyear in particular (as the Christmas giftmarket approached) will have beeneyed with concern by those dealers whosaw footfall diminish.

Kennison says that the strongconsumer response to the 2014 modelsmay have shifted demand away fromused inventory and his expectation isthat Harley-Davidson will keep thesupply of new bikes entering thechannel “lean”.

The majority of respondents (88percent) indicated that inventory was“about right” or “too low” for the timeof year, with over one third saying hatthey wanted more inventory comparedto just over 10 percent of dealers sayingthat theirs was “too high”.

Kennison went on to say that “basedon Harley data and our assumptions, theaverage US dealer had 61 bikes at theend of the third quarter – up from 51bikes last year.”

Some dealers indicated that they stillhad too many 2013 models in inventory, and that there was a shortage of thestronger selling 2014s such as theFLHTKs and the FLHX specials.

Dealers reported that pricingcondit ions remained largelyunchanged, with over half of thosesurveyed saying that they were sellingbikes “below MSRP” (53 percent),though some (14 percent) said that theywere selling above MSRP and that theprices they were getting had improvedslightly from the third quarter of 2013and compared to the fourth quarter of2012. Some 33 percent of dealersstated that they were achieving MSRP

in the final quarter of 2013.In connection with pricing versus

MSRP one dealer commented that“new bike sales at other dealers are

waiving freight/PDI/admin or throwingin 15%+ discounts on P&A and GM forbikes that aren't even built! New bikesales could increase if we get the rightbikes at the right time for our customers

and financing has not changed. As longas people get a 'discount' on new bikesfrom other stores, the rest of the dealerswill suffer. Discounting is a slippery slopeand devalues the brand and the'experience' that the One Visionphilosophy was trying to keepconsistent.”

In terms of financing trends, 70percent of dealers reported that theconsumer finance environment remainsstable with 26 percent reporting that itcontinues to improve. However, CraigKennison says that anecdotal dealerfeedback suggests that consumers areproving more reluctant to take on debt.

On average, dealers are reportingthat they expect “retail sales to improvemid- to high-single-digits percent in2014”, and Kennison says that Baird’sexpectation is that US retail will groweight percent in 2014 with internationalHarley-Davidson sales growing 6percent for the year.

The timing of the survey meant thatBaird were able to produce the firstformal feedback to the introduction tothe Street 500 and 750 models onNovember 4th (the first new Harley-Davidson bike platform since 2001).

Kennison says that while somedealers had concerns that theintroduction of a smaller bike platformhad the potential to isolate core riders, the arrival in showrooms of smallerdisplacement models pitched atpotential new consumer groups whopreviously had no bikes to draw them toshowrooms is a positive development.“The majority of dealers (70 percent)viewed the launch positively, with apositive-to-negative ratio of 10:1.”

One dealer responded that “we areembracing a new audience with adifferent demographic. It is the rightthing to do;” with another saying that“we have needed an entry level Harley-Davidson for a long time and anothermodel like the 750 for people to step upto that are in their price range.”

Other comments included one dealerwho said that “I think it is a plus in termsof pricing, low maintenance, performance, styling, for the youngergenerations to be a part of H-D culture. Most of them…don't want to be on theold man’s or old lady’s baggers yet;” andothers commenting with remarks suchas “Long overdue,” “Can't wait!” and“Exciting.”

Baird also managed to collect dealerfeedback on the spate of recent recallsthat Harley-Davidson had issues, with byfar the majority saying that the “recallswere handled well,” that they “wentvery smoothly” and that dealers wereglad that Harley “got in front of theissue.”

Robert W. Baird & Co. Inc. is anemployee owned wealth management, capital markets, asset management andprivate equity firm that was founded in1919 and is headquartered inMilwaukee, Wisconsin. The companysays that it currently has $105 billion inclient assets.

iN the motorcycle industry manypeople are literally born into thebusiness, riding bikes almostbefore they can walk. They then

go on to make the lifestyle a business. Then there are others, people who buy abike later in life and realize there isroom for improvement, whether that bethe bike’s looks or performance. BobWood of Wood Performance is definitelyin the latter camp, but with a lifetime’sexperience of high-performance enginetuning behind him, he has continually setnew benchmarks for Harley enginetuning. As a youngster Bob had no interest inmotorcycles, cars were what fascinated himand how to make them go as fast aspossible. It was on the drag strip that Bobstarted to really learn how to get the mostfrom an internal combustion engine. At just18 years old, driving a supercharged ’55Chevy Coupe, Bob set his first NHRA National

Record. Ten years later he repeated the featwith a second NHRA national elapsed timerecord in the NHRA Fuel Funny Car class.By the late ‘70s Bob had moved on fromFunny Car racing and had developed aninterest in aircraft, so much so that in 1978he opened a Cessna aircraft dealership, flighttraining school and FAA repair station inOpa-Locka, Florida. He also owned andoperated Wood Engineering, which wasinvolved in designing and producing uniqueproducts for the aircraft industry. For most people that level of commitmentwould be enough to keep them occupied, butnot Bob. It was at this point that motorcyclescame into Bob’s life in the shape of a brandnew 1990 FXR. Talking about that first bikeBob says: “I felt it never rode right, so Ideveloped the carburetion on it and thenlooked at the camshafts. I used theknowledge I had from automotive racing andsimply applied it to a four-stoke motorcycleengine.

“All my life I’ve wanted to go faster. Startingwith my first car, all I’ve ever wanted to do ismake things go faster and faster and faster. Ijust used all I’d learnt in the past, in theschool of hard knocks. When I started dragracing you used to throw some timing at it,some fuelling at it and then did you gofaster? Did you win the race? If not try again. That’s how I got started.”

W hen Bob got started in the motorcyclebusiness, the first part he brought to

market was reworked Keihin carburetors. Thework Bob did on the carbs included boringthem out to make them bigger, and changingthe calibration on the transfer ports. The aimwas to simply get more fuel into the engine, using, as Bob says, the same principles heused in his car racing days.“I used the same type of developmenttechniques as I had on cars, that wassomething Keihin never got. They didn’tdevelop carbs like we did in America. Keihinmade good carbs, but they just weren’tcalibrated for high performance camshafts. But that type of work just came naturally to me.”Today Wood Performance has a range ofcarbs available that includes the King CV.Designed for use on Evo and Twin Cammotors, the King is offered in sizes 40.5mmthrough to 43mm, making it suitable for

When it comes toperformancecamshafts, there is alot of choice. itseems that everymanufacturer claimsto offer the mostbenefits, but Woodperformance backsits claims up withcontinued success atdyno shoot-outevents. AmD talkedto company founderBob Wood todiscover just why hiscams are so good…

stock or modified heads. Features on theKing include boring and blue-printing, ‘timed’idle transfer slots, a modified ‘MV’ slide, andO-rings from James Gaskets. For riders looking for more power, the SuperKing 505 is based on a 55mm CV carb, whichis rebuilt with a high capacity float bowl kit, titanium fuel needle, .092 through .100inmain jets and a KF325 340cfm air filter.

T he KF325 air filter is the largestperformance filter offered by Wood

Performance, in a range that starts with theKF250, which flows 22cfm compared to astock Screamin’ Eagle filter’s 135cfm.In order to then get the maximum benefitfrom the increased fuelling offered by theKing carbs and high flow air filters, Bobrealized he would have to take a look at thestock Harley cams too. “I realized thecamshafts didn’t have the right timing,” saysBob. “They need to be different to a car’scamshaft, and so I developed my first bikecamshaft, the W6, and from there it just took off.“My thoughts on camshaft technology atthat time were not like everybody else’s. Istarted with short duration, very short, for

more torque, and combined that with highlift and very tight lobe separation. Thisshorted the duration, and the higher the liftthe more goes in to fill the cylinder. Mostpeople use wide, long duration camshafts, but with my way, I give the engine the fuelwhen it needs it without taking away thebottom end.”

The way in which Bob set about developingthe timing on his camshafts owes a lot to

his drag racing days and the way car enginesof the time worked.“In the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, there was avalve on the engine called an EGR – exhaustgas. What does it do? Well, to my mind itlowered the combustion temperature so youwouldn’t have any valve lapping,” says Bob,talking about how he designed the profile ofhis cams. “With a Harley, after the frontcylinder fires, the rear doesn’t fire 360degrees later, it fires 315 degrees later. Thenthe front has to wait 405 degrees before itfires again. At that point I realized that hasthe effect on the engine as an EGR valve. So Ideveloped all my cams like that, so theylower the combustion temp and make more power.

“Most guys run a .112in intake and a .114into .116in exhaust, which is a reducedoverlap, but that loses horsepower. I run asmuch overlap as I can and that producesoxide and nitrogen that lowers thetemperature of the combustion chamber, andtherefore increases power.” Bob concludedby saying: “There’s nothing new under thesun when it comes to tuning an internalcombustion engine. I’ve been doing this for57 years, it’s all I know.”That knowledge is now incorporated into theKnight Prowler and Knight Prowler Designerscams. Proof of how effective the design ofthe cams is can be found in the results of theannual Daytona Brute Horsepower Shootout,as for the past nine years bikes runningWood Performance cams have won theirrespective classes.

Even though Bob established his businessby reworking Keihin carbs, he sees fuel

injection as being the way forward for

Four years agoTieme wasapproached by hiscousin, who wasoverhauling Harleyabout going intobusiness together,as he was so frus-trated by waitingon machine shopsto do engine workfor him. The resultwas Technomotion;part motorcyclerepair shop andpart precisionmachine shop.Success came quick-ly, andTechnomotion nowhas a staff of sevenand is producingcustom billet alu-minum Harleyengine parts such anose cones, rockerboxes, and bottomend parts. It was building cus-tom engines thatled Tieme to con-tact Bob at WoodPerformance.Tieme was lookingfor high-performance camshaft sup-plies on the internet when he sawthat the Knight Prowler cams byWood Performance had the kind ofprofile he was looking for. Tiemesays of the discovery: “The timingand duration Bob makes, and thatnobody else does, was the sort ofthing we were looking for.”After an initial order was placed, the two companies got into a dis-cussion about European sales, andTieme says: “It just clicked fromthere, and now we help each otherout. Bob makes really good stuff. Weare now discussing making parts forhim, and expanding our businesstogether.”As part of this discussion to workmore closely together, Technomotionwas sharing booth space at Big BikeEurope last year and displaying itsbillet aluminum parts alongsideWood’s carbs and cams.

serious engine tuners looking for serioushorsepower improvements. He says: “The risein fuel injection has been a blessing indisguise. When I was growing up, we didn’thave the choice. We had to figure out what amotor liked. In certain areas we couldn’ttune it because with certain exhausts there isno back pressure,na and it affects thebottom end and fuel curves always followthe dip. With fuel injection you can take thatout. You can have any manifold fuel pressureat any rpm simply by giving the injector theinformation it needs to open or close. Soactually, fuel injection is the best thing thatever happened.” However, he is also awareof a potential downside to the technology.“Now it is so complex that 90-95 percent ofthe shops can’t work on it. The biggestproblem we have in the industry right now isfinding shops that have dynamometers andare capable of tuning fuel injection systems.“Carbs are good, but they are very time-consuming to tune properly. I’m glad fuelinjection is here, because I want to get awayfrom tuning carbs. With our cams it doesn’tmatter if the engine has a carb or fuelinjection. Cams don’t know they are just adumb piece of metal.”

In order to make it easier for customersbuying Knight Prowler cams to get their

engines tuned to make the most of thechanges, Bob has developed his own dealerlocator software to run on the WoodPerformance website. It lists regular dealersand also platinum dealers. The latter arefamiliar with the high performance productsmade by Wood Performance and who have

Dynojet tuning centres to ensure fuelinjection systems are properly set up.The dealer locator software is not simplyrestricted to the domestic US market, it alsocovers Canada, Australia and Europeancountries that have Wood Performancedealers. Indeed Europe is a significant marketfor Bob:“I know there’s over a million Harleys inEurope; it’s an extremely important market. We use now Technomotion as our distributorbecause we wanted to protect our dealers’pricing structure.” However, this does notmean that domestic sales are suffering.Indeed, Bob explains the situation is theexact opposite: “Our domestic sales for thepast 18 years have continued to rise. Therecession hasn’t touched our business. A guythat rides a Harley doesn’t want to get hisass kicked by anybody. He’ll skip childsupport, alimony, house payment etc., just sohe can go ride, and he’ll put a cam in thatbike, an exhaust, and an air filter, and thengo and ride.”It is that attitude of the company’s customers, along with a consistent record of producingdyno competition-proven parts, that iskeeping Wood Performance at the forefrontof Harley engine performance tuning.

TWO years on from the launch ofwhat was to become the Viola V-Twin (VVT) service parts concept,S&S Cycle continues to invest inthe long term development of the

program – the latest step being theappointment of Kevin Boarts as the newbrand manager and product line analyst atthe company’s legendary Viola, Wisconsinheadquarters.

Speaking following his appointment, Kevin said“my personal experience and background combinesdealership time with working on the customerservices and tech line desks here at S&S, and as suchyou could say that ‘I get it’ when it comes to the aimsand ambitions of VVT and the valuable role it playsfor workshop and parts department personnel.”

This year will see an expanded catalog unveiled

with extensions to both the breadth and the depth ofthe VVT offer. The program is intended to “fill a gap”for dealers by providing one-stop-shop access to thekind of service parts and items that are needed mostfrequently, but for which availability is eitherscattered across a number of vendors and resources, and is simply scarce.

“VVT is not a custom parts program, and neitheris it a performance line,” explained Kevin. “Themission is simple. To bring together top qualitybranded service products that we here at S&S arecomfortable associating our own brand andheritage with.

“One of the most important factors in being ableto make profit from workshop activity is timemanagement. I know from my own experience justhow frustrating it can be when a customer’s workhas to be left incomplete for days while a specificpart or an unforeseen requirement is sourced.

“That is frustrating for the dealer, but of course itis also frustrating for the rider, and despite ours beinga mature industry characterized by a wide range ofvendor sourcing options, sometimes the simplest ofworkshop requirements prove to be the toughest.

“The Viola V-Twin program takes the complexityout of sourcing service parts. Our experience here atS&S is unmatched in the industry both in terms ofunderstanding what works and what is needed.

“What we are now doing is turning thatexperience into a sourcing handbook and one-callopportunity to keep the workshop moving along.”

The Viola V-Twin program is aimed at work onstock or near-stock engines - all air'cooled American v-twins and that is absolutely what theprogram is designed to cater to.

“The remanufacturing and reconditioning workthat we do here at S&S has taught us more thananyone else where the product supply issues are tobe found, and what are the kinds of product thatbusy workshops need.

“In the course of the coming weeks and monthswe will be announcing further additions to the VVTprogram, all based on customer feedback and ourown combined experience. After the hugely positivereaction to the debut of the program in the past 24to 36 months it is clear that there is a need for theVVT program’s philosophy and we are excited aboutthe prospects for seeing it develop into the ‘go-to’workshop sourcing resource in the years ahead.”

Mac Motorcycles displays prototype

MAC Motorcycles, the British company set up to build small production runmotorcycles based around Buell Blast engines, exhibited a prototype ‘Spud’model at the ‘Autosport International’ show at the NEC, Birmingham, UK, inearly January. Speaking about the concept behind the bike, company founder, Ellis Pitt, said:“We wanted to take something from the simplicity and non-conformity thatunites the chopper builders with the philosophy of the Italian singlesmanufacturers from the 1950s and 1960s and the spirit of competitionspecials… that of taking something standard and improving it. Uniting all thisin a belief that the riding experience and the stories that go with motorcyclejourneys seem to have been sanitized by technology and plastic. Wire Plus retrofit kit forBig Dog ownersWIRE Plus has introduced its new Big DogMotorcycle retrofit kit program as a solution to theproblem of Big Dog motorcycles having a failing EHC.

The company states that rather than taking 8-12hours to modify an existing Big Dog wiring harnessto complete a retrofit kit install, it can now be donein 1-2 hours. The reduction is time is the result ofremoving the stock Big Dog wiring harness andsending it to Wire Plus for them to do the work.

Once Wire Plus receives the loom, it will visuallyinspect each individual wire, eliminate the printerstyle connectors that are exclusive to Big Dog, put on

new waterproof Deutsch connectors to make theharness ‘plug and play’ ready for the Wire Plus EHCRetrofit Kit modules, and then bench-test it beforereturning it.

The harness is then re-installed and connected toan EHC retrofit kit module.

W&W expands product rangeW&W Cycles is now stocking ‘Cannonball MAG-12’ wheels, which are reproductions of the castmagnesium wheels that gained popularity in dragracing circles in the ‘60s. The cast is using the latesttechnology and state-of-the-art aluminum alloys, toguarantee long-term trouble-free service, and the

new wheels feature a changed hub design too. Thehub now accepts special adapters which allow forthe installation of common H-D drum and disc brakesystems. Certified to take loads of 350kg per wheel, the MAG-12s are certified by TÜV and JWL (JASO)approved and available in sizes 3 x 16in and 2.5 x19in and a choice of cast finish/machined finish orbarrel polished/machined finish.

W&W Cycles sources parts internationally and itnow has Baja Sportster skid plates fromSweden’s LeBeef Kustom Metal Works. The skidplates are laser cut from steel, then shaped inhydraulic presses. Available to fit 2004 onward

Sportsters, the skid plates can be ordered in a choiceof galvanized silver or black powder coat/wrinklefinish.

Continuing the international theme, Japan’s E/Jsupplies W&W with its Tokyo Step riser kits formid-controls. Designed for use on Evo engined

Providing a choice of handlebar options, W&W isstocking two designs from Pangea Speed; the Zephyrand Streamliner. The Zephyr handlebars featureflared ends that bolt directly to the triple trees, andhave 3.5in bolt spacing. The 1in diameter bars arenot dimpled, making them suitable for use withcontrols from bikes built before ’81.

Like the Zephyr, the Streamliner bars boltdirectly to the triple trees. The 54cm wide bars are23cm high and have a 23cm pull-back.

An extensive range of performance shockabsorbers are now available from W&W as thecompany is stocking the Bitubo range for H-Dapplications. The Bitubo WME Series of shocksfeature a nitrogen pressurized mono-chamber witha floating oil/gas separating piston. This internalhydraulic system is said to improve riding comfortand vehicle control.

The adjustable shocks have a body made from

high-resistance steel alloy and its heads are CNC-machined from billet aluminum.

The shocks are available to fit 1979 on Sportsters,’80-’05 Touring models, FXR applications, ’91onward Dyna, and XR 1200 Sportsters from ’08.

A second Bitubo shock option for ’79 onSportsters, FXR, XR 1200, and ’80-’05 Touringmodels is a version with a separate compensationtank, filled with pressurized nitrogen gas. This featureis claimed to improve vehicle control at all levels ofriding. The body is made from high-resistance steelalloy and its heads are cast aluminum (upper) orCNC-machined from billet aluminum (lower).Adjustment on the shocks includes spring preload, rebound and compression.

Responding to the trend for creating café racersfrom Sportsters, W&W has a range of tail sections to

make the conversions easier. The range begins withthe Bull Original Boattail for ’04 on Sportsters. The design is based upon the one-year only offeringfrom the Factory in 1971 that combined elements ofSuper Glides and Sportster seats and fenders. Thefiberglass Bull Original seat and fender fits withoutany modification needed to the bike, is ready to paintand is supplied complete with a checkered pleat seatpad.

The Burly Café Racer tail section is for ‘86-‘03Sportsters. Once again this one is fiberglass, and is

finished in black. The supplied seat pad has a gelinsert for comfort. Installation of this tail sectionrequires removal of fender, supporting struts andrelocation of the taillight and signals.

Higher airflowMikuni kitsMIKUNI, which already has a HSR42 carbkit for Sportsters, Buells and stock BigTwins, has now created additional kitsusing HSR45 and HSR48mm smoothborecarburetor for use on tuned engines. Bikes with mildly modified Big Twinengines with aftermarket cams and bigbore kits are suitable candidates for thebenefit of extra induction flow providedby the large bore Mikuni HSR45carburetor kit.For use on race style engines the HSR48kit features a 48mm smoothbore carb, which is said to offer the highest air flowpossible. Like the HSR42, the HSR45and HSR48both offer high levels of airflow, whileproviding highly accurate fuel metering,

more power, and precision throttleresponse. The carburetors are designedwith an eight-roller bearing flat throttleslide assembly that allows anunobstructed venturi at full throttle toflow more air, while it mixes moreprecisely at all throttle settings. Anadditional benefit of the roller bearingthrottle slide is smoother throttle controland the use of a lighter throttle returnspring for reduced throttle effort. Mikuni’s adjustable accelerator pumpprovides instant throttle response, while ahigh capacity float bowl prevents fuelstarvation even under full throttleapplications.

W ILDSTYLE, a custom shop based inPrachatice in the Czech Republic, was double winner in the

Freestyle class at the 2013 WorldChampionship of Custom Bike Building. Notonly did one half of the shop team, RomanBus, make the top ten, but so did his partnerin the business, Zbynek Turecek, who placedsixth with his bike Zt.

The starting point for the build of Zt was theacquisition of 126ci Ultima motor and matching six-speed transmission. The motor has been left basically

stock with the exception of the custom inlet manifoldto move the Mikuni carb to the left side of the bike, and a quick shift kit has been added to thetransmission.

With the drivetrain package in the jig Zbynek wasable to start planning the frame. The single downtubedesign has been constructed so that all the tubesused in it have a slight radius to them. Towards the

Czech café culture

Café Racer inspired bikes are an increasingly common sight on the international showcircuit today. However, some builders, such as Zbynek Turecek, are simply taking

elements of café styling and creating bikes that defy categorisation. His 2013 WorldChampionship entry definitely had a Café Racer feel, but was not strictly a Café Racer,

which didn’t stop it from placing sixth in the Freestyle class

rear of the frame the seat hump also incorporates thebike’s oil tank. Below the seat hump, a pair of Softailshocks have been mounted that provide thesuspension at the rear where they mount directly tothe custom swingarm. The swingarm serves double

duty as it also carries the bike’s battery. The frame of Zt was also designed so that the

point where the engine rails meet the seat rails notonly mounts the pivots for the swingarm, but alsoprovides the mounting point for the angle adjustablefootpegs.

At the front of the bike, the entire front end froman MV Agusta F4 has been pressed into service. TheUSD forks, triple trees, and six-piston Nissin brakecalipers and 320mm disc are all used. The Agustaalso contributed its projector style headlamp to theproject with it being housed in a custom bikinifairing. At the top of the forks a steering damper ismounted along with custom clip-on handlebars. Thebars are carrying GMA lever and custom switch gearthat was made in-house at Wildstyle.

To get the bike rolling, Zbynek has made use of apair of spoked wheels, the rims of which have beenpainted to match the rest of the bike. The frontmeasures 3.5 x 18in and carries a 120/80 x 18 tire, while the rear 7 x 18in rim is wrapped in a 210/40 x18 tire.

T he build was completed with a one-off customgas tank that features a stainless steel gas cap,

with the design being continued along the lengthof the tank and through to the seat hump. Thesatin blue paint used throughout the bike was alldone by Zbynek along with all the polishing on thebike.

Despite not being easily categorized, Zbynek’sbuild caught the attention of his fellow builders in aChampionship where the café racer theme was verypopular, and they rewarded his efforts to break awayfrom traditionally defined styles with sixth place inthe Freestyle class.
