Funeral services lor Pat Barton were held Wednesday, May 3, in First Baplist Church with Dr. Gene Meacham, pastor, officiating.

Funeral arrangements were directed by Freeman/Abell Funeral Home.

Mrs. Barton, 63, died Sunday, April 30 ,2000, in University Medical Center in lubbock.

She was born July 14, 1936, in Wapanuka, Okla. She moved to Hale Center in 1974 Irom Oklahoma City and was owner and operator 01 the Fashion-Mart in Hale Cenler lor several years and was a hairdresser lor 21 years.

On July 12, 1969, she married Dan Barton in Oklahoma City.

Survivors include her husband; one son, Steve Washington 01 Hale Cenler; two daughters, Billie Uplergrove 01 Hale Center and Bobbie Armijo 01 Austin; a sister, Willeene Teague 01 Kemp; and lour grandchildren

Students Compete In UIL Events Fifty-two local students recently

participated In the elementary UIL Literary Event, The district event was hosted by Hale Center's Akin Elementary, The elementary level Includes students currently enrolled In the 2nd - 5th grade.

Students devote many hours to practice forthe competition. They are to be commended lor their hard work. The UIL oilers the following contests for elementary and junior high students: calculator, creative writing,

Impromptu speaking, listening, mathematics, modern oratory, ITlJSic memory rumbersense, oral reading, ready writing, spelling, storytelling and art.

E8"ch contest Is Intended to teach the thinking skills students will need later in liIe. Students will leam to solve problems, speak effectively and write clearly. Each contest Is designed to help students reach these goals.

Students receiving "Blue

Ribbon Honors" include Travis Bryan, Tiera Gomez, Andrew Galloway, Jeanette Mendoza, Fontaine Melendrez, Alexandria Espinosa and Rachel Linton.

Additional winners are Analhi Rey, Danielle Lopez, Michelle ' Newton, Cherise Mendoza, Kerry Mixon, Chris Cherry, Nicholas Flores and Meagan Puente.

Fifth grade students Include Lindsee Ellis, Angle Sims, Nancy Swanson and Ashley Swoap.
