AAO Faculty Liaison Update

Dear Colleagues,

Academy 2017 in Chicago was another successful meeting for our students, residents, faculty and alumni. We were represented well at the meeting through numerous poster, paper and lecture presentations as well as volunteer and committee work. Their work is again highlighted in this year’s Academy update.

As always, we want to recognize our new fellows of the Academy. This is a significant accomplishment and evidence to their commitment to the profession. If you happen to work alongside or know any of our new fellows, please be sure to congratulate them on their achievement.

This meeting was particularly special as our late colleague and friend, Dr. Harue Marsden was honored by the Academy with the Eminent Service Award. Her sister, Yuki Marsden, was there to accept on her behalf. Also honored at the meeting were many of our current and former residents through several travel fellowships and awards that are highlighted in this update.

Also, the Academy meeting represented the first opportunity of our new dean, Dr. Mark Bullimore, to interact with faculty, residents, students, and alumni. Here are a few thoughts from him:

The Academy meeting was a great experience and I was proud of the work presented by SCCO. The college was well represented in all aspects of the program from awards to posters to lectures and workshops. I attended the alumni reception and met the past and present of the college. I flew to Colorado full of pride and excitement, jumped in my car and drove west, energized by our collective future.

I hope you enjoy this year’s edition of the Academy update. A special thanks to the MBKU Library and Marketing & Communications Departments in helping create this year’s edition. Mark your calendars for next year’s meeting in San Antonio from November 7-10!

Residents Update

Dear Colleagues,

Chi Town is not a bad place to attend one’s first Academy meeting. There are so many attractions to visit such as the Bean, Willis Tower - Skydeck (aka Sears Tower) and the Architectural River Tour. In addition, there was Hamilton the musical and Giordano’s famous Chicago deep-dish pizza! However, none of these distracted our Residents from engaging themselves with all that the Academy meeting had to offer. Our residents were fully immersed in attending lectures, presenting their papers and posters and participating in networking activities.

Our Residents were quite busy at the Academy and it is amazing that they found time to do anything else. Forty-nine residents attended the meeting, many being first timers. Nineteen proudly presented posters at the Residents Day and three presented their papers as if they were seasoned lecturers. Congratulations on a job well done and in representing MBKU on the academic front!

We should expect nothing less from this group of Residents at future Academy meetings. We look forward to their contributions to the scientific world and anticipate welcoming them as fellows.
