MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD

Dear Members and Friends of the AMEDD Museum, Welcome to the Spring 2016 edition of your Monitor. Now that the dust has settled a bit, we are able to put out the word - the Foundation offices have relocated! We are now at the front of your Museum, easily accessible to the public and convenient for the Foundation staff who interface with the Museum's daily operations. Please stop by and pay us a visit!

The AMEDD Museum Foundation continues to seek ways to encourage and support education about all things AMEDD. In October, the Foundation hosted a reception to salute our combat medics as part of the the 2015 CSM Jack L. Clark, Jr. Best Medic competition. The 150 attendees included 80 competitors, their families, command teams, Foundation Board Members, Ft Sam Houston representatives and about 30 Command Sergeants Major and SGMs from locations throughout the U.S. Army Medical Command, to include MEDCOM CSM Gerald Ecker. At the award ceremony the competition winners, in addition to their other awards, were each presented with a replica Hospital Steward knife from the Foundation Gift Shop.

On 10 December, the Foundation sponsored a presentation by COL (Ret) James Van Straten introducing his recently published book, A Different Face of War: Memoirs of a Medical Service Corps Officer in Vietnam. There were more than 70 attendees present for this educational evening, conducted in the Museum auditorium. Copies of COL Van Straten's book are now available for $34.95 in the Museum Gift Shop.

In January we announced the winner of this year's MG Spurgeon Neel Award, Gwyneth R. Milbrath, for her article “Grace under Fire: The Army Nurses of Pearl Harbor, 1941”. During our Board of Directors meeting Mrs. Alice Neel presented the award medallion and a check for $500 to Ms. Milbrath. Additionally, her paper will be published in the AMEDD Journal.

The runner-up was Justin Barr who wrote “Military Medicine of the Russo-Japanese War and its Influence on the Modernization of the U.S. Army Medical Department.” His paper will also be submitted to the AMEDD Journal for publication. In all, there were five manuscripts submitted in competition for the Award. Congratulations to Ms. Milbrath and Dr. Barr and thanks to each of the authors who submitted manuscripts for consideration.

Progress on our Facility Master Plan to expand and improve the museum facility continues apace. In coming months we will be focusing the Capital Campaign Fund Drive on this vital project. MG (Ret) Pat Sculley has agreed to lead the drive and is busily assembling an All Star team to make the campaign a resounding success. You will be hearing more from him in the future.

We are saddened to announce the loss of three of our staunchest supporters and friends in the past few months. We note the passing of COL (Ret) Barbara Bruno, CSM (Ret) Howard Harrell, and COL (Ret) Byron Howlett. We send condolences to their families with deep appreciation for their efforts on behalf of the AMEDD and the Museum. They will be missed. To all our volunteers, and to our donors, thank you for being a part of the AMEDD family and for your continuing support of our Foundation and Museum. Our success would not be possible without your dedication and support.

Speaking of volunteers, the Foundation continues to strengthen our Museum Docent Program. Our Saturday museum tours for Army Medics have been expanded, and now feature tours for our Basic Officer Leadership Classes, ensuring that the story of the AMEDD is passed on to every new member of the AMEDD family. We need volunteers willing to learn and participate in this essential mission. Dave Windsor, the Museum staff, and our committee members are continuously editing and improving the first edition of our Docent Manual and Program of Instruction. On almost any Saturday, you can join a museum tour to learn from the best and share a little of yourself to inspire future Medics. They need you.

Whether you are traveling from a distance or living nearby, please stop by the Museum and take a moment to reflect on your life in the AMEDD and your place in the long maroon and white line. We need to hear your story. BG (Ret) Daniel F. Perugini Chairman of the Board
