size is used to distort perspective.
Normally, objects further away are smaller than those closer by, in this
picture the perspective has been reversed; closer parts are smaller while
more distant parts are larger.
As an extended answer: In order to maintain this illusion, the pictures appear to
turn as you walk past them.
